Nerium would keep a tarrasque as a pet
The little gio avatars are great lol
1-20 that was a DM master class. It’s not about killing them, your making moments! The DM gives the players the stage.
I tell my players I love being a DM. I always win because I love seeing them win.
One of the things that helped me make creating monsters easier, is to always implement balance.
If the monster has some unique ability or strength, they should also have some sort of weakness to balance them out.
When I implemented this technique in my character creation, my characters were much more fleshed out. Since I had to come up with a good reason why they could do X or were afraid of Y, it helped build a better framework that I can add extra details to.
I honestly think giving a creature a gimick works better at level 20 than lower level.
Even the threat of "all the group takes 50% of their hp if you failed the gimick" is fine because stuff like power word heal and other really good healing and defenses characters have ar 20th level
"All Volkswagens have the same engine." It explains why the Toureg is such a piece of pig iron.
This video here emphasizes my philosophy of narrative based combat. I bring the pressure continuously until the players feel it; because of Offbeats previous sentiment of “if the players have it, why shouldn’t you?” Counterspell, dispel, blinds, silence. Anything that can swing the fight back to me. I use. Because as the DM my character is The monster and I don’t want my beasty to die any more than the players don’t want their pc too.
shoutout to editor for having fun and making me have fun
First thing i ever did as a DM homebrewing was give the Tarrasque a fire-breath type attack reminiscent of Godzilla. Gives it a ranged option as well as a debuff for the radiation.
This came at the perfect time. I was think of doing a short lvl 20 campaign. Love it.
Since I’m not really in the business of making a witty, insightful comment, I’ll get straight to the point.
Yes, more of these, loved it
Yes, more level 20 content please!
I dmed a level 20 mini campaign, I higly recommend using stealth, invisibilty or attacks when they try to sleep. Lots of pressure from there, also if you can steal from them, so they have to get the big sword back or that kind of thing it can help force them in a direction. Play on distances too, get your maps to be BIG, classes who can move will be very happy and others will feel pressure when they are cornered if no ally can come without dashing. (you can also trow them around)
Love the video! Though, given that the lvl 20+ PC that I'm DMing for is one my cousin built based on one of your character builds... I won't thank you for posting this video, I do appreciate you trying to clean up your mess though 😅!
Wow, this is some awesome advice! One of the biggest things GMs just don't do is actually look at their player's sheets and realize what they can do. It lets you as a GM know how to push and pull the encounter. Especially if players take more suboptimal spells, as Gm you can actually make them useful by giving players encounters where they can actually use them.
I- what??? How do gms do anything without looking at your players sheet? Like I'm legitimately so confused, the entire basis of my dming style works on player character sheets.
Besides my questions about damage, this video is awesome, this is awesome advice, all of this I do at lower levels and I give all my players maximum rolls on hitdie and i buff martials heavily. It makes combat much more heavily
Yeah I am especially not following the wizard DPR
But the video slaps otherwise
@@ajaysent9434 i guess like, if you have a simulacrum, and use a big AOE spell that affects a lot of targets maybe??
My only thing is that thats sorta...disengenious, because AoE damage isn't as good as single target damage, especially when a lot of the stronger bosses are one-creature fights.
also, even if you and your simulacrum both did a maximum damage meteor swarm it would only deal 480 damage to one target, assuming you have 4 targets that gets it above 1k, but not 2k- and- its not gonna that much damage in the longrun, because those grunts aren't gonna have that much hp.
A chain lightning probably would do the same thing.
How do I join a game you're DM'ing? Holy moly, my first vid of yours and your personality is amazing.
Finally, an incositet series
thanks for the vid offbeat i always enjoy a high level monster building video like your last one with the tempest creature keep up the good work.
This is awesome thank you!
Please more lvl 20 battles
Im running the shattered obelisk and my players want me to try taking it up to 20. I want to make the terrasque one of the big end fights but hes going to modified to continue the campaign theme as well as ramp its difficulty. This has given me a few ideas on other enemies on the way as well.
Hey, just wanted to say I think this is the best video of yours I've seen, some solid advice
I'm gonna run a level 20 one shot soon, any advice on non-combat challenges?
I can't wait for more lvl 20 classes! I'm really curious if my friends are smart enough for high level play!
that is exactly how me and my friends
This was cool
I have DM-ed for a party of 3 with Gestald rules at level 10 with a similar amount of allies under their control due to good network effort.
The boss monster had 1.5K HP, and did enough damage to down an NPC or bring a PC to 50% in a round, if it hit everything it had.
It regularly summoned zombies, and it had a d8 recharge on 8 laser attack that dealt enough damage to down anything that didn't make their save, or not do any damage at all cus of Evasion/Shield Master.
It went down in about 12 rounds, and everyone is still alive, that includes the NPC's.
Yeah, DnD-5e is very weighted towards players.
No joke, I was 100% also drinking chololate milk while watching this, can confirm, amazing drink.
I create complex encounters not a one single baddie encounter. But otherwise it also depends on the group. However i agree with everything in this vid❤
Can you do a video about how to make/distribute magic items for your players?
I'mma need a sequel soon Offbeat, I've got a level 12 party (that is probably level 20ish powerful(due to a lot of good things I've given them, bonus feats, cool items) and there are 6 party members.
I've never played in a game that hits double digits, let alone maximum level. So what you have to teach about high level play won't apply to me.
That does not, however, mean that I do not wish to learn. Your description of how to tailor your monster to your players was quite informative, and easily applicable to adventures of any level.
But how do you handle role play encounters in high level games? Seeing as how their abilities and spells would allow them to easily cheese their way through anything
I am thinking with the minions the boss gets a BA hide ability either directing the party to find them or focus the minions down. Yes I made a rogue boss fight big whoop
When my group was level 17...and there's 8 players... they were already too powerful. I didn't ask them to fight a Tarassque, I asked them to defeat a Tarassque in one round, and they did. They're now level 20 and I have no idea what to do with them. Looking here for tips.
Try the 2nd or 3rd edition versions :)
I'm at 4:40 and want to know what you think about Epic Legacy by 2CGaming.
Yeah dming for level 20 is really hard I put my players up against a monster for a one shot that had 2000 HP One of my players is a power builder The other one is addicted to playing wizard and the third one just likes to do funny shit they killed it in two rounds moral of the story do not always give your players what they want
Just do the series cuz you can redirect people to it
Am I the only one who is hung up on and can't find how an evocation wizard multi can deal 1k dmg in 1 round with simulacrum
Overchannel spirit shroud scorching ray action surge scorching ray
Im Dming 8-10 level in my party right now nd my ranger managed to in a single turn blast out over 800 damage. She didnt get a crit
How?
@@Flaraen excellent question. I was young and didn’t know how power balance worked so I gave her elemental arrows that dealt 3 to 4d10 of an elements damage and also an overpowers bow that deals two types of damage with a sneak attack and my latest stupidity on top of that was that I gave her a glove that let her shoot 3 arrows with 1 attack. She shot 3 times with glove and elemental arrows whilst also being boosted by a party member. The thing was a marilith so she essentially could have one shot it however she also had summons who could Chain Lightning. So yeah. That thing died so hard the session after which I did for shits and giggles cause not enough players showed for an official one that her blast had managed to rip the fabric of time and space.
@@Flaraen wait I was wrong she got a crit once however I work my Crits that you deal immediate max damage and add the rolled damage.
Yeah that checks out
@@Flaraen yeah I had no clue what power balance meant in that time
this is useful for high levels of play in general. once you hit lvl 15 it gets hard to really challenge players
