In 2019, I was able to play the System 16C FZII on a real arcade PCB and cabinet. Although, I believe it was a modified System 16B board and I think the lesser amount of RAM caused an occasional graphic glitch, but it played just fine. I have yet to get that (perhaps both versions, NES and FC since they differ), and the FC sequel for my collection though. In due time I suppose, though lollygagging will only make the prices inflate. I should also get the first 2 games for my SMS as I have not bought a game for the machine in years, along with Cloud Master for it and Famicom (as Chuuka Taisen, it's original name), and perhaps Rastan. At least amongst the 24 games I own (which include the first Wonder Boy boxed, R-Type, and Vigilante games) my most prized possession is a boxed and complete Bubble Bobble. Phantasy Star is just too damned pricey on the thing, and I have no second controller for my PS3 so I could unlock the damned thing on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Though basically it IS in my collection, along with the other 3 games in the series, just unreachable. 2 and 3 I can play on my Genesis as I have boxed copies of both, including the map with the second game, I've always heard that map is hard to find these days.

The System 16-C remake is hands-down the best version, and only M2 would even think to do that 20 years after the original game. They are a seriously dedicated company. The 3DS version is even better for including the endless mode and 3D visuals, but capturing video from that version isn't as easy.
I'm not sure if I'd put the System-E version or the Mark III original in second place. The FM audio is indeed much nicer than the PSG-only arcade conversion, but having the radar is useful and something the original game should have had in the first place.
After those would be the Famicom version. It's about as good as the system would reasonably allow for, though the weapon sound is a bit annoying.
And the only version I'd really call terrible is the MSX2 version. For hardware that's relatively comparable to the Mark III, it looks awful, barely any better than an MSX1 game. And the music sounds more grating than any other version here. It's a very disappointing attempt of a port.

Many NES games also have edge artifacts on the scrolling as well. You might not have noticed it on a real CRT at all. But very showable with emulation. But not that as bad as with msx2 throught.

Im actuelly did first noticed them really when im first time played on a emulator. So its not that bad really or annoying.
On Commodore 64 its would masked something like MSX2+ would do in the video, etc lost 16px resolution in the edge. its depend on the game throught and how well its programmed (its have its own strange quicks as well, but love the sid).
Im do guess the game used the same techincal scrolling as the other game im linked. Also im have newer owned such a machine throught and they choosen not to mask the edge with multiplexed sprites as they will lost too much for other uses. But its does look odd.

    • @spacefractal
      @spacefractal 3 года назад

im not sure im saw them (im did not own a NES my self, but has played some games as kid, im was a C64 fan), but its depend how the game was done. Its mostly only should seen on games that uses 4/8-way scrolling.
To bad MSX has bad scrolling. etc MSX2 did not have horizontal scrolling support at all. They used screen position instead. Hence you see the issue.

I played the master system version only. The MSX2 version is bloody awful compared to the master system wow. So does that mean the Master system is way more powerful than MSX2? I should try the PS2 Sega ages arcade port.

I think the MSX 2 is better in some regards but not all. A MSX 2 sucks at side scrolling as seen in this game for example.

The Master System is very playful looking within limitations, first coin op is too similar to Master System, NES is decent but not great, MSX is a weak offering and second coin op is a vast improvement.

Yeah, the System E arcade board basically is a Master System.

In fact, the famicom version of Fantasy Zone 2 doesn't look as nice as the previous game's famicom version. Still it wasn't a bad version and it does look better than the awful Tengen NES version of Fantasy Zone.

I think even I could make a better looking game than the Tengen Fantasy Zone :)

@@RetroCore, speaking of graphics, the MSX 2 version looks like a original MSX likely they developed it for the original MSX then it switches to the more powerful MSX 2 but they could not be bothered to redesign the graphics and instead add smooth but poorly masked scrolling.

Seriously, SEGA? You put more effort in your FM sound effects for a spin-off than you do for a sequel?

Nope, I still don't like Fantasy Zone. It's still just a mediocre Defender rip-off to me.
