- This is it. The 1970 24 minute film on the CN/UA Turbotrain. It is in 3 parts and it is taken from a digital master. The Turbo was Canada's first and only high speed train and this film is fantastic. Enjoy watching this great piece of Canadian passenger rail history. For more information go to: highspeedrail.ca
Like the Avro Arrow, the Turbo Train was truely a great Canadian invention that was years ahead of it's time.
Rode the turbo train in Amtrak colors from New York to Boston. Loved this train and ran on timetable of 130 MPH after leaving New York. This was in 1974 and I was stationed in New London
I travelled aboard the inaugural Turbo train from Toronto to Montreal and return. I was booked in first-class and enjoyed the view from the front car.
I was a kid during this time period and remember seeing photos of the CN turbo train. My mom surprised me and bought me a metal school lunch box that had a CN Turbo Train on one side and a CP freight train on the other. Now it's a collector's item, but what did I know then.
I'm sure we hear famous Canadian studio musicians like Moe Koffman, Rudy Toth and more of that gang executing the tunes and arrangements so well! I believe they came up with the "rock" trip at the end of Part 3. What a trip!
What a beautiful train. Thanks for sharing.
Got to ride this train before they were retired by VIA Rail. Was an excellent trip from Montreal to Toronto. Funny how the shared bogie idea is used on high speed trains now like the TGV.
Was weird that in Montreal station u stepped down into the car, and in Toronto u stepped down onto the platform. There was a two way step gizmo that allowed that.
I love how the lead car looks like someone stuck a B52 or Boeing 747 fuselage on rails and stripped off the wings.
I remember my dad taking me and my older brother to see it go by at som crossing. I only saw it actually run once.
Talgo carried on with this platform and now has 186 - 205 mph Talgo 350s running for over thirteen years now.
Tech 83 Studio they can run up to 220 mp/h now. So even faster...
THAT’S COOL! I sure hope we get these soon.
VIA Rail’s current trains usually reach greater than 90 MPH, although they may occasionally reach 110 MPH (top speed for the GE P42DC). This reached a maximum of 120 MPH.
Medium Approach Medium Productions the cn/via turbotrain set the north american train speed record of 140 mph and that held up until the amtrak acela beat that in the 2000s.. via rails trains now are limited to 95 mph maximum .
Actually, the United Aircraft Turboliner, a shorter version but same design, ran Boston-New York a couple of times a day at the same time this train was running, in fact earlier if I remember, much like the Acela.
If there a space between the train and the airplane, it's where we can find the Turbotrain !
I have never seen the UA turbos. But I did Rhor turbos on Amtrak going from Detroit to Chicago. On the Grand Truck Western, they were called the "Flying Beer Can" by train crews. The turbos were extremely fuel thirsty and that along with other factors lead to their demise.
The units in operation on the NEC (Bos-NYC) were in revenue service. This would have been in the early to mid-60s. There were two consists running 2 runs each per day. It was the same design but a shorter consist as the Canadian version. I used to time the passage in order to watch it go by my back fence. Then one day they had some kind of error and had to roll to a stop behind my home, and had to do a cold restart. Now, hearing that jet turbine wind up to speed was impressive.
I think you meant to say "early to mid 70's". Although the US DOT contract was made with the New Haven Railroad, by the time the trains were delivered, the New Haven had been absorbed into Penn Central. By the time the testing was completed, Penn Central's intercity passenger trains had been taken over by Amtrak.
Funny I have that lunch box that "ACLtony" mentions. I got it at an auction last year and think it's about the coolest lunch box I have ever seen.
Saw one at a vinrtage store. 600 bucks!
Well I hope nobody got suckered into paying that much since it can be found on ebay for 30.
hahaha
@sideslide23 I remember sitting behind the engineer and the speedometer was at 130mph? pretty sure it could go faster? Same control arm for throttle as the Subway cars in Toronto! Bombardier makes High Speed Trains in Europe no reason other than poor tracks that it can not work here!
It could have been great if they had tested in Canadian winter conditions and had better quality track.
THANKS FOR SHARING THIS! NEAT!
Fucking awesome. I want one.
wow i actually worked on these trains and I know the guy serving in this Video
luvmusic592 sure
@@heyjay25 Woah hey, you don't know for sure.
@@coplini yes?
@@robertgray7010 I have a love /hate thing with the turbo (leaning toward love?) What did you do on the train? What was its route?
@@coplini i use to be a steward on this train in the first class car the route was between Montreal and Toronto
4:25 - The station is definitely familiar. It's Montreal's Central Station.
So there is nothing groundbreaking about the Acela? The turbo train did it all 30+ years earlier just using turbine engines instead of electric engines.
It is interesting that the Acela is almost an electric power version of this train, it even has a similar suspension system! And (Biting Yankee nails) it was built by a Candaian based company!!!
Actually the Acela is an evolution of the LRC trainset built in the '80s by the same company, not the Turbo. The LRC and Acela use an active tilt system (electrically controlled), whereas the Turbo uses a passive tilt system (powered entirely by G - forces). Similarly, you'll notice that the LRC and Acela have distinct cars, whereas the Turbo is articulated.
6:47 ... That Boigie design is used in all the main high speed trains today ... Like the TGV ... I love all those documentarys from the past
VIARailFan6448 showed you about tilt controls in engines of via - united aircraft turbotrain
Does anyone remember that on its inaugural run it hit a truck at Kingston.
I remember seeing that mentioned in a vintage issue of Trains magazine from the time. The big fibreglass clamshell doors on the front had to be replaced.
Well they didnt say anything about how the pendular system was based on Talgo's designs.
Close, Actually.... Designers borrowed the ex-New Haven Pullman-Standard Train X set from Pickens Tours, where it and the New York Central's Xplorer set ended up, for some high-speed testing. The results were incorporated into the new turbo train design.
this is in the 70s?? wow
#BringBackTheTurboTrains
Ha cool train. Fairly high end stuff back in those days. Tickets must've cost a pretty penny
I lived in Montreal from 1970 to 73 and then Toronto until 1974. Never took this train. What an idiot! Oh, well, I missed the Concorde as well. Soon I'll have one running on my layout, thanks to MTH.
Even though these trains failed, the design looks cool...
@Lord, any reason why they failed?
4F Productions the amtrak turbo trains failed because of poor maintenance . cn/ via turbo trains ended up being one of their most reliable consists once they worked the bugs out of them .
Still is. The Acela has been unable to exceed 170mph. However, to be really nerdy, only an American UAC turbotrain achieved the 170mph record speed - the Canadian record is only about 140mph.
us canadiana will have them running on the moon 2042
I hope so
But built by Convicts under work release
Where did you get this info?
This is the voice of Dave Devall
Scot harper Ill be damned...I knew that voice was familiar.
What happened to the Turbotrains? Cut up for scrap?
Yes too bad it is the only way I like to travel and they caught fire , it was a good way to travel .
Well, the Brady Bunch was a popular show at this time period and the clothes, hair styles etc were pretty much the norm.
@sideslide23 but not in Europe - already in the `50s the French where testing the speeds of about 300km/h
(186mph)
reminds me of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer :) or, the er-200 (Soviet Train)
It’s designed for people. Not for some kind of nonsense...
Interesting how turbine rail power was rather quickly revealed to be less efficient and more maintenance intensive than either electricity or today's current state of the art diesels. And too, there's the track condition issues to consider.....so much rail traffic is entirely compatible with today's railroad's physical condition. Perhaps "mag-lev" will be the next big thing for viable, profitable rail service. (hint: the price of gasoline is still ridiculously low)
there is gonna be 8 turbotrains built with new speed limits
se aparese el trein ns koploper
so why was this idea scraped?
Was not able to run in the winter season...always broke down
cause snow on tracks?
Scot harper they could have convert this train set into electric powered like they did with the French old tgv
randomrazr No cause cold weather
Scot harper wouldnt work in winter?
y do u think it was replaced?
Are there any surviving Turbo Trains?
360Nomad I’m not sure 🤔
360Nomad all the turbo trains were cut up and scrapped . not a single one is in existance anymore .
@sideslide23 they have electromagnetic trains that exceed 200mph...
Soon there is gonna be 10 turbotrains built with new top speed and they will be doing tilting and mechanical issue
0:22 is them installing the nuclear reactor
Don't forget to smoke,,, lol
Thunderbirds are go >>
train cn canada
@sideslide23 No, sorry, it could not "serve the future". In 70's the French dropped this design after Arabs took revenge on Israel (and all of us), and increased the price of old fivefold. Since then this design is obsolete due to costs. Jet engine is light, but not that efficient.
The only test they didn't run that doomed the whole project... was having big grease covered CN maintenance workers hitting the parts with hammers to simulate daily railroad yard use:)
I think one of the reasons for the Turbo's failure was its appearance. It looks ugly.
Jack Choules what looks nice to you? Just curious...
Rex Remedy beauty is in the eye of the beholder thankfully.
That is one f-cking ugly train...whew!!!
