' 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance (Mk.7) ' Test Drive & Review - TheGetawayer

- VW has offered me the chance to spend two weeks in the Mk.7 version of the legendary Golf GTI. With DSG and a limited slip differential, the grand daddy of hot hatchbacks still performs well on a backroad, but mainly surprised me with the comfort it offers as a daily driver ...

Great review Guido! I've had my PP Edition GTI for 18 months now and can say it's truly the car for every situation. Cruising around with all the family onboard, it's so practical, so quiet, and in Comfort mode the ride is amazing. Then when I'm on my own, into Individual mode with everything set just right for a charging drive, it's great fun and very fast! The steering is great as well - just 2 turns lock to lock gives it that go-kart feel. I test drove a Golf R recently and discovered it wasn't much faster and interestingly felt a little heavy and clumsy compared with the GTI. You really notice the lightness of the GTI in how it changes direction. Some back to back track tests have the GTI very close to Golf R on laptime. There is one downside however.... It's so good the wife wants to drive it all the time as well!!
Stan Hawrylak Haha, wow so amazing to read your impressions as an owner Stan, big thanks ! I haven't driven the R yet, but I thought the steering in the Seat Leon Cupra and Audi S3 was better than in th GTI. That's what made me think the R could be more desirable for fast driving. But I hope I didn't sound too negative there. The GTI was so enjoyable, I'm sad its leaving me in a few days. Great car, no doubt !
With the performance pack, the GTI really is one of the best cars you can get for the money.
No performance pack needed. The GTI is one of the best cars you can get for the money...if you like to have fun while driving a car. I bought my GTI that doesn't have a performance pack...and it's the most fun car I have ever owned. Especially since I flashed the DSG and also flashed the ECU with Unitronic 1+.
Thank you for a great review. I have this car arriving in September and am looking forward to it.
I always enjoy your videos, you're a top man.
Thank you and kind regards from England.
Thanks Guido for the tour of the Odenwald! Reminds me of Sunday walks when I lived in Darmstadt.
Excellent review as always!
Have not seen this for a few years but still, this is good stuff Guido! Every sentence adds to the content and the content is well thought through. I just realize this is German RUclips engineering. We need you back.
Thanks for your kind words, Predrag! I didnt get good views anymore in 2020 so I left RUclips, but Im very happy to read a comment like yours these days. Much appreciated and have a great 2022! - Guido
been waiting for this thanks!
j benj You're welcome !
Great review! Bravo!
Steve W Thanks !
Super video. Very helpful for my purchase evaluation.
+Tiredof Brokespeak Glad to hear that !
Another great review Guido! I was surprised with how comfortable it was too! I love the way the 2 door version here looks, I wish we got those in America! Keep up the great reviews!
subaruwrxfan Thanks Matt ! I like the look with only 2 doors, bit of a pain in parking spots though. Didn't know you guys don't get it. Can't wait to see your F-Type video !
That's not true, we get 2 and 4 door GTIs in the U.S. You must be mistaken for the Golf R?
Torrey B Yeah I was confused why he said that too..
+Torrey B golf r comes in 4dr also
Die nächste super Review. Vielen Dank und weiter so!
Holly1701 Dankeschön !
Brilliant review
Over The Road Rowson Thank you !
I have the Golf 7 GTD and love it! It’s my daily driver, so super economical, but also fun to drive spirited. Can’t agree with you more on the DSG, it’s unbelievable how quick it shifts. I came from a Mercedes ML auto which was so sloooow to shift! The last Golf I had many years ago was the Golf 1 and it’s crazy how far the Golf has come since then.
Great Review Guido! I personally think that the EDM taillights and larger nav screen look better than the one s available in the US
I´m a VW fan since MK1 GTI, nice vid, cheers from Perú.:)
C0RRAD0VR6Storm Thanks !
Hi. Thanks for the great video. I drive a Mk 6 Golf GTI DSG and love the package. When I change after 5 years next May I think a Golf R DSG will be in our garage. Maybe even a Variant/ Estate for the added practicality for the older driver. Thanks again for helping me decide.
Great review! I own a mk vi GTI and I noticed the same problem with the DSG transmission in slow traffic as you mentioned. It's quite annoying but other than that I have no complaints.
Great review, i like your honest / balanced approach. I know it's a pain to edit but maybe add a couple extra cameras (speed/tac and POV on door window). I look forward to following your publications.
+Antoine Pageau Thanks Antoine ! I will see what I can do. Just can't show the speeds on all the roads, because most of the time I'm driving abit faster than I should, but pssst :)
Thanks Guido. For a little more the R or S3 is the car to have here in Canada. Cheers.
david dykeman Thanks ! Yes, I figure awd helps alot in your country :)
Gti 7... love it.
Excellent review, Guido, The Golf R is, indeed, THE sports-version of the MK7. Quite fast.
jjrdias Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks !
Nice review Guido! I liked the slightly different approach this time. Assuming you have an f20 (?) how does the golf compare? I drive a 116i which now has similar power (bit less) and I always wonder about how the gti compares.
It is only made for golf enthusiast to enjoy. My first car was a golf MK1 with a 2L 8 Valve motor and 276 cam. It's a youngster's dream car. I drove the Golf 5 Gti the interior layout and leather seats is made for comfort, most people take out the radio and put in a flip out mp3/dvd screen. I think that it should be a standard on future models. Other than that is all around good car styling is a 10/10. Power is enough when you need it to overtake cars it sounds fantastic.
Love your video! How is this car handles in the snow? Would you recommend snow tires?
Can you do a review about the gti clubsport? And i mean, not the clubsport S that noone can get. The manual version please :)
Just spent a week in mine, soo much fun and comfortable. I stay in D mode when traffic is stop and go, S mode when things are more open and manual paddle shift when there is no one around, paddle shift in slow traffic will make it jerky and drivetrain slop. let the auto do its thing when bumper to bumper.
Nice! You should review a GTD
+Omar Chakkour i think there is one
Awesome video. The GTI is an amazing machine. A proud owner of one myself! :)
Glad you enjoyed the film, it is a great car ! Have you tried the R ? I did a video on that too ;)
TheGetawayer Havnt had a chance to drive the r yet. I did see your film on the golf r . Awesome as always :)
Hi When will you post a video of the Golf GTD, I cant wait to watch it ;)
+Nas Nas Not sure if I will, but my buddy Jan from Ausfahrt.TV did. Check out his reviews and tell him I send you :)
do you have a link?
Schönes Review
KryptonDesigns Dankeschön !
the interior on this car is pretty insane for what it is
the reliability is there trust me! my gti has almost 80k no hiccups except the replacement of engine coils
+fizzlemizzle2010 stage 2 apr tune takes care of that power issue over 300 hp and 380 torque.. enough power for you
Oh you have such good roads there. It would be such a amazing if it is so smooth here north. But, i dont know. I have to test MK7 GTI sometime. Great upshift sounds..
Love your Honest and Informative reviews .I drive a mk7 gti and would Really Appreciate if you could Review the " R " mk7 as l'm thinking of trading in . Would be Great to see your point of view to know if it's Worth it ......??? I always look forward to viewing your work .
Guido you can lower the seat quite a bit with the lever on the side, unless they removed it on the mk7
I had it in the lowest setting, I'm just a tall guy :)
Another great video Guido. I agree that the DSG gearbox is great for fast driving but as you said, in stop and go traffic the gearbox I think is pretty bad. It's clunky and it's made worse with auto stop start and the auto hold feature, they need to be turned off to make things smoother. I don't often read or hear of anyone else raising this issue with it but I'm glad you did. Still, I love my mk 7 GTD DSG!
+Jsah11 Thanks ! I don't think its bad actually. Just the creep you get with a normal auto is missing abit :) I would always go for a manual myself as most viewers know ;)
I do like that exhaust though.
No performance pack needed. The GTI is one of the best cars you can get for the money...if you like to have fun while driving a car. I bought my 2017 GTI that doesn't have a performance pack...and it's the most fun car I have ever owned. Especially since I flashed the DSG and also flashed the ECU with Unitronic 1+.
Have you driven the R yet? And if so given the option which would you choose manual R or manual GTI PP?
Another great video, Danke.
I did review the R with a manual. Fantastic car. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/9PXvs_6fgt8/видео.html
Pleasant review, I would like to hear a little more about the potential advantages of the Lsd over the regular Gti if that is the case, rather than the default option of buying the R if you are an enthusiast?
Paul Walker Thanks Paul ! Well, in general it helps to put the power down, which always a problem in fwd cars with so much torque. Haven't driven a normal GTI so I can't comment on it. Other people said it works good without the lsd, but its offered for such a nice price with bigger brakes and 10 extra hp, I would just get the Performance package...From my experience with the more powerful Seat Leon Cupra, I can say that awd will help, because the Seat did struggle in the wet. Wheel-spin up to over 100 km'h in 3rd was maybe abit too exciting for unexperienced drivers. That's why I thought the Golf R with awd works better. Hope that's a decent answer for you, Cheers Guido
TheGetawayer Tks G, I drove a manual today and on London roads it felt comfortable ( as you say) and couldn't utilise the diff.... Not sure I want one enough!
I've had the GTI for a year now and never noticed the play in the off center steering. I wonder if that's on all cars.
One thing for the viewers from North America is the 220PS is actually at the wheels, so You Tubers compare it to say a Civic Si with 205 HP, which is measured at the crank, what looks like a 15 HP difference is actually a huge difference in power. That being said, if the car came with 250HP at the wheels from the factory, that would be about right.
Red GTI Thanks for the feedback as an owner ! I figured the steering could be better in other cars, but it was noticeable enough in my tester to be mentioned, because it caught my attention.
"Go for the golf R" Say it again!!! I've got 2 kids and would love the golf R variant. VW had the gall to actually introduce it in North America but then announce it won't be sold over here. Go figure. Too many bean counters and not enough car nuts working at VW/Audi. Go kick some beans over there Guido!!! ;)
kevin n Haha, that's indeed bad. I think VW could really use some more sells in the US. Not their best market :/
And you mentioned your car is a BMW 1 series hatch? Another great car that doesn't come here. or you have a 2 series?
kevin n Nope my car is a 1series, actually similiar to the one I reviewed in 2011 with a diesel engine :)
Any chance of reviewing the Golf R? I'd be interested in your thoughts versus the similar S3. Many people say they are very different to drive.
+Dan Martland Yes, will try to get that early next year Dan. Might have to wait until I can get one with summer tires
Love the video! Favorite car next to the GT3! Quick question though, do you think the performance pick is worth the extra money?
Again great video review!
Shawn James Thanks Shawn ! Yes totally, a real bargain for 10 extra hp, the limited slip differential and the brake kit.
TheGetawayer Sounds good to me, I won't be driving it spiritedly a whole lot so I thought I would ask. Thank you!
Shawn James Your welcome !
Sport exhaust? Is that an option in the EU?
Best hot hatch
Sorry should have added the MK7, I have watched the MK6 video many times and love the engine sounds
I miss German b-roads. Such wonderful, beautiful windy roads.
I would consider the ST or the GTI for a sporty hatch right now. Not sure about the upcoming (US version) civic type R, but both the ST and GTI look like great daily + sporty drivers
LittleCD I agree. The Type R looks interesting performance-wise. Maybe I should try to get my hands on one. The GTI is the better looking car and has a nicer interior than the ST for me. I would prefer it for those reasons, I think
Refinement is the GTI strong suit, hands down. I've heard people say the ST is the best on a canyon road. I will have to try that sometime to see if it the case
Great review. I agree that the roominess and ride make this a comfortable daily driver. Too bad there is no GTD on the horizon in the USA ( #dieselgate ).
I owe a mk7 GTI, couldn't agree with ya anymore on the steering.
+Scheffy1777 what top speed did you achieve
jay czyzyk
?random?? fast enough
whats fast
Great review and really helpful as i am deciding on a new car to buy. VW is arguably the best value for money in terms of spec and the GTI/R are too close to call. I have test driven an r-line scirocco and loved it (Transmission was awesome as i am a huge fan of DSG). However, if buying i would go for the scirocco R. In your opinion would you buy an Scirocco R or a Golf R? or perhaps opt for something alternative in that price range? thanks!
Luke Bland Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks ! I think the Scirocco looks great, but I don't like the big heavy doors on that car, compared to having four doors in a Golf R. Same goes for the 3 door GTI spec I had here. They are abit of a pain in parking lots and I don't mind the look of the 5 door versions either. But as far as driving goes, I think they are pretty much all the same. You could try the Audi S3 if you like. At least here in germany it has the same pricetag as the Golf R. But personally I prefer the Golf / Scirocco interior. Greetings from germany, Guido
TheGetawayer Thanks for the reply Guido! i took your advise and have test driven the S3. It was good, but like you pointed out, the interior felt superior in the golf/scirocco, and is slightly cheaper here in the UK. The guy at VW also pointed out that a Golf R400 and Clubsport models are going into production and would be worth the wait for early to mid 2016! have you heard or seen much about these models yet in Germany? Thanks again!
Luke Bland
Not yet Luke, but as soon as I can I will try to get one for a test drive :)
Please review Kia Proceed GT.
Golf R video please. Thanks
Focus ST please!
I'd love to see you review the Japanese rivals like WRX and RC F. I'm interested on the German take on Japanese design.
carrothk Can't get press cars from Subaru Germany or Lexus. Sry
Weird that you think that the steering is soft, mine is razor sharp, precise and gives you lots of feedback.
Very jealous of the LED tails and alcantara cloth seats you get over there. They gave us the cheap seats here in the U.S.
Joel deSanto Really ? What do they look like ? I thought those were standard on all GTIs :)
They are covered entirely in the material used for the plaid as opposed to simply using it in the inserts. No Alcantara and fake leather on the edges. The tail lights are not DOT approved due to the height of the reversing lights.
Joel deSanto The "cheap seats" aren't an issue for me. I love the plaid and I despise alcantara, so I'm happy we don't get any on the cloth seats.
A bigger issue for me is that we can't get nav unless we get the top-of-the-line Autobahn trim level, and that's only available as a 5-door here in the US.
+Joel deSanto Get yourself the golf R euro tailights! Completely transformed my mk7. Those seats are nice I'm jealous. The german model rear seat headrests are designed differently too for much better rear visibility. We got short ended for sure!
+Jeff Puha I have the Autobahn and the NAV sucks, stick with the 2 door. I use google maps on my iphone more than anything. (Can only speak for the 2015 Infotainment system)
GTI or Cupra? TheGetawayer
Guido, is it more comfortable than the R you drove? Thanks
+MassiveGlove I would say they are pretty much the same as far as ride quality goes. This car had adjustable dampers, but even the standard suspension is great :) - Guido
+TheGetawayer Great thanks, and are the seats the same apart from the different covering? Cheers
+TheGetawayer Would you say that the DCC dampers in sport mode are harder and handle curves better than the standard suspension?
i would like to see the audi s1
Do you remember if that DSG was the 7 speed or 6 speed one?
Yippie 6speed
TheGetawayer Danke! Das gleiche wie wir hier in den USA haben.
What type of watch are you rocking?
Its a Tissot, nothing fancy
Not bad though, not bad.
Hi I found him thanks...
I'm not a fan of the design of this MK7. I prefer the MK6 a lot more. Something about this hatch is shaped weird to me, I think it's mostly the rear end and the tail lights. But I do like the increase in power and torque. Always loved the seats and steering wheels in these (from MK5-MK7).
I might possibly be buying an MK5 GTI in the near future. I do prefer the Civic Si over them because I feel like they're a more fun and dramatic driving experience (from what I've seen & heard). Really hoping if I buy the GTI it can prove me wrong and be a very fun car.
INumba1Stunna It would be interesting to read your impressions after a test drive, so I hope you can come back and tell me how you liked it...I have no experience with Civics ( honestly nobody seems to drive them hear in germany, the design of the hatch is to weird to suit the german taste, I guess, haha )...I like the GTIs alot
TheGetawayer I've seen some weird looking & ugly Civics I must say through RUclips (some that we don't have here, in Canada & U.S.). Some Civics they have in the UK I've never seen in my entire life, I guess those are the ones you guys have in Germany also. We don't have any hatchback Civics that are close to recent years. Latest hatchback we got was about 04 or 05 (EP3) and many people hated that including myself. The only other hatchbacks were the really older ones (year 2000 and earlier).. good looking, nothing special, but I'm not into those.
We only have Si coupe and sedan. I'm not 100% sure I'm going with the GTI as my next car. But whether I do or not, I'm definitely buying a 06-08 Civic Si coupe (FG2) after the car I own next. :)
As far as test driving, I don't think I would get a good enough impression to make a valid statement about how I enjoy the car. Not many dealers over here want you to push their cars hard unfortunately, only the rare and very cool ones would allow that. And the test drive would most likely be about 5 mins or shorter. "Like hey we can drive it around the block" yea it sucks lol. And some of the smaller dealers (haven't experienced this with an actual manufacturer dealer yet) even try and pressure you into making payments before driving the car, it's crazy.
GTI PP or CUPRA 290 ?
Cupra. Watch my reviews if you haven't already ;)
wie waere es mal mit einem Tesla Model S ?
itp569 Wenn mir Tesla Deutschland einen zum Testen anbietet sehr gerne ;)
what about km/L?
S Gh 8,5l on 100 km on average
Can you be more specific? In the city __, out of city__
Thx .

How does it compare to the M135i? (if you have driven one of those)
Anup That's more in the Golf R territory here in germany, especially price-wise. I think the GTI can't keep up with a 6 zylinder turbo, but the R very well could. I love a rwd car, but I'm sure for most people the GTI or R is the better daily driver package. I say way more of those on the roads here than M135is
Anup My Mother just switched from a Golf GT mk6 to a M135i. Having driven both I must say that the BMW is definitely way faster. I mean 4.9 to 100kph could give boxsters and caymans some problems. However, nobody is going to drive like a madman everyday and for daily driving purposes, I'd have to pick the golf. First of all the fuel economy is way better. In the golf we got 8.4 per 100km. In the BMW we are getting 11.7 and thats with driving in ECO mode most of the time. Secondly, the ride of the 135i is completely unacceptable. Driving over a road hump in one of those feels like smashing my spine out the top of my head. Certainly it gives it a certain sporty feel when you are driving 'spirited' but as a daily driver, not so pleasant. That may have something to do with the fact that the BMW has run flat tires but those aren't an option. You need those because the BMW has no spare. As for creature comforts, there is nothing that the BMW has that cannot be specced onto a Golf. In the end the decision is up to you. If you are passionate about your driving and are willing to put up with a greater running cost in exchange for a fun RWD car then definitely go for the BMW. As a daily driver though? Definitely the Golf for me.
+TheGetawayer thanks for that! Would be great to see you do a BMW M135i review :)
+FISHURMOMBALL I do agree, if I was buying one it makes complete sense getting a Golf over the 1 series (any in the range not just the range topping GTI/R and M135i). I drive an 09 118d and when compared with the equivalent golf the golf is just the better all rounder but the thing is for my specific needs, the way I drive and the fact that the car is RWD (Yes you can feel it's RWD in the 118d) the car just suits me better! Easiest way I can explain is my parents would approve of the Golf, it's sensible, spacious, quality, a good drive and a 'good image' but the BMW is very uncomfortable esp in my M Sport, much more cramped, build quality maybe not as good if I'm honest but on the right road at the right time it just puts a big smile on your face and that wins it over hands down for me :)
I take it that if you were going to buy a GTI for yourself you would get the proper manual transmission and not the DSG?
This guys name is Guido?!.... LOL!!!!
Yes, italian for I Drive :D LOL !
Hey!!! would you like meh too "UN-pimp Ur Auto" !! .. i love the GTi mk7 good review
Unconventional choice of soundtrack there
TangoR34 What do you think about the car ? :)
adverbs and adjectives.
+gruffydd1000 Thanks teacher ;)
This may aswell be in German I can't understand a word he's saying.
GTI is better than R.
Cheaper & more economical.
Trust me.
Hmmm, no. That AWD really changes the dynamics to a higher level. Check out my R review, if you'd like to see me get into more detail
Great review, good information! I'm picking up my new MK 7.5 GTI on Thursday! 😁 I cannot wait! Check out my channel for my first impressions drive and reactions!
slow.
