UPDATE: DO NOT BUY YOUR BUMPKEYS FROM BUMPSCHOOL. Several months after this video they stopped filling customer orders. A number of Tribe members lost their money to this "company".
Bill, you helped me so much on my journey to becoming a decent lock picker. I heard you are retiring, and I just wanted to thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. This video in particular helped me out on many jobs I've had to pick locks on as a locksmith. Just today, I used your picking technique to save a customer a lot of money on labor for replacing some sfic cores. Your knowledge has helped me so much, and you provide it all for free. I'm so happy to hear that you are doing well, and I'm happier still that you are spending time with family. God bless you, and I can't thank you enough.
Bill, if you grind off those two studs on the tail end of the core you can neatly pull the core apart into the three distinct pieces. Some Best SFIC's have a retaining clip instead of studs but unfortunately those G keyways didn't have clips.
Something for folks to keep in mind as well, those castration bands / doughnuts are VERY important, as SFIC keys don't have shoulders, they're stopped with a tip stop plate on the back of the cylinder, and most are just pinned in with no other retainer clip... You DO NOT WANT YOUR BUMP KEY HITTING THAT BACK PLATE!!! If you drive the bump key too far into the keyway, and damage that pin stop plate on the rear of the cylinder, you can basically jam the whole thing up so bad that drilling, possibly with your bump key still locked up inside the keyway, is the only unlock available, even if you can get your bump key out, the actual key will often no longer work... (found that out the hard way a few years ago after thinking, "no reason SFIC cores shouldn't be bump-able)... When done correctly however, I've found that MOST cores that will bump, TEND to open to control.
Derek Broestler Howdy Derek. I agree completely with you on tge entire design is almost backwards...Like the bitting is numbered from the front to the bow of the key. instead of the typical numbered from the bow to the tip. But I think that bumping in general is distructive to the pins already, but the best style or design is in a way a double blade sword. Doing damage in 2 different ways at the same time.
None... Yet (considering it, though if I do I'll most likely put them up on the company channel, the only one I have up there now is about scam locksmiths in my area)... I'm just a working locksmith and business owner, who follows and keeps up with several of the really good locksport and lock picking channels, learning some stuff I might not know, learning about new products I haven't gotten wind of through other sources, and TRYING to be friendly towards the locksport and non locksmith picking community by sharing some experience I learned in the field the HARD way... But hey, don't take MY word for it... Try it yourself without the bands...
Exactly.... Not to say it can't be done, it most certainly can... and Bill did it exactly right.... BUT ya gotta be careful with it or else it can go real sideways. Like I said, found that out the hard way... First time I tried it, I just used stacks of rubber bands on one of my cores, and it worked on the first or second hit every time, so no damage... I tried to do it in the field (feeling pretty comfortable with the technique) and spent almost an hour trying to figure out WTF happened... Had to completely destroy the core, which otherwise, when I HAVE to drill, I can do clean with one 1/4 hole, so I looked like am amateur in front of a customer, gave them a discount on the service call because of all the extra time it took, and only AFTER did I realize I'd messed up the back plate, which actually keeps the cylinder together... So let's just say, it's a lesson I learned the PAINFUL way.
It should be noted that if you have picked to the control shear line, you can quickly open the door, padlock, or whatever, by sliding out the core and using a large flat-blade screwdriver to turn the two long posts accessible through the coreway. If you were doing this very much, you could also make what we called a "dork" (short for "door key") which is a 1/2"-plus diameter rod with two longitudinal holes and attached to some sort of handle at the operator end.
Way back in the early 80s i attended a major university that used Best locks everywhere, for everything. It also had underground steam tunnels that connected nearly every building. In order to gain access to those tunnels, strictly for urban exploration, we hit on the idea of takibg a few lock cylinders back our apartment to disassemble them, measure all the pins, and create our own set of keys. While the cylinders were in our possession, we also learned to pick them. These locks were mastered at several levels, so picking them wasn't all that hard for rank amateurs like us. We always returned the cylinders to the locks so that usually no one was the wiser. We did this over Christmas break when there weren't many people around. It was a great learning experience, and i still many most of my original picks to this day. Nowadays the tunnels have security cameras and alarms on the entrances, but back then the school seemed to use security by obscurity. There were supposedly 6 miles of tunnels, but we only mapped about half that distance.
I worked on best lock systems for 35 years. . Ma-Bell uses them exclusively. You're only the second person I've ever seen pick the core out. The way they taught us to remove the bad core was to center punch and work underneath and in between the e and the s of the word best on the front of the core. Then take an 1/8 inch drill bit and go back through all the pens.
fun fact those "doughnuts" are castration rings for castrating bulls. I used to work at a retail store that sold them. We used to use them in the auto department to keep the products from sliding on the pegs
I'm sure he knows, as some people just love pointing that out. But i think he didn't want to name them for similar reasons why Bitch-Picking is called Random Picking now.
Actually, they're pretty rarely used on bulls (meaning bovine, I guess there are other animals called "bulls"). It's only practical to use these at birth, which most people don't want to do because the animal won't gain as much weight. There are bands and much bigger rings designed to be used later on. I think these little green ones are primarily used for sheep and goats
I would bet it is because of youtube's stupid new ad revenue crap. They have been pulling ads from tons of channels that might be even a little bit "offensive".
There is basically a hidden video flag for cursing, and advertisers have the option to omit videos with cursing from receiving their ads. Sucks, but thats life
+Justin Updyke, I'm well aware of the "adpocalypse". I just hope Bill isn't the kind to worry so much about that kind of thing. I enjoy the fact that he calls it has he sees it, and hope that's not a thing of the past.
superiorshooter a lot of people are really sensitive is another part I think. I don't swear unless I'm mad but I have many friends who do. People have become less tolerant for just about everything. it's their way or the highway.
Unfortunately due to the design of SFIC cores bumping can and will do a lot of damage to them. This is due to the way they keys are stopped in the lock. The tip of the key has a notch on the bottom and this hits the little plate on the back of the cores and stops the key in the right place. Repeated bumping can bend this plate out and render the core useless. Newer cores have a removable clip in place instead so it can be replaced but if you are trying to bump a core in a lock you can lock yourself out.
Ya know what I like about u bill is ure "il give it a go' type of filming. Your a man with a heck of a lot of knowledge and it just proves u don't have to be a pro editor/filmer to be a successful you tuber. Keep up the great vids mate!!
Greetings my friend! Jeff Moss most likely they are not on the chart because I highly doubt that they are distributed commercially and are only available to utilities. I would love to be able to send a lock to bill but it is not worth my job.
Great video and i got a quick question where can i go to get those best keys for the door locks and does the best keys work for any door lock for work or at home
Hey, I just started watching you and you're great man. I was looking to purchase a bump key set, is there a specific set you recommend I purchase? PLEASE let me know if you're reading this. I'm on a strict budget and trying to start up my locksmith business. Please let me know, I'd really, really appreciate it. Thanks!!!
BILL! PLEASE! How long did it take for this to come in? I placed an order with them over 3 1/2 weeks ago and still nothing! The phone number on the website is wrong and goes to a woman that only speaks Spanish! I have emaild them many times with no response. Any help?
Thank you, I'll pass that along when she gets out of the hospital. I had to cut that video short after she caught on fire while twirling those things. Up until that point tho, the video turned out pretty good, huh? ;)
I've seen people use tension wrenches on the bump key to turn them. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to using your technique over a tension wrench? Thanks for the videos.
..... P locks do exist. I also know why you will not get a P bump key. I work at an electrical utility and we use P locks everywhere. All employees have a P key, they are not distributed outside of the utility. It has been in use for more then 20 years that I know of, most likely longer.

hi bill, this looks like a best -improved type? or still the same?. we have almost discontinued these I.C cores of falcon and best, due to its second layercore which is so thin and it breaks up in a high traffic environment..yes picking is quite a challenge, and bumpkeyying needs a key stopper, but then....raking produce results..and mostly extract the I.C. core itself lots of time. regards.
Real easy to rekey a Best SFIC lock. Ever priced Best's key punching machines? $6000 for ONE type of key multiply by over 40 or 50 keyways from numerous iterations and series of Best Locks some of which are Gov't only, and others are region specific, like Australia has a whole different Best key system. No one else uses it. Why? IDK but I do see those in the USA usually on a gate for dam or a power plant, or some other BLM (Bureau of Land Management) or USBR, or USDA, or FCC or DOD, or any one of other of the USA federal alphabet soup gang's gates or doors.
is it legal for a non certified lock smith to buy bump keys? I noticed some sites say in the disclaimer you cannot buy them. with that being said I made my own bump key for a g keyway. I don't use the dough nuts I pull it out every time. ive gotten rather good at bumping those locks I only bumped to control once. I have noticed that some best cores I cannot for the life of me bump and those are what I think was some type of lock out tag out locks that I got from a yard sale. anybody have any ideas as to why?
Depends on your jurisdiction. Different countries and different states have different laws regarding lockpicking equipment. Sites put disclaimers to protect themselves, but the only thing you need to do is pay the bill. Funny thing : I ordered a few picks from a manufacturer, they sent me "screwdrivers" ;)
If you cut a key properly it will never require a spring to operate or filed shoulders and will never hit the back plate,it will also work first or second bump 90% of the time and will bump with a Bic lighter or ball point pen the key is so sensitive, watch lock bumping with a shear point key on my feed. you never pull out a shear point key a notch before you bump it !!!
Those keys are cut totally wrong and you have to use that bad techniques option to get them to work at all, check out the bumping a lock with a shear Point key on my video feed and you will see how easy a lock will open with a good key!
Stunned at the casual, "no big deal" picking of the badass WC keyway at the end. Awesome.
LockPickingLawyer That was Awesome wasn't it LPL. Very Nicely Done Bosnianbill ...! Keep up the great work. Nick.

nice to finally see an explanation on how these control key based cores work.
So glad you found a use for those G keyway cores I sent you, Bill.
Had a good chuckle when I saw them. Stay safe, and stay legal.
I'm calling them "accessory training aids"...;) They did come in handy, for SURE! Thank you!

Love the look of the bump hammer more than the keys. I need to play and bump a few more locks as not done so for a while.
"Random picking" aka aggressive SPPing lol. Another great video, thanks Bill.

Awesome, I was getting really frustrated trying to pick the Best locks at work. Now I don't feel nearly as bad at failing to SPP these.
That was one heck of a banging beat Bill! The music was nice too I guess.

Enjoyed the video. N keys do exist, at my place of work we have "N" and "B1" cores in use.

There is no O or P keyway. FM is the master for A through G. It's super thin and a fairly weak blank.
Jeff Moss then why does my utility use P locks, and I have a P key?
I stand corrected. I just looked at my chart - never seen P keyway in person before
Jeff Moss most likely they are not on the chart because I highly doubt that they are distributed commercially and are only available to utilities. I would love to be able to send a lock to bill but it is not worth my job.
It is on the chart: s1146.photobucket.com/user/GWiens2001/media/Best%20Keyways/8a6a45862a40ac74da5733262cce4b02_zps827d5bd7.jpg.html
Great video and i got a quick question where can i go to get those best keys for the door locks and does the best keys work for any door lock for work or at home
Bill: you should edit the video,I did not read the comment section with your warning and they took me for $100.00
excellent demonstration!!!
The blonde at the end was a stunner!
it's easier if you use a tension wrench in the key while buffing a best lock
Keep up the good work Bill
what's under the little cover on the back of the hammer?
Just an empty space to put weights.
if you get the core out, can you still open the lock from inside?
Hey, I just started watching you and you're great man. I was looking to purchase a bump key set, is there a specific set you recommend I purchase? PLEASE let me know if you're reading this. I have 2 best “bell systems” lock and a best “c” core that I cannot open for the life of me, any advice?
have them opened by a master, and ask him to let you watch aas he opens them.
I've seen people use tension wrenches on the bump key to turn them. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to using your technique over a tension wrench? Thanks for the videos.
You are less likely to hit your fingers with the bump hammer if you put a tension wrench through the keyring hole to provide turning force.
Glad I put security pins in mine. Although this makes me want to put some alien tech in my locks. lol
Man ... With that sound .. I want this kit. Others sound so much like smashing a hammer.
Mr.Bill, the bumper keys are not showing again when you push the purple button
..... P locks do exist. I also know why you will not get a P bump key. I work at an electrical utility and we use P locks everywhere. All employees have a P key, they are not distributed outside of the utility. It has been in use for more then 20 years that I know of, most likely longer.
Scott Smith that's ok, did you know that you can file one yourself easily?
Hi bill getting a 502 Bad Gateway on the lock-lab.com page can't enter to win?
Is falcon lock still in business, seems they made identical locks?
Yes, they copied Best's designs, but the quality is not nearly as good.
Great info BB , Thanks again :)
At 125 bumps, the law enforcement team arrives, some places sooner than that!
Randy Fitz the keys I make will get it in one hit more times than not!
Because there's such a thing as muffling material...like a coat of rubber.
how good are they for taking bumps tho?
If you pick it to control, how can you open the lock?
You can remove the core, which exposes two posts attached through a rotating actuator. A right-sized flat-blade screwdriver will turn the actuator, or you can machine an actuating knob if you have good metal-shop tools.
@@douggwyn9656 be careful not to bend those throw pins or you'll have a tough time getting a core to go back in.
I did not know you can get bump keys for Best
Lol hey Bill, are you actually a big Trance, house, techno music fan, or is that just like a channel theme? Bumpin the trance while bumpin the locks

Garrie McLaws Yeah, she was "smoking" hot!

the oldest Best i've seen had a 4pins core
I've got 3 of them. They were intended for use in Canadian Post Office boxes, but I have seen a couple in cabinet locks as well.
Really interesting and informative... but pleasant music???
I would accept a giveaway of just the BEST lock cores ;-) (I know they are not in a giveaway).
Those w keyways are nucking futs.

Has anyone ordered from these people? Their phone number is wrong and have not heard back on email. Been 6 weeks waiting for my package.
to bad it aint trioving or assa bump keys kit.
Can't call it "bitch-picking" because of youtubes new adsense rules. They will only allow advertisements on family friendly channels.

Those keys are cut totally wrong and you have to use that bad techniques option to get them to work at all, check out the bumping a lock with a shear Point key on my video feed and you will see how easy a lock will open with a good key!
people put pennies i guess
You can save $10 ball$ when you buy this kit!
