in the late summer, i was in central park with my friends playing soccer. then i see shaham arriving with his kid and his wife adele anthony. they were wearing masks and gloves , seemed like they were going for a family picnic. I didnt want to get to close to him though to social distancing but i couldnt help to let one of my idols know that i recognized him. I yelled out Maestro Shaham, I love your playing !!!!! He simply stopped and said Thank you like the most humble person. Shaham is one of the most approachable of ppl and given his prestige as a virtuoso and talent he is EXTREMELY down to earth!! A guy you can have a drink or dinner with like the average joe!!!

I heard Gil live in Pittsburgh playing the Berg violin concerto in 2002 - Jansons conducting. Shaham was fantastic. He wore an ill fitting suit(schlubby comfortable) adding to how modestly he carried himself, this in contrast to a not so modest talent. Gil was interviewed by a local paper where he humbly laid out his ideas on the Berg and how MTT had to convince him to not fear the Berg, to think he had reservations of his ability! He has the intelligence and emotional depth to play anything. Thank you for highlighting Gil. Love this guy.

I had the privilege of seeing Gil Shaham live here in America’s Dairyland. After the first movement of the Tchaikovsky, the audience erupted into applause, and with good reason. It was a truly bravura performance and Shaham played that concerto better than I’ve ever heard or seen anyone else do it. It is a bit silly we’re getting this huge memorial box for a guy who is still very much alive, even if under contract with someone else if it was DG that dropped GS rather than vice versa. Anyway, it’s great that this compilation is out there. If I was a man who bought violin concerti and other violin works, I’d be on this like white on rice.

I couldn't agree with you more, David. Gil Shaham is such a class act and an amazing violinist. The Korngold/Barber, the two Prokofiev Violin Concertos and the Bartok 2nd concerto are some of my all-time favorites! I wish he'd record the Shostakovich violin concertos. I'll bet they'd be fantastic. That and some newer ones like the Ligetti and Ades. Or how about the complete Beethoven violin sonatas with his sister on piano? There is so much repertoire he hasn't recorded that would just be wonderful. DG really screwed up letting him go. But they wasted a talent such as his on too many little violin candy pieces when they should have been recording more interesting things. How about the Dvorak Violin Concerto!? Can you imagine! How perfect he would be for that?

I must admit , that Gil Shaham is terra incognita for me. Thank you for your video. I ordered the box some minutes ago. And still no overflow room 😉. Greetings from Northern Germany

Gil played the greatest Prokofiev 2 in La Jolla a few years ago. On youtube. Unbelievable! He is the only violinist who can compete with the old boys (Oistrak, Milstein et all). He uses lots of bow, like they did. You can smell burning resin!

One of my favorite musicians! His two discs of 1930s violin concertos on Canary Classics are also wonderful.

His recording of Mozart sonatas with his sister ("Mozart in Paris") on Canary Classics is one of my favorites.
DG would rather push the next Flavor of the Month, apparently. Daniel Lozakovich, anyone?

One of my favorite violinist too. Since he quits DG the production of his output is less polish, but he is really exciting in concert with always a smile.
There is a new CD of Berg VC with MTT on the corner, watch it out.

Thanks Dr Hurwitz. Hi might well be the greatest living violinist. Your opinion of his live mini series of XX century concertos?

Agreed on the John Williams Violin Concerto and Treesong. Why Williams' concert works get short shrift is beyond me.

I am really surprised Shaham's Four Seasons hasn't been reissued by DG a thousand times; in the mid-90's that thing was everywhere. I remember Shaham and the Orpheus CO made a music video of one of the Winter movements and The Weather Channel played it non-stop. I think only A-S Mutter out PR'ed that release.

Please! Could you consider to make a talk about recordings of Bruckner's 8th and 9th symphonies. Best wishes

Maybe DG let Shaham go because he was too sane for the industry.

While googling around, I found another possible reason why Gil Shaham might have yielded the first violin part of Pärt's Tabula Rasa to Adele Anthony, one that other happily married men will well understand. 😉. Fortunately, Shaham has continued to issue fine music on his own Canary Classics label with presumably complete artistic control, though DG indeed did splendidly by him. It's interesting that of all the great violin repertoire, he's never recorded the Beethoven Concerto. Maybe someday.

@@DavesClassicalGuide Looking forward. BTW, I just listened to Shaham's Bartok 2 remake with Deneve and the Stuttgart RSO.The Boulez is perfectly fine, but the Deneve is fabulous! The energy of the collaboration between soloist and conductor is palpable. I've never been so gripped by this piece.

@@DavesClassicalGuide This was going to be my question, too. I was thinking perhaps he had the foresight to see where the "big labels" were going (i.e., nowhere but down), and that the future might well be in "own label" work, with the cost of "publishing" dropping all the time.
But dumping him? And for Gringolts? Sheesh! What boneheads!

I was going to note the husband/wife thing, but I see three others have already done so... one other advisory: the Kreisler title is “Liebesleid” NOT “Liebeslied”, love’s sorrow, the companion to “Liebesfreud”

DG obviously has gone mad; rarely now do they produce new true artists. they are more commercially oriented than ever

  • @frankgyure3154
    @frankgyure3154 3 года назад

The major labels UMG(DG,Decca etc) Warner Classical(which bought EMI) and Sony Classical are just a disaster. Sony Classical is a shell of its former self with few new recordings but releasing older recordings in budget boxes. Warner may be the best at A&R. Decca and DG continuously find “new” talent, release one or two CD’s and then discarded with finding more new talent and that cycle has been going on a yearly basis

DG is worthless. Their new website looks like it was designed by a junior high school student, their new artists are garbage. They're on their way out. They used to be a good label, but their marketing and repertoire decisions of the last few years make zero sense.
