My grandfather was in Karelia in early spring. At that time of year the giant caribou flies will land on a human, bite out a chunk of skin, and keep going. He said it hurts like hell. For protection he wore a face mask with mesh gauze all around, and the only way to escape them he said was to stand on a patch of ice where the air was still cold.
