- Hike No. 6.
This time I was prepared to hike 4 days in a row until the Universe had other plans for me...
***
I am hiking a trail that leads 820km from one ending of Estonia to another. I will hike it through in sections and document all my mishaps and discoveries during it all. I'm a total beginner in this hiking thing and I will learn on the way. I invite you to take part of this learning process! :)

Love your videos! My wife & I just discovered them yesterday. We are almost 70 years old and live on Puget Sound (In the USA near Canada and the Pacific Ocean). Had to give up backpacking for health reasons years ago. Enjoy while you can!
Sorry about the headaches. I have a suggestion for hot days when you are NOT sick. Years ago I set a daily schedule something like this. Arise before sunrise, say 5 a.m. Drink some water, eat a light snack, then pack up and go. Get a couple of hours hiking behind you before breakfast. It is the coolest part of the day, mostly shady, and the best time to see birds and other wild life.
Stop at a beautiful location, have a relaxed breakfast and take a nap. By now it is 8 or 9 O'Clock. Probably still cool. Hike another 2 or 3 hours. By this time it is getting hot and should be close to lunch time. Stop at a place with shade, and if possible, with drinking water, and swimming water. Set up enough of a camp to relax for 4 to 6 hours. Eat, swim, read, sleep, enjoy the heat rather than hate it.
By now, the hottest part of the day is over. Depending on the heat and how you feel, hike an hour before the evening meal, or just eat it there. We American's are used to supper at 5 or 6 p.m. After supper, hike another hour or two before bed time. As in the morning, there is less sun, more shade, and more wildlife. Where we live there is also the advantage of putting a few kilometers between your supper food smell and your night time camp site in case there are bears (or other wild life) are in the area.
Another way to deal with heat. Look at pictures of people in places like India and North Africa. Also cowboys in North America. They tend to wear light colored loose clothing covering most of their bodies. I'm guessing that protection from the sun is their reason for the fashion choice.
Working outdoors in the mountains for many years, I found that I could avoid a mosquito problem by wearing a hooded nylon jacket on even the hottest days. Elastic or velcro wrist and ankle bands kept the mosquitos out of my clothes. Steadily waving my hands in front of my face kept the clouds of insects away from my face and hands.
Estonia looks beautiful! Hope you are still hiking!
+Puget So helpful tips, thank you so much! I haven't thought of dividing the day like this and it sounds like a super idea. Indeed the middle of the day is always the worst and it would help a lot to not walk on these hours. It is funny how some ideas are so simple and so genius! On my next trip I will try it 😊
That's a nice lake, and no alligators too. Hello from Florida, USA.
Its NOT quitting. Its self preservation. As someone who gets Migraines myself, I know exactly what you are talking about. I never travel without painkillers of some sort. I always have access to them somehow. Rob.
Your videos are most refreshing and nicely done. Thanks for sharing them.
You are doing great things for Tourism Estonia! I never had any idea how beautiful the country is. Thanks for your really interesting and also entertaining posts!
You can only tell your body what to do for so long...then your body tells you what to do! Good that you listened- I don't get headaches often but when I do I am miserable and useless.
Love watching your videos. It makes me want to get out in the countryside even more.
I often camp out but i'm not a hiker. I have a motorcycle and camp from there.
What a beautiful country. I am loving your videos! Thank you for sharing.
You called it right - It pays to know when it is time to listen to your body... Love your channel!
Most people won't even go backpacking alone so you're already doing more than most. I backpack alone as well and fully understand how you must take precautions if you are not well since if you start cramping up or something you're stranded. Even after you decided to head home you still had so much more traveling to do there's definitely no judgement here.
You made the right decision. The mountains (and trails) will always be there for you tomorrow.
Hello. Maybe it can help for next time if you wear sun glasses. Extreme brightness (from the sun) also gives me migraines, but I never get them when I wear polarized lenses.
Good for you in knowing when to quit and head for home. Hiking is supposed to be fun and when it's not fun, it's time to pack it in and come back another day. Thank you for sharing the good with the not so good. I admire and respect you for that. Thanks for bringing us along.. Best wishes...... Ax
I'm sorry about your headache. It was a beautiful sunrise! Thank you for sharing!
Hi from Australia. I've just found your channel and I think it's great, looking forward to seeing all your videos.
I recently discovered your well made hiking-videos showing the beautiful landscape of your country. You are really courageous to do your long distance hinkings on your own. Sometimes it the best thing to finish a tour and take care of your healthiness. I look forward to your next adventures. Greetings from Germany, Jürgen.
+Weser Outdoor When hiking Estonia you are never too far from civilisation (as the country is really small and we do not have any remote mountains etc) and doing my first solo hikes here is the best place to start :)
I live in a little village surrounded by mountains and you inspire me to go hiking. Thanks ☀
I discovered your channel today and am enjoying your adventures. I was sorry to see that you developed a migraine, but I was glad that you realized your limitation and didn't try to push on and make matters worse. Thank you for taking us along with you on these journeys. You have a beautiful country and a very charming spirit. -Linda
Good job! I'm so very proud of you for listening to yourself. Most people don't have the courage you displayed! Way to go! See you on the trail another time!
+Mike Taylor thank you :)
+Hiker in Estonia : also.. I got EATEN UP one time too many (50 bites).. so I pack my bug repellent FIRST! lol. ;)
I really enjoy the positive attitude you have throughout your videos. Even if it's tough for you. And you paint nice pictures along the way which I never saw anyone do! Thank you for sharing your adventures and greetings from Germany.
Greetings right back at you!
So great to see your countryside. It looks beautiful - especially that lake!
I fully agree that sometimes you have to have a Reality Check and decide that it's best to turn back - I ended up turning back from a planned 4-day winter hike in the Tararuas. Hadn't gone far when my health took a downward turn and I had to go back - good thing I did, too, because my brother and his friend reported that the weather took a really nasty turn on the second day and it would've been potentially life-threatening if I had been there.
No point endangering yourself or having a negative affect on your health.
I think it was a smart thing to do. You can always come back and start again. I think you're awesome!
Great production in your video. Soundtrack, your commentary...
Sorry you felt bad. Your 'roll with it attitude' is admirable.
As someone who lives where it gets 115F+ (46C) every summer, I suggest drinking electrolyte drinks (like Gatorade or similar) rather than water, and drink more than you think you need. Wear a large brim straw hat to help keep your head cool. Use a wet towel to keep your arms and neck damp. Slow your walking pace, slow and steady. Learning to survive heat is a learned skill, same as surviving cold is.
Thank you for posting a real life experience
It was a shame that you could not finish your hike as planned. But you did the right thing. Wow...Beauty AND brains. Very good. Estonia is also beautiful. Reminds me of upstate New York in some ways. Love your videos. Stay healthy and I'll keep watching and learning. Thank you.
what a beautiful sunrise. Knowing your limits is knowing to survive. Love your channel. Keep the videos coming 👍 😉
Bug and sun combination spray, military bug net, chap stick are always in my basic or core kit because they weigh a few ounces and are usually needed. I always have 2 glasses. Sun and clear safety glasses as well in my core kit. I also hike and sleep with light gloves that have bug spray on them. Lowcut walking or running shoes are good up to 25 pound pack unless you have weak ankles, biting chiggers, sand or really rocky terrain. For me, cooler feet less blisters. Not being hydrated enough can cause a headache. I realize a lot of young women are hormonal which causes migraines. Being sick on the trail is a " no go". I enjoyed the vid. Thanks for bringing me a long.
like someone else has commented, dehydration causes headaches,i drink loads, and coffee may give people a temporary kick, but it dehydrates aswell.
Electrolyte powder mixed with water is great, can even get nice flavours.
Hiker..... catching up on some of your earlier videos. Your photography is terrific.... you have a knack!! Wise of you to quick ifn you're not feeling well. I know you finish the hike... so no gig deal. Loved the shot of your feet and toes in the lake, popping up and dow. Looked so cute. Thanks for sharing..... Ax
Thank you for that feedback/compliment! 😊
Aww no! Hope you feel better soon and your not quiting there is always more time for hiking! The hardest thing is leaving the house xx
I hate mosquitoes. I won't camp without a bug net on my tent or hammock. Except in winter. Sorry about your headaches. My wife goes through that too. I can't even imagine it! Even in your pain, you manage to put on a good video. I keep running across your videos and they are quite good. I just subscribed. You'd love where we live, 35 miles from the PCT. But any wilderness is great. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your journey. I like your videos a lot. Keep up the good work. Atb. Ian.
Love your videos =)
It's so good that you share the good times and the bad times. I learn alot =)
Thank you
well done, there will be another day to hike and enjoy the hiking without headaches
so like your videos !! thanks for sharing with us all and the hard work involved !! Blessings young lady.
knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing when to continue. If you do hike in heat - you really do need to watch the amount of water you are consuming - make sure to drink a LOT. I have also found that having some tablets (Nuun) or "sport" candy (Sport Beans, Sharkies) is a good idea - they will help replace lost salt from sweating and replenish electrolytes as well.
You did the right thing paying attention to your health and making a well reasoned decision. Your country is beautiful and your photography is much nicer than most posted on RUclips. So, well done, and I look forward to watching more of your adventures (this was my first of you). wbm
you did the right thing by going home .. you have to know your body and treat it right... stay healthy
i am enjoying seeing your country though your eyes... and you look good too
Hello to all fellow hikers out there that get migraines in general and while hiking. I have learned to carry a small bottle of either coconut water or "Gatorade" or "Powerade". It's the electrolytes and sodium needed to aleviat some of the pain. doesn't always work for everybody but hopefully it will help.
I love this channel, great video!
Estonia looks really nice ! thanks for the video.
Hike with an umbrella , keeps sun off & if it rains lightly . Drink more water it helps . I have been enjoying your journey .
Ginger root is good against migraine. You can eat it and you can also make tea form it. And it is also very good against nasea. I always take a piece of ginger root with me when I go hiking and even in my EDC :)
very smart, listening to your body. I enjoy following your adventures
By the way, something that has worked well as a mosquito/gnat repellant for me has been tea tree oil. I've applied some on the visible parts of my skin when I'm out on those long summer evenings and the little bastards have stayed off. Certainly a much more organic and also just generally a much more pleasant way to fight the bugs than store-bought repellant. However, what I've come to notice is that tea tree oil only works against gnats on some people. I don't know if it has something to do with the person's blood type, the makeup of their sweat, or something completely different. Nevertheless, I suggest you try it out. Cheers and keep on hiking! :)
I will stay with the Erasmus program for a year at the University of Tartu, and I will
definitely go hiking in Estonia, although the landscape is quite different from
the high mountains I am used to in Southern Germany.
Great to hear! There is good access to many trails from Tartu to more South-Estonia with great landscape.
hello, i enjoy watching your adventures, a suggestions is to carry a small bottle/canteen/cup to gulp large amounts of water to avoid or help with the headaches just sipping water is not enough with high activity unless you hydrate a lot the day/night before.
That's a good point... Thank you!
I like how you are listening to your body. Wise decision!!
Just discovered your channel. Really appreciate your honesty about your experiences
Welcome! I'm happy you are getting something good out of the videos :)
Hiker in Estonia - You would love hiking in the Scottish hills.
A mosquito net is better than repellent. You don't have to refill it and it works against all flying things.
+Ichinin I agree! ButvI haven't found a lightweight and reasonably priced net yet. if you have any suggestions I would be all ears 😊
Hi. I got a head net, you just put it over your head and there is plenty of spac to have a hat or a baseballcap underneath.

It's about 85 krona (or roughly 8.5 Euro), i got mine for 49 krona in another place and next summer i'll be much happier doing bushcraft and hiking.
Hiker in Estonia .....www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwj5uuvuqbrQAhXtne0KHUa2BGUYABAE&ohost=www.google.co.uk&cid=CAESIeD2qos39YUNHVQvdrU7bnOGM83sTMyip8q9BlWAQTqaRw&sig=AOD64_2aNmY3HO-HOqbbEzSogVmbuyDvLg&ctype=5&q=&ved=0ahUKEwiLq-fuqbrQAhWCDcAKHZOqDhEQwg8IHg&adurl=
Smart to know your limit. :) I found your videos more inspiring and interesting than I thouught I would.. you really inspired me :)
Next time you get a heat/dehydration headache - try to drink something like ''resorb'' or other drink made to rehydrate you. Those have salts and minerals too to replace what you've lost by sweating and avoiding to water down your system with plain water.. a bit of sugar won't hurt in that situation either.
Now I'll look at more of your videos because I find them entertaining and inspiring :) Hi from Sweden!
Hi! :) Thanks for the recomendations.
Estonia looks quite nice - should go there one day
hello from South Carolina! totally understand the headache, I've had trouble with them all my adult life. Asprin with caffeine in it helps me the most but if I wait to long to take something it gets really bad! usually it happens when I haven't had enough sleep or to much strees? really enjoying watching your channel, thanks for sharing!
you know I am usually the guy that sits in his armchair seeing all the mistakes people make in these video's but with you, Estonian Hiker Girl, I agree with everything you have said and done. I am as surprised by this as you are. I subscribed, really looking forward to catching up with your adventures.
Thank you for the honour :)
i always carry emergency rehydration powder in the Medi' Kit,works 4 me
Estonia looks beautiful!
Not trying to push beyond your comfort zone is always wise. A time may come when comfort must be subordinated, but unless necessary; is is much better, and safer, to recognize and remain within your personal limitations... be well and stay safe.... Cheers.
You are so correct 😊
I understand about the migraines; they ease up as you get older...at least they did for me. I still get visual migraines, but the pain & throbbing are mostly gone. Migraines have had a decidedly negative effect on my life...all comes to a full stop. S**t happens. You did well.
Lol! I agree. Why drink "shitty coffee" when you can have the good stuff? Besides, good excuse for you with headache. Often helps my headaches or migraine.
a lot of physical activities on hot days can lead to dehydration make sure to drink a lot of water. drink even when your not thirsty.
I understand how debilitating a migraine can be, a friend of mine got them so bad it would lead to bouts of severe vomiting.
Im certain you know your body but it raised an eyebrow to see you drink coffee, a diuretic, for a cure🤔
In my military days out in the field, a headache was the first sign of dehydration and we had to chug a canteen of water or two to get everything stabilized.
Anyhow, thanks again for the great vid.
+Curtis Holt Caffeine helps expand the blood vessels and by this sometimes relieves the pain and if I'm lucky, it will gradually fade away (of course at the same time I drink a lot of water). But other times it's too late and it won't work.
Plenty of water rule one. Second... I have heard that Tiger balm. applied to your temples, in a very small amount helps migraines..
its not quitting if doing it for the right reasons. Estonia looks a nice place. thanks for showing it to us. from Uk
+waine dodd you're welcome to visit Estonia! I sure am hoping to visit UK some day to see the English countryside, it looks just gorgeous!
yes England has much beautiful countryside. you would like Wales & Scotland also. I was thinking about what you do and the basic equipment you use. was thinking id like to do same thing on a pushbike. to save on them plisters haha. be enjoyable and inexpensive weekends time outs & get aways. be sure to visit us
+waine dodd Oh it would be good to save some blisters with a pushbike, but I think with the bike you can't access some cool, remote and rugged places. So definately a good idea but at the same time don't throw away the idea of hiking by foot also :)
you could be right. much could get missed on a pushbike. plus its one extra thing to fail or get stolen. on the head pains you get from dehydration. have you looked in to making own isotonic drinks. you could take a made up bottle with you plus a small bottle of stronger mix to mix in with bottle of water you buy on route. water alone may not hydrate you quick enough. hence to headaches. think you just ad salt sugar lemon to water. good luck with that headaches suck.
thats a great idea. I am drinking a lot on the trail but maybe I need this isotonic drink to help with that.
Migraines are no joke. I understand what you deal with and I'm glad to see that you were safe out there and know your limits.
Early morning headaches are caused mostly by a change in atmospheric pressure.
You must have a very good camera....your videos are very clear and some beautiful pictures! Enjoy your commentary also! cheers!
Just to repeat what Rebecca said, very, very wise of you to know and understand your limitations, many people would have been to suborn to stop. If I may add, when a headache occurs in hot weather, just drinking water will not quite do the job. 250mls of water, pinch of salt and half teaspoon of sugar, if you can melt the sugar and salt 1st it would go down easier. I swear by it, and I have been to very hot countries to try it. Love the video`s.
+kevin smith Thank you for the tip! Others have suggested as well to try to add some minerals etc to my water so I will definatelly bring something with me the next time. You all are so considerate and helpful it warms my heart :)
You are more than welcome. Kev.
Love the videos....from Seattle Washington👋
I think the headaches may be from dehydration.
Great vlog from a beautiful lady👍🏻
Dehydration is definately a thing that can cause my headaches but as I know the risk I always drink a lot when on the road. That's why I'm always a bit worried because I do not know when the ache will hit me again... But thank you for the good thoughts and words, I will definatelly keep more close eye on my water consuption :)
I didn't see a quitter, I saw someone make a responsible choice. On the upside, if s**t didn't happen we would have no reference for the good things. Believe me....66 years of s**t happens makes me appreciate each good and beautiful thing so much more. Hope you will do some winter videos. I have no idea what winters are like in Estonia so it would be fun to see.
I have some winter videos already planned so stay tuned!
I look forward to all of them. Great work!
Don't drink coffee when you are thirsty - it is a diuretic. Always drink plenty of water before starting a hike to stay hydrated - drinking only when you are thirsty means you are already dehydrated. Wetting your hair and hat on a hot day can help to keep you cool as the water evaporates. A headache due to heat/hydration is quite debilitating and should be avoided. It always makes sense to check weather forecast before hiking - too much heat can as easily make it sensible to cancel a trip as too much wind or rain.
Bad luck, sensible recovery of the situation.
Hi Sweetheat, Migraines are supposedly caused by the liver, gall bladder and digestion cycle if it is on your right side I think. Search Dr Eric Berg on Utube it is explained there. Sugar and refined carbohydrates are a major factor. Of course dehydration can be a factor also when hiking. It is worth considering all possibilities, look and treat the cause and not the symptoms.
Happy hiking and safe adventures.
You don't lose when you fall; you only lose when you don't get back up again.
You can probably reduce your headache problem by drinking enough, and taking salt.
Good decision - so in hot days better to go near of lake,or swimming pool and enjoy a day with ice cream in a shadow.
See you in the next video you make great videos, thumbs up!!
Avon "Skin so soft" is a great mosquito repellent that doesn't smell or feel like a mosquito repellent.
What is the orange thing on your backpack strap? I'm so curious! Love your videos; you are awesome!
It's one if those emergency whistles that make really loud noise.
You are wonderful.
True words. Beautyfull video. Enjoy it.
@the 6 minute point.... WOW x Take me with you next time please :) x
You went through some serious pain. I felt bad for you.
I think you made the right decision. I wonder if you had heat exhaustion. . . . . and I would have made you coffee in the morning too! ; )
I use malay ointment if there's any mosquitoes. It repels and act as inflammatory healing. Those thighs are the result of many kms of walking definitely. so take good care of them
try to add a few lemon juice drops to your expresso… I t works nicely for me… Hey, and I subscribed!
I used to get migraines I found if I took a pain reliever as soon as I felt it coming on most times I could keep from getting it.
Come hiking in Washington State!!!
if your still getting a lot of headaches with activity ask your doctor to check your blood pressure,
Well done to know when enough is enough is enough to know😄 loving the vids. shame about the water butt in cemetery. Have you heard of Life straw or Soya filtration systems can drink any water sources through those. Boiling is good of course buying is easier 😁
+WackysWanderings I have done some research about the water filters but I really do not NEED one here in Estonia because the water is drinkable basically everywhere (when talking about wilderness). But I guess I will have to get one just in case of emergencies.
Looks a lovely country and the water in the lakes is so clear - unlike the water courses in my neck of the woods, hay ho :-(
recently 2 friends and I became dehydrated and almost died as one of the effects. You were wise to return
+pharraoh OMG, dehydtration is a serious problem! That's why I like to hike on a more cool weather and with sunny days even in Estonia I will become very careful.
If you ever want to vidit/backpack CA. your welcome to join me/us. cheers
Dioralyte might help you out its good for dehydration headaches
Good effort. Hiking is supposed to be fun as well so you made the right decision there. Just discovered your channel. Really great videos and cool little tips :) Never been to Estonia before but it looks nice. Are there any mountains?
I totally agree with you that hiking is supposed to be fun, not torture. Of course there will be harder days and thats the beauty in it - you challenge yourself. But at the same time I always remember that I'm doing this because I want to and because I want to enjoy the experience :)
I have found that the more hiking you do, the more enjoyable it becomes because you get fitter all the time. It's still challenging but less miserable and you can fully appreciate your surroundings. I also discovered the best socks which stop all blisters and this definitely helps with having a positive outlook out on the road.
I am away this weekend up into the Scottish highlands for a two day hiking/camping adventure in the mountains. It will be raining all weekend but i don't care haha!
Enjoy the next part of your journey :)
Thanks a lot for the encouraging words, it means a lot to me. Good luck in Scotland! This is definatelly a place in my hiking bucket list :)
The sky will tell you the weather, When it is red in the morning, That is a Shepard warning, When red at nighte, A shepherds delight. Over.
I write in Spanish. Eres una chica muy simpática y divertida, me gusta tu canal.... mucho sol + poca agua = dolor de cabeza, un buen gorro y agua está bien, besos y keep rocking.
I subscribe! ☺ just awesome vid. 👍 tks for sharing.
Well done girl...........as a fellow lifelong migraine sufferer I think you made the right decision
Do you have Sumatriptan in Estonia ?
I do not know about that, but I have now a different kind of medicine my doctor prescribed so hopefully I will not have many these situations anymore :)
I hope so 😊👍
Great Video.
Trying to "optimize" water in 30 degree heat is dangerous. I didn't think Estonia got so hot. I won't try to diagnose you, but perhaps your headache was due more to dehydration than migraine? I became dehydrated on a cycle tour in 35 degree heat (in Australia) and had symptoms similar to yours and I NEVER get migraines (hangovers occasionally). I think you may need to increase your water intake when hiking.
You get a headache because of lack of water a day before the hike you should drink plenty of water and hydrate yourself
it's no failure to turn back and live to fight another day
