Maybe many people don't know "city pop" is not only a music genre...it was the portrayal of an era through music. It represented the Japan of the 80s, the Japan that gracefully rode the wave of prosperity, a perfect breeding ground not only for thinking about the future...but even not needing to for because its present was already perfect. The Japan where young office workers had exorbitant salaries and young couples were able to buy big houses, a cosmopolitan bubble-life where young salarymen and male and female students had a bright future, where everyone wanted to live. "City pop" talked about the joy of life and nightlife, love, happiness, an endless paradise that had to be enjoyed very fast and very lively, before the decade finishes and 90s come...
+Sleuth Entertainment I never heard Tokyo in any of these songs, what about California or New Yok City they dreamed to live too like Junko Ohashi had New York City or twin towers image on her CD album picture?
+@Tommy Taffy What was so far away? I think Japanese love New York and California to move there so most of us a lot will have several Japanese friends even in Toronto right? I assume Canada host the second largest Japanese population while your country USA host the first very largest Japanese population in the world outside Japan itself.
so much great music from Japan between those years. Just starting to hear the city pop tunes but I am also a big fan of the 90's and early 2000's Visual Kei bands and at that time to me Japan seemed like the coolest place in the whole world
was watching Akira recently and saw this frame in there for a split second before realizing where i'd seen it before! it wasn't an important plot moment or anything like that, disappeared as quickly as it came, but i love that an innocuous little gif in a 1988 cyberpunk flick made someone go "oh yeah. this'll be a banger city pop background"
@@bxwy4914 so true. though I believe it's an automatic process. something made by a bot. like when a bot watches a video, it sees if the audio fits with songs in the database. Currently listening to this while doing my laundry in a laundromat. I've been through a lot of pain in the last few months. Life is hard but it's moments like this that make me remember to appreciate the little things. God bless you all.
I discovered Plastic Love because my girlfriend (now fiancee, she's japanese) asked me if I knew it when started to play in a karaoke, where we went two years ago, in Shinjuku. She sang it quite well although her voice is lower... I must thank her for taught me this classic, 'cause within a few months I was already immersed in the city pop (and my style has always been heavy metal...). But it's so addictive, exciting, melancholic and warm at the same time, purely from the 80s, a type of music that instantly grabs you.
Why did i discover this playlist just now? What have i been doing all my life. This set transports me to a time i have never been to but somehow it feels nostalgic and happy. It's like a trance you cannot escape from.
I've never been to Japan, but I plan on living there for a few years when possible. I can just imagine driving at night with this playing, maybe a friend in the car. Down the roads of Japan just taking in the atmosphere and nature of the country. What a dream.
I believe you all can make it happen, I grew up dreaming of living in Japan and I just moved here in April. Living here is a bit different than visiting, but it's pretty nice.
I met a guy on discord who helped me with my calculus homework. He liked the song at 11:37. He found out that year that he had cancer in his brainstem, and he died before him or I graduated. I had a page in my notebook where at the beginning of the year I drew a leaf for every chapter of homework I had to do and coloured it in when I finished it. I wish I could've sent him a picture of it all coloured in the end I wish he was still alive. That song really hits different now
i used to listen to this playlist nonstop in summer 2019 and that summer had unexpected very dear memories, i wish people who had just discovered this playlist somehow feel the way i do about it for i don't want these memories to envoke feelings of mourning for the past. "don't be sad that it's over, but be glad that it happend."
Thank you so much for reuploading this mix, my friend. I used to listen to the original every Friday night as I made dinner and it was my introduction to city pop. So I was pretty sad when it disappeared. The visual has completely changed the way I look at laundromats! There are many here in Seoul and every time I walk past one, I think of this mix.
When i worked from home, waiting between calls. This really carried my sanity. For my lunch break id watch an episode GTO and it just all fit together so nicely. Sometimes it was like i went out in this plesent world just talking a mental walk when i was working, then when i got off the clock i got home. The feeling is so beautiful.
