What should you do? (When a Black Bear is knocking at YOUR door?)

  • This Black Bear was a recent visitor to my home in rural southwest Virginia. Bears have become frequent visitors here locally and after being completely extirpated Black Bears now occur in 92 of 98 counties. What do they say one should do when a bear appears on your property or is a frequent visitor? How did I respond to the bear visitor on my property? Did I follow recommend protocols? Usus americanus.

    I met a black bear face to face when I was 23 years old. He was standing on the hilltop in the woods ⅛ mile from my house. It was broad daylight and he was standing upright eating huckleberries. I had a hatchet in my right hand, and my dog was with me (lol!). The dog alerted me to the bear when we were about 50 feet from said bear. His shackles rose, he made a tiny growl, then he turned tail and ran home. (Some protective dog, huh! Lol! 😂)
    I froze. The bear looked at me. I looked at the bear. I believe it was male due to it's upright height and musculature. But I could easily be wrong. Without taking my eyes off the bear, I began slowly backing up. I backed up about 30 feet very slowly. Mr. Bear kept his eyes on me too, but since he didn't invite me to share his breakfast I thought it would be rude to intrude. When I had backed up about 20 more feet, I dropped my hatchet in a pile of soft leaves, took two more backward steps, and followed my dog's example. I turned tail and ran like the wind. Never did find my hatchet. Never saw Mr. Bear again either. But it still brings a smile when I think of him. 🤓 I'm 67 now. We video'd a doe in our yard in October. I love the Appalachian foothills! God' s creation is so amazing and awesome! Thank you, my friend, for giving me space to share my adventure. Much love to you and yours, from your friend Cathy Jo.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🎄

    Great video! VERY informative and instructive. I now know what I should do when I encounter a bear. Humans do have to learn to cohabitate with these beautiful creatures.

    When I worked in Dare County, NC, the Black Bears were protected at the refuge. We had intern housing and RV volunteer sites. The RV site was surrounded by an electric fence. The intern house wasn't, but the metal trash cans were kept inside a shed. Banging on the metal lid would be a good move. I think you did all the right things. It's hard to keep them away once they find a food source, but it helps that you removed your feeders and trash cans. Hopefully this one has decided your property isn’t a good spot to visit. It's always fun when wildlife dictates what our next video will be! Great video as usual❤.

    Hi Frank. In Pennsylvania last summer a black bear mauled 2 small children that were playing. And tried to drag 1 away. The Pennsylvania game commission trapped 2 bears near where this happened. It was a small female that didn't have cubs. They DNA tested to get the right one. It was put down. I work in the woods. And i work full time for the game commission. Almost all the time they run away. I carry a Ruger security 6 4" barrel 357 mag. Just for protection. . Please be safe when you are hiking. I really like your videos. Your Pennsylvania student Jeff. I hope you have a blessed Christmas.

    Central NY State here, out on a hike in a remote area the sun was setting and we were heading back to the car. While crossing the creek we crossed on our way in, I spotted a wet bear paw print on one of the rocks. I didn't say anything to my companion but did step up the pace a bit. I'm sure the bear was watching us.

    We get the here in Colorado sometimes too, and unfortunately, they build a tolerance to the noise. We had a neighbor that used an air horn to scare them off. Worked the first time, then only scared neighborhood dogs. We just have to keep our cans in the garage until the garbage collection comes. Interested to hear what works for other people.

    • @natureatyourdoor

    Frank make sure that people are not feeding them. That is the bear that will eat you. Pennsylvania hunts them hard. We take more bears than anyother state and we have the largest in North America. The largest ever killed was killed in Pennsylvania. Over 800 lbs. They are beautiful and can be very dangerous. Most will run. Be very cautious about the one that just acts curious. Your Pennsylvania buddy Jeff

    • @natureatyourdoor

  • @BiLuOma
    @BiLuOma 7 месяцев назад +2

    I see the noise from the trash can worked better than your voice in scarring the bear away. Next time when you see a bear coming to close you might want to start playing drums with metal lids. Here in the middle of Omaha, NE, I would not need to be worried about bears, just dogs or raccoons. Maybe that noise making with metal lids works against those too.
