Saw the Briadway Evita with Patti Lapone & Mandy. Saw the film version with Madonna and the special with Elaine Page. Of the 3, the best were Elaine and Patti. Their voices were natural where Madonna's was forced. That's the difference in being professionally trained, Elaine and Patti. As for Che, both actors, Antonio and Mandy did great.

Towards the end, Elaine looks around surveying the theatre. It was a look that seemed to realize this might be the last time she would reenact her iconic role that she had performed on stage so many times for decades, and yet she nailed it. What a timelessly beautiful, triumphant, and perfect performance.

  • @TheSeeker246

She is amazing, the tone of her voice is just sublime. She actually tells a really funny story about her dress arriving literally minutes before she was due on stage for this performance and having to frantically run around the theatre to find her entrance. Her heart was thudding in her chest from exertion as she made her way down the stairs only for the stage hand to not have set the height for her mike correctly! You cant tell of course, she is the consummate pro❤

@@kboyer1 I honestly cannot remembet where i saw/heard it - it was some sort of interview where they mentioned or showed this clip and she went on to give that anecdote. She was laughing about it! Basically her dress was being custom made (designer ofc) and literally arrived about 15 mins before she was due on stage. So the costume lady was trying to alter her dress and get it on her, all the while they wre running about back stage trying to figure out where she makes her entrance. She said her heart was racing from exersion by the time she made her appearance and was walking down that staircase. Only to be dismayed that her mike wasnt at the right height!

It is as if the designer took their cue from a 1950's gown but decided ''style'' was unimportant and ''concept'' was all that was needed with no thought to flattering the wearer. To those who say of artistes that he/she is 'just' a musical theatre performer, not a real singer... Musical theatre requires so much of its performers; not only the ability to carry a tune but also the ability to tell a story and express emotion, often through no more than the most subtle tonal shift or catch in the voice--and to do it day in, day out, everyday and live every time.
Elaine Paige is a star of the West End and a truly a great singer--as this video so amply demonstrates. Compare this live performance with the highly polished but ultimately bland and emotionless performance of the same song by Madonna in the film version.

    Wow, this came perfectly.
Okay, so, storytime: I'm a senior in high school, and I've always wanted to be part of our school's pit orchestra (for the musical) since I was a freshman. I didn't get in my freshman year, but a few months back, I was asked to join the pit orchestra for this year's musical. I happily accepted the invitation. That musical? Evita. It started to look like a very promising end to my senior year. However, on opening night, due to COVID-19, it was canceled. There was always the hope that it would be rescheduled. Unfortunately, today, our state got news that schools for would be closed for the rest of the school year. I definitely needed this video.

For my 16th birthday I got a double cd of the very best of Andrew Loyd Weber. I was a big fan then, still enjoy the music with the original artists. Elaine Paige was a true inspiration for me as I sang in Choir and Musicals through High School. Also Sarah Brightman, I always wished I could sing like Sarah Brightman. This is my kind of music. So beautiful!

She is a singer's singer. Absolutely breathtaking captivating and toxicating and perfect. She owns the audience. Every single moment. That's what it means to put over a song. You don't see performers like her very often. Sure a lot of people have a good voice. But the interpretation? You'll never forget it.

I remember hearing this song by Madonna because she was in the movie Evita. I haven't watched it but this song seemed to be everywhere for the movie. But I'm glad to hear Elaine's version. Which I must say is amazing. She sings this song with such an uplifting and hopeful spirit. I love her as Grizabella in Cat's (where I first heard her sing). When she sings Memory it's really heartbreaking and it felt like her character had 'lost her spirit to live'. These are both amazing and powerful songs She's a very talented and beautiful lady.

It's no longer an interpretation. It is the song itself in its full reality. Weber's score is a faded picture in the drawer, yellow and curled at the edges, without the color and truth of its yet to come original, it's reality. But don't cry for Weber; clap for Paige.
