Very likeable Chessplayer, seems like a gentleman. Magnus had his most exciting game in years against him in another video, Richard made a genius move and it went into a crazy two double queens ending and a draw. According to Magnus he wouldn't mind if he had lost as he had so much fun . Richard is a very high expert there.

@@iCrestfalleN It's a complicated series of plays... the a4 pawn is now attacked by both Queen and Bishop, so if Carlsen takes with Bishop Rapport cannot retake with Ra4 as it will be hanging, and if Carlsen does take with Ba4 both of Rapport's knights will be under attack by Carlsen's Bishops, with possible check on White King which is why I assume Rapport played Kh8 (which probably wasn't needed but it happens under time constraints). Basically because the pawn was hanging Rapport was forced to go for damage control giving Carlsen the initiative.

Qxf5 2 Qxb6, and the queen cant be taken since the knight is pinned on d5. So its a knight trade, but white ends up with a tempo on black's b pawn and forces black to waste another tempo defending it. Actually I think Carlsen actually calculated even farther, to 2 ... Qd7 3 Bxd5 cxd5 (basically forced, the queen can't take and unguard the b pawn) 4 Bxa5, which wins the a-pawn anyway. Guy is good at chess.

Help me here I am no great chess player but at 8:05 when Magnus moves the rook from a1 to e1 wouldn't it have been checkmate if he had moved the queen from C5 to F8? The King would not have had anywhere to move and there would be nothing to eat the queen if it went there.

At 7:45 there is a clear checkmate for carlsen opponent is carlsen moves his queen to f8 I don't know why carlsen didn't saw that or did he just ignored it for some reason.
I took 5 min to try to answer, but i am too inexperienced. My low skill guess is that it has something to do with protecting the King from the black queen but it's probably more sublte.

@@ericastier1646 that makes sense. It leaves the pawn on b7 unprotected, so the queen has to go back, you lose a tempo and immobilize the queen for a few moves, until you can reroute the bishop. It's messy and takes away your attack, which you don't want to do in blitz.

I’m guessing Magnus would have taken the Knight on b6, which is undefended because the knight on d5 is pinned by Magnus’s bishop. And so, rapport moves his king, which alleviates the pin.
