So if you're a chess noob like me, and missed how black was able to get a piece ahead, it was at 7:49. Carlsen moves his bishop to a spot that blocks all of the knight's moves. The knight falls a few turns later. ...and based on Carlsen's eyebrow lift, it appears like he knew this would be the result when the knight was originally placed there at 5:21
Love it. Thanks for the post to simplify. End game is difficult, but a screwed middle game is to blame here. I'd be fatal here. Most of us are noobs in comparison.
You can't trap the knight. White rook check, black king move, white knight move. I thought it was trapped and went back to check, and unfortunately its not.

It's impressive how Carlsen converts such a lame opening and a subsequent poorer middlegame position into a win. The real killer is the stranded knight being corralled by the black king and bishop.

Look, I never said I am better. I just figure he dropped the knight. I am only 2150-2200 these days. If a low-rated 1600 player figures a wrong move in my games, that doesn't mean he is wrong. That's the case with 2800 players. I respect them, but as humans, they are not infallible.

i bet magnus planned it all out when he checked with Rb1, He then used white bishop to trap the potential squares for karjakin's knight.. The knight was trapped all along, that's why calrsen moved his king all the way to the knight.
because he wouldnt have been able to block the white rooks with his knight on the D column, by taking with the pawn, he has another piece to support the blockade knight, he had to do this or else he was in trouble.
@ 2:41 after Carlsen plays pc5, Karjakin plays Nb3? better would have been Nf3 protecting the e5 pawn and setting up Re2! Karjakin screwed up a superior attacking position. Karjakin threw a possible winning game away.
After the remaining Knight is captured white observes it's inability to prevent the pawn push by black and resigns. Very close match material wise but black's position ultimately ensured victory. Cool stuff.

he's great a chess but he's not psychic lol
colbol18 Not psychic but he knew that was a poor position for the knight, that he could focus on keeping trapped.
Ketroc well by the way you worded it, it sounded like you were saying Carlsen knew he would win the knight like 20 moves in advance
Carlsen didn't take the rook at 7:21 to trap the knight later... Amazing
How did he even see that? o.O I mean it's like being able to have a feeling for all those squares tree moves ahead.

Carlsen managed to get active counterplay in return for both pawns, then turned it into a full point by means of his extraordinary endgame play :)
When carlsen move the pawn to a3......
His king needed to move forward or toward his pawns to protect them. He couldnt do this so he put his hand out and said, "ahhhh fuck, you got me" :)
No, because black plays Rxc4 attacking bishop, c2 pawn and rook, instead of Kxd7. After Rb7, follows Rxc2, attacking a2 also, and equalisng material.
The knight was trapped. It did not have any squares to jump to and escape. Magnus brought his king over knowing the knight had to stay put ;)
at 3:46 when Magnus is thinking about what to do with the E6 pawn...why doesn't he take with his Bishop for a more favorable pawn structure?
doesn't matter anyway still came away with the win. at the end also Karjakin only has 2 seconds on the clock and down an entire minor piece.
why did karjakin give his knight for free? there was no reason for him to give it up, he could have won if he retained his knight.
I'm sure the moves are brilliant, they are just too far above my level for me to understand
2 pawns up? Just look at white's horrible pawn structure... At no point in the game did Karjakin have this one in the bag...
Позиционно Карякин был лучше. Потом пошли размены и приплыли
белые всегда позиционно лучше
why do they only have 2 queens at the side to put in when their pawn goes throw? sometimes a knight is better :P
why not instead of rook up at 5:15 bishop to E4 threatening a rook and at least netting one of the doubled pawns?
once I was down a half piece but luckily they someone around had some decent glue so I pieced it back together.
Why not join the world blitz and make better moves than a rated 2780 player? What's your rating by the way?
Carlsen is the best in the world
because white can no longer protect the pawns, bishop takes f4 and the e pawn marches in.
Are you sure? Did you understand the whole thing or are you just applying your own-created fallacies?
The guy who extends his hand for the handshake is the one who concedes the game, so Carlsen won.
can anyone tell me the time control? Is it three mins, one second with two second fischer delay?

are you watching the game lol its trapped by the white bishop and blacks king got there first
how do you know whether the shake of the hand is either a resign or a draw? D; i can never tell

no, he resigned because he was down a piece in a simple ending.
Karjakin was down a full piece. Thats why he resigned.
Carlsen was up a piece, how can there be any doubt who won?
Jugando contra Carlsen, se te bajan los calcetines del susto.
