      @Takyomi what I've always appreciated is it never feels like "youtubers" running a podcast, there's never any stiff overly produced scriptedness, it just feels like a group of people passionate about the game sitting down to talk about it. Not to mention mogmail, those segments really help build a more communal feeling, and promotes a lot healthier of a discussion since there has to be effort put into the submissions.

    See, the thing is ... Wuk Lamat *doesn't* listen to the WoL's advice, because WE HARDLY EVER GIVE ANY. She listens to Alisaie and occasionally Alphie or Krile, and we smile and nod in agreement. That's why I agree the *intent* was that we're mentoring her, but the way it's written and portrayed undermines it severely.
    (and this is NOT her fault, obviously, I just want to shake the writers by the shoulders)

    • @The4thHorsemanIT
      @The4thHorsemanIT Месяц назад +8

      A lot of people talk of mentoring about this story, but actually mentoring is completely something different. It is teaching how to do things, correct the mistakes and offer constructive criticism, that is a nutshell. What the WoL does is nod and smile nothing else, so cannot be considered mentorship but it is nice to use the word as it is trendy and makes this summertime babysitting job somehow meaningful.

    • @Boyzby
      @Boyzby Месяц назад +3

      @@The4thHorsemanIT I agree. When I think of a mentor, I think of someone like Kakashi-who actively tries to teach Team 7 things like teamwork and how to think like a ninja-or Mr Feeny who gave perspective and made complicated concepts simple. I think we give her advice like two or three times, one of them was basically a pat on the back.

    Wuk Lamat has two points of character growth.
    1) She gets over her fear of Llamas. It's cute.
    2) She learns that she can't do everything on her own and that it is okay to rely on others. This is a perfectly fine bit of character growth in any story. However, for Wuk Lamat it is dumb. Before Dawntrail she specifically seeks out people to HELP HER with the Ascension. Yet when we get to Tural she forgets that she recruited people to help her and tries to do things on her own only to re-learn to rely on others. Others that she went out of her way to recruit in order to help her in the first place because she knew she couldn't do it alone.

    On the pacing letter: I'm having a tough time seeing how "This is my second favourite expansion" and all the criticism that follows (all very valid btw) fit together. For me this expansion's msq is firmly in last place. I can't really tell if I'd place it above or below ARR, cause it's been so long that I can't really recall all the details and feelings I had about that one, but I can confidently say that of the expansions, in terms of pacing, stakes, gameplay during msq (Dungeons and trials notwithstanding), character depth, growth & competence and overall themes that this was a complete miss from Square. I don't think that during ARR I ever felt as bored and disconnected as I did with DT, but that one did also have its very uninteresting moments. How anyone would place this above Heavensward and Endwalker, neither of which, at least in my opinion, suffer from the criticisms the writer of the letter puts on DT, is beyond me.

    • @MakeSureYouCleanUp
      @MakeSureYouCleanUp Месяц назад +1

      I'm someone that puts DT over HW because for me, other than the drama of dragonsong war and the patch content it was boring and I don't care for the locations it brought. Mind you I don't see the expansion as bad, just a bit bland with a few highlights. With DT, aside from the moblin area and the train arc, everything looked gorgeous and discovering bits of lore connecting back to Eorzea, Amurot and even the First were fun highlights. I enjoyed the little rite of succession contest and with wishful thinking, thought our own political leaders should do the same lol. The story started to dip for me when we got to Sphene but Solution 9 was such eye candy it made up for it. Then you have the dungeons and raids which have a pain but fun at the same time.
      I love EW, but it too had chunks of boring bits as well but the story and spectacle of it also made up for its short comings. For me it's
      EW > ShB > DT > HW > StB > ARR

    • @ASZzztoluca
      @ASZzztoluca Месяц назад

      The difference between ARR and DT is that ARR, at least for me, made me want more. DT fails on that. It has already prepared me to expect low quality in MSQ like we got from 6.1~6.55. ResidentSleeper part 2.
      The rest of the content, is up in the air but the MSQ is solid bottom tier for me.

    • @Kuhazan
      @Kuhazan 14 дней назад +1

      I would place it above Heavensward myself from replaying the entire MSQ before DT launched. I would argue it had different problems that matched or exceeded DT problems : The B plot of bringing Nanamo back, Adding the Garleans in its final hours to Azys Lla only to forget after you beat Thordan with you leaving the area to fly back to Ishgard for a happy ending credits included only for it to not be addressed unless you do patch side content in particular Containment Bay to name a few. And then the patch story by itself without Shadowbringers to come later to carry what was started there the Warriors of Darkness story did not hold interest and almost felt like throwaway episodes of any old science fiction or kids TV show where alternate universe "EVIL" versions of the main characters come to fight the main characters.
      Then on the gameplay side of things Heavensward was a mess at launch in comparison. The most insulting the game can be is when it forces the player base to abandon jobs because game design. I can also point at the deleted first attempt at Field Operaton content. Zones having few teleport points meant a lot more walking during the run time.

    Bakool Ja Ja's popularity isn't just the thirst or memes though and I will not stand for this slander! He's genuinely got a really fantastic arc that's told really well, to the point where Zoraal Ja's whole deal feels even less fleshed out in comparison lmao. and i still really like what they were going for with him, Zoraal Ja's got "eldest daughter syndrome" *bad* and i know a lot of people can relate and their use of his trial for character beats was really good, probably some of the best so far in the game.
    Bakool Ja Ja's whole deal is the pressure from his village and especially his parents and never measuring up to those expectations with the weight of *hundreds of dead children* on his shoulders. When he said that he felt he should've never been born, it all clicked into place for me about why he was Like That before.
    Him freeing the Skyruin in particular was a way to display of how, on some level, he doesn't care if something comes and burns the whole world down because he's never been good enough for what his village wants from him and knows it deep down.
    I do hope we get more on him actually addressing his wrongdoings in the patches, I think he'd make an /excellent/ optional trial quest companion in particular. I really look forward to seeing what they do with him and the rest of Mamook in the future.
    Plus there's something to be said about how overdue we are for a meathead type character, DT has a ton of really refreshing character types to choose from and I wasn't expecting to enjoy the cartoon villain lizard who stepped on my tacos this much.

    I did MSQ and all the sidequests and whatever fates I could get my hands on. I really took my time and enjoyed it.
    Yet - I felt from zone to zone each one was well paced in the sense I wasn't there long.
    I understand the lack of "Combat" quests but that's been a staple for some time I'm not sure if it has more or less than others do.

    I wonder if Snowcloak is going to be showcased with some sort of new graphics engine updates. If the ice gets the aetheryte crystal treatment it could be a spectacle.
    As far as the NPC rankings, I think it's pretty telling that the first comment made is denegrating to the west "They don't have the same issues that we have in regards to how there are people in the western fanbase that dislike Wuk Lamat for reasons outside of her character..." rather than considering that if a character is widely unpopular in multiple places, maybe it's the character? Rather than gaslight, consider the common factors.
    Wuk Lamat wasn't a bad character as a character, she was very poorly written. The voice performance was perfectly fine, it was just terribly directed. This was the case for a lot of performances. I don't know if they used a new studio (since they recorded in thew US for the first time) or new director. She was a stereotypical Mary Sue. She was never actually challenged. She succeeded at every single thing she attempted without fail and the only token resistance was a thin lack of self confidence that amounted to just needing another character to say "You can do it!" so she immediately does. They realized that she had few to zero character flaws so they said "Ok, afraid of heights, alpacas, and seasick constantly" and then played those things for jokes every couple of hours ad nauseum not to forget she rode on a boat three times in 6.5 had had nothing but fun, rode a zip line across a massive chasm three times and had nothing but fun. Then she forgot what a zipline was and had to have it explained to her in the final zone.

    second comment for the youtube gods and also i got tilted about Y'shtola's lack of writing again.
    Y'shtola's main humanizing element in my experience as a Y'shtola lover is that she's got a sort of "false bravado". she has a version of herself she presents and doesn't let anyone get close to her emotionally, for her she'd much rather appear as this aloof mage and i think that really feeds into her recklessness with magic! she, on some level, probably aspired to be a specific type of person as a child living with Matoya and has a very specific self image in mind in how she presents herself.
    Hell I'd even say that's part of why she usually discusses WoL's well-being in private, sure the EW scene is optional but it's there and canon on some level for the Scions to feel that way.
    *and then they never fucking do anything with any of that*
    and honestly it kinda pissed me off that we got the first real humanizing scenes with Y'shtola being just the tiniest bit goofy or fallible in the EW patches and then Yoshi P was immediately like "yeah we're not doing that again" like WHY NOT??? LET HER BE A REAL CHARACTER FOR ONCE!!! her main other trait is like, sassy but caring about the wellbeing of others and she's only ever sassed like 2 leaders in all of xiv and one of them was Magnai so he doesn't count.
    None of that plays into the void storyline so far besides her changing Drippy's incantation. Nothing about her interactions with Zero required her to open up. Nothing in the Void required her to do something reckless and get called out for it. They just. /refuse/ to do anything with her and I'm so so so tired.
    Granted I'm partway convinced that the second they give her an arc she's going to either die for real or get shipped off to a cave/the First and never be seen again.

    I would say about Sphene, it was VERY heavy handed how she was picking and choosing what to show to us to make herself look good and trustworthy. Now the secondary issue here is that I'm not so sure that's how it was supposed to read. I actually get the feeling that this was supposed to feel organic and not like she was making a deliberate effort to make a good impression. Like she just so happened to care so much about a sick kid and some cabbage, not like she was giving us the tour of AND HERE IS HOW MUCH CHARITY WORK I DO LOOK AT ME I'M SUCH A GOOD RULER. I'm honestly not sure what to think about this.

      Most notably, the Omicron tribe quests are the epilogue for Endwalker. The patches proper are a compressed expansion, the Pandemonium raids were exhausting after Asphodelos and apparently imply even more unneeded positives about Venat, and the stuff not about those two are pretty much the foreshadowing towards all aspects of Dawntrail.

    @Adrasteia__ Месяц назад +4

    *"Give props to the writers"... yeah you guys lost me there, sorry. (And this is the first video that came across my recommendations in all my years playing FFXIV)*
    It was on the level of 'my summer holiday story' of a elementary school kid with Wuk Lamat being the elementary school kid.
    "And then I went to the big birds and there was this festival and we danced. And then I went to the funny duck people with the Lamas. Lamas are scary, but I was very brave and even rode one. And then I went to the giants and they were giant... and then I met Speeeen. Speeen is my very very best friend forever now....but my brother was a total meanie all the time and then Speeen was a meanie too, so I was sad that I lost my bestest of best friends, but I'm sure Speeen isn't even that mean, so...."
    That's Dawntrail's writing. If you want to give credit for that abomination, you also have to give credit to every person on the planet, because compared to that a shopping list is thought provoking poetry! Just saying... Also I doubt anyone near the Bard quest had anything to do with it, because that one was decent and obviously written by an adult with the capability to think and therefore write like an adult. So either the poor person who has written the Bard quest has suffered extreme brain damage in the meantime or I would press X to doubt that anyone was involved in this msq who wrote anything before aside from "xyzs yoghurt. Don't touch" for this game. There is a gigantic difference between being an unexperienced writer and being simply incompetent. Whoever wrote vast parts of the msq (singular or multiple people) is obviously incompetent, because being able to write interesting characters and scenarios and most of all write what PR has promised (a vacation, adventure, direct contest with the scions, Erenvilles and Kriles story explored indepth, setup for the next 10 years with the introduction of new and interesting characters - of which is non to be found in the msq, just hours and hours of babysitting and like I said elementary school kid level of dialogue) is not because someone is inexperienced but rather a skill and talent issue. You can learn the basics of good storytelling, but that's something they should have learned before getting hired to write for such a big project. That's what education is for. But you can't learn to create stories that make people forget that it's just a story. And if the best they could come up with given the chance to write for such a big project, for such a big audience was 'Wuk Lamats summer vacation story' as full grown adults with (I assume) an education in this particular field, then maybe they should look for a field of work that suits them better, because what they delivered was - in my opinion - the worst writing I've seen in years.
    To be fair, if they intended to write this story for 4-6 year old kids, it's decent. I just don't understand where dead babies and mass deletion á la "I don't consider you truly alive, therefore I'm not guilty of m.... you" fits into the whole Disney channel for toddlers and pre-school kids type story. I won't bash anyone that likes it, people like all kinds of stuff, but from an objectiv perspective considering the topics and way to tackle it that came before and even the age rating of the game, the DT msq was an inconsistent, in major parts boring failure that neither delivered what it promised nor understood the age group this game was previously made for.
    *To sum it up: I'm not a person that believes in everyone needs to get a participation trophy even if their attempt was a complete failure, so they don't get any applause from me for the few ok-ish parts you can count on one hand. It's just not even anywhere close to the level I expect a story written by adults for adults to be. It's an incompetent and immature piece, written by someone that had the chance to write something brilliant, but wasn't capable to produce anything better than someone in third grade, just with more words.*
