This monitor was lent to me for review. I been using it for a few weeks but it’s now been returned. This review is completely independent and any opinions expressed are my own. There has been no payment for the content by outside persons or manufactures. As usual, I always reserve the right to say whatever I genuinely think about any product featured on extrashot.
Thank you for watching my video. You make these videos happen from your support, so please like, share and subscribe if you already haven't.
Sometimes I get the feeling the nearest anyone from Atomos as been to a film set is watching the BTS on a DVD
😂
Another great video. Just for interest, I looked at the range, and the 24” Neon appears “better value” with true 10bit panel, 4K resolution, and all the other good features of the 17”
Good point... the 10bit 4K would be noticeable... but then it's even more out of my range!
Thank you for this review. It would be amazing if you could compare it to the vision 17 from small hd :)
A great review of something I will never need. Do I want one? Or course I do!
Same!
I wonder if the Sumo19 is the better tool for smaller scale productions who'd like a larger on-set monitor. What you loose in image quality, you gain back in the touch screen, V-Mount battery support, a range of onboard inputs and outputs and cost. We bought one 3 years ago and mainly use it with a Shogun Inferno for automatic backup recordings and client monitoring.
I think you may be right... more in my market certainly. How's the fan noise on the Sumo?
It's ok. 95% of the time it's used indoors and imo it's not too bad in the context of Atomos devices. It's a bright display - 1200 nits - and running it at 50% brightness helps keep the fan noise down. I would say the character of the noise is more Shogun Inferno, than Ninja V, which I prefer as I find the higher pitch fan noise on the Ninja a bit more of a nuisance. In practical terms I'd say an on camera Shogun Inferno or Ninja V is more of an issue than the Sumo, as for us it's normally further away from the mics anyway. Unrelated to noise, but one thing I love with our FX9 is it will trigger recording on the Shogun Inferno, which in turn triggers the Sumo providing a no hassle 2nd backup. If it were damaged or stolen, I'd replace it without hesitation.
It's absolutely confusing what Atomos is thinking with the Neon product. Reviewers have all said this monitor is for production, not really suited for a grading suite unless it's calibrated. Well, I've attempted to calibrate my Neon 24 with LightIlusion's Colorspace. After first calibrating with Atomos' own calibrator, then I ran Colorspace thru Davinci Resolve to try to calibrate my Neon for both SDR and HDR. With the Neon set to SDR, it was obvious the default brightness is way too high, measuring about 600 nits instead of the 100 nit SDR standard. WTF? Reducing the backlight control will not reduce brightness enough. I had to also reduce the Lift control to get to 100 nits. At these settings, the Neon falls short of the Rec709 color primaries. Another WTF? Moving on to the HDR mode, the Neon applies the St2084/PQ EOTF. Again, the brightness takes priority over display contrast, making the display somewhat misleading to use in the edit suite. The NEON will not accept LUTs in the HDR mode, meaning one must have a LUT box. For some unknown reason, any attempt to reduce brightness to industry standards seems to keep the NEON from being able to achieve the P3-D65 primaries. This thing seems more like a toy than a serious monitor. ATOMOS customer support is responsive until I started asking technical questions, at which point, they stopped answering my emails. Just not good!
That's odd... I've talked to others who seem happy calibrating the Neon with the i1 Display colorimeter with the Atomos calibrator 2 App. It sounds like there's something wrong with yours... have Atomos looked at it?
Really good questions about the fans. I absolutely hate the fan in the Ninja V.
I hate them too... good news is making the video gave me a chance to talk to Atomos people about the fans... we can only hope!
Thanks for the video. I’m curious when you place the new iPad Pro 12.9 next to it.
For colour accuracy? Interesting... 🤔
Nice video! Thanks for always creating excellent content.
Do you have any guidance for finding a super bright monitor without all the bells and whistles? I only need brightnesses (anything from 17-21" --ideally 17")? I cant find anything to fit the bill outside of this one and the Osee (which is way overkill).
OSEE LCM215
I was wondering what that was from an earlier video... "In the world of color accurate reference monitors it's actually not bad value..." Maybe. Probably. Almost certainly... but... until it's clear how to calibrate it and check/maintain calibration, then it isn't really a reference or mastering monitor. (When you set up a camera that you know well on your balcony, look at the scene, walk inside and say "That looks really good!" realistically, that's almost 100% confirmation for me that the colors are great and accurate.) Personally, I want/need something larger on my desk in a light-controlled space to judge grading, and something smaller/lighter when out shooting, so this falls into a hole between those two needs but with a high price because it does stuff like 4k recording of SDI inputs that I also don't personally need. But I'm sure it will be fantastically useful for some folks.
Good points... I'm now wondering if the 24" Neon is a better bet as a reference monitor in a dark edit suite. True 10bit and 4K screen will definitely make a difference... but then that moves it even further out of my market (and pocket!).
Moooore modularityyy 😏😏😏😏
Good review
Fans, fans fans.......the worst thing about gear production these days. In terms of the price i do wonder if it's to do with 'economies of scale' in production. The reason 75 inch 4K HDR OLED panels are cheaper than this 17" monitor is that it production is made to cut a certain number of glass panels from one piece. This however needs a different production process that has a small scale of selling in comparison. That's why Flanders reference monitors are so expensive. I'll stick to my Ninja V handheld monitor and my Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q for now. Thanks for the review btw!!
Cheers Chris... and you're right, it's always economies of scale when we look at broadcast spec professional gear... the market is so small. I might also go with a Ninja shortly.
Can't help thinking that there won't be too many people being able to crowd around a 17 in monitor no matter how brilliant it is.....
True... but I'm thinking there'll be a few on most sets!
The thing is four grand and you have to control it with an app? No thanks.
How much would a simple remote cost?
Be interesting to see how many people ignore the “DO NOT TOUCH SCREEN” stickers you’d have to put on it, given the total lack of buttons.
🙏🏾
Cheers Eugene!
1080 🤦♂️
Yep, you'll need to go to 24" for more!
@@extrashot 4k is better for professional youtuber like you
Bough from BhPhoto for $999 - fully shit - returned back ... Osee monitors much much better
17" HDR monitor and recording capacity, i think its a steal for $999, i only don't like that you have no physical button or touch screen,
I'm wondering if I should keep mine or return it. Nothing comparable in the $999 price range.
@@rfilmprod9629 please keep it, don't listen to all those bad reviews, no monitor come close to what you get, even the record capability what 1k$, yes I was not happy that no touch screen or button but with the app you are ok. Osee monitor is not even close to this monitor and compare to 12” small HD that cost $2k I will say this monitor for $999 is a good deal
I loved your comment and how you sad it at 0:16. I felt you pain!!!!! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
True!
How come the clouds are moving fast but the weaves are very normal at the end?
Surely that’s on you, Almighty?
😂
Thank you so much :)
Great overview Paul as always! Kriss
I think the fans are there because of Dolby Vision. The brightness required to achieve the full Dolby Vision spec in terms of brightness would damage conventional displays. I think there are also Sony and Panasonic displays for professional use which also have fans inside them.
Maybe the option to turn Dolby off might be useful in a studio then?
@@extrashot I would agree turning it off would be an option, but I think they included it as a selling point so that content creators can view their creation in the Dolby Vision format. By the way I would like to thank you for a lovely channel, your unbiased views and information about how youtube works was very informative. Thank you.
My 7" Ninja Inferno has crazy loud fans too... its unusable in my studio. Seams to be an Atomos thing.
Great as always :). Cheers!
I keep saying it.... big fans moving slowly is the answer... same amount of air - just quieter! 😂
do you think it is worth the 999usd price tag they are asking for it today?
Deal from B and H right?
@@themomentstudio7178 yup!
yes, it worth it.
Hey Paul with the price as of today would you reconsider this monitor?
Has it dropped recently? It was way too expensive when I tested it.
Hey! I'm first!
Congratulations!
