I swear around 1998 I watched like a 3 hour long arctic expedition with trucks like these on discovery or PBS but I have never found it to watch it again.
It's obvious in that dangerous harsh region it's better to convert the pickup to a 4 track vehicle, it will help to increase weight distribution over a larger area, instead of using cold, hard , slick rubber tires.
rikki campos They use tires over tracks because they trek thousands of miles on these expeditions, and tires are faster and incredibly more full efficient while still providing excellent floatation and traction at lower pressures.
@@haukurthorsmarason5267 this video is retarded. just buy the proper truck instead of mess around with a perfectly good one that's suited for other environments. they should just buy a Unimog.

With over 20 years experience as a body man and painter I would be concerned about the quality and long term durability of some of these modifications.
You'd be amazed at the strength of a properly engineered object made of several weaker individual pieces can do. Plus you want some flex as being extremely rigid in those temps would likely lead to more failures. Plus if everything was built of 1/4" steel, the vehicle would weigh twice as much, which would work against the whole idea of floatation which keeps the trucks on top. Hence the extremely wide tires.
Where do you get those tires from? I thought they stop manufacturing them n what gears are yall running to turn those huge meats with that tiny, but efficient, diesel engines?
My god man, AIR DOWN THOSE TIRES, 4-5 PSI and you ll drive along without problem. YES even without beadlocks, those tires and rims will be fine. What the worst that can happen, its easy to blow the tire back on the rim, 10 min and your on your way again. Well i finally see some wrinkle in the sidewalls at 20 min onward, that improvement is HUGE ISNT IT!
I understand you can't use the studded tires right now but then why don't you use tire chains or any of the other type of ice traction methods besides carrying hundreds of pounds of gravel around with you?
this video and this garage is just full of retarded. just buy a fucking unimog and be done with it. stripping this and rebuilding it is just extremely stupid.
Yes it was a mistake not to carry chains or ice screws which we sometimes use for such conditions but we only learned about this ice conditions on the glacier edge on our way and had to improvise, got some buckets from a framer and used gravel. The trip was also to train a few guys that came to Iceland and you can say this added to the learning:)
Love the LEGO!.. that's how european folks see the challenge.. with a TOYota.. and bigger tires. In my neck of the woods, this is not a real "challenge", it's getting home!

Why us it illegal to have studded tires when on the glacier? I understand they said it was because of the season but you would think that it wouldn't matter so much when on a glacier.
studs are forbidden on our roads during a certain season… spring til autumn. Since those trucks are road legal, they´re not allowed to use studded tires during this time.
7mt7 Still don't make much sense why they can't use the studs, I'd it because it may do some kind of damage to the ice? (That would be understandable!)
You guys do excellent work fast clean also I was wondering what kind of silicone do you use for the wheel wells when you put the big ones back on thanks
Studs are disallowed on public roads during certain time of year, so they probably want to keep the vehicle road legal so they can drive it near the glacier by road . . .

@@QBIX23 It is filmed with telelens which makes it look more dangerous as it is and the truck would not be much faster as the slow cable. More thinking about it: the cineast may be could have been injured too in case of a broken cable ...

Nothing explains wheeling and operating your gear choices like a good LEGO set !! Love these trucks!
You guys are super amazing. Your expertise and professionalism blew me away. More power to you!!!

Pretty cool that they use lego to make demonstration models for training.
It's obvious in that dangerous harsh region it's better to convert the pickup to a 4 track vehicle, it will help to increase weight distribution over a larger area, instead of using cold, hard , slick rubber tires.
If that were better then people would not be spending a lot of money on having AT built these things and shipping them to Antarctica.

Loved that top gear episode, where they used these same cars to get to the north pole. I think it was S10e10

Lower air pressure on tires would've helped on ice like that
Two recommendations: 1 Tony gets a hearing aid. 2. Tires get studs.
