    Most reviewers fawn over the basses they review and rarely ever mention the negatives, if any. So I appreciate your candidness. Going by what you've said, I'd probably go with the V5 or the Squier Paranormal in butterscotch, if considering a jazz style. Even your cat gave the V7V the benefit of the doubt, but walked (jumped) halfway through.

    This is a great review. I just bought the Vintage V7 in White Blonde - before seeing this review. I don't think it would have changed my mind. I really like the bass. I ordered good aluminum replacement knobs and an AlBridge replacement Sire Bridge. The bass is beautiful and sounds fantastic. I stand by my purchase 😂

      Thank you! To be fair, my V7 vintage is like one of my most played and favorite basses - after all the mods. The bones, like all Sires, are absolutely spectacular. Upgrading the hardware and electronics made this bass THE Jazz bass in my stable. I stand by my critique of the preamp- having the same preamp in the V3 and the V7 IMO reduces the value in my opinion. That's why I think they nailed it with the V5. V7 bones and hardware (not a fan of the V3 hardware), passive electronics. IMO I can't think of a more perfect blank canvas for a Jazz.

    when it comes to preamp knobs, it's "never too much"

  • @albundy2239

    I got the V7 5-string (v2) with the swamp ash body. I have to say that I barely use the preamp, but the V5 wasn't released when I purchased it. Looking back from now I would probably buy the V5 in natural.
    The knobs aren't a deal breaker to me, as the Harley Benton Knobs from Thomann fit on the Sire pots. So in case you wan't chrome knobs or something, just spend a few quid and the problem is solved. Be warned though, the Sire pots are made of a relatively soft material and the Harley Benton knobs have "screws". So don't tight them up too much.
    Overall the V7 was a real eye opener though. I also have an AM Fender Standard Jazz Bass from 2012 and in terms of quality I don't really see any difference.
    Yes, I really don't. For example the neck pocket on my Sire was definitely cut more precise than the one on my Fender. Considering that the AM Professional basses now cost even more than the AM Standards, I don't see any reason why you would ever spend so much for a J-Bass nowadays. The MIM Fenders might be a different thing, but considering the price and looks of the Sire I would suggest to buy the V5.
    But don't get me wrong, I love my AM Fender Standard. :)
    Regards

    I'm still enjoying my V7 5 that got in 2016!!! The only things that I replaced are the plastic knobs with metal ones, the pickup covers, and the tuners. I've tried a number of string brands and have settled on DR High Beams and Fat Beams. I've bought and sold many basses but this one ain't going anywhere!!!

  • @masterquan4891

    I have the V7 and compared the v3 and v5, the punch is better, and has warmer tones. It is more expensive but has a standard bridge. I wish it had the roasted maple neck. I couldn't get the V5 or the V3, both were sold out at the time os V7 is all they had. I had to pay more for it but the build quality is much better than most bass at the same price point.

    Oooo! 7 knobs on the preamp! What is the world coming to?! What's the big deal, We remember our friends' names, where different foods and products are in the aisles of a supermarket, the names of the players of our favorite sports team, the names of our favorite songs of our favorite groups on our favorite albums, etc, etc... I have a Specter and if I move either of the volume knobs up on the bridge or neck pick up 1/4 of an inch the tone changes which is great! I think all the knobs on the Sire are fantastic and allows you to shape many sounds for many different types of songs & genres. I for one love it!! Way to go Marcus! Keep up the great work bro!!!

      Great video, once again! Since I'm on the market for a JB with 70's pickup spacing (and for me this seems to make a gigantic difference when compared to 60s spacing), here are my thoughts: V7 vintage ash seems to be kind of a "one trick pony" for the Miller sound. I guess the V7 vintage alder could be a better choice soundwise, more balanced and versatile, and cheaper, but I've never played one. Perhaps you could review one of those... The Cort GB64jj seemed to be really nice, great features and good price, but sounded really harsh (and the pre didn't seem to compensate for this effectively) and pretty much in the Miller sound territory, so, not very much versatile as well. The V5 for me is probably the best choice, considering the vintage 70's tone and look - the roasted neck is also a bonus; I just wish it had a more conventional body wood. The Squier CV 70's, 4 string version, is also a good bass for the money, I guess, but I think you get a lot more bass for little more money with the V5. In favour of the Sire 7 knob active preamp, I have to say that one could very often benifit of the 3 band EQ on top of a tweaked tone control; I think I want to play around with one of those for a bit to make my mind about it better. So.... My strongest contestant for a 70s JB is probably a V5. Cheers!

    Swapped the knobs over to metal ones on my V7, EMG for the dual concentric pots and cheap push fit ones for the regular pots. The low diameter of the EMG knobs helps massively with quick adjustments.
    It's a gen1 with upgrades which I've gigged as my main bass for years now, take it out over luthier builds and Warwicks.

      @@LowEndLobster I picked up cheap used parts for it over a couple of years, got some great deals on a set of Schallers and some Nordstrands. Only thing I got new was the bridge which is a pain to replace as the string thru holes aren't in a standard place, a Gotoh 404 works which is what I have.

    You are right on the money with your observations. I bought the V7 Vintage (Alder but same color) as my first bass 5 years ago so it was only one of two models they made at the time. It is well built but my biggest gripe was the weight. Being newer I hadn't realized until I played a few other basses that it was the source of some RSI symptoms I was getting. I replaced it with Fender Player series which I'm very happy with...after upgrading the tuners. Love your reviews!

    Hey Lobster, I have the V7 (non-vintage) and V5 . I like the V5 better for its standard jazz bass feel , the quality of the two are the same. My V7 has the metallic red (alder) with the bound ebony board , I play it in passive mode most of the time . I bought mine about a year ago new and it was around the $600 Mark . If I had to make a choice between the V5 and the V7 , I would keep the V5.

    This is the best review of the Sire V7 I have seen. I live in a small town in the Pyrenees and when I go down to the big city I try to test a lot of basses. On this occasion I was able to try the V7 and the V5. The V7 is a worse quality bass than the V5. Unfortunately I could not compare it with a V3. But at least the V3 is cheaper, which allows you to completely change the hardware without having spent a lot on the cabinet which doesn't seem much inferior to the V7. A separate mention is the master volume and tone button in one. It is very sensitive and you have to be careful when you want to change any parameter of these two, because you can easily change the other one too. Very bad solution from Sire... I think without having tried it, it is a better solution to buy a V3 and put the great Sadowsky preamp, which is easy to use and of a great quality. Thanks LEL for doing such a good review, with the only compromise of your experience. You are great!

    My favourite preamp setting now is everything at center (tone at full, both pickups) except mid freqs - I turned the sweep knob 45 degrees to the back and cut it all the way. With slightly boosted low mids and slightly cut high mids on my EHX Battalion I achieved really nice warm sound - and a believable P - bass sound with only front pickup.

At that 700 - 800 price range the Yamaha BB734/5a is far better value. I own a V5 Sire and it’s a superb instrument. If gigging ever returns my V5 and BB735a are what I’ll be going out with.

    One spec that people may not have looked at. This is a 7.25" radius fingerboard and narrow frets. Non-Vintage are 9.5" radius and medium frets. It's something to know if you like one or the other or don't even care.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  2 года назад +1

      Indeed! I need to do a revisit to talk about that stuff. It's not something I regularly mention in my reviews but really should. I recently put together a J with one of those Fender roasted maple Vintera necks with the 7.25" radius and I loooooove it. The modern ones have the 9.5" radius, and that's what my DIY P has, but the 7.25" radius on the Vintera neck is sweet as well.

    .......you’re a locking nut.
    Awesome, I’m glad you finally checked this one out. I got the V7 (1st edition) last year. Used of course (299 +tax) and thought, for the price, look and ridiculous options (that I don’t use, because I have a bad habit of leaving the cord plugged in and wake up to dead batteries), that it looked played and sounded pretty good. My biggest problem with it is that it’s pretty fecken heavy (and I play my Ric 90% of the time.)
    Also it’s the natural (color) and maple/with white blocks fretboard. Also being 1st edition, it doesn’t have the cool roll over frets.
    But, at that price, with what I already know about the V7.NO FECKEN WAY would I recommend it either. If you find a used one real cheap and you don’t stand when you play it, it’s real nice. I think you nailed this review. Thank you for sharing.
    You’re awesome lobster!!!!(Just in case no one has said so lately) Cheers.

    Nice video! This made me pretty happy the V5 exists. The V7 as such has been around for a while now and is available lefty which is why I've been eyeing it every now and then. However, the preamp that seems to be centered around that glassy Marcus tone always turned me off because that's not really the sound I look for in a bass anymore. I'm getting the feeling a V5 might just be the bass for me.

    Worth noting that the Vintage models have the Bridge Pickup further back towards the bridge than the regular non-'Vintage'
    My Gen 1 non-'Vintage' alder body V7 came in at €438 in 2017 .
    I went alder as it suited my finger style playing a little more than the brighter swamp ash.
    I like my actives.

    @richardmilligan1410 3 года назад +4

    One thing about Sires is you have to watch where the pickups are wired to the preamp. The preamp doesn't have holes for the wires to go through. There's little copper plates. I got a V7 Gen 2 and it didn't sound quite right compared to my Fender so I looked at some of the connections on the preamp, heated up some of the connections while pressing down on the wires. Finally the sound was there. I so wish the preamps just had holes for the wires to go through.

      I got to completely disagree with both of you there, the rolled edges are a major difference and the slightly different neck contour .
      They only people who would say rolled edges are something no one needs is someone who has A never played a vintage bass or never played a very expensive fodera or alike , There is nothing worst than feeling frets cut your fingers up sliding up and down the neck , like on every fender made after 1982
      I have owned hundreds of basses over the years and mostly now play pre CBS fender 59 P 63 P and 61 J , and the sire V5 neck is the closest neck I’ve ever played to a vintage feeling fender , so much so I haven’t picked my 61 for a while and it will not be coming out on tour anymore either the V5 is that good.
      And considering the V5 is $100 cheaper than the original V7 your argument doesn’t really work does it?
      I played a good few first generations and they were ok but just ok, the neck on the new basses has lifted sire’s game far above any of the competition
      And actually makes it far far far more better buy than any of the originals anything fender makes right up to the custom shop so much so I actually sold my CS fender 59 touring bass , these eat them alive, so much so recording my band latest album the sire beat the 61 J every time sounded much better every time .
      And just to add the sire was in the U.K. £399 my 61 J is now worth £8000 ish so erm ... that argument again is ?

    Good review and excellent playing, but I have to disagree with some of your opinions. I currently own a 1st generation V7 vintage (exactly like yours - white ash) and it's my #1 gigging bass. I have previously owned both a fretted and fretless V7 (alder bodied, rosewood fretboards). At the time, there were no V3 or V5s yet, and the V7 vintage offered several improvements over the standard V7s for me (70' bridge PUP spacing, 7.25" radius, maple fretboard, more color options, etc). I'm also left handed. Even at the higher price now, there are simply NO active J basses for lefties out there at this price point with these features. Can't really complain about, "All the knobs and EQ choices" when you're talking about an active J, and while I agree, the stacked knobs sit a bit too high, the quality of them is not all that different than standard J knobs you'd find on a Squier or Mexican Fender J. I've done hundreds of shows with my V7 vintage, and never had any issues with the knobs. Having an onboard active preamp i invaluable to me, a I can cover virtually any tone I need. The "V2" options now - rolled fingerboard, wooden battery compartment, etc. are all unnecessary, IMO. Bet deal out there is likely to find a used 1st generation V7.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 года назад +1

      Thanks and great comment! My gripes with the preamp are my opinion, and I do my best to address those items with mods vs just complaining for the sake of it. My V7 vintage post mods is one of my favorite J basses. Sire's build quality of the necks and bodies is killer, and I like the pickups as well. The hardware, preamp, and lacking battery doors are my biggest gripes but I've addressed those with an AlBridge drop on replacement bridge, Sadowsky preamp, and Hipshot ultra lite tuners (not worth it to address the battery door situation with mods imo). I think the more simplistic boost only two band of the Sadowsky combined with their vintage tone control definitely fit the J bass vibe better than the Sire one IMO. I find the preamp better suited for the M series or P series, but overall I'm pretty neutral on it. I just replaced my P10 preamp with a John East and IMO get a lot more clarity and zing to the tone. Moral of the story, bass is fun and I'm glad you're enjoying your V7!

    • @pjmuck
      @pjmuck 3 года назад

      @@LowEndLobster Well they do have a passive/active switch on them, so you could always just bypass the preamp. But I have no doubt your mods greatly improved yours. One other thing I forgot to mention on my lefty: it has true lefty pots with incremental taper, which is nearly non-existent on other company's lefty offerings. The earlier cheap plastic battery compartment covers always broke, and mine were no exception, but for $10 on Amazon I bought replacement plastic ones that have held up fine. The wooden compartment they have now (which they see as an improvement worth charging more $ for) would annoy me, as I don't like the idea of having to unscrew a cover to replace batteries, given the flip up plastic ones are much quicker. My mods have been: battery covers replaced, pickups replaced with DiMarzio DP123s (humbucking), Hipshot drop D tuner, a bass ramp I made myself, and The Bass Mute (bass mute.eu). This bass can do it all for me. Extremely versatile now.

      On my way back home, I stopped at another music store. Okay, I got extremely lucky, there! It's a story too long to tell, now. However, I ended up getting a NOS fresh out of the box old style (-2015) Sandberg Cali for 775 €. There are worlds between the Sandberg and the Sire!

All the other things they skimp out on, it just gives the impression that they were like "eh, fuck it lol" like the fit and finish, the knobs, tuners and the bridge. They take pride in their pre amp and they put the pre amp on every bass which is dope but it just seems like something not for everyone, it's a bit too much. All in all they're great basses, just not for me. The smaller things which I mentioned end up making a larger chunk of the end user experience of getting what they paid for, just feeling something premium in their hands yaknow? You turn the knobs you get a good feel with some tasty resistance, you string it through a good bridge, tune it up, tuners feeling smooth and thing stays in tune. All this makes your $750-$800 a little more justified. I'd rather spend the $700 on a Cort A4.

I don't remember if FGN makes a J bass that's ~$500 USD, shipped. ESP makes insanely wicked J basses, but again, they're just really good J basses that you'd need to really upscale to like the 2k-4k tier to even really start getting apples/apples.

      Oh my. I did not know that Vintage guitars made a "reissue" series Stingray. huh.

      Dude! Yes! I've been eyeing those Vintages for a bit. They look solid, esp with the Wilkinson hardware (also eyeing the Glarry II)

    I’m trying to decide between a non-vintage v7 ash maple for 515 bucks or the v5 five string for 615.. I can’t decide :/

      Solid deals! I haven't played any of the 5'er J's yet so I can't really comment on the B string.

      @@LowEndLobster so is price the main reason you rate this low? I’m wondering if it’s worth it for 515 over getting a v5

      @@HappyChillmore I believe this model isn't really offered anymore and was replaced with the V8. The reason I rated it as such is because of the price, the electronics (same preamp as V3, pickups not very different), and the hardware. You pay a big premium for the V7 Vintage Ash over a regular V7, and IMO I didn't really think the price increase was worth it given that the hardware and electronics are basically the same. I like how Sire went back and added features to the V8 to add value, and IMO I think it worked. We have a V8 coming soon and I'm excited to check it out. Roasted maple neck, better bridge, gig bag included. The electronics are still a sticking point for me as there's not much differentiation in the V series, but Sire is moving in the right direction for sure IMO.

    Would like to know what you think of the 2nd Generation V7

    i watched both your v5 and v7 videos and i was thinking to buy v5 then i found a used v7 1st gen which is %20 cheaper also in very good shape. now i am confused, which one do you suggest?

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  Год назад

      Both are solid. I'm not a fan of the preamp in the V7 because it's a bit convoluted. For simplicity, I like the V5 but the V7 is a little more flexible. I'd probably go for the V5 as the 1st gens are missing features of current sites like the rolled fingerboard edges

    Does the V7 compare closely with a MIM Fender Jazz?

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 года назад +1

      Yes, V7 having more bells and whistles but worse quality hardware IMO. I'd play both and see what sounds best to you if you have the opportunity. Lots of shops have solid return policies because of COVID- take advantage of this to get the instrument you want (but be respectful and don't over-do it!).
