@@twohats8462 my take on it is this, the video sucks you in because you want to see what's being made, but then you realize it's a whole bunch of effort just to make a vise, yes it's well made for what it is but the amount of effort to get there doesn't seem worth it to me I do alot of fabricating and making of custom tools as needed , but not anything that's already been developed and is easily available

Think some viewers are missing a very important point here. It goes about the creativity and fun of making a useful tool out of old parts. Yes, one can buy a vice for x amount of dollars, but this goes about craftsmanship and possibly learning a new skill. Great video !
my concern is why the hell there is not LVL wood available in thickness like 1+ inches? each of this kind starts from the point of glueing two boards to one thick.... this is realky crap!
There is something special about creating something with your own hands.
I'm not a woodworker or a maker of any kind but I love these type of videos because they give me ideas for how i might make things for my hobby of photography. As I see it their are 3 reasons to make something yourself 1 to save money 2 to customize it to your needs and 3 So you can say "I made that" and that's when a simple thing like a vice becomes art.
So many genius ideas here on RUclips that most people wouldn't even think about, and this is no exception. Well done and thanks for sharing your ideas and skills. 👍
Excellent use of what I really considered scrap.
Oh wow, I was just about to go to a wreckers and get two struts, pick up a sheet of 3/4” plywood, some threaded rod, bolts, washers, plumbing pipe connector, 5 minute epoxy, get the grinder out, the drill press ready, the router, some wrenches and get started on this cool add on, and then I saw a big old vice at a garage sale for $10, changed the metal grips to wood and I was done! Lol Don’t let almost/sort-of perfection get in the way of good enough! 👍🤪
My personal lifelong mantra is: Good enough, satisfactory, sufficient, acceptable, suitable, reasonable, agreeable, adequate, usable, all right; these words do not necessarily mean compromise in any endeavor, just a point at which nothing further of substance will be gained by additional effort. Don't let perfection be the enemy of good enough. ☺
That last line is pure gold. It took me a VERY long time to figure that out. I've polished more turds than I can remember, and can't recall the shine of a single one...

LOL!!! I was already thinking that is a SHITLOAD of work for a simple Vice! Even if I paid full price for a new one, I would be saving money over time.
It's a special purpose woodworking vise, not a $10 piece of crap. It's similar Rockler vise is over $250.
This is the way to make videos. Being able to hear only the sound of the work helps you stay more focus on what is being done in the work shop.

I never thought about using the shock absorber mechanism as simply the guides for something. I like it!
It would be self opening too.
@@MuskratOutdoors There is no tension in a shock absorber. It has neutral pressure. You might be thinking of gas filled struts.

@@joewoodchuck3824 a strut is technically a type of shock absorber. It has the same component as a regular shock absorber but it has a spring seat built-in and it's meant to house a spring. But they are the same exact thing for the point he was trying to make. A shock absolutely is filled with gas or air and it bounces back just like a strut when you depress it. And this might blow your mind but he used a pair of struts in this video. They were not shock absorbers in the standard sense. They were shock absorbers in the sense that a strut is a shock absorber.

Great job, well done. Brings back good memories. Built myself a vise using car shock absorbers over 20 years ago, worked very well for many years. Finally retired it in favour of a quick release vise. 🇦🇺
Loads of comments saying why didn't you buy one for $30 etc... but I appreciate that you are using highly engineered car parts to make a better vice. Changes I would make? 1. (as someone else mentioned ) put the screw below the strut rods (google carpenter's vice for image). This will allow you work to rest without tilting. 2. make your lock nuts on the strut rods flush. You will do serious damage to the back of your hand if the vice releases suddenly. 3. Use a piece of pipe rather than a broomstick as a handle. You can easily snap that handle if you put your weight (~100 ft-lbs of torque) to tighten the vice and failure will come very suddenly with sharp pieces of wood.
Damn- I had to go back and watch it all again! Love the imagination here as much as the execution. Lots of ideas to steal here too.
This is absolutely the best DYI video I have ever seen. I love the final result and learned at least 3 new tricks along the way!

@@TheLukio Those sandblast units are cheap to buy, definitely an item anyone with even a small workshop can afford.
Captain Velveeta Well you don’t need to sandblast it, it’s nice if you can, it would work the same. The little drill press is very inexpensive as it’s not a real drill press but a real drill press is not that expensive anyway. The welding on the other hand if you have tools why not use them? But you could certainly get somebody to weld the nuts to the washers for you.
He’s has a handful of “tools of convenience”, but nothing expensive was required to make this vice. No grinder? Use a hack saw. No blast cabinet? Use a steel brush. No welder? Use JB Weld.

I not only learned something but also thoroughly enjoyed the video! I especially liked the "automatic" sandblasting cabinet (gotta' get me one of those) and the "silent" circular saw and router!! (LOL) GREAT video!!!

Cuts everything freehand
Measures everything with calipers.
Measuring in base 10 is easier than fractions. Cannot say I don't do it too. Also the sharp points of the calipers scribe lines quickly.

@@luemn7691 PardOnE MOi. I woulda just welded the whole thing with that handy welder, but Im sheet metal rich and wood poor. I do wish I did this with the last set I took off. I thought it was going to be a long wood clamp for laminating boards or something, but then it got stuck to a table; which made more sense.

Just found your channel real cool talk about not wasting wood, I worked at Lowe's in lumber for 8 years if a customer had some wood cut if there pieces they didn't want I took it home if not it was throwed away. Those counter tops when come in they have some on the bottom the counter top with air staples ran thru them. I used the bottom ones make great work bench tops. One year they did a remodel talk about getting stuff new screws, bolts exc. from it. Nuts and bolts from the guy that assembled like grills and many other items every year get a nice box full of those. The year of the remodel I stayed after work took apart several 4 ft. florescent lights they had the cord on them just plug them in all kinds of bulbs, I love to tinker don't have all the nice tools you have. Like the saying goes One Mans Junk Is another Mans Treasure!!

The thread on threaded bar will not last 2 minutes being used on a vice. Nor will the 4 x 4mm screws holding it to the bench..
A little anti seize will help but you probably need higher grade hardware.
The screw looked like it was too high should be a little below the guide bars to give maximum vise jaw depth
Yeah but it's wood so any lower and strength would've been compromised.
It's not a bench vice. I would agree if you were holding an engine block but you're only using these to steady things for sanding and other minor work. You're not going to jackhammer anything using these.

Neat idea, but I can't imagine that being able to hold very tight. The wood will split with the grain pretty easily when tightened down.
1/2" steel plates would be much stronger.
Wood vice clamps are better for wood workers as metal will marr the project wood.
This is plywood. It won't split.
How about using both!? As in.. Steel plates then have removable wood to cover them when you need a softer touch?👍🏻
This is cabinet grade plywood. Super duper strong.
That is why it is made of plywood however I can’t imagine this being very useful.

Cristi, I agree. Sometimes, however, applying no rules while acting out ends in incarceration in the county lockup for the weekend. Thankfully, making your own bench vise rarely heads that direction -- except the way I do it, of course. Can't wait to show that video, as soon as the district attorney returns my property, that is. 😳
Great idea for when you want to clamp woodwork without leaving marks you get from a steel clamp.
I gotta say excellent concept and idea, as a heavy diesel tech and an independent set of eyes I have identified several construction changes I would implement myself but really awesome use of a set of car shocks. Bravo🙏

That's a great idea for a wood vise. I was kinda hoping this video would give me some ideas for projects I can use my powerarc welder for but this was definitely worth it anyway.
That’s great! So the used shocks don’t really do anything!
They're used as smoothe and sturdy guides.
They also help the vice to open more easily.

I live in a throw away society born of being in a country with wealth relative to much of the world.
We see things such as these as junk, not for what they can be. A couple of hundred years ago people in my county had to build most things themselves. This self reliance has been lost.
I had a cheap Timex sports watch for at least 10 years. While visiting my brother five years ago I replaced the battery and strap. His wife commented that I was wasting time, buy a new one. I told my brother to watch out, he was old and she may replace him with a new one.
Two days ago the watch finally wore out and cannot be coaxed back to life. I will buy another of that model and it will probably outlive me.

My father-in-law from the Czech Republic has had his Czech made watch for 45 years. He was just visiting and told me this. The thing survived the Communists.

So you're literally just using the old shocks as linier guides. Okay, I'm sure it will function as expected for quite some time.
DISCLAIMER: Alot of shocks are gas filled. Take precautions cutting and/or welding them! You could have a bad day.
Came here for this ... there is a reason alot of shock absorbers have warning labels on them. Be careful people. The video should have had a warning in it to start with.

Check 4 tin labels / Manufacturers Name Plates - those should be enough for a quick Internet Check. Do it On-site before taking home.
& Does Anyone knows whether the Gas Shocks are Filled with an Inert Gas ? One would think so, for Accident Safety - but I watched twice and 2nd time round noticed he primed ? Painted ? Them, and put them in an Oven ?? Damn It ! - now I've confused meself !!
Kieran Benn nitrogen gas usually. As for an oven that was a media blasting cabinet aka sand blast to remove paint.
Nitrogen isn't flammable or does not explode. What are you even talking about?

And how long before those worn out struts start leaking all over your floor? I bought something similar off Craigslist for 30 bucks it called a vise.

I restore historic buildings and have a greater appreciation for good craftsmanship than most people.
