I find myself happier when I’m off social media. Like you said, it makes me compare my life to others’ and not feeling grateful for what I’ve achieved with my own effort. I install and uninstall them often and that feeling of relief when I’m off them is priceless
4 years ago I did an experiment where I dropped off of social media to see how long it would take for a friend or follower to notice I was missing. It was a full 2 weeks before I got a "hey, I noticed..." text. That moment was extremely eye-opening to me. I realized how much room I had made for people who made no room for me.
Nicholas, One of first question that came to mind is; Why I became a minimalist and honestly never really asked myself that question. But reflecting back on my life it just feels so damn good and peaceful. It's beyond words almost having a simple, decluttered life. I find myself more at peace, creating continued positive energies, etc... I'm not one whom finds social media of much use. I rarely watch news nor TV. I seek out documentaries and you tube documentaries such as yours. Living with less all around is more. And folks remember; novelties wear out quickly. Find happiness in sustainabilty, e.g., working out and improving your health, mind and body. Paint with fresh new colors throughout your home and live outdoors with nature, beach, forests, etc... We are our own architect.
This is such an inspiring video. I’m incredibly impressed with just how great your videos are getting over time. The detail, writing and editing is absolute gold! Thanks for the motivation man!
great word choice - intentional! we all need to be more intentional about how we spend our time, money, how we invest in things and people. etc. kudos!
I own a laptop and a flip phone. I am not distracted when I'm out and about since my phone has never had anything interesting on it so it's to call and text plus receive. I do not have social media. I am trying to be in the "moment" more.
I'm 40 years old got my first cell phone at 24, first smart phone at 31. Never got into social media except RUclips. Sometimes I wish I never got a phone life was much better. Now I feel like it's a must. I do feel anxious not having it on me because I have kids and worry I'll miss a call from them. I do need to limit myself from RUclips. The time just passes by so quickly.
Hey Nicholas! I have the same issue, I don't realize I'm not practising what I preach till I'm exhausted of whatever it is I'm obsessed with! Great tips! I gotta get outside more myself lol
I love your videos. I had never heard of 'minimalism' till last weekend, and suddenly so much about myself and how I live for years has made sense. So much of what you say, is how I have lived for years and its funny to heat of others.
You are truly one of my favorite content creators. I'm an introvert and love your laid back low key style and that you get right to the point. Watching one of your videos is kinda like spending some time listening to a good friend while having a cup of coffee. Thankful for you and the work you do.
I agree a lot with getting rid of social media altogether. I slowly got rid of all of mine & have never felt better. The hardest was Instagram. I just downloaded every photo that meant something to me & finally said goodbye. Zero regrets.
@@NicholasGarofola it’s also really nice when people ask for my social & I can say that I don’t have any. I find the connections I have are a lot more meaningful now, not forced.
i don't own a television. if i want passive entertainment i have to decide (independently from streaming/broadcasting services) & source the media on my laptop. this is often youtube or my favorite DVDs, yet it results in less screen time than a tv & more intention with what i'm consuming.
I am so sad but at the same time so happy that you chose to take a break from IG. I’m struggling with the same thing as well . Over the years I have realized that I do not have friends on there but only acquaintances. The constant comparison is literally inevitable at this point and although it’s very obvious that I am more productive when I do not use IG , I keep on coming back to it because it’s indeed so easy and accessible. I am planning on spending more time outside because it is something that I never or rarely regret doing each time that I do. I just tend to get anxious you know with the way this world is going on but anyway , I apologize for the rent but I just wanted you to know that you and your content are very relatable so no need to feel like they’re something wrong with you . Thank you for being who you are and stay blessed and safe 🤗🤎🤗
I don’t know if anyone has experienced this, but I notice tangible relief simply by turning off my phone. It’s like a level mental static just goes away. This is beautiful content. Thank you.
I deactivated FB since Feb 2022 and also started going off a few mos too in 2021. I also deact IG since May 2022. As a result, anxieties dropped tremendously. I no longer have FOMO and now feel so much joy in missing out. Never have I ever been this much intentional in living. and valuing only things that truly matter. I have always looked out for CK Space and Gabe Bult here in YT and I am very happy my algorithm landed me on your channel. Keep it up! I just wanted to validate your disclaimer too that I’ve got so much value out of what you share here so thank you so so much and know you’re appreciated.
Honestly the instagram part really hit home for me. About a year ago I finally had the courage to delete the app, because I spent hours at a time scrolling through my feed. It was actually even an OCD kind of thing for me, where I couldn't close the app before I came to the end of my feed and had seen everything, because of this fear of missing out. And since over the years instagram has designed their feed so that you spend as much time as possible scrolling through it, it progressively got worse for me. I still have my account and I'll occasionally log into the web version to see what's going on with more distant friends but I can almost immediately feel a wave of discomfort if I stay on there too long. I truly believe social media can make you sick, especially if you're a more sensitive person. It sure does me no favors psychologically.
Thanks for this video, Nicholas! How do I introduce minimalism to my family? I am a Filipino and we believe in extended family ties lol and we live in a small house (in the Philippines) and my people don't want to let go of too many of their things because of sentimental value. The things make a lot of visual clutter. Thanks again!
“We are living in a time where everything feels really connected, and busy, and very loud.” Wow. I was just telling a buddy a few days ago that we live very noisy lives. They just didn’t see it. You do. Subscribed!
The irony with videos like this is that, social media kind of leads you into these rabbit holes. So without it, I wouldn’t be aware of this video or about this guy.
"The bearded douchebag in the sweater," hahaha, classic. Great content, watched the entire video, a lot of good points. Turn down the noise for sure is what we all need more of. Ever think of gardening? On year four now and definitely helps the connectedness with nature and also turn the noise down, love it. Keep up the great work!
I'm 20 years old and I don't use social media I never was a fan of social media , but I did have Instagram for 1 month or so ( actually I never really used ) when I was 16 but I realized very quickly that it isn't for me. Now I don't even think about having social media, It doesn't really add any value to my life
I just deleted my Instagram 3 days ago and my Facebook for 1 year. Feels so great!!!! Just taking a break that I needed ..I live in Hawaii so I shouldn't complain that I have nothing to do 😂
Great insight! I've been feeling quite unhappy these days no matter how many milestones I hit or material possessions I get. They just don't make sense anymore! Your words hit so well and I do hope I can practice more gratitude every single day. 🙏
When I had Covid, I had no energy…even to look at my phone. I would stare out our big windows and see the sky, trees, my little garden, and birds. Just staring at them and interacting with my family made those days bearable. I learned that sometimes when you have limitations, that’s when you can take a pause and actually appreciate what is around you.
Thank you my dear, I needed to hear this and not feel alone on this journey. One of the aspects that I can relate the most is when I stopped listening to music or doing the things that I like. I just couldn't feel any connection with the songs, it was depressing because I love to sing my lungs out, and not even that I could do to feel better... Also I live on an island that for my luck and huge blessing has a rainforest. I remember the days I would car-camp by the beach to catch the sunrise and head to the rainforest 30 minutes away for a slow hike; I also included ether my dog or my cat on these random weekend trips. I had stopped doing fun and motivating things, without a reason; at least a reason that I could pin point. I share this just in case someone can relate. If you feel depressed to the point that you can't even cry, just give yourself time, reach for professional help if you need it, LET YOUR FAMILY LOVE YOU (don't become a hermit), and be kind with yourself (very very kind and loving, please). If the house is messy for a week or two, don't believe the voice in your head that says that you're a failure (YOU ARE NOT) , just do little tasks here and there and as soon as you see little improvements you will get motivated to get it all together. DECLUTTER, that has been my lifesaver. Discarding things honestly helped me lift up some weight off and my unnecessary responsibility to stuff. I send you all a warm hug and best wishes for your journey!! Much Love!!! ^-^

The bearded douchebag in the sweater has uploaded! All jokes aside I really do love these videos as it helps me through times like these in which life just seems so boring, and not interesting. I do think it is time to start really trying to limit my time spent on electronics, and just go outside and touch grass. Thanks for the video
Your videos always make me smile! 1. They give me that Dakota Johnson type of chill energy I like. 2. Your thought are always so to the point without a lot of extra fluff. What you say in your videos usually make a lot of sense to me and hit cry close to home. Long story short (too late) Thanks for making chill, relaxed content that doesn't spike my anxiety any further:)

Just found your Channel and it’s perfect timing. Message is just as helpful at age 62 restless and bored when I take a vacation and struggling to unplug staycations are hard but I’m learning to catch myself.
I think a smart watch is a good idea, so any calls, messages or texts can pop up and get responded to if needed, but the screen being small makes social media either impossible or less tempting to check on. I have notifications turned off on social media as well, so that helps.
I really enjoy your content. Although I don’t always agree on everything and have my own opinion on some of what you say, the way you put your perspective across is really refreshing. It’s really great content. Thank you and I wish you well on your minimalist journey. It’s a great path and I love it.
There's so much to unpack here lol..I got so much value out of this video. I have had the worst decision fatigue lately with food, and finding something to do and I didn't realize that it was from overindulging in these areas of my life. Lol to the subscribe button and I have never seen anyone wear their airpods the way you do... I noticed it in your last video and I tried to wear mine that way and they literally don't fit in my ear like that so I am baffled 😂 but I digress... This was one of my favorite videos so far. Great message!
Great video Nick! Right on point. I do most of these... no social media, practice gratefulness and don't feel the need to have my phone ALL the time. I would love your input on mindfulness. That is something i struggle with. Simply being in the moment in order to not miss out on what life actually is... the NOW.
So glad I found your channel! I feel like we have same values and I like watching your videos. I like the aspect of sharing experience. From my experience it’s difficult to practice what you preach, and it’s ok to slip into old habits. But what I always appreciate about people is their direction and that they don’t give up on living the way they want. I would love to see more videos just about your experience, your ups and down, maybe something like a vlog style (liked the shot in the car, a change of scenery), how your lifestyle changes the way you do everyday tasks. If vlogs are not your style, that’s ok, keep on doing things the way you see and I’ll be watching!
In social Media many Person just Show positive things like success, marriage, job , career, beauty, houses or cars they buy. That makes a little bit sad because you say to yourself. I have not all of that.
All I can say is "AMEN BROTHER!" At first, minimalism can be difficult when I am throwing out/giving away "things" that in my head have meaning that I have attached to. I'm so grateful that this morning, your video popped up on my feed to remind me to keep going!
hola :) maybe the social media it's not about what you can get, maybe it's about what you can offer. You can use it to create a community. PS I recomend you the book of Joshua Becker, Things that matter
Love your content. Gives me a lot of peace of mind. I am going through a similar journey and you inspire me. Thank you. Let me know if I can pay you back in any way.
Uninstall the social media apps from the phone. If you really want to check the account inconvenience yourself by checking from your laptop or desktop.
I appreciate how you articulate this topic, on living simply. I’m glad you focus on the specific details of choices we can make and healthier patterns we can maintain. I am having trouble balancing reducing social media interaction, but I do find that RUclips creates a more specific boundary that I enjoy. I interact a lot on Facebook less so on Instagram but I agree with yes I might look like the constant unnecessary interaction online. I like how you bring out the virtue of going outside. I do the same thing, but I’d like to get more than 20 minutes closer to 30 or more like you.
(1) Outside (2)Reduce social media (3)Ditch phone (4)Save money (5)Gratitude So he's saying that do all of this I will live a simple life? Okay I will follow this rule until I die
Really like this video...in fact, whilst making dinner (something I enjoy) I've been watching a few of your videos. So thanks 🙂 One question I have though re: social media....I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to get rid of Social Media, but I find that some businesses I use ONLY advertise / communicate on Social Media so I always find myself drawn back to them . How do you deal with this?
This pisses me off because I do these things and it I'm still very unhappy especially when it comes to being outside in the freezing sold because I HATE THE COLD!!! Dong these things really doesn't make me happy at all
I think more than 1 person got something out of this my friend. Thank you and I hope you keep going. You're helping a lot of people with this struggle.
This video and replies are BS. “Quit social media” is nothing. Millennials no nothing about real depression, anxiety, or loneliness. Pathetic. You are doing more damage than good.
@@NicholasGarofola it makes me smile more when I see you smile now, because I think I wonder if he's thinking about TimelordUK right now. I love your videos. You are a cool guy. It's mostly girls who do minimalism videos, so refreshing to see another guy

The more I stopped using social media the more repulsive it became and easier it was to stay offline. It started as a discipline challenge and now I barely log on.

Check out ninerlives, he has 2 cats and a lovely community. I lost my tuxie darling 15 months ago, and i am telling you, that channel plus a couple of others eased the pain for me. I understand how it hurts, it still does, but it becomes less raw after a time.
Just discovered your channel as I think more about living intentionally myself, for me one of the reasons to live a simple lifestyle is to be able to travel more. Love hearing from others what’s helped them and the chill delivery is a great change of pace from a lot of creators.
I don't do social media at all. Unless RUclips counts? I do spend a lot of time on it. It's winter here, and i find it hard to want to go outside, too cold. I want to live intentionally, but have yet to really work out what i intend...
You should start podcast at some point... I will definitely be your daily listener. It definitely helps me calm down to see someone looks at life the way I do.

I think a smart watch is a good idea, so any calls, messages or texts can pop up and get responded to if needed, but the screen being small makes social media either impossible or less tempting to check on. I have notifications turned off on social media as well, so that helps.
Although I’m not a fan of smart watches I can see the logic behind this 😄
I really enjoy your content. Although I don’t always agree on everything and have my own opinion on some of what you say, the way you put your perspective across is really refreshing. It’s really great content. Thank you and I wish you well on your minimalist journey. It’s a great path and I love it.
You have became my role model
Thank you 😊
Having happiness as an internal instead of external focus is awesome!
I’ve actually been told that I wear them weird but oh well 💁🏻 thank you as always Gabriella
Who wants to be like everyone else anyways 😉
This video is what I need right now! Thanks Nic! ☺️
Thank you Mark!
Great video Nick! Right on point. I do most of these... no social media, practice gratefulness and don't feel the need to have my phone ALL the time. I would love your input on mindfulness. That is something i struggle with. Simply being in the moment in order to not miss out on what life actually is... the NOW.
Thanks Maria!
I appreciate that! I'll be experimenting with vlogs at some point down the road
In social Media many Person just Show positive things like success, marriage, job , career, beauty, houses or cars they buy. That makes a little bit sad because you say to yourself. I have not all of that.
Just discovered your channel, subscribed :)
🙌🏻
I also have deleted my Instagram. It have helped with anxiety. Thank you for the video dude
You got it 😄
All I can say is "AMEN BROTHER!" At first, minimalism can be difficult when I am throwing out/giving away "things" that in my head have meaning that I have attached to. I'm so grateful that this morning, your video popped up on my feed to remind me to keep going!
hola :) maybe the social media it's not about what you can get, maybe it's about what you can offer. You can use it to create a community.
PS I recomend you the book of Joshua Becker, Things that matter
I’m a huge fan of his 😄
Love your content. Gives me a lot of peace of mind. I am going through a similar journey and you inspire me. Thank you. Let me know if I can pay you back in any way.
Your kind words are appreciated 😊
Stay off social media and phone make me feel more connect with me. Thanks for sharing.
One thing you can do is keep your cards separate from your phone. That way you can get in the car and go to the store without a phone.
Good idea!
@@NicholasGarofola thank you for the great video!
The production quality of this video, just amazing.
Thanks so much 😄
Uninstall the social media apps from the phone.
I would love to go outside more but being friendless and loveless I look so cringe and pathetic. Better sleep forever.
(1) Outside
(2)Reduce social media
(3)Ditch phone
(4)Save money
(5)Gratitude
So he's saying that do all of this I will live a simple life?
Okay I will follow this rule until I die
Really like this video...in fact, whilst making dinner (something I enjoy) I've been watching a few of your videos. So thanks 🙂
One question I have though re: social media....I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to get rid of Social Media, but I find that some businesses I use ONLY advertise / communicate on Social Media so I always find myself drawn back to them .
I appreciate that!
next apple product update?
This video and replies are BS. “Quit social media” is nothing. Millennials no nothing about real depression, anxiety, or loneliness. Pathetic. You are doing more damage than good.
Great video. John 3:16. If nothing makes you happy please read that
Nick!!! OMG I hit LIKE as soon as I saw the first smile 😀then another, then another!!! Great hair. Great smile. You've made my day x
I’ve been working on it 😅
@@NicholasGarofola it makes me smile more when I see you smile now, because I think I wonder if he's thinking about TimelordUK right now. I love your videos. You are a cool guy. It's mostly girls who do minimalism videos, so refreshing to see another guy
Well , since smarphones are discovered i am so addicted with mine ( i think its because i dont wanna start thinking , or i dont know what to do without it😅😅). The modern lifestyle dont help us at all too ...
I cancelled all social media and focus on what's present.
You are a normal guy
Jut keep living a life your way
It just doesnt look like this age life but who cares
Keep smiling
Dont let the day pass with out a good laugh
Thanx for a good video.
And don’t forget to smile if life feels uninteresting.
❤️❤️❤️
The more I stopped using social media the more repulsive it became and easier it was to stay offline.
It started as a discipline challenge and now I barely log on.
New subscriber here. Awesome video.
I sledged the subscription button Now I have a hole in my phone What about it
Surprised you didn’t mention your cat xx I’ve just lost my dog and I feel devastated without her xx I’ll check out some other content but to me a canine or feline companion is priceless however we are all different and of course it’s fine if you’re more emotionally attached to your drone lol x stay blessed 🇬🇧
Check out ninerlives, he has 2 cats and a lovely community. I lost my tuxie darling 15 months ago, and i am telling you, that channel plus a couple of others eased the pain for me. I understand how it hurts, it still does, but it becomes less raw after a time.
Hell, my younger self is proud of you for landing those tricks.
I feel numb with everything, and i resonating with ur vid
I like your flat face when you're joking. 😁
Alright you got me when you said to go for a toolbox grab a hammer or something and break that suscribe button
Just discovered your channel as I think more about living intentionally myself, for me one of the reasons to live a simple lifestyle is to be able to travel more. Love hearing from others what’s helped them and the chill delivery is a great change of pace from a lot of creators.
I appreciate that Jake!
What's your advice if you find yourself bored much of the time. Not passionate about anything?
I don't do social media at all. Unless RUclips counts? I do spend a lot of time on it. It's winter here, and i find it hard to want to go outside, too cold. I want to live intentionally, but have yet to really work out what i intend...
If you spend more than 5 minutes on your phone on a daily basis, you really need to go to get some professional help.
all those social media apps suck. They make you anxious and unhappy
Have a guess as to what I was doing before I clicked on this video
Hello Nicholas, great video. Do you have a day job in addition to RUclips?
I do. I work for a tech company 😊
This message helped me thanks have a blessed day
Great video, it has me thinking about a lot of things.
You should start podcast at some point... I will definitely be your daily listener. It definitely helps me calm down to see someone looks at life the way I do.
Just found your RUclips channel. Now will watch all of uploaded videos .. great content ☘️
Thanks!
What do you think about sustainability nick....do u follow it
