The problem is that I don't want to speak to them a second time after embarrassing myself when I met them initially.

I'm always Quiet and I keep to myself. When I meet people I try not to let my stutter stop me. If someone dosen't want to be my friend cause I stutter, it's not my problem. It's funny how my wife thinks it is so easy to meet new people, but it's not easy when you stutter.

It sure was and is for me. I'm 26 now, but back in high school, I've had several bad experiences with making "friends". One time a girl came up to me asking for my name during lunch. She introduced herself first, and I was stuttering on my name, and she turned all red, and said, "Never mind." Then she simply walked away with an awkward smile. This happened during sophomore year of high school. Plus, I went to four different high schools, and moved to a new state as well. Freshmen year was when I moved to a new state. Didn't have many friends freshmen year. No more than five I would say. As for sophomore year at a new state, and school. Made no more then four friends. Then half way through sophomore year, I moved to a new city, and school. Made no more than three friends. Same school jr year, and only made one new friend, so four total then. Again, moved to a new city for senior year, and of course a new school. Made no more than three friends... As for college, I attended about six or so semesters, and made one...... Reflecting back, it deeply saddens me. Just thinking about it now, I can feel my soul hurting, crying, and yearning. Like literally. That feeling in the center of your chest, when your hurting. No internal pain of course, but like soul pain. Perhaps even spirit. Idk. However, going on two years since I dropped out of college, and as for all the "friends" I isolated myself, and pushed every single one of them away. Let's just say that I feel undeserving, and I'm reevaluating my whole life. Journey on finding myself I guess. Been a hell of a ride, and it still is. Blessings to all that can relate, and or is a fellow stutterer. I salute y'all. -Edit What people tell me over and over is that its about quality rather than quantity. One of my favorite quotes from the movie, "The Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift" is, "Its trust and character I need around me. Who you choose to be around you, let's you know who you are."-Han. To which I can relate to because my trust has been betrayed countless times. By acquaintances, "potential friends" "Friends", and even potential significant others. However, in the end, I always blame myself. Truth is, I hardly blame any of em. Maybe only two or three, but the rest, hell no.

I can relate to everything because I myself is a stutterer. I moved about 3 years ago and I have not been able to make any friends. I been isolating myself for a very long time and I am now in therapy because I am 22 and I want to live life, I am tired of the loneliness and even tho I am tired I am still afraid of speaking to people in fear that they will look at me weird or make fun of me. Yes I know I am not to let what people think about me dictate my life but it’s hard and it’s still a struggle but I think with time I will get better and I know with time you will get better too.

Hey! You could talk to your school counsellor about setting up a speech pathologist to come to school for you. I did that in high school, i can't see why you couldn't in middle school.
Don't worry. Im 20 years old, still young and inexperienced, but i promise you it gets better. The older you get, the more others around you become more mature. They don't care.
I know it can be embarassing and something you want to hide, but don't. When you meet people, let them know you stutter. "I have a speech disorder by the way," upon introducting yourself. This addresses the elephant in the room. Instead of having people wonder what's going on with you, they'll know because you told them.
Please don't keep to yourself because of stuttering. Although it does get better, it's always going to be a disadvantage. So don't willingly let it hold you back. Participate in class discussions, talk to new people, join clubs/sports teams. It's scary at first, but it's so worth it in the long-run.
Sorry for the advice you didn't ask for. Im just passing on the little wisdom i have lol. I allowed it to hold me back through grade school, and I'm working hard to be more social while I'm in college. I realize keeping to myself was a mistake.

@@amylake9064 Ty :DD And I always need adviced, lol. I will be taking these tips that you told me. You are correct, I would keep it to myself a lot but I do want a change. You gave me the courage to participate in class and maybe make a few new friends :) I will try this out tomorrow at school.

For those in the comments who stutter, I have a question. I have a 10 year old that stutters and he receives speech therapy. His therapist said he will show true progress once he comes to terms with his stuttering. How long, if at all did it take you to come to terms with your stuttering?

I know this is a little late.
Im 20. I came to terms with my stutter about 2 years ago. I accept that I will always stutter, it's a part of me. I also know that i can improve with practice and dedication.
The best thing you can do as his parent is be accepting. Don't set expectations too high. Being that he is 10, it's likely he will stutter for the rest of his life. Don't make the goal "stop stuttering," make it, "stutter less," "participate in class more," "be more confident." He doesn't need to be fluent to be a good speaker or to he confident. Don't let him fall into the trap of "i wont be successful or confident or socialble until i dont stutter anymore." He can be all of those things with the stutter. Teach him self acceptance early.

@@amylake9064 Thanks for responding. I appreciate the advice you gave. I'm focusing on reminding my son that it's okay to stutter and millions of people stutter as well. We looked up the number of stutterers in the United Staes and he was amazed.

Unfortunately for me it took me a long time. I'm almost 35 now and it took till I was nearly 30 to truly not care about other people's reactions or anything. I wish your young one the best. Jus tell him to take speech therapy seriously. I didnt wen I was a kid and I wish I did. I'm in it now.

Hi Minka, I have noticed that you stutter on "people" almost everytime. Though you speak great. The stutter is hardly noticeable, here is something I think will help you and what I read in a book when you have difficult syllables. So what you do is just add a vowel before the difficult syllable. So when you are about to say "people" say "a-people" or "e-people". That will help you ease through that word. The issue i see with is this if you feel that you sound funny when you speak that way but trust me no one can notice it. Our brain picks up keywords rather than the entire pronounciation. You can try it in your next video. Hope it helps and hope you can share this with others.
