8yrs after this video was made, it still helps, Thanks
I love that Tie Fighter! I never had one but my buddy did and enjoyed hours of fun doing dogfights with my X- Wing!
I wish Retroblasting would be televised. Lol, the new version of Saturday morning cartoons would be reviews of Saturday morning cartoons!
Lt. Ripley Grimes I wish it were televised as well! :D
I was able to repair my Tie fighter the same way you did. Now I have two white Tie Fighters that work great. Thank you for your help.
Thanks for posting this video! I performed this restoration on a TIE Fighter I found at my local comic shop and it's working now. Great to see a 37-year old toy tick again!
Well done!!!
Had the same issue withthe battery pack as well. I also reversed the wires on the motor and I think I burned one motor out. Finally was able to do the restoration thanks to this video.
thanks for the video. I just got a 1978 Tie fighter. I opened it up to fix the motor; when I did there was no zip tie for the motor. It was an easy fix. Thanks for showing us how the insides are supposed to be.
Great video. I needed it to figure out how to reassemble a tie fighter. I used the cleaning techniques which gave me contact for the battery. My motor spun by hand but not when i pushed the button. I ended up adding 3in1 oil on the outer shaft of the motor and after some penetration time, it finally spun on its own. Cheaper then a 3rd party replacement motor. And original. Thanks
this was another great restoration, adding the tie pilot at the end was a nice touch,it makes the fighter truly complete.
Mark Demeo Yeah, I received him from a subscriber randomly who wanted him (and a Bespin Guard) to have a good home. More on the Bespin Guard in the next Star Wars Follies...
The term you're looking for at 3:00 is "rivet". Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for the video; it helped me to fix my Tie Fighter. Very Happy Adult Kid.🤜🏼👍🏻
Love this videos Michael 🙂
Another nice Restoration Video *****
Thanks from France, i can look after the white's mine . It missed him the part for the batery that you had made. To me to do the same. 🙏👍 and happy new year.
Great work! this restore looked to be one of your most challenging ones yet.
Man you guys are making history here with your restoration videos. Thanks so much for doing these!
Thanks for all the tips.
Just found your channel and have been loving every second of it. Awesome content!
Really enjoyed this. Thanks!
t00lnin You're welcome!
You Sir, are the SHIZZNICK. Another great job as usual. Your name henceforth shall be known as, ''MikeGyver'' HUZZAH!!!
Nice video. My white tie fighter was given to me second hand by a friend in 1985. The laser light didn't work but I didn't care my tie fighter pilot had a ship to fly in. Then in 1989 it was accidentally thrown away while moving and I only have the wings to this day. Trying to see if I can find a body to attach to the wings. They are pricey out there but not going t give up looking for one.
I like the way the old Kenner vehicles looked. Very basic.
Probably should use the tiniest drop of hot melt glue to secure replacement battery contact. Hot melt glue holds really well, but it can fairly easily be removed without leaving any damage to the surrounding plastic simply by using low heat from a hair dryer to slightly soften it and them pulling it free.
Or very gently cut it away with a sharp X-acto hobby knife... :) OL J R :)
I just put a video up of my original w box, instructions, and 1978 JCPenney Xmas catalog - the toy was $9.97(!) I had to take it apart to unsieze the motor just by turning the gear a few times. It hadn't been used since the early 80's. The thing was a nightmare to put back together. The springs shot across the room ; I put electrical tape around the motor to hold it in place better. Mine has a white plastic gear. Even though video recordings can be a bit different, I can tell mine sounds a little different.
Tie pilot: yay
I just watched nother restoration video. Battery configuration is correct. Backwards 👍
Another great video. Interestingly I've just taken art a white Tie Fighter and the motor is zip ted in.
You're lucky that your pilot is still in somewhat good condition! Mine is missing a leg. I have a hobby of sculpting, so I recently sculpted him a robotic leg after finding a box of old figures.
dang that sounds cool! i'm a little too young to have played with any of this stuff, I was born in 88 so most of this was before me but dang this stuff is cool!
my white tie fighter just like this one has the spring contact in it and the motor was intact zip tied.. also my Vader tie fighter also has the spring contact and that told me I had the earlier run of these two awesome ships.
Great video, I would love to see you do an Imperial shuttle restoration.
meatloafknight I'm so thankful my Imperial Shuttle is in excellent condition. However, maybe one day someone will need our help with one...
Where is part 1?
1:18 Oh what a task!!!
Hi, your video is very interesting :). My engine is dead, do you know if I can find another one in electronic shop ? thank you.
instantly hooked subscribed ;D
maybe a dumb question, but how did you know for sure the light was dead..I am currently trying to get a Vader Tie electronics working
like the video. I wish you had given some specs on the motor and where you got it.
Kinda late on this comment, but I only found your channel a few weeks ago. I've been repairing all my old Kenner Star Wars toys and when I opened up my TIE fighter to fix it (the light worked but the motor went out, had to hand crank it for over 15 minutes and it came back to life) I noticed that my battery pack was the same as your Darth Vader TIE fighter not your White one from 1978. My TIE fighter is the white 1978 one but the battery area has the copper plates on both sides not any springs. I wonder if maybe the different factories did it differently or why mine is different from yours?
If you can get some "3 in 1" oil, that's the ideal lubricant for those small hobby motors... a single drop on each end of the motor shaft where it goes into the 'motor can' is all it takes, and a little working of the motor back and forth so it can penetrate into the bushings...
Barring that, mineral oil (from the pharmacy) works well too.
Most of the problems with those old motors is they either get gunked up over time-- fuzz and stuff manages to get in there somehow and winds itself around the shafts, tightening up their clearance with the end bushings in the motor cap and end of the can where the shaft comes out of the motor, causing binding, or the ancient lubricants in there have dried out and gummed up over time, and turned into gooey gunk that's very sticky and pasty and too stiff to allow the motor shaft to turn. Sometimes they get some moisture or crud from the battery in there that corrodes the shaft, which swells up the shaft and causes it to bind or seize in the bushings... turning it and oiling it will usually free them up; new oil will soak into any dried lubricant "gunk" and loosen it up as well, and the new oil will remain to keep the motor lubed...
Later! OL J R :)
Nice idea to leave the model imperfect and great job with the bulb replacement. Can you recommend a good product for restoring yellowed body plastics to white or near white without causing damage?
Adam Tomkins Ehh...peroxide baths and Retr0Brite are the only methods I know of -- and they must be done carefully.
The battery contacts are held down with "hollow rivets"... they're little "T" shaped pieces consisting of a small hollow tube that has one end "mushroomed" into a head in a press, they're installed in the hole from the outside (head side out), the battery clip (or other part) is installed over the tube end protruding on the inside, and then it's pressed in an arbor press to mushroom the inside end of the tube into another head, riveting the parts together permanently...
Later! OL J R :)
hey guys just to let you know I do not know what year it came out but the Star Wars droids cartoon movie came out on DVD also battle for Endor I have both in my Star Wars collection but I'm a big fan I'm not crazy about the toys they had them when I worked in KB Toy Stores back in the days as always love you show
Any chance you'll do more Star Wars Follies videos?
They're always good for a laugh.
TheSerpent753 We have three or four of them planned for this year. They take a lot of time to make so we never rush them.
I wonder if the 90's Star Wars toyline scrapped the idea of a light and sound system for the TIE, because of how complicated and fragile it was.
Also, don't forget to brush your TIE fighters to make sure they're pearly white.
Sharksleep HA!
Ahhhh....been working on the Delorean again. The hazards of classic car restoration and maintenance, doesn't lend well to hand modeling.
Yeah, my original sticker (still in place) on my '78 TIE Fighter is the reverse of how the batteries actually work. I think they might have put some of them in backwards. Both original '78 TIE Fighters I have also have the glue drips around the cannons, and no zip tie on the motor, while the '79 Vader TIE Fighter has the zip tie and is no drips. The panel decals the white TIEs and Vader TIE all came off without any effort, the adhesive just gave up the ghost after all these years (quite the opposite of my '78 vintage X-Wing decals that seem to have molecularly bonded with it).
The TIE Fighter really go no love back in the day. It was the 3rd vehicle to be found on store shelves in '78 after the Landspeeder then X-Wing. And while the X-Wing got its pilot figure in '79, the TIE had to wait to get it's pilot until well in '82. Then it had to wait a year for its improved version after the X-Wing got its update in '82, and then was gone at the end of '83. TIE Fighter.....always a brides maid, never a bride.
Brett Fraser Exactly. The TIE Fighter was the underdog, even in its own class as the Vader TIE got a re-release and the Interceptor showed up. And yeah, the DeLorean always manages to put one of its fiberglass and/or stainless steel edges on my hands somewhere during a repair job.
Another informative and thoughtful restoration Guys. On a separate note being curious are there emerging generations within your family that share your interest, do you ever think about the collections future? Trust your both well, Cheers, Fuzz.
Any chance to show how to repair the electric motor?
When are you gonna fix my goddamn arms?
"When you fix this goddamn door!" Lol, someone had to say it
is it possible to retrobrite a transformer Jetfire figure to restore the plastic from yellow to white again?
tom Yes, but it will fade the red paint.
I was wondering do you have a box of broken ships to repair ships like these or do you just search out broken parts for specific projects, another great video as usual.
The Queen & toy collector I sometimes (rarely) have the parts laying around. Most of the time, I'm seeking out parts for specific projects.
hey guys love your show I just want to find out by any chance do you sell your refurbish figures or ships would love to get my hands on you thank you so much J
What are different 1997 AT-AT IMPERIAL WALKER side head guns. Also what about reproduced 3-D prints.
Nice job! Sort of on topic: Have you seen the "TIE Fighter - short film" on RUclips? Retro style animated fan made Star Wars film, I'm sure you'll appreciate it on some level.
Mrster I have. I remember back when it was just 60 seconds. Seeing the full 7 minute short is quite awesome.
The same animator also made a Doctor Who anime short a few years ago, featuring the Third Doctor.
Just out of curiousity, is there any retro toy that you know of that can never be restored?
The Framemaster Hmmm...depends on how much damage you're willing to submit a toy to...For example, a G.I. Joe Sky Hawk is glued together. No screws, no clips. You'd have to rip it apart, "fix it" and build it back up with some kind of resin sculpt for the missing areas, at which point, would the effort even be worth the nightmare? I dunno...
***** Yeah, there are a few things where the base hull is in bad shape. A full resto may be pointless when a good condition one is easily available. But the army builder figures and vehicles don't need to be perfect to fill out the background in a diorama, with the better versions in front. I've also found some of the ragged ones do tend to make good battle damage versions for a diorama too. Or all else fails, a good basis for a custom.
have you ever done a Restoration to a y-wing fighter? my electronics don't work anymore.
Landing gear in the Y-Wing is a big problem point that has never been fixed on any version of it. They all sag in the back.
Hello....I have spent hours trying to get the mtoro going.....I ve done all the cleaning and the motor does fire up if I do straight wiring directly to the motor.......So I really dont know how to get the motor going with the push on button....It seems to be stiff and only move 1 milimetre down..and doesnt come up again...............So the question is....does the push down button have a spring or anything to push the button up ???....It looks like the coppers dont seem to touch themselfs by pressing down the buttton............Can you plese have a look underneath the copper where the black cable goes..if there is a spring in there ??..I cant get the engine going by pressing the button...I can only get it going if I put a straight cable from one end of the battery (the one which is suppposed to be the black one) directly to the grey entrance to engine....There is no problem with the red.....But it doesnt stop if connected directly.....So the push down button is my problem and I dont know how to over come this.......Finally...you my engine works where ever I put in the batteries..any way around as long as they are inverted....the make the engiine work which every way...........So I would kindly appreciate if you can advise on how to get the motor going by pressing the button.................The light doesnt go on...but it doesnt matter ...I really wish for the sound to go on by pressing the button.....Please let me know......BEST REGARDS & THANK YOU !
The pilot canopy doesn't close on these? At the end the pilots head is out, I never owned one of these so I am asking for clarity...interesting.
1980Triumph It closes just fine. See the video thumbnail? I was just goofing around showing the pilot in his new ship.
+1980Triumph My three TIE fighters close up with figures fine too. Even Vader in his TIE. The do have a tendency to not close snug together, popping up in the middle but that's due to the hinges.
***** OK, thanks for the info, per the video I thought they were designed that way, thank goodness, couldn't imagine the pilot head hanging out.
The pilot's head might stick out the hatch if the seat doesn't slide all the way down in the tracks. The arms on the seat that fit into the track are a common stress point. One of my seats has one broken off. I could see it getting stuck halfway down if anything is stressed, bent, or not aligned right.
Brett Fraser Thanks for the update
So with the epoxy you used I would guess it is now impossible to fix the led in the future.
You'd have to cut through it with a sharp hobby knife like they did in the video... the key is not using too much... *just enough* to hold the part in place is all that's needed.
Later! OL J R :)
Do a tv show
What happened to part 1?

Are you going to do a cartoon rant on G.I. Joe the move from 1987?
the_exploding __creeper Maybe
Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow
Also, good riddance to the days of not having digital sound. that motor sound for blasters on these old toys is so bad!
I've been annoyed with how they only had one light instead of two and that the light color doesn't match the movie. Why didn't they put green LED's on the TiE's? ridiculous!
This was from 1978. They only had a few basic photographs to work from. They barely had any time to get a toy line off the ground. And they were a small manufacturer compared to the others in the industry.
@@timothyward8695 right, but then they didn't update them in later releases either.
This looks way too complex for me even with instructions. Amazing to watch though.
Is that cocaine on the table? :0
tappajavittu Yes. I openly display cocaine in videos seen by thousands of people. It's how I live on the edge.
***** You'll never know!
So are u and Melinda like married? 😐
