When I was a little girl my Mother read me a story about the empty quarter and I’ve always wanted to go. I’ve been to 76 countries but I never got there. I’m an old lady now but I walked with you every step along the way ! Thank you so much for making this journey, I enjoyed it immensely !!!
I remember 7 years ago Leon came to my school and all of us watched the documentary. It is still one of the most memorable things I've ever seen and it was such an amazing experience. I remember asking Leon if he ever thought that they wouldn't be able to complete it and got him to autograph a piece of paper for me. I've lost it now 😔
Just watched. - I've been working in the broadcast industry for 20 years and the film you have achieved is absolutely fantastic - Better than anything on Netflix !
Loved watching this... espe6the warts and all approach to adventuring! Great morale boost when you're laid up in the hotel for a few days when your own adventure hasn't quite gone to plan. Great to see Al and Leon conquer adversity and an inspiring tale of a.real expedition.
Great film. Loved the adventure til you hit busy roads. Shame there weren't off road parallel tracks you could have used. May I ask whether you've recorded anything about how you filmed this yourselves and what gear you used? Asking because you had the kind of shots I expect to see when a crew follows.
Thank you! I'm really glad we got up to the level that film crews normally do. It takes a lot of walking! See here for some context: ruclips.net/video/FA85fBZqjE0/видео.html
Hey Al, just binge watched your RUclips Channel (not finished yet) and I really have to say: you are what you could call a modern adventurer! Thank you for showing us that adventure and exploration is everywhere we are and want to find it. Nobody needs to climb big mountains, cross the south Pole or go canoeing in Alaska to experience an adventure. Adventure is getting out of our comfort Zone, exploring new places and exploring new parts of ourselves. This can be everywhere and can happen by doing anything. Thank you for showing us your big and small adventures. Loved "my midsummer morning"! Perfect example of an adventure that Put you out of your comfort zone and having a good time whithout experiencing extreme temperatures or risking your life. Having crossed the alps being 15 years old, climbed some big mountains in the alps later, did some serious bike packing - my favourite adventure is still me and my buddy paddling down the rhein for two days in a way to little, way too cheap packraft we bought a few days before in the local hardware store for 20€. In the end a blackberry bush destroyed it while we were trying to get it onto the riverbank.
Thank you for simplifying the adventure to certain excellent, yet it might be a deceiving signal to a future person/ people, that’s wasn’t easy, hence I hope whoever wants to follow your steps , should be aware of the difficulty that awaits them. My wish was to show the stars of the desert and the over view by-drone , extremely entertaining. Thanks, and good luck in your next adventure. Somewhere in Saudi Arabia
This video is one of the most inspiring videos in RUclips I have ever watched , Great job and well done, the way you tell the story and how you connected the adventure with the personal self exploration , Well done
Such a cool adventure Alastair, thanks for sharing! I love the human connection and gratitude that comes from being in need, and having people step up and ease your burden in some way as they did on the road so many times. Another point for Humanity.
Did you both spend a lot of time thinking you were pulling more weight than the other guy? How did that work? Were they elastic? Also, is the cart steel or aluminum? The first one looked steel and the second aluminum.
We had a clever towing system which meant that if one pulled harder then the other person was dragged closer to you. So we had to pull equally. (It's about the only clever thing in the whole project!) I don't know what the cart was made of!!!
Great video guys. I’ve been fascinated with this region after reading Arabia by Lev Wood, who of course was inspired by Thesiger. If you’re ever planning another trip and looking for a companion let me know!
awesome! been watching the short version a few times for inspiration. great to see the full documentary. the Queen needs to give you a knighthood Al, you've inspired me beyond words to start my own outdoors channel and explore whats beyond my own backyard! the microadventure idea is one of the best things invented and it really does get people outdoors. keep up the good work sir! atb Tom.
Great work you guys! Your fortitude and equanimity has made it into boss level, that’s for sure 😋✌️ I’ve been in the Empty Quarter for the past three weeks, chilling with my camels, as office work back in Abu Dhabi has been suspended. Hence, taking advantage of the amazing technological age we live in, working from afar, with no humans in sight! Once again, much respect for your beautiful insight, and much-needed observation. Respect from an Arab!
Amazing adventure. Would have been helpful to build the frame of your cart out of aluminium rather than stainless steel. Much lighter. Edit: also some sort of light weight balloon tires would ride ontop of the sand, while bike tires sink into sand due to narrow surface area. Hope this helps.
Totally fascinated by this adventure. This area has a history which has been mentioned in many ancient books including Holy Quran. Though the exact location has not been confirmed but it was somewhere in and around this area. So according to history, this desert was once a very green land full of fruits. There were tall buildings as the people who lived here were the most strongest and tallest that god has ever created. This human race was called quam-a-adh. Here Quam means race. They disobyed the messenger of God, prophet Hoodh (After prophet Noah and before propher Ibrahim) and invited the wrath of god who turned this land into a barren desert. A very very powerful wind blew which destroyed everything and killed everyone except those who obyed the Prophet. These people left the land prior to destruction and were unharmed. So until this day, there is nothing in this area except sand and dust, which these guys have experienced a lot..
When they were entering UAE and mentioned Burg Al Khalifa it reminded me the sayings of the Prophet Mohammad(Peace be upon him) that
1 - Abu Hurayra(Radiyallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “The Final Hour will not come until people COMPETE WITH ONE ANOTHER in the height of their buildings.” ►{Al-Adab al-Mufrad Al-Bukhari by Imam Bukhari}
2 - In a hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari Prophet(Peace be upon him) said, ‘That the female slave should give birth to her mistress, and you see poor, naked, barefoot shepherds of sheep and goats competing in making tall buildings.’
3 - When you see naked barefoot ones becoming the leaders of men, that is one of its signs. When the shepherds of lambs compete in constructing tall buildings that is one of its signs. ►{Version Recorded by Imam Muslim}
That was fabulous guys .. thanks so much for sharing .... I always like to ask (perhaps one day I'll plot a funky bar chart) .... how many dogs did you get chased by ?
I'm 12 minutes in... It seems like you built the cart, tested it and realised it doesn't work all that well but decided to go on with it anyway and then had to abandon immediately while someone built you a better cart. It seems obvious this was going to happen hardly an "unexpected twist and turn"..
Great video but not really the empty quarter ... Mostly stuck to roads and skirted the desert proper, all the town's mentioned have petrol/gas stations with food and drink aplenty. Not worthy of a mention on the rub Al Khali's wiki in my opinion. Nevertheless a great adventure.
@@hankgoresich6836 No Hank I didn't. I posted it after being dismayed that this semi wild mostly road journey is being mentioned in the same breath as great explorer's like Wilfred Thesiger and Bertram Thomas. I can assure you these two are not in the same league.

Cool beans! About the cart design, going from four wheels to eight I can see, did you consider or test wider tires?
