    Hi everyone. I have
recently been given one of these watches for a present. I am a engineer by trade so i have to deal with stats and calculations all day long, if I make errors people can die. By trade I have to be precise. Now my watch is on firmware version 1601 so perhaps this makes a difference. I initially found the scanwatch to be inaccurate but this was only in the first few days of ownership, in fact this is why i found this video. I now find the watch to be spot on with everything, so much so i felt I had to comment on here. I can only assume the algorithms withing's use to plot its stats is based on a constant learning system, these systems are being used in all sorts of modern tech recently. After you wear the watch for a few days this would mean the accuracy consistently improves removing all the false negative hits from its data. I use a Lookee ring for sleep apnoea, this system is the world leader in sleep apnoea devices. If it gets heart rate and blood oxygenation data wrong people can die. Lookee ring monitors heart rate and oxygen result and wakes people from sleep in emergencies. I have compared both devices on heart rate and oxygenation results and they are 100% spot on during workouts. Heart rate increases and decreases from 50 to 150 and levels out at all the variations between. I beleave this watch has to be worn for a few days to improve its data results and the constant learning system is ultimately the best system as results will always outshine none adaptive systems. Dont forget this is the latest tech at time of writting this, learning systems are a brand new tech being implimented everywhere in the last few months. When I exercise I use a thin neopram wrist band over the watch to prevent it from being scratched on my mountain bike and while practicing crav maga, perhaps this makes a difference I cant say for sure. I will test it without it on soon. I am not a fan of the make or any other make, I don’t work for any company involved with any watch. The battery life on this thing outshines any other smart watch, it looks classy and its accuracy is spot on. To be fair I don’t think its this guy’s fault he’s reviewed the watch in the way he has, but I dont think he has given the software algorithms time to do their thing and to constantly remove the false negatives from results. I also notice the guys graphs are on different scales when he compares which make the results look further out than they are. This is a very strange error to make for a scientist or an engineer like me when presenting data, we all deal in precision all the time. I also think a comparison needs to be made next to the same tech, using a chest strap is great but we all know they are all more accurate than any watch. They use totally different technology to get your heart rate. The band will always react faster to changes in heart rate speed, its a dedicated heart monitor designed for sports alone. No watch will react to changes as fast as the band due to the different tech being used.
Don’t let this video put you off a great watch. I will make a video myself soon i think, and do the same comparisons so you can see the results for yourself. One thing i will say as a negative is i visited the zoo the other day and the watched thought i was cycling around it. I was pushing a push chair. You can delete this event from the watch easily enough though. Also I would say to people sending their watches back, keep it on for a few days and you will see what i mean. In the rush to get your refund your missing out on a great bit of tech here.

Hey Rob, thanks for the great review! As an engineer, I have to say I really appreciate the scientific mindset and approach of your work. Related to the accuracy issues with the HR monitor, will you re-evaluate the situation some time soon? I watched a lot of reviews and user comments for the Scanwatch and it seems that some early SW bugs need to be corrected, I'm hoping there will be a fix for the HR monitor too. In case you get some SW update, it would be nice to know if they finally managed to fix the issue. Thanks again for the great work, keep it coming!

Love my scanwatch 42mm. It's the most comfortable watch to wear with the supplied strap. I find my oxygen measurement works fine and never gone below 97% so feel at least mine is accurate. It's certainly more accurate then my Garmin viviomove luxe with varies by a mile and off. Maybe they have improved the software with the scanwatch since your reviews, love mine. Has great step counting and fairly close. It's certainly better than my Garmin. But no watch can be totally accurate as your tests show.

I myself have had a Withings HR sport for a year and a half and I am very satisfied with the watch. I don't use the notifications because I don't find that interesting, but steps and distance via GPS from the phone are very accurate ... and of course 21 days without charging :). Cool video, however, you focused a lot on the heart rate accuracy, and what I missed is an accuracy comparison of the oxygen levels. Most of these oxygen measurement detectors are really toys. Usually completely useless. I would be curious to see how this one competes with the finger measurement device. Same for ECG, a little comparison would be cool. Keep it up, thumbs up!

I really like the accuracy of these reviews. But it would also be valuable to start from the other end: Who needs which measurements and with which accuracy? Which measurements are good predictors of what? And what are the technical options and costs for getting those devices? Would your Hausarzt be able to use these (analyzed) data for a good purpose? What would you buy for your frail Oma? Wonders an unquantified ex-scientist.

Very professional review Rob, thanks for this. When you highlighted the missing heart data that triggered me. I know someone who’s using the Freestyle Libre system to measure glucose. It has a lot of good aspects but they have also had very poor measurements at night from time to time, possibly from lying on the sensor. It really should be a requirement of any system to distinguish between a bad measurement and a bad result although this might be difficult in some cases and it doesn’t seem device makers approach this uniformly. Maybe something to add to reviews? BW, Shane

Hi Shane! For sure, some kind of indication of data quality would be great! I used the Freestyle without much problems myself, but I can imagine it could be prone to errors. When you talk about features, you're missing the fact that they told us that some features would be missing for the early adopters, to be filled in later.
"Scanwatch will be continuously improved through several successive updates. They will integrate your main feedbacks, and will allow you to benefit from new functions, in particular automatic notifications in the event of atrial fibrillation or a heart rate that is too high or too low, as well as continuous monitoring of SpO2 during the night. Another update will concern the detection of sleep apnea. Upon receipt of your SW, you can activate the respiratory scan feature which will detect possible respiratory disturbances during the night, potential signs of sleep apnea. A clinical study is in progress and on track towards obtaining medical CE marking, thus detecting apneic episodes.
When you receive it, you can take advantage of the following features:
    • Record a medical-grade electrocardiogram (ECG) in 30 seconds, right on your wrist
    • Medically validated atrial fibrillation (AFib) detection via ECG
    • On demand medical oxygen saturation (Sp02) rate
    • Breathing disturbances detection during sleep
    • Sleep Score, light and deep sleep cycles, silent alarm and Smart Wake-Up
    • Automatic tracking of walking, running, swimming, cycling
    • Multisport tracking with continuous heart rate, connected GPS and Fitness Level via VO2max estimation • Water resistance up to 50m (5ATM)
    • Altimeter to count floors climbed
    • Notifications for calls, messages, calendar and apps
    • Rechargeable battery that lasts up to 30 days
    • Automatic synchronization via Bluetooth Low Energy®
    • Ability to easily share data with a healthcare professional via the Health Report
As with all Withings products, ScanWatch will be continuously improved via successive updates. Updates integrate key feedback from our users, and allow you to benefit from advances that bring new features, including automatic notifications in case of atrial fibrillation, high or low heart rate alerts, as well as continuous monitoring of SpO2 during the night.
Another update will concern the detection of sleep apnea. Upon receipt of your ScanWatch, you will be able to activate the Respiratory Scan feature which will detect any breathing disturbances during the night, known to be potential signs of sleep apnea.
A clinical study concerning this feature is well underway, and we fully expect ScanWatch will obtain the medical CE marking to detect apneic episodes."

At 5:50 this representing of 50% of the hart beats might be an aliasing error in the measurement. These kind of errors pop up when the signal samples are missed out due slow measurement intervals. If that is really the case then the designers probably won't tell you that... Slow measurement intervals improve battery life, but won't help to get accurate measurements. This should be fixable with an software update. But thanks for your review, I really love this watch and I hope the problem will be fixed...

I know this is close to two years late lmao, but the likely reason the Scanwatch didn't measure your first round of cardio correctly is because there's a certain amount of time it takes until the watch will "start your workout" which can be changed. Just a guess, but perhaps yours was set to 10 minutes until it started the workout. I don't have the scanwatch yet, but I hope that this start workout feature can be set manually as well, instead of waiting.

Have you happened to look at the watch again to see if there have been any improvements with the sleep and heart rate in the last year? I realize that all this work you put into these watches take a long time to do and looking back at a unit is most likely not in your plans. But I thought I would ask as I am looking at picking one up, but you scared me with your analysis. I do have a dedicated running watch so I am not too concerned about fitness stats. I bought the ScanWatch because it was a Health watch. I bought it because it had incredible battery life. I bought it because it was good looking. I bought it because the price was right. I’m giving it up because last night it told me I slept for four hours when I slept through the night. I’m giving it up because when I walk with my hands on a supermarket cart it records me on a bicycle. I’m giving it up because it can’t track slow heart rate. I’m giving it up because the ECG won’t record your ECG when you have a low heart rate. I’m giving it up because it constantly is 1K to 2K steps different than my iPhone. I dislike the appearance of the Apple Watch, however having tested it, it’s step count is accurate, it’s pulse/heart readings are accurate for both atrial fibrillation and Bradycardia and it’s sleep tracking is spot on. Functionality trumps good looks.

Not a huge fan of the design, as it's expensive for a hybrid smartwatch. The reason I'm here is because there are only a handful of fitness watches/bands that do ECG. Thank you for this quick and concise video. At $250+ I'll pass, IMO this should be $150ish too many limitations and the design isn't for me. Honest feedback from experience after working with Withings support for months with no improvement.
Got the latest app version. Sadly, it got worse.
    New problems:
BPM (blood pressure devices) no longer works. It crashes the app.
Old problems (not able to test)
Notifications don't work. Calls are the most reliable, but the rest don't work or are unreliable.
BPM results are not readable when using a dark theme. Background color competes with foreground text, making it unreadable for someone with normal vision. If you are color-blind, I imagine it would be worse.

Since the product FINALLY cleared for being sold in the US, I'm interested in buying one (still the best looking smartwatch I've seen) but not sure if the updates & features are still of value today, or if you've seen worthy alternatives since...

I m considering to buy scanwatch because it is so pretty. But after watching your video in which you showed that it detects only half the heart rate, i am really confused not to spend this much of money on this. Do you recommend this or something else? My main priority is to track continuous heart rate while doing cardio and sleep. Your new subscriber. Thank you.

Hey Rob! Thanks for the great reviews on ScanWatch. Are in the meantime the problems with the pulse and sleep tracking solved by updated? I intend to purchase a Smartwatch. I am more concerned on health issues, quality of life improvements as in running apps or notifications on my (next) watch. Fitness features are also ok. I am trying to decide between apple watch 6 and ScanWatch. I have to mention that from a price perspective I prefer the ScanWatch but seeing all the wrong measurements on pulse and night sleep, I am not so sure anymore. What is your opinion?

Thank you, great review. I have the 42mm version (switched from Garmin) and have noticed that during sport sessions the HR is totally inaccurate. Just made a 30 mins hiit session and most of the time HR was between 60 and 80 bpm, with only 26 calories burned... It's quite a change from the results I was having with Garmin. I hope @withings can fix this, if not there is no purpose in keeping the watch. Thanks

Cool tracker, looks like a normal watch. I have a steel HR, and within a couple of months, the minute hand started lagging randomly. I cannot trust the "analog" time to be correct at all, and have to reset it several times a day. Many owners seem to experience the same issue and Withings never comments or comes up with a solution. I would have got the next scanwatch. if it did not show the same issue… (but it does according to several forums, it does )

2: Feeling weak at workouts in Gym. So I want to track my heart rate if I overtrain(heartrate too high).
3: Would like to control music from my phone with my watch in the gym.
    Questions:
Is Oxygen and Heartrate now measured continuesly?
    Can I control the music?
Can you change the battery on your own?

Hey! Im wearing the Scanwatch and can answer your questions:
1: Oxygen is not measured through the night. You have to make it manually. If you want something like that, you should Go for the wellue o2 ring.
2: heartrate is measured continiously while workout. But for the gym the scanwatch is really bad. A chest strap is gold standard for that. But it can not connected to Scanwatch!
3: music cant be controlled from Scanwatch!
Hope i could help you a bit!

Hi Robert, it depends a bit on what you want. If you want a fitness tracker/smartwatch as well, the Scanwatch is better, since it has the ability to track exercises on the device, displays the time and messages etc. Also, it tracks SpO2 and can measure an ECG. If you want a device that tracks you, and gives you daily advice on your day, and has more metrics about your health and readiness, the Oura ring is better. Both are probably not super great at tracking sleep. Hope this helps!

Hi everyone I posted earlier about how wonderfully accurate this watch has been for me personally, then today it went mental - heart rate all over the place. I have discovered something interesting if you hold the button in for seconds and you will get the firmware version. Press it a few more times until you reach factory reset. Then scroll and you will find Cache. If you clear the cache, (do not factory reset) the heart rate accuracy returns to being perfect. Mine was reading too low then too high, measured 110 while sitting. clearing the cache totally fixes the issues. I can only assume this is a software glitch which results in erroneous data building up in the watch and messing with results. Very interesting, this would go to say the hardware records perfectly but the software has glitches in. Maybe the Scientist on this thing can try it himself and see if he gets the same results as I have.
