What a fascinating chat, I could listen to John all day, as an officer that joined the cops in 1976 nothing he says surprises me. He obviously was on the ball, and had his wits about him. It was a very strange era, fortunately the good guys out numbered the bent people that had ingrained themselves in these organisations.

Incredible man and a brave man doing what he did putting his life on the line because of the strong feelings he had of doing the job right and a humanitarian way to prevent more risk than there already was being a prison officer,I really don't think a man such as him exists in any roll now and it's a real good thing Sam having him talking to you as he did, well done my mate, another real good interview 👍

I know Sam your focus is on prison life I 100% understand and I can't wait for your new book, audiobooks are the way for me! If you think at the end of 60s you have the explosion of the Troubles in Ulster probably another reason why John's wife didn't want him to carry on in army life. Have you thought about interviewing ex soldiers about their experience in NI and prison staff about the IRA hunger strikes in the 70s and 80s?

My father was a CID Police Inspector and he was a disciplinarian so to get myself made a Ward of Court was to invite his wrath, but I was soon off on the train to my military training. I was working in the cotton mills in 1965/68 and ended up doing what they termed Continental Shifts that is 9pm to 7am and it was long hours and nights. I was earning around £23 a week and had to hand my unopened wage packets to my parents who handed me back £1.10s spending mioney (this was all pre-decimal). So I did not even get 10% of my wages, had virtually no money and was knackered from the long shifts on nights. I had to escape and my parents refused to sign my Army papers so I went before a Magistrate and became a Ward of Court.

Hi Sam, that was interesting. John reminded me of my oldest friend, who past several years ago well before his time. I have to commend his approach to the job, seeing folk and situations for what they were, rather than the BS they were wrapped up in. In Japan they have a saying..."The nail that stands up, will be knocked back down." John was, maybe still is, a standing nail, and as such he no doubt continues to attract those who would knock him down. I could relate to much of what he said, the creepy vicar, the S.O. with the dirty little secret. Strangeways 'social club' within the walls that lead to screws being pissed in the afternoon, returning to work feeling braver than they had a right to be. Looking forward to the next instalment. Glad to see you looking so chilled out and relaxed....warmest thoughts as always to Amy and your daughter.
