  • Welcome back to Hops & Gnarly! Today I’m brewing an English Barleywine on my 7.5 gallon Brewer’s Edge Mash and Boil. For this 3 gallon batch I’m using almost 12 pounds of grain which should push me to just over 9% ABV. I’ll be honest, this is far from my favorite style but it’s going to help me with a long term project that we’ll get into later on.
    Also (spoiler alert) I’m walking through the steps I took to build a new home brewery.
    Now, let’s make some beer!

    The subs are climbing. Nice to see. Don’t know if you noticed, but you got a mention on Homebrew 4 Life the other week as “The dude with the glasses”.

      Ah shoot - thanks for pointing that out just updated. Must have been habit. Also, 🤯 it's you! I found the sink and a couple other pieces on Facebook marketplace. It was a little tricky to get it rigged up with the hose but it's super convenient to have. Thanks for checking this out, Brian!

    Interesting! And remarkable that two of my favorite brewers would release Barleywine vids on the same day...I think this portends an an exploration of this same style for me in the near future...as soon as a batch finishes. I'm of Welsh and Irish extraction, maybe it's a genetic thing, but I prefer floral or malt forward brews, not so much the US trend to hop the crap of the IPA styles.

    • @HopsANDgnarly

    Sweet set up! What things would you have done differently to avoid chip out with the plywood. Thinking of doing something similar! Great videos!

      I would probably tape over where the holes are going to be before drilling and then use minimal pressure when drilling the holes. It will take a long time but I think it’d look nicer in the end. Either way I love the pegboard!

    I’m really curious if you’ll have to “wake up” the yeast later in the fermentation by shaking it up a bit or repitch a second round of fresh yeast to get it down to target FG. Genus Brewing has a lot of pointers on this style and they suggest some pretty odd approaches that sound a bit crazy, but evidently work.

    • @HopsANDgnarly
      @HopsANDgnarly  3 года назад

      I'll have to check those videos out. I'm tempted to add some Brett when I move it into that barrel but I think a repitch of WLP001 makes the most sense.

    Just found your channel via Martins Homebrew challenge. Love your editing style and the voiceover works really well 👍 using the keg fridge as a make shift glycol bath is genius. How well does that work?

      Thanks! This beer has been holding steady at 65F for almost two weeks and I haven’t had to think about it at all. Doing something like a lager at 50F might be different but I’d be willing to try
