'73 Chrysler 440 Left To The Crusher?? 9 Months For Sale In The Junkyard...

  • We visit the Newport again only to find it still there!! Cars at this yard usually sell FAST...and rarely sit out for as long as this one. Was likely listed around August and "ready" to go in February, but it has not been bought.
The old manager said they usually give the good cars about 60 days before sending them to the parts yard, although some stayed longer.
With derby rumors and the uncertainty of the yard pulling the plug, will this Chrysler have a second chance at life?

The coupes are rare. Those doors and trunk lid will fit any 1972-73 C-body Mopar 2dr, including Imperials. Since this car endured two fuel crisis during the 1970s (1973 & 1979), I'd say the 62k milage is right; they were expensive to drive.

If the chassis and suspension points are reasonably solid along with the torsion bars and the engine (400 cu in?) is free spinning and the AC compressor and 727 torque flight isn’t bad - fix the car. My folks had the same car in the 70’s. One of the best riding Hwy cars you’ll ever drive.

It's somewhat rare because we didn't think about it, and scrapped cars like this by the dozens. That's why some Oldsmobiles are so rare, when they sold in the hundreds of thousands. A full restoration would get you something that people will notice because these are rarely seen anymore. New Yorkers of this vintage are easier to find. Save it.

@@HotMustang I watched this video because 2 years ago I finally after 6 very long years sold my 74' Chrysler Newport 2 door custom, had the 440-4bbl and fully loaded triple green ivy glow, was in a little bit better condition than this one, and ran with a jump start I drove it up until 8 years ago but not much had non stop problems with it. Put it up for sale for $1995 bargain runs and drives decent side road coverage no takers so after 6 months put it down to $1650 no takers then $1500 then $999 and sat 4 more years until finally someone about a mile away from me offered me $800 cash and I took it. Lost my butt crack and more on this classic only thing he did was put it out in front of his house on a very busy street for $2999. Said bargain classic car, about 3 months later $2495 then I think it was $1995 then absolutely must sell cheap $1399 then $999 getting desperate and low and behold a week ago my loss your gain $799 but still sitting there. Local restoration shop several years ago told me $25-30 frame on and $50-60 k frame off restoration and would be worth $12-15 in mint condition. you only do that if you bought it new and it's a priceless old family friend that you have no plans on parting with it!

I do know a thing or 2 about these cars. One the ballast resistor will go bad with the slightest little crack in it that's on the firewall it's white has 2 or 4 wires going into it not don't remember which. If that's the case the car won't start. The other thing is the radiators in those cars were made too small and they liked to overheat. A lot of guys put bigger radiators in and to avoid that problem, Others put electric fans on them. You're not gonna find a lot of these cars because they've rusted away to Nothing or they've been used up in demolition Derby's. When the Arab oil embargo hit in late 73 a lot of people traded these cars in and A lot got exported. I remember in the mid-seventies seeing a lot of these running around in the Middle East. Is especially Saudi Arabia.

    • @HotMustang

That era they were four wires. They have a reputation for going bad but I think it is pretty rare. I drove cars with them for many years and never had one go bad.
I think having the resistor on the wall where it is easy to replace is better than having resistor wires like some other brands had.

Chryslers of this era were notoriously unreliable, and the quality was terrible. These things are “rare“ for a reason. If you tried to find a 1973 Mercedes or Rolls-Royce, they’d be out there because people kept them. Nobody preserved these Chryslers. If you want a land yacht, go GM

    • @HotMustang

Naw, the 440 and 727 were a great combo, I was around then. Those went away during the gas crunch. Nobody wanted huge cars and clean, one owner cars that size, got crushed by the thousands. You can't buy reproduction parts for them like a Chevelle and so they sit around unless someone falls in love with it. Cherry ones have some value, but most want them for the drivetrain only. They were as reliable as other American cars at the time, no better, no worse.
