Ryan Coogler and The Legacy That Built Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

- With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, director Ryan Coogler is returning to the MCU bearing the responsibility of dealing with the passing of Chadwick Boseman and the legacy that both he and his character T’Challa have left behind. It’s an incredibly difficult story to tell, but based on the rest of the writer/director’s career, there’s no one quite so suited to do it. With Fruitvale State, Creed and Black Panther, Coogler has explored themes of abandonment, inheritance and legacy in a real life tragedy, a storied franchise’s spinoff reboot and tentpole Marvel comic book franchise. In doing so, he’s also built a filmography of inheriting other people’s stories and shaping them in his unique way.
The video was written by Siddhant Adlakha and edited by Clint Gage with graphics by Casey Redmon.

Damn. Clicked this expecting a review of Wakanda Forever. Instead was taken on a cinematic emotional journey worthy of a Pixar opening montage.
Thank you for this. Seeing Coogler's journey as a film-maker is so fascinating.
They should've Re-cast T'Challa as the sequel looked cheap, acting soulless and characters embarrassing . His journey led right into an AGENDA. Sorry brother, but Black Panther will always be your Magnum Opus.
@@SuperOmnicronsj44 the fuck is wrong with you man
@SuperOmnicron Brother? Bitch, I'm girl.
Black Panther was too important to die off screen. Wakanda Forever is a really poor follow up to a great entry. The whole movie literally wastes everything that was built before it for a nothing story, that made Wakanda into a nation of Ostrich. Hollow boned prey with its head in the sand.
This was a really beautiful and well written video essay. Thank you for making this. You really illustrated the nuance of why Ryan Coogler's films are stellar.
Wonderfully told, as always CineFix. You guys are consistently the best at plucking at our heartstrings.
one of the best directors we have working today
I hope to see even more of Coogler’s style and themes in Wakanda forever
I had personally hoped not to. He is really good at telling these type of stories... which I do like him for but I do feel like he relies on that too much. The "haunting spectre" of a gone/absentee parent figure, the tragic fallout of a life cut short before it's time after being dealt a horrendous hand. Having watched the Black Panther sequel I'm very saddened that too frequently the "representation" we receive is often through the lens of grief and trauma and profound loss. My ideal Black Panther sequel would have focused on the peace that can be found in cultural heritage, community wellbeing and personal spirituality... themes the comics have had for years. Instead we got.... well... I 'll wait for more people to see it. I have a full SPOILER review on my channel.
@@thembanitheone i think the sequel will definitely tackle that especially that they introduce a kid and like Creed, we could see an intergenerational story between an idealistic father and a kid grew up in Haiti to follow this ideal. I'm actually hype for this, nothing against the character of tchalla in the MCU but i think, he was kinda already perfect and i think it's because of civil war, i think feige need to let the character with him only like Gunn in guardians movies. We could something really special with it
I enjoyed this video so much, I wish that I could "like" it more than once.
love these kinds of videos that focus on a director's filmography and what it all says
I wonder why this one has so many dislikes (I have an extension that lets me see them)
They prop up mediocre directors and actors based on their skin color and gender. They're woke white guilty liberals.

Thank you for looking at the greater picture.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is deservedly rated as one of the worst films in the Marvel franchise. That said, fascinating dissertation on Ryan Coogler, so thanks for that.

IT ISN"T , re-watch Black Panther. Men made to look idiotic, or inept, and the women uplifted and frankly the latino Sub mariner looked emotionally unstable -sh*t is disappointing AF - but go see it for yourself. REAL TALK.
Sorry bro, save your money
I enjoyed Black Panther 2 so i would recommend it
1 min in: Damn you Cinefix for baiting my feels like that!!!!
Interesting to see them exploit Chadwick's death like that.
I don't care bro, I will GLADLY give Disney $15 plus tip for my seat for the sequel to a mid movie!
I mean just because he is dead doesn't mean they can't continue the franchise
I got a feeling the next movie is gonna suck.
Chadwick will go down as a real life hero to the hood. He is our first super hero. He is a legend. RIP Black Panther.
The black panther party disagrees with you
Will never understand the need to pretend Black Panther was in an any way watchable movie - it was badly written, way too long, chopply CGI'd and edited and full of empty-shell to annyoing to outright unlikable characters. It was even terrible by marvel standards, an ignorant american's idea of a "cooler" africa. And now that they'll make a sequel cannibalising the death of its lead actor and try to pretend it's a tribute? yikes. I truly excpected this channel to be better, as the other videos are probably the best film content on this site.
The first movie wasn’t great but to say it was unwatchable? Many scenes with Killmonger were done well in my view. The CGI sucked. EVERYONE agrees with that. Even this video critique said the first BP had a lot of issues… And how was Africa supposed to be portrayed? It’s a futuristic fictitious city. Were Africans supposed to be in mud huts?
@@DeeSee25 It's difficult for people like him to comprehend black cinema and feel attacked for no apparent reason.
@@DeeSee25 it was bad, and not at all because of the all black cast (that was the BARE minimum of getting it right as it was set in Africa, they better had the whole cast black!) but half the 'twists' and character motivations didn't make any goddamn sense. Killmonger wanting a black revolt in Tokyo?? With all 3 people?
Also the set design was a creative sinkhole when it could have been SO amazing. A fucking all-glass skyscraper in Africa where no.1 job is to hide from the sun is so lazy it's embarassing - I'd have loved to see an unique futuristic design blended with traditional African architecture (which isn't just all mudhuts, btw) making up local fashion and streetscapes, a new type of temple related to their religion etc, instead of dropping an usamerican metropolis in the middle of the jungle and calling it a day. But this all aside, this'd have been just a nice creative plus, the problem is that the movie is shite - how is no one mad when the black guy in the cave stats BARKING? How is that not racist? Not to mention the minimalist IKEA set x sticks set. Christ.
The music was great though, you could the the composer actually did some research on african traditions. Best part of the movie hands down.

Cringe.
Dude, it's a capeshit movie. Don't look much into it like it's some high art film. Crap cgi, a rip off of Hamlet, and crappy jokes.

Beautifully done. Thank you for this
Okay let’s be honest though. I know you’re not allowed to criticize Black Panther or you’ll be seen as racist but this is the truth.
Fruitvale Station: Good
Creed: Great
Black Panther: Was ok
I hate that creed has the stigma of a 7th film in a franchise, when it's absolutely perfect all on its own
Nice breakdown. I don’t think I’ll enjoy the new BP movie though without a T’Challa or strong male figure. The male figure doesn’t need to be the lead, but I do think we need a strong black male figure somewhere in Wakanda - not men made to look inept and silly
I feel like one thing people forget about killmonger in black panther is that his ideology isn't perfect. We forget the fact killmonger cared about liberation of black men. He shot his girlfriend and choked out a woman because he doesn't care about there lives as people. Killmonger is Ryan coogler also representing hoteps and while his message does effect tchalla, we forget tchalla was more effected by nakias message. A black woman's message thats all on purpose
First
Should’ve recasted black Panther
I don’t think so, in the comics Shuri takes up the mantle and I hope that’s what they do here. Doing it this way honors Chadwick in his tragic death.
Yes. He never got a chance to get his feet wet. Shuri doesn’t take the mantle until later in the comics.
The black panther is a mantle passed down from generation to generation, so it makes sense that they didn't recast him.
@@immortalabomination in the context of what happened (actor dying) I would say they should’ve.
Black panther isn't a very good movie, lets not kid ourselves. And Wakanda forever is in bad need of a re edit to trim the fat. Can we all stop pretending?
Well I'm not. I was surprised by the movie. Sure it's not perfect but it's special Imo.

Ryan Coogler and the Ruination of the Legacy of the Black role model in the sequel to Black Panther
A film meant to uplift the relationship between FATHER and SON torn to shreds while humiliating the protagonist villain who looks like a Village People back up dancer that's emotionally unstable. - This was the worst possible sequel EVER.
