After years of embedding himself with Arab tribes and living according to their customs, Thesiger revered their ancient code of conduct that made survival in the desert possible: honesty, loyalty, courage, endurance and patience. Through his extensive travels in the Middle East, he developed lifelong friendships and yet also some controversial opinions. He criticized the rapid industrialisation of the region, insisting that "the discovery of oil in Arabia was the biggest disaster that could happen". He also strongly opposed the invasion of Iraq shortly before his death, which he warned would only cause "bitter, bitter hatred". This report is illustrated with Sir Wilfred s photographs, and archival footage of him and his family.

In 1953, my grandfather accompanied Sir Wilfred Thesiger on his expedition in Northern Pakistan. They trekked from Hunza valley to the eastern reaches of the Hindu Kush mountains. Sir Wilfred devoted 3 pages of his memoir "Among the Mountains" to my grandfather.

I remember hearing Thesiger speak at the Royal Geographical Society in London in 1993/4 and was impressed by a comment he made during the questions that he had never done a day's paid work in his life, but had also never had an idle day.
Perhaps we are all losing out by the demands that even rich people have to work to get richer, and so there are now very few people in the world who can focus their lives on a goal or even a whim, to the benefit of everyone else, and so most today are bogged down trying to keep their heads above water and keep on top of their jobs and families, and don't have time or mental energy for a hobby never mind an unpaid vocation.

One of the greatest British travellers among the Arabs; “I shall always remember how often I was humbled by those illiterate herdsmen who possessed, in so much greater measure than I, generosity and courage, endurance, patience, and lighthearted gallantry. Among no other people have I ever felt the same sense of personal inferiority.

This is SUCH an incredibly important video. And I am sure our Arab/Bedu/African sisters and brothers would love to watch it too. Is there any way of getting the subtitles corrected, especially for when Wilfred is talking?

Why did no one bother to ask this man about his opinion on any intervention in the middle east? Think of how much better if a place it would be today if America never invaded..Iraq is ok, Syria is ok, no ISIS, millions of civilians alive...

Rare untold truth, because the mission of these people was to 'explore', 'share knowledge', 'dominate' and 'exploit the wealth' of this region. You can see all people here cheering for him, as they are still enjoy the destruction they have brought about to the region or they are in the absolute ignorance. The legacy of these highly praised 'Sirs' and 'fellows' is what you can see in the unpleasant reality they have cultivated the seeds for.

The interviewer didn't really listen to what Sir Wilfred was saying. He had his own agenda and licentious thoughts: the film was about the interviewer, not Sir Wilfred.

What an ignominious finale for this iconic traveler☹️ Like a caged bird.....
There are conservation efforts by Iraqi birders to restore the damage done to the Basra marshlands for both people and migrating birds👍🏻
Most, not all, care home staff mean well but generally are poorly educated, thick as mince or immigrants with no attachment to their wards - that’s why they work there = cheap and cheerful🤔

It must be frustrating and saddening to watch how the area of a people that Thesiger clearly was very fond of, both the people and the area, was destroyed.5:10 Thesiger has a point there, Saddam did it in his own country. Not that it makes the deed any less horrific. Pity, I can't make out his words clearly.
