  • After purchasing the HEP (head end power) equipped F40PH-2s between 1986 & 1989, VIA planned to convert many of its coaches from steam heating to electric heating and scrap the rest. The last steam heated passenger train from Halifax left on 23 January 1993. Over the previous 18 months more of the steel (ex CN) blue and yellow coaches were in use while the ex CP Stainless Steel coaches were refurbished and converted to electric heat. At this time the Ocean ran three days per week as did the Atlantic (on different days). The consists alternated between the two trains and much of the equipment was maintained at the Halifax Maintenance Centre adjacent to the station. This video shows some of these changes.

Took a trip as a kid with my mom in 1991 (RIP mom!❤) we went from Edmonton to Winnipeg, left from the downtown station, going there we had upper , lower berths and coming back we had those staggered roomette rooms, the ones that encroach on one another, Via rail then was good, food excellent and train staff, friendly and courteous 😎

of the several spotlightings of Canada featured in GB kids' TV programming, Halifax had been the lone highlight throughout all those years

Love this archival footage. The last mainline steam heated train vanishing into the fog is really fitting. Hard to believe its 25 years ago already!

Excellent views of a time that seemed to vanish overnight. I started shooting vids of VIA, CN and CP in '93, and when I watch those scenes now I'm amazed at how quickly it all changed. This was the last era of so much that I thought would be around forever, but would in fact be gone in just a few years hence. Thanks so much for sharing these moments.

It makes me so sad knowing that the amount of trains in eastern Canada has vastly decreased since this videos filming. Look at how amazing Moncton station looked! The second platform is completely deteriorated now.

Useful for model railroaders to show what the last days of steam on VIA Rail Canada Ltd. were like.

It is difficult to recreate the effects of steam on a model railroad - smel, sound and sight!

Wow- thank you for posting this neat look at the past. I love the F40ph units! I have held an interest in Canadian railroads since I was a kid- after seeing a TV documentary called 'Last Train Across Canada' -which would have been filmed around the time of your videos here.

Locomotive Mike Always interesting to reminisce! Steam heated trains were much less efficient than electric heated. They were either too hot or too cold! Glad you enjoyed the video.

Thanks for posting this. So nice to see the blue/gold-striped livery. I was hoping VIA would go whole hog with those colours but never did, to my knowledge. Trains were always a hodge-podge of equipment. Nice to see an "almost" full train in the colours.

Woul anyone happen to know what the numbers of the last 2 steam heat cars were? I'm currently one of the caretakers for 15462
