Hey man! Love your vids! Those kids are gonna be a LOT of fun after 8-9 years old, take them young though, it's harder, but worth it! I live in Alaska and have 9! 8-18 at home and 21-28 off on their own... nothing better than a kid that WANTS to go fishing with Dad! Keep those lines tight, and crank up your patience, maybe when you're old they will take you! I took my Dad and he was in a wheelchair the last couple years....
Great video👍🎣🐟. Its nice to see that someone else other than me is fly fishing for pike in the UK. Make sure you always do a strip strike when you get a take otherwise you almost guarantee that you lose the fish.
Interesting video, I managed to get a common and fully scaled mirror last year on the fly and recently had a good day trout fly fishing, I haven't fly fished for years and it's revived my interest in it, pike was going to be my next target but like the rest of the world Corona virus has put an end to all that for a while! Hope everyone stays safe and healthy so we can all get back normality soon and deepest sympathy to all the people and their families who have already been affected by this!
This is awesome to see someone else trying to get into flyfishing for pike! I am trying to do that myself this season too! For now my videos are focused on Colorado trout fly fishing!
Nice one ! I was given some fly gear last year (8/9w rods), taught myself to cast an caught pike ! Great fun on fly ! I don't think you are doing to much wrong, the problem I think is the smallish hook that is on the commercially available pike flies here in the UK. Nothing like those you see on Fly v Jerk. I got so into it I bought 3w brook trout rod lol. You should definitely do the same! Wait until the Mayfly are rising ! Hopefully we are all allowed back on the bank. Looking forward to your fly exploits. Stay safe !
Very impressive, man! Its good to see you've elevated your status to fly fisherman! Youll be wearing a tweed jacket soon! TBH, I wouldn't worry too much about the strip strikes, I've been fishing canals for pike on fly for a couple of years now and have a decent hook up rate, I find if I let them turn with the fly before I tighten it's seems better! Easier said than done when a pull comes suddenly from nowhere, and you're fighting against your own reflexes!! If you angle your rod to the line, the tip will pull round allowing the fish to turn away, dragging the fly into the "scissors " of the jaw. Salmon fly anglers let the salmon pull a yard loop of line from from the casting hand (or off the reel) before tightening into the fish. Different from trout fishing! Onward and upward!
Hi Ginger Last night in the online group chat I said, are you a great fisherman or a lucky git!!!! Well I think its 50/50 because you need luck and skill to be a great fisherman👍🎣👍 Keep the videos coming bud👍 More important stay safe and protect your family and friends from this evil virus 😷 Tight lines mate 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
Nice. I would love to use the fly rod more for pike and also for shore sea fishing, but often find the wind and limitations on where you can get a proper cast a bit of a nightmare!!
Power of the fly!! Stick with it fella Try a bit of 30-35 lb titanium for a leader Albright it to a 20 mono class leader ( you don't want to snap your fly line pulling a fly out of a snag) You can use a 2 turn blood knot to tie your fly or a snap lock Using a snap means you don't trim your leader and your leader will last the season most likely I'm not sold on fluorocarbon leaders but that's just bad personal experiences with pike and flouro Nice to see you out an about It's a massive bummer the virus rocks up just as the season closes Got a couple of float tubes sitting around getting bored Ever tried it? 👍🌞
I would get yourself a line tray makes life alot easier with casting when you are wading also now the rivers are closed get down the beach bass on the fly is amazing I am chasing my 3rd double figure bass this year having caught 2 doubles the last two summers and let me tell you a double figure bass on the fly is incredible especially when my fishing is done in a float tube they towe you around for ever my last fish was landed maybe 200 meters from where it was hooked tight lines everyone
Wish my canal was that good. I had my pb of 20lb 9oz from there but it’s uncommon to catch much on our canal. I’ve fished for. Just over 1 1/2 years now and that was my 5th canal pike
Smaller pike are harder to hook with a big fly, they aren't as good at taking the fly the right way and usually swipe overexited at the fly, missing the body and only grabbing the tail or missing completely. Best is just to keep stripping after a miss or when you see a pike hit, withstand the urge to strike, only do so when you feel tension. Also when you know there aren't any monsterpike around, don't use too big of hooks, as in thickness, pike are not that strong in comparison so I usually use fairly thin wire hooks, makes hooking them also way easier.
Both hooks in him... You been adding a stinger onto that flashtail whistler? You could always try a roly poly retrieve cast out and tuck the rod butt under your arm pit then retrieve one hand over the other that way your under more tension when you get a take and can't really lift the rod as its under your arm just keep retrieving when you get a hit and your naturally pulling the fly into the fish.
I wonder if mobile fishing such as lure fishing would count as your once a day exercise? I can sometimes cover a good mile or more when I was out lure fishing before the lock down came in
I live very close to my local canal and I walk the towpath as my once a day permissible exercise. What I find really annoying is that you can use the towpath in this way to walk for exercise, but I can't then take my lure rod along with me and fish as I walk along the tow path. Exercise comes in many different forms and mobile lure fishing along the canal tow path has always been my exercise of choice. I am abiding with the ban on all recreational fishing, however I don't see an issue with walking down the tow path at sunrise with my lure rod, providing I practice social distancing with anyone else I encounter on the route
Best weight for canals or rivers is a #9 although a decent #8 would do . For large Stillwater's , reservoirs lochs etc... A #10 is a good option to be able to cast really big flies . #9 is a good all rounder .
I think they need a couple of extra seconds to turn and start moving, before you lift into them. It's the same with trout. It's not easy, though. The excitement can get the better of you :D
I reckon the issue is not strip striking but you need to pause especially if the fish is coming towards you. Then side strike into the scissors will do you. Or if you have slack line out strip in then side strike
Hi great video I love the fly fishing videos it's by far my favourite way to fish for any species. I notice you don't use a wire leader, is this ok? I've started using a titanium coated leader when fly fishing for perch after losing a nice pike hat bit tjroufh, did I just get unlucky? Would rather not fish with something that might put the perch off.
Love it druggies dealing everywhere and not a care in the world fly fishing on a canal they probably thought you were on one of their products 😂😂great video man keep them coming
Only taught myself to fly fish 3-4 years ago, only tend to target small fish for fun, but what is "strip strike", never heard the term.. If you target Pike, do you have a wire trace on a fly line?
strip strike is basically just stripping the line in like you normally do, but faster and when you feel tension on the line you bend the rod, you miss a lot of pikes, and salmon also, if you 'troutlift' your rod aka try to set it with and upward motion. With pike ALWAYS use a special pike wire or special fluorcarbon trace.
Spectacular sport regardless Chris. Really cool to watch.☺👍 The way Pike strike at a fly is awesome. Really enjoyable sport. Interesting choice of incidental music too.You should check out some of my music on my profile here mate. I think you could use it for future Pike adventures.... ☺\m/ I hope you and your family are all safe and well too.☺
Lovely video! I just picked up streamer fishing myself and I fear that I will have the very same trouble when strip setting! Do you tie your own streamers?
Love it, I almost exclusively fish the fly rod for canal pike. It seems to be way more productive for me than lure fishing. How I learned to strip strike was just to do nothing, when I had a take I would just continue the retrieve until it stopped. Try it out.
Spectacular misses there...soft rod action into a boney jaw....Good to see u out fishin!...no doubt you are following the virus protocols...not so sure about the racey music
Get yourself a line tray mate all the loose line goes in there instead of dragging in the water, can I just say love your videos but I hope this is an older video as all fishing is banned just now
Definitely suggest a stripping basket for working in that current, keep your loose line in check. And this is old, he mentioned these older vids being released during quarantine. Keep it up, Red!
Go to Glasgow Angling centre online and search Scierra stripping basket . They are selling them for £6 or £7 . I bought one last year and it collapses flat to fit in my rucksack but works perfectly for holding the line , rather than standing all over it , or it getting trapped in the grass and nettles .
Really enjoyed your video, thanks! My favourite style of fishing - fly fishing for pike! If I were to offer a little bit of advice, I'd say to change your trace wire to a non-kink one! 😉 I've used 25lb Knot2Kinky for years and I wouldn't have used anything else until I tried Cahira Nitinol braided which is the dogs wotsits, it really is! You can get it from Andy at www.cahiranitinol.co.uk Cheers!
I do have to be a little bit of a whiney boy.. (even tho i don't own a fly rod anymore lol) practice the strip strike.. Can see this rod blow upppppp on you man
What a great video, well done GF! Been practicing casting in the back garden, time to get out on the water and make a name for myself 😂🙏
one of the best fly fishing vid.
Love to seeing those takes on fly rods!!
Hey man! Love your vids! Those kids are gonna be a LOT of fun after 8-9 years old, take them young though, it's harder, but worth it! Awesome video - pike are really cool on the fly
Fly rod fishing in the wind makes it more challenging, love your videos, ty

Great work mate! I love to fish pikes on fly, since I take the fly rod all of the rest my gear resting In a basement.
This is awesome to see someone else trying to get into flyfishing for pike! I am trying to do that myself this season too! For now my videos are focused on Colorado trout fly fishing!
Really enjoy your videos, thanks
Great stuff, give it a couple of seconds after the take before striking, same with trout. Brilliant work in new surroundings.

I like this video...I really need to try river pike fly fishing
Nice video and pike on a new fishing spot!
I love yours video.they are great bro❤❤👍
It only counts on fly! and twice the fun also, god job man.
Tommy M yeah, dude. God job😭😂
Awesome video love fly-fishing my local canal, para
Greetings from Finland! Great video! I Hope you make more fly fishing video's...👍
Glad to see you fly fishing rather then using jig flies
Nice. I would love to use the fly rod more for pike and also for shore sea fishing, but often find the wind and limitations on where you can get a proper cast a bit of a nightmare!!

( you don't want to snap your fly line pulling a fly out of a snag)
You can use a 2 turn blood knot to tie your fly or a snap lock
Using a snap means you don't trim your leader and your leader will last the season most likely
I'm not sold on fluorocarbon leaders but that's just bad personal experiences with pike and flouro
Nice to see you out an about
It's a massive bummer the virus rocks up just as the season closes
Got a couple of float tubes sitting around getting bored
Ever tried it? 👍🌞
SUPER RYBKI - POZDRAWIAM.
Awesome as always
good to see you fishing somewhere new👍 although the fly fishing looks a bit frustrating😁
its hard work mate haha
Awsome fishing as usual,,👍🎣
Yeees... Fly fishing Action!
You are my man !
its addictive
For sure..
Ist THE ultimate way to fish!
Would recommend fishing for perch on the fly, bloodworm pattern has done the business for me in the past.
Good to see some fly fishing.
Some great action there Chris 👍
cheers fella

its fast flowing canal, lucky you.
Congratulations 😉👍🎣
Excellent fun......just shows they will pursue and take even after being pricked. Thanks for the upload. Rich
what setup do you use for pike on the canals ??
What weight rod/line combo are you using? I have a reservoir trout rig and wonder if it can be repurposed? (#7 weight)
sonicstate I fly fish a lot for canal pike with small streamers I use 6 and 7 weights exclusively. Not found any need to go bigger.
I have just got my self secondhand shakespear fly rod and reel, 9ft rod 5-6 WT would this be good enough ?
I wonder if mobile fishing such as lure fishing would count as your once a day exercise? I can sometimes cover a good mile or more when I was out lure fishing before the lock down came in
All fishing is banned by the angling Trust til further notice.
I live very close to my local canal and I walk the towpath as my once a day permissible exercise. Quality viewing. What weight fly rod do you use. I have the Aldi special from last year for £30 which I strongly doubt is up to the job
its only a 7 weight. Would prefer a 9 or 10, but this should do once i get the hang of strip setting
Best weight for canals or rivers is a #9 although a decent #8 would do . For large Stillwater's , reservoirs lochs etc... A #10 is a good option to be able to cast really big flies . #9 is a good all rounder .

Enjoyed that what flies did you use
Do you use a wire trace when fly fishing for pike and a floating line.
You can use a special wire or I use 100 lb fluorocarbon I never been bitten off
I reckon the issue is not strip striking but you need to pause especially if the fish is coming towards you. Then side strike into the scissors will do you. Or if you have slack line out strip in then side strike
Cheers mate keep em coming .Can I ask What do you use for a leader and how long. Do you tie fly on or use a clip thanks

hi matey thank you. on the fly setup i use a 10lb coated wire leader :)
sweet action....
Class
Do you use a wire leader/trace?
Love it druggies dealing everywhere and not a care in the world fly fishing on a canal they probably thought you were on one of their products 😂😂great video man keep them coming
was a right shithole haha At least the jacks were having it
exellent vid

Can you p give some more details about this rod
Just a 7 weight Shakespeare i robbed off my brother haha
@@The_ginger_fisherman 😂thanks man
Where do you go I bort a fishing rod it seems good
Where is this taken?
👍👍👍👍
Lovely video! I just picked up streamer fishing myself and I fear that I will have the very same trouble when strip setting! Do you tie your own streamers?
Keep the rod down and strike with the butt end first. A 5 weight is to weak to set a hook with the tip section.
Looked a bit bigger than 5 lb
👍
