I am NO expert nor even highly qualified. But one thing that has perplexed me is why the right leg should be bent at the completion of the throw as you mention at 3:20. If you want full transfer of energy into the shot then the right leg should be straight - maximum extension would show maximum push, wouldn't it? I have to admit that most throw coaches teach your way and method. But, I recently came across an old video of Brian Oldfield teaching his method and there is one big difference between his method and what is being taught today. Brian didn't stay grounded at the completion of the throw. When both feet touched down he would be in almost a half-squat. Then he used both legs to push the shot up and out. His feet would be a foot above the ground as he jumped up into the air using both legs to get maximum power into the transfer of energy. His belief was that you not only threw the shot OUT but you had to "raise your cannon" and throw the shot HIGH to get maximum distance. To do that, he didn't rely on just one leg to push up but he used both legs to maximize the amount of power generated. After all, you don't squat with only one leg in order to reach your maximum poundage. Do today's throwers just lack the leg strength and speed to leap out of a quarter or half squat position rapidly? Most seem to be fairly straight legged as they move across the circle. It reminds me of many bowlers who lack the leg strength to bend their leg and support their weight as they release the ball smoothly onto the lane. Instead, their leg is straight and they bent their body forward to reach down. Or, they release the ball a foot above the lane and let it thud down as it hits the lane. Are they both examples of how people compensate for bad form and technique?
