The SNES Rainbow Road theme is one of the best songs in video game history. The N64 Rainbow Road theme is great, but nowhere near the level of greatness that this song is.

this is totally brilliant. The whistling, the harmonies, drums, bassline... the whole lot. It's spot on. Not only can you reproduce the songs accurately, you have a great ear for picking up all the fine details.

One of the few songs in history that can make dissonance sound good.
The song is just composed so well, you barely notice how dissonant it really is! haha
Actually, that opening chord isn't that dissonant. When played out of context it is, but here it's rootless, as a 6th with a dominant 7th. All notes just inverted.

I know I'm really late, but you must not listen to music much. 1st off, this is not a very dissonant song. 2nd, there are many songs that make dissonance sound really good.

This track deserves a 8 version more than the N64 version does. This is the only version that's balls to the wall hard if you don't know how to drift like a banshee on it.
Y'see, back in my day we didn't have rails... we had to drift around every single corner if we wanted to get in first.

That was amazing, as always, man. I know that a lot of people hate Rainbow Road, because of it's difficulty (at least a lot of people I talk to), but Rainbow Road is actually my favourite track in practically every Mario Kart game that I've played.
I've always enjoyed that split right before the last curve, it kept reminding me of a really old-school racing game I had on my first PC, Broderbund's Stunts, which also had “highway” sections with a separator right down the middle in some tracks.

I can feel you on that. A lot of times I remember percussive intricacies from where the song is in the melody... But it seems like you prolly need the drums to help keep tempo.
Actually, he uses a program to break down each separate track, then replicates the sound, then possibly lip sinks it to the footage extremely well, given that he sometimes is far away from the mic, which he wouldn't do when recording. So what he does first may depend on the song.
It is said that a falling star is a player driving off the Rainbow Road course :D

No, of course it's live audio. he records himself with the audio of each track and splices them together. that's the only editing he really does, there's no lip syncing or voice pitching in his videos. Max has actual "perfect pitch", and has trained his voice (and his drum skills) since he was a kid. for a man in his thirties, a couple of decades of practice at his passion, and some genetic lottery, does lead to skill of this caliber.
From his twitch channel and "smooth mcgames" channel. He says all this himself at one point or another. I don't know for sure if it applies to every single recording he's made, but for the majority, yeah.
