    Doom 64 had one of the best stories of any Doom game, and the music and graphics are key there. Here's why.
    In the beginning of the game, we can see that Doomguy is suffering from PTSD and having nightmares about the demons. And for good reason, too. Remember, in Doom 1 and 2, the invasion comes out of nowhere, and the mentality of Doomguy is entirely fight or flight. His back is against a wall, and the only way left is forward and through. He's also motivated by the blinding rage of losing Daisy. It's not about personal choice. He did what he did because there was no other option. These events leave him scarred. Most of humanity is dead. His pet is dead. His religious beliefs are in question (he's Catholic). At this point, he has a lot to meditate on and process, mentally.
    Deliberately or not, I think the music reflects this new attitude. He isn't fighting out of sheer necessity anymore. This is a preemptive strike. And being the only person who won't die in the process, he has to do it. Despite his mental state. As the game goes on, Doomguy is reliving his nightmares. His slower movement, the way he reloads his guns with less cartoonish enthusiasm, the downright terrifying music, and the gothic appearance of Hell serves perhaps to show us his new mindset. One more driven by dread and loathing then by adrenaline fueled rage and hatred. This is Refusal of the Call.
    However, notable development takes place when you reach the Hell gate. Doomguy cackles and goes through by himself. He now understands that he has no choice, and accepts The Call to Adventure. He has reached The Crossing of the First Threshold.
    As the game progresses, Doomguy develops further, as you can tell from the tone of the interludes that you read when you find secret levels. Silently, Doomguy progresses through the rest of The Hero's Journey. Not taking place in Hell as he fights the demons, but in his head as fights his own inner demons, outside the view of the player.
    The last level, before the boss, is Approaching the Inmost Gate. This part of the game is enormously difficult. This marks Doomguy's final real struggle against himself, and only by accepting that Hell is where he belongs can he finally overcome this last gauntlet. Killing the Mother Demon and sealing himself in Hell reflects all of his personal growth. He has become who he was in Doom 1 and 2. Not out of necessity, but out of personal choice. He overcomes his PTSD, he overcomes his fear, and seals himself in Hell, for what he believes to be the rest of eternity. This final step, fittingly, is called The Return Home.
    Doom 64 is the only Doom game with any real character development outside the lore in Doom Eternal. If I was to write a Doom movie, it would be based on Doom 64 for certain. The soundtrack would get more metal towards the end though.

      you're right, but also, as explained in eternal, all universes in the doom franchise are connected through the same hell, so it is, in its own way, still sort of canon as an alternate universe

    • @DeadPixel1105
      @DeadPixel1105 2 года назад +1

      Why do people need a developer to explain that to them? Simply playing Doom 3 and observing the plot makes it beyond obvious that the game is supposed to be a 'reboot' of the original Doom. It was obvious to me within 5 minutes of playing Doom 3 for the very first time on release day back in 2004. I would have thought a person would need to be incredibly dense and lacking in basic common sense to play Doom 3 and not immediately realize it's a re-telling of the original story and not connected to the rest of the franchise.

    The sound effects are taken from the PS1 port of Doom and Final Doom and the music was composed by Aubrey Hodges, who also did the music for the PS1 port.
    The Rune upgrades for the Unmaker also serve as keys that will allow you to close those three gates, which makes the final level even easier, because you don't have to fight all the enemies and you can just kill the boss and be done within a minute.

      The big problem Doom 3 has is the the Timeline. Doom 1 and 2 both take place in 2022 while Doom 64 takes place post 2023 a very 90s futuristic look like Total recall, Aliens etc. Explains why the Doom Marine armour looks so retro (love that look of doom) while Doom 3 takes place over 130 years later around 2150s same time frame as Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. Doom 3 is most likely set before the events in Doom 2016 Mars City gets attacked by demons and a lone marine with the help of some scientists stop this. The Doom Marine in Doom 3 I don’t think is the original Doom Guy at this time the Doom Guy would’ve been in that tomb for who knows how many years definitely over 100 explaining the time difference from Doom 64 (he fights with the Sentinals for a number of years and becomes the Slayer leading to him getting trapped in Hell) hell is a different dimension so Time most likely passes lower outside the dimension Earth moves on from the events in Doom 64 and then the Doom Slayer is found and brought out.

    • @warellis
      @warellis 4 года назад +6

      IIRC there are implications Doom Slayer may have been the hero that saved the Martians in Doom 3, from what we see about the Soul Cube.
      So it seems more like it's:
      Doom 1->Doom 2->Doom 64->Doom 3 (way back in the past when the Martians were around)->Doom 2016->Doom Eternal
      Doom 3's Marine is more like his timeline's Doom Guy, but not the Doom 1 Doom Guy.

      If Quake III is still canon parallel universes exist. The UAC in newDoom is a lot more like the one on Doom3 than Doom 1/2/64 , so (unless Eternal contradicts this) my best bet at connecting them togheter is that the earth in newDoom is actually the one from Doom3, while the Doom Slayer is (as now confirmed) from the original Doom universe, and is not the same person as the Marine from Doom3.

It was basically a resource swap directly from the D64 cartridge ROM with stock doom based on the doomsday source port. I believe the levels were recreated separately and there were some glitches (like with the terraformer, basically had to noclip that part of the level). Also for some fucking reason, the guy who made it included chaigunners as an add in....of all the monsters. I fully agree - the music featured by Doom 64 is like no other game - it uniquely strikes fear more significantly than any horror/thriller game I have ever played, including well after the game is over. The soundtrack of this game really left behind a legacy of scare for me. Additionally, the nature of the levels as you navigate through them always had me uneasy because of their appearance and darkness, but the soundtrack very often raised the level of fear while venturing deeper into the already very eerie levels, and the threatening skies that accompanied them. This notion was further amplified by new monsters (randomly) appearing at sections of levels when keys are collected or switches pressed. The original Doom 64 was also naturally dark for almost all levels, even with maximum brightness applied. I remember how these elements alone just made me want to finish each level as quickly as possible (or even turn off the console because of being too scared to complete the maps). Just the sound of you opening doors and riding lifts made me feel like every monster in the level can hear me using them.
      Even after nearly 24 years later, many of the soundtrack still extensively haunt me, notably for The Final Outpost, Dark Citadel, Breakdown, and Pitfalls. The distant cries heard in Alter of Pain and the second secret level (The Lair) also disturbed me. Playing this game at night truly provided the ultimate terror experience and sometimes yielded nightmares, including until now.

    The music in 64 was probably my biggest complaint with the atmosphere. It's good for a horror game vibe but it doesn't really hit me as DooM music but it's whatever, I had a bigger issue with the amount of traps and trying to find my way around but boy I got super pissed when I accidentally bricked my save by hitting a quick save before picking up a key card which opened up a bunch of monster closets nearby and I instantly died no matter what I did.

    On the Mother Demon...
    When you're fighting her without an Upgraded Unmaker, it's a much slower process, but you can Diagonal Strafe around the teleporter buildings to outrun the missiles, then get off a few shots at the boss with a Rocket or SSG. You just run a giant oval around the buildings, fire on your way back, oval, fire on your way back, repeat.
    Again, super slow, but you can get to where she won't even hit you.

    Potential Doom Eternal Spoilers(?)
    The theory that Doom 3 may be the first in the timeline is fascinating. The Soul Cube is in Doom Eternal as an easter egg, but that may mean it actually belongs to the Doom Marine because he got it during the events of Doom 3...also, looking at the Doom Guy in Doom Eternal, the resemblance with the Doom marine from Doom 3 is there, they both have short black hair and the facial features as well look pretty similar.
    I had personally scrapped the idea of Doom 3 being canon because they obviously follow the old games, but I didn't see this as a possibility.

    Well, DOOM 1993 already starts off with you having JUST arriving on Mars. It's already mentioned that Doomguy literally just arrived in E1M1 to find his fellow marines dead and demons taking over. HOWEVER, there IS a theory that DOOM 3 takes place some time before Doom 2016, as the sarcophagus you find in the game in a room full of Doomguy illustrations is theorized to be Doomguy's coffin that Samuel Hayden and his team find in Hell. So the theorized timeline seems to be Doom 1993 -> Doom 2: Hell on Earth -> Doom 64 -> Doom 3 -> Doom (2016) -> Doom Eternal

    • @Jarekthegamingdragon
      @Jarekthegamingdragon  4 года назад

      That theory doesn't hold up because Doom guy just broke into mars' orbit right at the beginning of Doom 3, with mars being completely normal.

    • @TheAkrillion
      @TheAkrillion 4 года назад +1

      @@Jarekthegamingdragon Err, not quite sure if you mean Doom 1's story or the theory that Doomguy is in the coffin in Doom 3, but let me just try to get on the same page first. I in no way believe that the sarcophagus in Doom 3 is the coffin you start on in Doom 2016. Doom 3 was an attempted reboot on the Quake 4 engine, that went for horror more than action, while Doom 2016, as stated by the devs before its release, is a "soft reboot"(which we know what it means now). Official story as stated by many sources, including the original guidebook of Doom 1993, is that Doomguy disobeyed orders from a commanding officer to shoot the civilians and instead punched the officer in the face, for which he was incarcerated on Mars. There was an outbreak of demons on Phobos and Deimos, so UAC sent Doomguy and some marines from Mars to Phobos to contain the outbreak, this is where Doom 1993 starts, unlike Doom 3, where the invasion starts on Mars/Mars City.
      Now, after the quick recap and being on the same page, the Doom 3 theory where it's thought that Doomguy from the OG franchise is in the sarcophagus makes some sense in a way with current canon, but back in the day, the tablets were just an homage, while the sarcophagus just looks like a coffin for a pharaoh, something that's VERY DIFFERENT from the coffin in 2016. However, it's fact now that there are multiple universes and Doomguy has been travelling through them to kill demons. So unless the DLC or Doom 3: 3 Doom 5 Me(2024) says that the 2016 universe that Doomguy from 1993 appears in is the same as Doom 3, there's no way that the sarcophagus you see is in any way meant for Doomguy.

      @@TheRealJochen Judging from the map format used in a ripped version of Doom 64's ROM, the engine used is similar to what was used in the original doom games - a bunch of vertices, connected with linedefs and defined with sidedefs which are then interpretted by the engine as a 3d world. I suppose in it's own way that makes it a 3d model. No doubt they added a bunch of their own features which try to make use of the hardware rendering of the N64, but as far as I'm aware the 3d nature of the levels is no more 3d than the ones in the original doom.
      I was able to conclude with my own testing that in the modern port of Doom 64, if you used noclip in certain places you could avoid the linedefs which would trigger certain parts of the map changing shape silently - these changes would give the impression of a fully 3d environment. Admittedly it's a different engine (the KEX engine vs whatever engine was used in doom 64 originally), but I think it would be strange that they would remove features from that iteration of the engine if not for the purpose of making it easier to import the original levels. Give it a go; if you have the pc version of doom 64, find a place that would normally be 3d and try using noclip at certain points with relation to that area. Outpost Omega is where I did my testing.
      I hope that made sense. I'm interested in any more information you may come across about the subject, or even if I got any details wrong.

You discard the whole, but carry over the elements you think work best with what you had in mind for your sequel.
    Doom 64 was just easier to say "Well we can tie this into Doom 2016" because the only story there were 3 walls of text as you said. That's far, far easier to tie into a sequel than say, Half-Life and Half-Life 2.
