Smokey is spot on, the song is more about a guy stalking a woman, possibly an ex-girlfriend or ex-wife. Now the thing that you brought up about Charles Manson wasn't the fact that he was obsessed with Sharon Tate. To sum it up, Charles had befriended one of the Beach Boys and tried to convince him to let them record one of his songs that he wrote. And they did, but Manson wasn't happy because they changed a lot of the lyrics and I believe even the song title. So the Beach Boys member Charles befriended moved out, but he didn't know that he moved. So Sharon Tate and Roman Polansky moved into this house. Roman was overseas filming a movie, but Sharon and some of her friends were at the house, when the Manson family attacked. Sharon and her friends were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Sting is on record saying this is about a stalker and feeling really weird when couples come up to him saying they got married to this song.
Actually it's about Sting. Being jealous and trying to control his then wife.
Came here to say this. ❤
😂
@@herrglad9726he ALSO did state in an interview that yes it did creep him out when people use it for their wedding song. I heard that as well
That's the thing, it doesn't matter what it was about. Music can be interpreted by people in different ways.
This song is in a pantheon of incredibly misunderstood lyrics. "The One I Love" by R.E.M. is more of a dagger in the back saying "good riddance" to someone, and people saw it as a love song. "Born in the U.S.A." is treated like a patriotic song by some while the lyrics are about a guy forced into fighting in Vietnam, then faces the struggles of many Vietnam vets finding work or a life when returning home.
Sharon Tate, Smokey, damn! She was married to Roman Polanski. The Manson family went to the house because the record producer Terry Melcher lived there.
They should have done a second version called It Puts the Lotion on its Skin, because that's what those lyrics sound like.
The Police were beyond talented.
There’s a band called The Greenskeepers who literally have a song called Lotion about that movie 😆 The video is here on RUclips
Couple it with Don't stand too close to me, and you've got some real predator vibes going on :)
@@ShanLH5 I'm headed there now LOL
@@Nessa_the_Embroidery_Nerd nice! That’s some funny sh!t lol
@ShanLH5 OMG I didn't expect it to be this upbeat. I can't wait to play this at work. Bless you.
He wrote , If you love somebody set them free, of The Dream of the Blue Turtles album as an antidote to this song well worth a listen and in fact the whole album...
As a matter of fact, it was drummer Stewart Copeland who first asked his friend, Andy Summers, to form a band together. They next agreed to approach Gordon and lure him away from his current gig, which they did. Et voila, the Police were formed.
You’re absolutely right dawg, this was thought of as a love song when it came out. It was only some years later people actually went “wait, what”. I still to this day don’t know what Sting’s intentions were
1:50 The knight is the horse head piece. The bishop is the one topped with a notched bulb.
14:15 OK I'll give you some leeway. Now contextualize the lines
"Since you've gone, I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't I can't replace
I keep crying 'Baby, baby please'"
Also gotta get to Walking on the Moon, Roxanne, and one of my favorites, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic
More Police: Roxanne, Message in a bottle, Walking on the moon, Sting solo: Englishman in NY (also a Ren version) , Russians (sadly very current right now).
I would love to see Sting & Ren collaborate these days!! Early Police is fire!! “The Beds Too Big Without You”, “Bring On The Night”, “ I Can’t Stand Losing”, “Walking On The Moon “…etc. Their Reggae vibes were innovative.
I've been saying that for awhile. Keep waiting atleast for Ren to do a Police cover!!
@@randywissler9923 Ren did a Police cover, “Walking On The Moon”, “Message In A Bottle”, with The Big Push Band & a Sting cover, “English Man In New York”…
@@rudyb. I don't know how I missed that. Thank you for letting me know!!
Peter Gabriel was the first Genesis singer, then Phil Collins replaced him.
I had posters of them plastered all over my wall as a teenager!! Saw them in concert about a handful of times. Beds to Big without You, So lonely, and Message in a Bottle are a few of my favs you should check out!! ❤️❤️
Me, too! Posters!
Next album was the song “If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free” as a response to this song. Great song too
The horse is the knight
The best part about music, or art in general is personal interpretation. It's equally important what the artist intended as it is what the observer interprets.
Sting wrote this song after his soon to be ex-wife left him. He was in a dark place when he wrote this one.
The song was always about stalking a woman.
His relationship had recently ended and although he didn't stalk her he was in a dark mood when he wrote it.
The trouble is people tend to not listen to the lyrics just parts of them and the melody.
I knew it wasn't a love song the first time I heard it.
*Sting said in an interview that he's confused by how many ppl think this is a positive love song. He's said it's about the obsession with a lost lover and the jealousy that follows. That's pretty clear to many. But just as many found this song sweet and loving. This song has always been creepy to me and I'm sure it's #1 on every stalkers playlist. But I think the reason it's so creepy is because of all the ppl who are like "oh this song is so pretty. That's true love." Uhm, HUH? Please. Don't. Love. Me. Ever.* 😳😕😟
I've had the same experience with people fawning over REM's The One I Love. I'm like "Really? Are you hearing the same song I am?"
@@mikethemotormouth fun fact: The band made up the lyrics for "The One I Love" while they were on a tour.
That is fine because people are sick of dispassionate modern relationship model moralists lead by women's politics with their dull sense of the possibilities for sexual relationship and even duller personalities as man and woman, much like how women's lib does nothing for men's puberty raw sexual identity and then places all the narrative blame on them as it being just their "insecurity" while trying the groom their sex into a non manifest destiny instinct sexual sex. Women lib just grooms all the qualities of boy/male sexuality out leaving them a sexually pathetic androgynous nothing sex ready to follow women's orders as far as behavior. I can't control what "Creeps" you out, but maybe it isn't the fault of those that share the same sense of what is passionate and maybe it is on you to Consent to more things in order to feel empowered by them like those others who are different than you do. Maybe power imbalance is maintained more by your own stubborn feelings that find too many things creepy and is unwilling to consent to them and so claim no small measure of participatory power and control? Modern women will (not consent) themselves all day long out of all types of passionate relationships/fantasy possibilities because they have an intellectually dull fear driven victims mentality rather than a mentality of guts to consent, claim empowerment from that consent, and so realize new revelations of the forms that passion between man and woman can take through participation. Why is it you suck at consent and participation if your spirit is so "empowered", because it sounds like that is just a image sales job that Women's lib sells about females while actually selling narratives about their victimhood in countless situations where their consent would have turned them from an in opposition to what they feel is "creepy" victim claimant into a participatory equal active agent instead.
Art can be subjective....If you hear it as you are doing all these things (good and bad) and "I'll be watching you" means I'm not FOLLOWING you everywhere, but I'm keeping tabs on you because I will always love you. I'm waiting for you to stop messing up your life, stop running around, and settle down.
@theendistheend123 because "CAN'T YOU SEE/ YOU BELONG TO ME"
The definition of possessive does not make for a healthy relationship.
For a guy that was born in the 60’s and was a young man at the 80’s, this was and still is a great love song! Loved it then and still love it now! ✌️
I was an 80's baby in the U.K. You're playing my music. ❤
Ahhh...the stalker song! I love the Police, I grew up as a teenager in the eighties. Graduation was 83' this song was everywhere! It didn't seem like a Stalker song then...but a few years pass by, and I get the stalker song! Lol😂
Satan “I don’t want to do it if Diddy did it”,
“God dammit what didn’t Diddy do?”,
“How about a Farrari cake?”
“Diddy Didn’t do it”
Every time I hear P.Diddy’s name can’t help but think of Satan from South Park.
Back in the day, it was called unrequited love - now, it's stalking! Apparently Sting is quite surprised as a lot of people see it as a love song, but he has said it's about a stalker.
Love can be unrequited without being stalking. Unrequited just means the feeling weren't returned. Stalking has a physical aspect to it.
Stalking already wasn't cool in the early '80's, but neither was child abuse/endangerment (listen to their song "Don't Stand So Close to Me"). But either topic was fair game for an artist to tackle.
Hollywood was thinking of Jody Foster, by the way. Her worst stalker attempted to assassinate President Regan.
And, no, the song had nothing to do with religion or God. It was a look into the mind of a stalker (or, perhaps, the thoughts generated in the wake of a break-up that can lead to stalking).
Next:
"Don't Stand So Close to Me" (of course!).
"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" is also a great tune that can be seen as the counterpart to "Every Breath You Take" (as it covers the infatuation stage, told from the perspective of someone who sounds a little too intense for most tastes... e.g. check out this lyric from the song: "I resolve to call her up 1000 times a day, and ask her if she'll marry me in some old-fashioned way...").
Back in the day we understood the difference between stalking and being obsessed with someone. Obsession with someone, besides being a gateway to stalking, is also a gateway to loving someone. Back in the day, stalking was associated with people who want to hurt the object of their obsession. I have heard many a couple talk about how the guy wore the girld down to get a date and now they are married. Like you said, it has a romantic conotation. I feel that in the current times, stalking has been misused by people who don't want the attention and thus the behavior of adoring someone has been demonized.
You have done two tracks that I can see. I would love your take on one of their earlier tracks like So Lonely, Walking on the Moon, Cant stand losing you, or Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.
Every breath you take is a stalker song :D
Hahahaha the cart thing was funny in the intro!
FYI the songs about a stalker it’s not a love song like everyone thinks it is
Roxanne is probably my favorite hit of theirs...Also the oldest. You guys need to react to that one!
This is THE Classic Stalker song!!! It's about being obsessed with someone!!!🎵🎼🎶🥁🎸🎹🔥🤘 Charles Manson had Sharon Tate murdered....that was August of 1969. Scared the crap out of all of us in L.A. until they were caught!!!
You’d have to be damn talented to be a member of The Police! ❤
Some would say that the guitar riff makes the whole song.
So, Sting wrote this song and went to the guitarist (Andy Summer) to make a guitar part for it. This is what he came up with.
However, because Sting wrote the song, he gets all the royalties. Andy gets nothing.
The most played song in the history of radio. (The majority of people can see past the lyrics and appreciate the song as a work of genius)
The perfect stalker song. So many peeps think it's a love song and I'm like...noooo...can you say obsessed and scary?
Back When Then Song Came Out Never Thought To Much About The Lyrics. But in Today's Time it Gave Me Stalker Vibes
One of the numerous songs about stalkers from the '80s/'90s. And one of the most misinterpreted songs too. So many people think it's a love song lol 🫠😅🤘🏼
Ah the OG Stalker Song. Really LISTEN to these words.
So, at my work, we created a Stalker song playlist for obviously creepy stalker love songs. This is on there, and Bruce Springsteen song "I'm on fire ". Back in the day there was a lot of stalker/obsessive probably would go to jail if it were today songs. But back then, it was just love. There's more songs than you think😅
You gotta remember that a song doesn't have to be from the singer's perspective. The singer can just be the storyteller...sharing the perspective of a jealous ex-lover. Also, Sting considers himself a recovering Catholic. This is not a religious song.
It's a revenge song
Stalker edition
Thank you guys
You should do Desert Rose by Sting for a different sound. It's gorgeous!
His best solo song, in my opinion.
On the Police first tour we saw them in a (Rathskeller) club for 3$ a friend of mine was a happy idiot and tried to pick up Sting using a fake English accent, it was hysterically funny as he shot her down . Great memories
Great reaction gents!! Believe it or not Hollywood, I have heard of some churches that have 'modified' the lyrics of this song and precisely put it as God is the singer! And it does work.
I've pretty much always seen this as a 'stalker' or 'guy that couldn't let it go' type of song. Having said that, I've always loved this song - regardless of the subject matter!
Need some more Police! King Of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Roxanne, Synchronicity II...so many GREAT tracks to check! Cheers.
I studied Law and this song was called The Stalker song.
Funny story: the Rolling Stones were doing a show and were told the Police were coming. They had flushed their drugs before discovering it was the BAND, not the cops.
This song is about a stalker, make no mistake. It was also the number one wedding song of it's year. Haha.
Way back in the day on All My Children, one of the ladies was being stalked by some creepy dude. Every time the camera cut to him hiding and staring at her with his big crazy eyes, this song would be playing. Yes, it’s a good song, but I always remember that and think stalker.
The stalker song😊
In response to people thinking this was a love song, we got ‘set them free’
i heard it was about surveillance cameras everywhere. thought i read that somewhere. but i’m old. 😂
It wasn't Charles Manson who was obsessed with the actress "Jodie" Foster. It was John Hinckley, who in March of 1981 shot President Ronald Reagan, James Brady (Press Secretary), Thomas McCarthy (Secret Service), and Thomas Delahanty (DC Police).
More importantly Stewart Copeland is from the police gotta check out oysterhead.. Copeland, claypool and trey.. basically a super group
This always gave me stalker vibes!✌️😆
Welcome to one of the deepest catalogs you'll find. Subversive as all get out and funky. Enjoy the dive! (My personal favorite is "Synchronicity II," which is a banger.)
I was told it’s about his kid that grew up and moved out and he’s being a protective father
When this song came out everyone I know knew it was a song about stalking and did not think it was romantic. There were people who thought it was a love song and got married to it which I always thought was weird.
It's so remarkable to me how many people think this is you know their song and they've had it plays at their wedding or other type of romantic events and it's such a dark and twisted take on obsessive love that if people paid attention they would not want this to be there in versuri song...
Back in those days (when I was young) there was not so much fear of being cancelled. It was ok to write songs about negative feelings. Just because you express feelings, it does not mean you are romanticising then.
The story I've always heard damn near since the song came out, and I remember when it did, is that it's from the perspective of a female stalker.
I remember when this song first came out. As kids, my friends and I were very aware of what this song was about. We used to call it “The Stalking Song”. We never understood why others thought it was somehow romantic.
I always thought the lyrics were about stalking. 😮
Gee, what a sweet-sounding stalker song. Great melody and dark, dark lyrics of a forlorn, frustrated and somewhat subtly angry and potentially vengeful lovesick person.
An interesting facet of this song that I figured out and connected years ago but no one seems to have noticed, at least in anything I've ever read of this song, is that the lyrics, in part, and the vibe in general is lifted, either purposely or subconsciously by Sting from the Led Zeppelin song of 10 years earlier - D'yer Mak'er. Look at the Zeppelin lyrics and tone and it matches it, in a reverse perspective - '...Every breath I take, oh oh oh oh, Oh, every move I make...' I've always been surprised that Sting was not brought to task by Zeppelin members for the former's essentially copying of the lyrics and tone in certain sections. Listen to the yearning/pleading of Robert Plant and the words in D'Yer Mak'er and then compare them to Every Breath You Take.
Oh, and D'yer Mak'er just happens to be the only Zeppelin song (that I'm aware of) in their catalogue that has an obvious reggae beat, the calling card of The Police. Hmmmmm. Curious.
the most played song in the history of radio
#1 Billboard song for 1983
This song although I appreciate it always creeped me out. As a young woman in the 80s I had a couple of stalkers over the years. This was the first time anyone ever acknowledged they existed ☮️
Sicksense- Feed Them To The Wolves, please and thank you
Please do "In the Shadow of the Abattoir" by Trivium.
Sharon Tate Story Quentin Had It Play Out Differently In “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” !!
Lol, Horse aka Knight
The stalkers anthem. Really creepy song but musically, it sounds good.
I could never like this song knowing that Sting dumped his first wife for her best friend. It didn't make sense to me that he'd be obsessed with her, but maybe she felt this way about him. Either way, too stalker-y, never romantic either now or back then.
Love this song to death but my little sister used to play this when she and her friend would drive by her crushes house in High School! lol
Nasty to put those creepy Lyrics in such calm nice music
The song actually is about stalking
It’s about Sting’s ex-wife stalking him, I believe.
Yo Drab Majesty:39 By Design
The queen can also move diagonally.
This song hits ENTIRELY different when your ex sends it to you. It sounds all cool in the song. BUT…Get rid of the music…put ONLY the lyrics on paper. .Now read them. It’s no longer a cool song, its straight up foreshadowing to an inevitable ugly confrontation. Now go get a restraining order and a concealed carry permit. I graduated in 92-GEN X .
Stalking was anything but romantic. Love your take on it though! You guys are my favorite reactors! You’re both adorable. You give ALL genres a fair chance. The joy music from my generation brings to you makes me smile. (Especially Mike Patton & FNM 😉) Thank you, both!!!
Manson family killed tate by accident he was thinking it was the home to the manager of the beach boys that told him he was going to make Mason a music star cause the one beach boy member hyped Mason up and when he didnt mason wanted to kill him so he sent his family to the last address of the manager which was tate's house which he sold to her months before
Stalker's anthem.
He’s talking about John Hinckley being obsessed with Jodie Foster and shot Reagan to impress her.
Stalking…. Needs to be “Arrested” ☠️☠️☠️☠️
(Sharon Tate)
Waiting for you guys to listen to “The Warning”…3 sisters from Mexico …the song “choke”..official music video
Although this is 💯 no doubt a stalker tune.... looking at it from Hollywood's view.... the Bible tells us that God will never forsake or leave us but we're the ones who turn away from Him so, I could definitely see that assumption being possible
This is the most frightening stalker song ever written lol Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski
Love this stalker song!!!
😬😁
Stalker!!!
Yes, there is a knight in chess. Some newbs call it the horse.
dude says there is no knight in chess
Yeah, the Police were good at making songs that made a statement about romanticizing really bad behavior.
The Stalker Song.
Morning fellas! Good song, but i think its about an ex stalking his ex...?
Try Buckethead - Soothsayer
Sting IS the bass player!
He wrote this about his ex wife.
STRANGER DANGER!!!!!!!!😂😂😂
I always do a silly spin on this song at the "you belong to me" lyric and swap me for Puppy. Kinda takes the creep factor out to make the creature following your pet because mine follow me everywhere they can. 😂 Plus they are usually silently watching you interact with things wherever you take them. Ok I'll stop.😅
There is a Knight in chess.
It WAS romanticized back then. I remember. I don’t think Manson knew that she lived in the house that they hit.
