    When I started as a young trucker in 1979 (18 1/2 years old) there where no cell phone and if you had power steering you where very lucky and truckers we’re very courteous to one another, things have changed so, so much and not for the better either !!
    Please stay safe and remember that you have loved ones waiting for you !!

    • @MS-vb4rh
      @MS-vb4rh 2 года назад +10

      I started a little later than you but my first few years was without power steering and no A/C. Spring ride suspension. No way of getting in touch with anyone until you stopped at a truck stop to use the pay phone. Sad to say but I would go back to those days in a heartbeat. Was fun back then.

      We started at the same time, I tell these youngsters about no power steering, no air conditioning, no gps, no heat in the winter, no stereo, you had a scratchy am radio if you were lucky, no air ride, and we were happy, couldn’t get enough. Then I got a new kenworth k100 that had air, air ride and power steering, I was in heaven.

      A few years back a big rig passed me and I signaled he was clear and he could come back over in my lane. I stopped at the next truck stop for a coke and sandwich. This guy walked up to me and asked why did I try and get him to pull over. I explained what I did and why...he said he had never heard of that before. I told him...it was called manners of the road. DUH (most of the new truckers out there only know what is taught them in their classes they took...pity)

      I was out there over the road with an F model Mack. Only options were mirror heat and a fan on dash. That was to help defog that huge w/s not for driver comfort. You had to stop your feet on the floor to keep them warm. Also learned to pick up sheets of plastic and wrap them around you to keep heat from going all to your face. Things got a lot better in the 80's.

Ten minutes later he comes out with a meal from Subway. There are several car parking spots, only fifty feet away.

      What if it is dangerous to keep him in the truck for even another mile? If he has a live load, time constraints may make rerouting not a viable option. Don’t know any details of the situation, just throwing out possible reasons.

    • @63stratoman
      @63stratoman 2 года назад

      @@bobh6728 Excellent point and I can certainly appreciate this. I think they may want to involve local law enforcement as this would be similar to an eviction? Sucks for the Police Department but this protects both the driver and the trainee and avoids potential conflict and charges for assault. This would also protect the trucking company from liability as well. Either way, it will diffuse the situation and the trainee is better directed as to his or her next steps. I am guessing the least a trucking company should do is provide a reasonable, rational explanation, and a bus ticket home. I believe this would happen for any driver terminated for cause if he lives a considerable distance from the terminal and has no personal transportation available.

      AMEN TO THAT. OMG THAT PISSES ME OFF TO THE POINT OF FURY when assholes pull that stunt, or when they fly up the right shoulder to pass everyone that's been crawling for 2 hours. That's why I will either straddle the lanes or will straddle the lane and shoulder so as to block people from passing. There was one time I remember that there must've been 50 cars go blowing by on the shoulder. I had enough and went almost fully into the shoulder but held my position in line. Other drivers picked up on what I was doing and left my spot in line open for me and THEY ALSO straddled the lane and shoulder forming a diagonal line of cars and trucks while the spaces in line were left open for us to pull back into. It was one of the most beautiful events I've ever seen. Everybody in that rolling roadblock and the surrounding vehicles all picked up on it and coordinated without any kind of communication whatsoever and put a complete stop to the people blowing by on the shoulder. And, guess what... TRAFFIC STARTED MOVING AGAIN FASTER AND FASTER AND FASTER BECAUSE THERE WEREN'T SCUMBAGS JAMMING IT UP BY FORCING THEIR WAY IN FROM THE SHOULDER A MIKE AHEAD!!

      I once got a washout on request of the shipper but the thing is it was literally 15 degrees I asked the shop if I can park over night in their bay if I got myself a hotel so it doesn't freeze over and well they said no so the next morning it was completely iced up and dropped to -10 I called a contractor who dries out warehouses to see if he could work the trailer and he said yes so I drove 85 miles to this small garage got a parking ticket and a dry trailer. Went back to the shipper and they were closed for the day got stuck in the snow because my tires melted the snow pack and turned to ice and then finally got loaded it was going to California I went to the cat scale 45 miles out of route and there was a truck broke down on it. Went to a Walmart dc to scale because I knew them and I was 2k over weight went back to the shipper and had the load reworked and made it to California the main highway was shut down because of "police activity" after 7 hours in the same spot I made it the destination, they were closed and had to wait out the weekend. Horrible time and will nolonger get washouts.
