This whole "single disc" argument really proves how effective and genial is the White Album. You notice that everyone that makes these playlists chooses different songs and very different orders, meaning that the album is very varied and has tastes for almost everyone. If it was released as a single disc, I wouldn't have be as iconic as it is today.
not sure, I reckon if they released it as a single disc and then used the songs which didn't make onto Let it Be , because Let it be just wasn't anywhere near the quality level.
True - but in reality, the only reason there are so many songs on it is because the Beatles were trying to get out of their EMI contract, which was broken down in terms of songs, not albums - otherwise, it would have been a normal-length record. They just wanted to dump *everything* onto it so they could escape EMI's contract after it was released. Which isn't to say they tried to also make a good double album in the process, but that was the specific reason for it not being a normal-length LP - and why it's so fragmented in terms of style. Lennon and McCartney were largely already writing separately at this point.
Uh! When it was released CDs hadn't been invented, which means if you wanted to skip a song you would have had to get up, take the stylus off the record, then place it in the groove preceding the song you want to hear. Do you get it? There are lots of filler on the album, and a few real clunkers. It really should have been a single album. The Beatles included songs that really should have been shelved to fulfill their contract with EMI, that's it.
Finally someone in their right mind, I agree totally! And that would've been completely possible if they had included the Yellow Submarine songs and the singles.
Yusef Khalil Yes, the white album also had several outtakes that could’ve been included (Not Guilty, Junk, What’s The New Mary Jane?, etc.) and it could’ve given Hey Jude and Revolution a home on an album
Funny, I took this to be like "You guys don't know what "Yer Blues" drums sound like". Dude, I could play every note of Ringo's drum parts since 1971. I practiced it until it was the same as Ringo's (For fun)! I'm glad you're diggin' it, Ryder. Listen to the drums on "Helter Skelter".
I've made many versions of a single white album playlist. Here's the latest one I've thrown together: Side One: 1. Back in the USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Everybody's Got Something to Hide... 4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 5. Revolution 1 6. I Will 7. Julia Side Two: 1. Helter Skelter 2. Martha My Dear 3. Don't Pass Me By 4. Sexy Sadie 5. Mother Nature's Son 6. Happiness is a Warm Gun 7. Blackbird
One of my favorite albums ever and a total masterpiece, I wouldn't mess with it at all. Not that I'm gonna throw Revolution 9 on every morning when I wake up but I'm also not going to skip it if I'm having a full listen.
Good list, though I would never put Glass Onion anywhere but where it originally is. The 1-2-3 punch of USSR, Prudence, & Glass Onion is an unbeatable intro.
Here is one that I did Side 1: Back in the U.S.S.R Dear prudence Glass onion While my guitar gently weeps Happiness is a warm gun Blackbird Don't pass me by I will Side 2: Julia Yer blues Sexy sadie Helter skelter Long, long, long Savoy truffle Good night
Never really thought about doing my own single LP version of the White Album. Just listened to your Spotify playlist and I like it! Good explanations for your choices too. But, in Paul McCartney's own words "It's the Beatles, it's the bloody White Album, leave it alone". Peace...
This was very effective because you showed just how difficult this task is. If you’re a big Beatles fan you have to give up a significant number of songs of that you love to condense it down to one album. I think my version would look extremely similar but I would slot sexy Sadie in for cry baby cry. I couldn’t live without sexy Sadie.
@@MacXpert74 But it's by no.means a standard blues. The Beatles are far too original for that. It's not just a three chord job like most blues tunes and it has a zany time signarure. Unlike your typical blues (yer blues-as John's pun would have it), it doesn't stick to the blues formula lyrically either. Would your typical blues tune reference Bob Dylan?.Unlike a lot of blues which just consist of stock phrases, you can tell John here is communicating what he genuinely feels. His pain is real. He means it, man! Apart from the throwaway 12 Bar Original, this is the only Beatles' blues (It's yer blues, folks. There ain't gonna be any others) There's a reason for that. John chooses this song form because it's the perfect vehicle for what he wants to express. . The whole point of a blues is (arguably) to.be an.outlet for the artist's pain No other form would do. No other Beatles ' track communicates so much pain. Give this tune another go. It's perfect in and of itself.
@@kenrussell1093 John said it's the history of rock 'n' roll in one song. That is maybe open to question, but it does suggest that he attached some importance to it.
Play it in double time and you've got Cold Turkey. Better song too. This was a pisstake on all the new heavy blues outfits emerging thru 67-68. Of course Cream split up that same year. Never did a band do so much in so little time. Except the Beatles. And if Zep had called it quits in late '71 they wouldn't have needed to work again
First off let me start by saying I appreciate you giving us YOUR single disc white album based on your tastes. Some others I’ve watch on this topic made a single album based on the most listened to and most streamed songs. Second, I made a playlist of your list on Apple Music (cause I don’t have Spotify anymore), and found it a fun and really enjoyable and well thought out listening experience. That said though, here would be my 1 album track list: A1 Yer Blues, A2 Savoy Truffle, A3 The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, A4 Sexy Sadie, A5 Why Don’t We Do It In The Road, A6 Helter Skelter, A7 Happiness Is A Warm Gun, A8 I Will B1 Piggies, B2 Rocky Raccoon, B3 Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me & My Monkey, B4 Honey Pie, B5 Dear Prudence, B6 Revolution 9, B7 Good Night.
I find ATMP an easier exercise because I didn't grow up with it, whereas I have heard the White Album so much that it is difficult to imagine it a different way. Side 1 of the White Album especially I experience as a single unit so much that it is even hard to cut filler like Wild Honey Pie because it forms part of the overall experience, kind of like the ads on The Who Sell Out. I don't have the same attachment to ATMP so it is easier to detach the individual tracks from the overall experience.
Brent Hooton I totally get what you mean there. Personally, I discovered The Beatles and their solo albums around the same time, and All Things Must Pass is one of my all time favourite albums, so it would be challenging for me to cut some songs. That album is just so rich in content that it would be hard to cram the best stuff into one single LP.
Paul McShartney I’ve always thought ATMP cloud’ve made a positively perfect double album. Cut Apple Jam, I Dig Love and Isn’t It a Pity Version 2. The sheer volume and cohesion of the piece contributes to its awe, whereas The White Album really feels all over the place and thrown together, even if the songs are great within their own context.
Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp would have been another "Hit" for George if he had changed the title to something that radio would introduce it with...like "Let it Roll"
Yep, great track, great pathos and a great pickmeup, definitely the influence for Mr Blue Sky "take a go-o-od look round youuu" rather than 'day in the life' which is similar but not the one that Lynne emulated like everyone says it is
Just to clarify, Ringo didn't have a song on A Hard Days Night. All songs were by Lennon/McCartney (the only album) including George's lead vocal song I'm Happy Just to Dance with You.
I like Ringo's idea of splitting it into two separate releases. They were releasing albums it seems like every 8 months anyways. This would have allowed more time to add some depth to some of the songs, and allow all members to collaborate (if i recall a lot of the tracks on the white album were just recorded by one Beatle plus Ringo).
At first I thought these 'one' album versions were putting too many songs on each side. But then I checked the run time of the songs and was kind of shocked how short most of these songs are! Three less then 2 minutes! 16 run between 2:00-3:08 minutes. 10 between 3:13-4:45 minutes and only "Revolution 9" running 8:22 being a 'long' track. Damn, The Beatles were capable of making SO much great music using so little time!
He would’ve cut John, George and Ringo’s songs down and kept all of Paul’s schmaltz, which would’ve ended the Beatles right then. They would’ve faded into pop history. The songs Martin would’ve cut are the songs that led the Beatles into the Hard Rock era and basically created the Hard Rock era.
Never thought of this before seeing your video! Cool and difficult idea...but here's mine: Side 1: 1. Helter Skelter 2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 3. Yer Blues 4. Happiness is a Warm Gun 5. Birthday 6. Savoy Truffle 7. Julia Side 2: 1. Back in The U.S.S.R. 2. Dear Prudence 3. I'm So Tired 4. Blackbird 5. Mother Nature's Son 6. Glass Onion 7. Sexy Sadie 8. Good Night
At 0:47, he talks about a rite of passage for any serious Beatles fan to make one LP out of the White Album. Any serious Beatles fan would leave it alone and enjoy it.
I thought about this idea today and came up with this. In an alternate universe John and Paul decided that after Pepper, John would take more of a leading role than Paul. Since Pepper was a musical achievement, the next full album would be a poetic achievement. The album would be called, "Revolution" and would still have an all white cover to contrast Pepper. And the tracks are. Revolution 1 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da While My Guitar Gently Weeps Happiness is a Warm Gun Blackbird Don't Pass Me By Julia Yer Blues Mother Nature's Son Back in the USSR Revolution 9 I'm so Tired Can You Take Me Back? (Hidden Track) I left out all the other's because the lyrics of all don't relate to the narrative built in this new album, which is, to take a stance with both "Revolutions" bookending the album. At the beginning of side one, "Revolution 1" kicks us off by commanding action. "Ob-La-Di" responds by representing people who ignore it all and do what they want instead. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is exactly about that, watching the world pass as you sit and watch (also I'd prefer it to be the anthology version because personally it feels more meaningful). "Happiness is a Warm Gun" can be interpreted as an opinion on war. Blackbird retains its meaning concerning the Civil Rights Movement. "Don't Pass Me By" is a jaunty attention grabber that reminds you that their are problems that you shouldn't overlook, both with the title and the, would be, metaphorical story in the song about longing for love. Side two opens with "Julia", a letting go of the past and an acceptance of the future and the things you must do. "Yer Blues", parody or not, is screaming for anyone to listen. "Mother Nature's Son" is someone looking in the mirror and asking oneself, what am I going to do about it? "Back in the USSR" can be interpreted as almost an oblique future obscured by the catchy beat and delivery of the song. Which leads right into "Revolution 9", chaos. And then, the album ends with, "I'm so Tired", of all of this. And, "Can You Take Me Back?", to when I was a boy with my mother and there weren't any problems at all. I considered the amount of songs for each member. John and Paul have 2 each on side 1 and 3 each on side 2. George and Ringo have only 1 each on side 1, but in this alternate universe I made up in my head lol, I'd imagine Revolution 9 would be a more collective and more musical effort? So that it would involve George and Ringo more, giving them another song. And I'd even change it to "Revolution 11", with it being the 11th song. I know John has his thing with the 9 but, different universe lol. So yeah, that's my reinterpretation of "The White Album" as a single LP.
Spent quite a while on mine- I just listened through it and I think I'm finally happy. Side A: 1. Back In The USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Martha My Dear 4. Happiness Is A Warm Gun 5. Yer Blues 6. Revolution 1 7. I'm So Tired Side B: 1. Blackbird 2. Helter Skelter 3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4. Mother Nature's Son 5. I Will 6. Cry Baby Cry 7. Long, Long, Long
...I'm also dead against splitting the album up, or cut out stuff from it, but I have to say, you made amazing choices, and explained them so very well, and really created a great flow in your single album... respect, well done! :)
After thinking about it for some time, my tracklist for a White Album single LP would go like this: Side A 1 - Back In The USSR 2 - Dear Prudence 3 - Mother Nature Son 4 - Savoy Truffle 5 - Everybody Got Something to Hide 6 - I'm So Tired 7 - Happiness Is A Warm Gun Side B 8 - Helter Skelter 9 - Don't Pass Me By 10 - Yer Blues 11 - While My Guitar Gently Weeps 12 - Blackbird 13 - Julia 14 - Long long long
@@tonym994 I agree, best list from the comments. First person to cut "Martha My Dear" which sounds like a bad Broadway tune. Good job lol. Just needs a little tweaking to be perfect. Maybe take out "Everybody Got Something to Hide" and put in the hit song "Ob-La-Di" and "Glass Onion" . Have to keep "Don't Pass Me By" because Ringo has to have at least one song on every album. I might also take out "Savoy Truffle", but then Harrison would only have one song, and he always gets two per album so might as well keep it. Want to keep George happy.
A 1. Back In The USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4. Honey Pie 5. Yer Blues 6. Blackbird 7. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey B 1. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 2. Helter Skelter 3. Rocky Raccoon 4. Martha My Dear 5. Birthday 6. Cry Baby Cry 7. Good Night I know that Good Night only really works with Revolution 9, but it's a great closer (Can You Take Me Back ends too abrupt) and i wanted to have a Ringo song on here. I Will was a hard cut, but i already had enough Paul. And no, i can't leave Ob-La-Di off, and Honey Pie is one of my favorites.
I've taken more license with my track list, including some songs/edits left off of the final release and including more Harrison than normal. Less McCartney here as most of his songs on the White Album were either gimmicky or too music-hall for my taste (although I do make a reservation for Martha My Dear): Side 1 - 22 min Back in the USSR (McCartney) Dear Prudence (Lennon) While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Harrison) Blackbird (McCartney) Happiness Is a Warm Gun (Lennon) Martha My Dear (McCartney) Julia (Lennon) Side 2 - 24 min Helter Skelter (McCartney) Not Guilty (as included on Ultra Rare Trax, Vol. 4) (Harrison) Revolution Take 20 - mono (Lennon) Long Long Long (Harrison) edit of Can You Take Me Back? (hidden track after 30 secs of silence) (McCartney)
Which is why George could release a triple album right out the gate. He had such a backlog of songs that John and Paul rejected, some that were better than what were actually released.
Now making the White Album a single LP may seem hard, but what if you made a 30 track double LP that is a “Best Of” of every album from Please Please Me to Let It Be? That’s even tougher.
Lately I've been obsessed with creating my own version of The White Album. Here's the tracklist if anyone's curious: I call it The Off-White Album. (Note: This version obviously needs polishing for better transitions.) 1. Glass Onion 2. Happiness is a Warm Gun 3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4. I'm So Tired 5. Blackbird 6. Don't Pass Me By 7. I Will 8. Cry Baby Cry 9. Everybody's Got... 10. Yer Blues 11. Long, Long, Long 12. Dear Prudence 13. Mother Nature's Son 14. Julia
@@wienerschnitzel1739 Sorry 😬I don't mind the song, but it didn't quite seem to fit onto my fantasy album. I did feel guilty for the lack of McCartney tracks, so I added "Martha My Dear".
That is a really great choice of songs and order - in fact I'm going to put it together as a playlist! The other idea I'm sure you have heard before is to make a new "last" Beatles album from the first solo albums of the individual Beatles.
Should have made 3 albums: early 1968 psychedelic album with Glass Onion; what’s new Mary Jane; Martha Cry Baby; Next is India with all songs written in India. Christmas release to be straight rock with Yer Blues, Revolution, Back in USSR.
Side A: 1. Revolution (the hard-rocking single version) Great opener, really sets the tone 2. Dear Prudence 3. Glass Onion 4. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 5. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill 6. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 7. Happiness is a Warm Gun Running Time: Approx. 24 minutes Side B: 1. Yer Blues 2. Mother Nature's Son 3. Blackbird 4. Not Guilty-IMO the most egregious exclusion from the original album. Fits well here between all the acoustic numbers. Gives George his one song per side as well. 5. I'm So Tired 6. I Will 7. Helter Skelter 8. Cry Baby Cry-The 'Can You Take Me Back' ending really works to close the album. Running Time: Approx. 24 minutes
Great list!! I made this mix a few months ago with White Album tracks and singles from that era: SIDE ONE 1. Back in the USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Lady Madonna (single) 4. Blackbird 5. Happiness is a Warm Gun 6. Julia 7. While My Guitar Gently Weeps SIDE TWO 1. Revolution (single) 2. Mother Nature’s Son 3. Glass Onion 4. Helter Skelter 5. Long, Long, Long 6. Hey Jude (single)
@@ryandyer3466ight but if you think about it, he did sing Matchbox which was around the time of Hard Days Night. And Octopus’ Garden was originally intended for “Get Back”
Would've kept "Martha My Dear", one of my all-time faves. Yes, it was basically a McCartney solo track, but a lot of the tracks on the album were "solo tracks" by the various members. Otherwise, great choices!
My version: Side 1 1- Back In The USSR 2- Dear Prudence 3- Glass Onion 4- Wild Honey Pie 5- Everybody's Got Something To Hide... 6- I Will 7- Happiness Is A Warm Gun 8- Gently Weeps 9- Mother Nature's Son Side 2 1- Birthday 2- Martha My Dear 3- Don't Pass Me By 4- Savoy Truffle 5- Revolution (single version) 6- Blackbird 7- Honey Pie 8- Helter Skelter 9- Good Night (54 mins) Cheers from France!
I love this series! It’s great to see people still doing Beatles videos on RUclips! You should do something on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack, since the 50th anniversary is this year
If I had to do this, assuming I had this amount of time: Side A would ideally be a more happy side. Something like this: 1. Dear Prudence 2. Glass Onion 3. Savory Truffle 4. Martha my Dear 5. Everybody’s got Something to Hide 6. Mother Nature’s Son 7. Cry Baby Cry Side B would be little more dark, and would flow like this: 8. Helter Skelter 9. Happiness is a Warm Gun 10. Rocky Raccoon 11. While my Guitar Gently weeps. 12. I’m so Tired 13. Goodnight (not really dark but it’d be a nice “closer”) And then to top it off I’d have a segment of Why Don’t we Do it in the Road? as a hidden track you’d have to wait for similar to how Sabotage by Black Sabbath did it.
I like the core of your sequencing on side 1 but your opening and closing don’t work for me. Side 2 is much nicer and flows well. The hidden track idea is very original and I find it intriguing.
SIDE A 1. Back In The USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Glass Onion 4. Ob-La-Di 5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 6. Happiness Is A Warm Gun 7. Blackbird SIDE B 1. Helter Skelter 2. Julia 3. Everybody's Got STHEMAMM 4. Revolution 5. Savoy Truffle 6 Hey Jude
I enjoyed this not because he picked only songs I like (he didn't) but demonstrates how packed with good songs this album really is. It's not just genius sequencing; nearly all the songs of TWA really stand up in whatever order you choose.
Well, now I have to go listen to the White Album and make my own version. Really good video! Even though I definitely had to disagree due to my own personal favorites, I loved hearing your reasons and it's clear you put a lot of thought into your picks.
Nice job. You had me right up until the very end. Cry Baby Cry needs to go in favor of Long Long Long (George is my favorite Beatle). Also, Goodnight is a perfect album closer and Ringo's allotted time in the spotlight. By the way. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is also one of my all time favorite songs.
@@scratchesofbaseball I've loved the Beatles since 1983. Okay, for balance: I love the jangly guitar tone, the counterpoint to the melody. I always wondered how they got that sound. Guitar effects weren't advanced at the time, so i wonder if it's simply multi tracked to give that Chorus FX kind of sound. I think i was harsh calling I Will "Maccafluff", it's nice, and i do mean nicey-nice lol but those guitar parts are gorgeous.
@@scratchesofbaseball It's NICE. If we go straight for hyperbole like that, to describe every little thing (dont mean the beatles track lol) what's left to describe George's solo on Hey Bulldog, Old Brown Shoe, or the reaching for the stratosphere right at end of Dear Prudence:...."wont you come out to play"...(bleep bleep buh bleep a bleep deep deep....fades into the deep blue silence) it sounds like a harmonic plucked then jiggle on/off switch super quick a la Pete Townshend. I think George played like he was on acid. When it was a bad trip and he couldnt get it together he was hesitant and prone to fluffing notes. When he got it together he was just so exquisitely tasteful, had this awareness of the space between the notes, some of his solos had the mark of a master craftsman like Til There Was You, Fixing a Hole...i could name so many others. Sheez i hate it when people slag the Beatles. People have to learn to listen out of the box so to speak. Tune to a different frequency. You a guitarist brother? I been playing since '82 and bass since '88. Started learning by ear listening to Harrison and Marvin (Shadows)
Here's my take: SIDE ONE: 1. Back in the USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Rocky Raccoon 4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 5. Piggies 6. Happiness is a Warm Gun 7. Julia SIDE TWO: 1. Helter Skelter 2. Don't Pass Me By 3. Blackbird 4. Cry Baby Cry 5. Glass Onion 6. Birthday 7. Goodnight I was going to include Hey Jude, but It seemed too long.
Been a long time since I made an alternate White Album mix but the closest-to-done version of Not Guilty is on Anthology 3, and I found that Hey Jude is an excellent follow up for that song!
weird, i think Yer Blues is the only song on the album I actually dislike. If I could have a 15 track LP my tracks in original album order would be:- Back In The USSR Dear Prudence Glass Onion Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill While My Guitar Gently Weeps Martha My Dear Blackbird Rocky Raccoon I Will Birthday Mother Nature's Son Helter Skelter Revolution 1 Honey Pie
My list seems a bit confusing and nonsensical when you first look at it (giving up tracks like Happiness is a Warm Gun and Glass Onion), but it ultimately feels like the perfect album for me personally. Happiness seemed a bit too close to I'm So Tired in its last third and I couldn't find room for Glass Onion. Mother Nature's Son has never been a personal favorite of mine. 1. Back in the U.S.S.R 2. Dear Prudence 3. Martha My Dear 4. I'm So Tired 5. I Will 6. Don't Pass Me By 7. Julia 8. Helter Skelter 9. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 10. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill 11. Savoy Truffle 12. Yer Blues 13. Blackbird 14. Goodnight
They weren't going to put in a song with so many personal shots at them ('upsetting the Apple cart...for getting in your way, on the road to Mandalay.")
The two things I changed in my digital Beatles playlist is getting Honey Pie / Mother Nature's Son out and Hey Jude and Lady Madonna in, and replacing the album version of Revolution 1 with the single version. If and how it would fit on a double vinyl album that way I really don't care. As I didn't want to buy the mono version , I copied it into an 80 minutes single CD-R, that's no trouble at all except if you like to have it complete as it runs a few minutes longer then 80. So the question is rather how to fit a double album into a single CD, what tracks will be left out? Most will say Revolution 9 as you do, but not me.By the way, Not Guilty got included in the Let It Be section on my 197 track Beatles playlist.
I believe in order to not belittle the cut tracks in single LP versions of White, the album designer should make another album (I called mine A Doll’s House as a reference to an older name for the white album) with all the cut tracks. This extra album should still have effort put into the track order. For bonus points you can combine the two albums and add some singles to make a ‘deluxe’ kinda thing.
I find it somewhat odd that you cut Martha My Dear because it sounded too much like a solo McCartney song, yet keep his two solo contributions to TWA - Blackbird and Mother Nature's Son.
A standard “rule” adopted by the Lennon-McCartney’s leadership was to leave to Harrison the 2/14 space of the album - at least from _Help!_ on… Since _Revolver_ already broke the rule (3/14), the following list goes further by including _all_ of the Hari-songs published in the double _White Album_ sɪᴅᴇ ᴏɴᴇ [ 01 ] Savoy Truffle 2' 54" [ 02 ] Martha My Dear 2' 28" [ 03 ] I’m So Tired 2' 03" [ 04 ] Everybody’s Got Something To Hide (Except Me And My Monkey) 2' 24" [ 05 ] Piggies 2' 04" [ 06 ] Cry Baby Cry 3' 02" [ 07 ] Dear Prudence 3' 55" sɪᴅᴇ ᴛᴡᴏ [ 01 ] Julia 2' 56" [ 02 ] While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4' 45" [ 03 ] Glass Onion 2' 17" [ 04 ] Blackbird 2' 18" [ 05 ] Long, Long, Long 3' 06" [ 06 ] Mother Nature’s Son 2' 48" [ 07 ] Happiness Is A Warm Gun 2' 44"
Your side 2 is radical and very intriguing. I wanted to dismiss it but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t work. Good job! Unfortunately, I can’t say the same thing about your side 1. I can’t get past your opener (probably the most crucial song on any album). It just doesn’t work IMO.
Interesting I guess... but excluding Back in the USSR and Helter Skelter while retaining the wretched Piggies, on side one no less.... Yeah that's a hard pass.
Actually I just tried to balance the duration of both sides; yet the first three tracks are somehow related to the beginning of _Revolver_ (1. Harrison · 2. McCartney · 3. Lennon).
I did: Side one - 01: Dear Prudence 02: Rocky Raccoon 03: I'm So Tired 04: Julia 05: Blackbird 06: Don't Pass Me By 07: Glass Onion 08: Happiness Is A Warm Gun Side two - 01: Back in the U.S.S.R. 02: Savory Truffle 03: Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey 04: Helter Skelter 05: Wild Honey Pie 06: While My Guitar Gently Weeps 07: Yer Blues 08: Good Night
Abso-effing-lutely! Underappreciated and one of my favorites. I've always found it to be mixed way too low compared to the other tracks though. Maybe that's been remedied in the latest new mixes but I've always had to turn up the volume when Long Long Long comes on.
ok for side 1 would keep the first 2 opening trakcs, those are pretty much perfect as is. I cut oblad obalda and replaced it with dont pass me by because their very similar songs and dont pass me by is better. following that up is the same one two grand slam of while my guitar gently weeps and happiness is a warm gun, those 2 just go together so well that I couldnt seperate them. after that I would have blackbird to pick up the mood and have julia to end side one, such a haunting melody. I would open side 2 with martha my dear and imediatly flatten the cheery tone it created with yer blues. sexy sady would come in after word, keeping the somber tone while dialing it down a little. after that I would place mother natures son and Long Long Long both fantastic minimalistic songs from paul and george. cry baby cry would follow it up, which would be the thrid slow song in a row though a more depressing one. at the moment you might be the most relaxed I would put helter skelter and put goodnight as the closer, because they just compliment eachother so well. I will say it hurt alot to cut revolution 1 and abladi oblada
This was the first time I watched one of your videos. I really appreciate that thought put into your picks versus a “these are my favorite tracks” mindset. You earned a new subscriber!
Making The White Album as a single LP just sounds unfathomable one of the reasons the reasons the Beatles self-titled 1968 album worked so well as a double LP, was the variety of different genres. But if I were to release a single LP version White Album it would go like this: Side 1 1. Back in the U.S.S.R./ Dear Prudence 2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 3. Happiness Is A Warm Gun 4. Yer Blues 5. Helter Skelter 6. Martha My Dear 7. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey Side 2 1. Juila 2. Don't Pass Me By 3. Savoy Truffle 4. Blackbird 5. Glass Onion 6. Birthday 7. Cry Baby Cry
Craig Willis 1. Back in the U.S.S.R 2. Dear Prudence 3. Mother Nature's Son 4. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and my Monkey 5. While my Guitar Gently Weeps 6. Happiness is a Warm Gun 7. I'm So Tired 8. Yer Blues 9. Revolution 1 10. I Will 11. Julia 12. Blackbird 13. Helter Skelter 14. Long, Long, Long 15. Can You Take Me Back (Secret Track)
Thank you for making such a well produced video of a rare niche in Beatles lore. I compiled my own list over 10 years ago, and I will come back and share it with you. Your reasons for your choices seem well thought out and very well expressed. I truly enjoyed your video. Keep Beatle-ing!
Great playlist! Here’s mine: Side A: 1. Back In The USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4. Don’t Pass Me By 5. Glass Onion 6. Blackbird 7. Julia Side B: 1. Helter Skelter 2. Savoy Truffle 3. Everybody’s Got Something To Hide... 4. Mother Nature’s Son 5. Sexy Sadie 6. I Will 7. Cry Baby Cry
Personally, i would keep "Good Night" as last song and cut off "I Will". And with the rest of the songs that you left out i would release them in another album called "Black album". Nice vid btw
I really enjoyed this video. A buddy of mine and I did this once and I forget exactly which songs we cut but it was a fun little experiment. Keep it up!
I don't think I could leave Sexy Sadie and Long, Long, Long out. Anyway, this album is so good yet too long and that makes it difficult to listen from the first to the last song.
I'm sitting here trying to pick between these two songs, and I only have one space left. It's not until you sit down and try to get rid of songs do you realise just how great the record works as a whole
Long Long Long, there is no way I'd leave that off, it is one of the most beautiful Beatles tracks, it's often overlooked but once it catches you, you're hooked.
Another fantastic video. I've kinda fell off the vinyl train lately. Recently brought a car and still trying to stable out my income. Love hearing about vinyl from another user who enjoys it just as much as I do. Keep up the great work.
Spoilers Side A: 1. Back in the USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Rocky Raccoon 4. Everybody’s got Something... 5. Mother’s Nature’s Son 6. Happiness is a Warm Gun 7. Julia Side B: 1. Helter Skelter 2. My Guitar Gently Weeps 3. I’m So Tired 4. Blackbird 5. Glass Onion 6. Cry Baby Cry 7. I Will
If the Lp had come out as a single, then by now the rest of it would have been issued as bonus tracks or an "Anthology 3" type thingy ! Many people miss the point of why this was a double album. 1. They had a 200 song contract that they wanted to whizz through. 2. They were the Beatles, they could do anything {Revolution 9 ?} 3. Never in the Beatles history had they had so many songs at one point ~ that an additional load never made the album makes it all the more remarkable {and they still had "Across the Universe" and "You know my name" }. A far cry from the Beatles for sale period. 4. George Martin had by this time become powerless to prevent the apprentices taking over the business. And they sort of resented the way the press had lionized him over his "Pepper" contribution. None of them ever speak about a 5th Beatle ! 5. Ringo was writing songs, so it became somewhat diplomatic for everyone to be represented in some way. Even Abbey Road crammed in lots of unfinished songs, plus "throwaways" of quality like "Her Majesty" {as did, eventually, "Let it be"}. 6. Dylan had done a double album. He was just one writer. 7. They had done almost as many songs the previous year but these were spread across an album, an EP and 3 singles plus 4 more that didn't come out until '69 and '70. 8. Most pertinent ~ regardless of George Martin's opinion that it should be whittled down to a single album, as this video and many others like it and the comments amply demonstrate, such a notion would be impossible. It simply is not possible to make one good single album out of this fantastic wealth of material. It had to and has to remain a double. Trying to make a single album out of this lot is like trying to decide which of your children you should give away because the neighbours complain about the noise !
Mine would go: 1. Happiness is a Warm Gun 2. Mother Nature’s Son 3. Cry Baby Cry 4. Martha My Dear 5. Blackbird 6. Back in the USSR 7. Dear Prudence 8. Yer Blues 9. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 10. Helter Skelter 11. Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me 12. Revolution 1 13. I Will 14. Julia 15. Long, Long, Long
My single White Album LP would be - Side A: 1. Back in the USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Glass Onion 4. I Will 5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 6. Happiness is a Warm Gun 7. Blackbird 8. Rocky Raccoon Side B: 1. Birthday 2. Yer Blues 3. Mother Nature's Son 4. Sexy Sadie 5. Helter Skelter 6. Long, Long, Long 7. Cry Baby Cry
The double album gave the Beatles some cache that only an double LP could have provided . It’s also got those dark Charles Manson connections. 1968, Manson, the death of 1967 and the war. It’s the toughest, the creepiest, the best written and it long, creating a musical world the others didn’t quite capture. Goodnight at the end is creepy yet loving, brings the listener to a nice place, a warm place before checking out. The Beatles at their best filled with great songs. The so called filler sets the songs up for the mood and pace of the album. Favorite songs by each: George Harrison: Long Long Long While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Savoy Truffle and Piggies.. John Lennon: Glass Onion, Dear Prudence Happiness In Warn Gun. I’m so tired, Everybody’s Got Something To Hide, Sexy Sadie ,Revolution 1 and 9, Yer Blues, Cry Baby Cry, and Julia. Ringo: Goodnight (love that song), Paul: Back n the USSR, Rocky Raccoon, Blackbird, Happy Birthday, Mother Nature’s Son. Helter Skelter, Ob-la-di, Bungalow Bill, Martha My dear, Do it in the Road, Honey Pie. - Whew. Less filler on the White Album that just about any album in my option. If I had to say filler: Wild Homey Pie, and maybe Ringo’s Don’t Pass me Bye but I like it. I like Wild Honey Pie too. Let it Be has more filler. Earlier Beatles albums had some filler. I don.t rate Revolver as high as re- visionist listeners do. Rubber Soul is excellent. So is Beatles for Sale. Sgt. Peppers is very good with some tremendous songs She’s leaving home). A Hard Days Night is excellent. The While Album is their peak with Abbey Road right there because of the momentum of their best songwriting years. Now imaging if Hey Jude, Lady Madonna, Revelation, Hey Bulldog and Across the Universe has been included. Wow!
I wouldn't condense it to a single album. I think that all the songs, even the not-so-good ones like Don't Pass Me By and Revolution 9, still belong in the album and make up it's whole, and I wouldn't listen to it any other way. Sure, it doesn't flow amazingly, and it's a bit inconsistent at times, but that's all just part of the experience.
Nessi Well worded!! "that's part of the experience of it." The unevenness of it. Some songs flow, some don't. It was the Beatle's version of what being openminded musically meant, instead of going with the grain they went slightly against it with a few commercial type of songs thrown in for good measure.
So much great stuff-Mother Nature's Son-Julia-Dear Prudence-Helter Skelter-Happiness Is A Warm Gun-Yer Bues-Back In The USSR-Glass Onion no way could I make it a single album, but it was the first time they put several songs on that didn't cut it Revolution 9 -Wild Honey Pie-Bungalow Bill are the worst things they ever did.
*Vern Pascal* Revolution #9 was made for that double LP. The most revolutionary soundtrack from hell and once in a while definitely worth checking out (weirder than Floyd at the time). More interesting than many more mediocre pieces like Mother Natures son or Bungalow Bill that you mentioned. A real experiment not a throw away thing like most 'artists' work as they pad out albums. I get why you don't like it however..
1. Helter Skelter 2. Revolution 1 3. Sexy Sadie 4. Hapiness Is A Warm Gun 5. Dear Prudence 6. Honey Pie 1. Rocky Racoon 2. Martha My Dear 3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4. Yer Blues 5. Glass Onion 6. Good Night Between Glass Onion and Good Night would be a better transition with the violin.
I think it was perfect the way it is.. The simple concept of it, plain white jacket.. Because of the number of songs, it took a while to really digest it. So it remained 'new' for a very long time. It's what they did, and where they were at the time. Paul especially took a great interest in the cueing list of the songs. I guess it's fun to do 'what if's, etc. But as Mr. Spock once said, "It's not wise to indulge in idle speculation."
Sexy Sadie and Long,Long,Long are way too good to let go -- keeping I'm so tired, mother nature's son, Rocky Raccoon makes the album seem too safe and predictable, this factor is what they defied which made Abbey road stand out as a truly Beatles 'classic'
First of all, this discussion probably proves that this WAS better as a double LP: most of those who've posted here seem to think there was some filler, but they don't agree on which songs were the filler. If it were me, I would leave well alone, but if I HAD to vote a few off, they'd be: Wild Honey Pie, Blackbird, Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Yer Blues, and Mother Nature's Son. (Don't Pass Me By is enough of a curio to keep its place, and Everybody's Got Something To Hide..., while not a favourite, works perfectly to set up the magnificent next song). I decided to do an analysis of those who've posted so far (including me & my selections above). This is rather futile, since it took a couple of hours, and doubtless some new posts came on (and were missed by me) while I was counting. Just so you know, these were the posts I counted (and how many songs they oted to include): VinylRewind 14; WWE Figure Hunter 1; Jeffery Jones 14; Uncle Squiddz 14; JMad627 30; MrXO 30; The Joker 12; Στέφανος ΓΚΑΜΠΕΤΤΑ 14; "Paulina Angel PMI Records 16; 2003CPayne 14; JohnnyRadio 14; Craig Willis 15; Aaron Valles 15; Waffle Ninja 47 14; Adequate Emily 15; BrandonWalsh 12; Snowy 14; Ario Xenos 15; G Dad 14; Andrew Marco 13; Mike Walden 15; Les Cactus 15; Sergio Berumen 14; David Finch 14; Steve Conn 18; Pelger 14; Aweso 14; Prometheus Rising 16; Thenoosehangsfromheaven Supposedly 21; Steve Steele 27; Jamie Laszlo 15; The Smooth Criminal 14; VeryUs Mumblings 12; Jeremy Callahan 10; Harry J White 14; 3000MediaProductions 16; The MonsterCinemaProduction 14; The NeonChimp Channel 21; Ian Hubley 18; Robert S 14; Fantumh 15; La Pause Clope 18; JuanRetrofónico 16.5; The Fishoie Sky 15; LeeBeatles4Ever 7; The Rocking 16; DJ Kenter 14; Michael Oacholski 14; Patrick J Snape 15; John Haines 14; Steam Bois 16; Sandwichgod75 15; HalloweenJack95 17; The VinylVerse 16; BrutalMusic 14; BoboBrazil 19; dwgTeeVee 14; David Byrne 24; Eric Pereira 14; TheJST1968 25; Ben Lewis 12; me 25. I DIDN'T count people who merely endorsed (or suggested minor changes to) other people's selections, nor those who said "don't change the original", although this latter group wouldn't change the outcome, just the magnitude of the figures). Apologies for mis-copying some of these names - I was not originally going to post this comment, and so recorded them only to check for duplicates (there were none), and when I decided to comment it was too late at night to revisit the thread. Although I chose not to vote in anything that was not on the original album, I did count votes for those who did. But if anyone voted for the same song more than once, I counted it as only a single vote, even if it was for different versions (and I counted Revolution 1 and the "B" side Revolution to be the same song, just different versions). I included votes for Can You Take Me Back where this fragment was mentioned explicitly, although I consider it to be a part of either Cry Baby Cry or of Revolution #9. If someone suggested editing down a track, I counted it as only ½ a vote ... but two halves of course make a whole. My first thought was that a lot of people had excluded Sexy Sadie, and that you couldn't really take those people seriously. Only counting the 23 voters who didn't make that error, the ranking of songs chosen was as follows, with the number of people voting to include each one shown to the left (the dotted line shows roughly where the 'cut' would fall if selecting a single album): 23 While My Guitar Gently Weeps 23 Happiness Is a Warm Gun 23 Sexy Sadie 22 Helter Skelter 20 Dear Prudence 20 Blackbird 18 Back in the U.S.S.R. 16 Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey 15 Julia 15 Mother Nature's Son 15 Revolution 1 14 Yer Blues 13 Martha My Dear 13 I Will 13 Good Night -------------------------- 12 Glass Onion 12 I'm So Tired 11 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 11 Birthday 11 Cry Baby Cry 10 Piggies 10 Rocky Raccoon 10 Why Don't We Do It in the Road? 10 Long, Long, Long 10 Savoy Truffle 9 The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill 9 Don't Pass Me By 8 Honey Pie 3½ Revolution 9 3 Wild Honey Pie 3 Not Guilty 1 Can You Take Me Back 1 Hey Jude If you include ALL 62 of the posters listed above, this is the order of preferences: 57 While My Guitar Gently Weeps 57 Happiness Is a Warm Gun 55 Dear Prudence 54 Helter Skelter 52 Back in the U.S.S.R. 52 Blackbird 46 Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey 38 Julia 38 Mother Nature's Son 37 Yer Blues 35 I'm So Tired 33½ Revolution 1 [includes 7-9 votes for the single version] 31 Cry Baby Cry 30 Glass Onion ----------------------------- 29 Rocky Raccoon 29 Savoy Truffle 27 I Will 26 Birthday 25 Martha My Dear 24 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da [includes 1 vote for Anthology version] 24 Long, Long, Long 24 Good Night 23 Sexy Sadie 22 Don't Pass Me By 18 Piggies 15 Why Don't We Do It in the Road? 14 The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill 14 Honey Pie 9 Revolution 9 7 Wild Honey Pie 6 Hey Jude 5 Not Guilty 3 Can You Take Me Back 2 What's The New Mary Jane? 1 Lady Madonna 1 Junk 1 All Things Must Pass 1 Yello Submarine 1 Temporary Secretary 1 Carnival Of Light 1 You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) 1 Wedding Album [John & Yoko, excerpt] 1 4'33" (John Cage cover) 1 Sour Milk Sea

@flemit35 let it be album is great what do you mean?

WWE Figure Hunter Wow a 2-hour album full of sounds
My favorite!!
I actually don’t mind the “song”
WWE Figure Hunter the only correct answer

I’m very surprised that so many people have left Honey Pie off of their albums, I think it’s one of the best songs on the White Album.
Agreed Honey Pie is a great song
I think the White Album is perfect, but if it were to be changed I think it would make a better triple LP than a single LP
Too make it even more tiresome?
steve conn The Beatles are never tiresome
Finally someone in their right mind, I agree totally! And that would've been completely possible if they had included the Yellow Submarine songs and the singles.
Yusef Khalil Yes, the white album also had several outtakes that could’ve been included (Not Guilty, Junk, What’s The New Mary Jane?, etc.) and it could’ve given Hey Jude and Revolution a home on an album
steve conn your mom's tiresome!
Yer Blues is unbelievable underrated
JUST LISTEN TO THE DRUMS
you're welcome
Ry L thanks for letting us know it’s not like it’s been out for 50 years + but thank you anyways
Any excuse to use that stupid term. I am 66 and you are way off base, son.
Hey Ryder, Bought it when it came out. How old are you?
Funny, I took this to be like "You guys don't know what "Yer Blues" drums sound like". Dude, I could play every note of Ringo's drum parts since 1971. I practiced it until it was the same as Ringo's (For fun)! I'm glad you're diggin' it, Ryder. Listen to the drums on "Helter Skelter".
I can’t stand the cut at the end of the song. I like The Dirty Macs version better
I've made many versions of a single white album playlist. Here's the latest one I've thrown together:
Side One:
1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Everybody's Got Something to Hide...
4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5. Revolution 1
6. I Will
7. Julia
Side Two:
1. Helter Skelter
2. Martha My Dear
3. Don't Pass Me By
4. Sexy Sadie
5. Mother Nature's Son
6. Happiness is a Warm Gun
7. Blackbird
Jeffery Jones that's a damn good set of choices. Not sure I'd change much.
I can't believe the Geek forgot about Martha My Dear, thats a necessity.
Good list
Very good flow to side 1. I like it! I think side 2 doesn’t work as well though.
Make "Happiness" the closer and Blackbird before and you have a winner. The closer must be a strong group performance in my view.
Brady Whooping I agree
For mine I put Guitar Gently Weeps after USSR/Prudence for a McCartney-Lennon-Harrison opening to the album.
The most innovative, eclectic, chilling, mysterious, haunting, and profound album ever made!
Well put.

Blackbird

Side 2:
Julia
Yer blues

Never really thought about doing my own single LP version of the White Album. Just listened to your Spotify playlist and I like it! Good explanations for your choices too.
But, in Paul McCartney's own words "It's the Beatles, it's the bloody White Album, leave it alone".
Peace...
This was very effective because you showed just how difficult this task is. If you’re a big Beatles fan you have to give up a significant number of songs of that you love to condense it down to one album. I think my version would look extremely similar but I would slot sexy Sadie in for cry baby cry. I couldn’t live without sexy Sadie.
If you cut the filler, it would be a single album.
Removing Sexy Sadie is criminal
It' Maharishi
@@cynthiasmith2098 Sexy Maharishi
its one of the best beatles song
Yer blues is a masterpiece
Interesting, I find it the one of the weakest tracks. Too much a standard blues, not enough 'Beatles' for me.
It's perfect in and of itself.
judethedude96 I always thought yer blues was one of the top best tracks on the album
That said though, here would be my 1 album track list:
A1 Yer Blues, A2 Savoy Truffle, A3 The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, A4 Sexy Sadie, A5 Why Don’t We Do It In The Road, A6 Helter Skelter, A7 Happiness Is A Warm Gun, A8 I Will
B1 Piggies, B2 Rocky Raccoon, B3 Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me & My Monkey, B4 Honey Pie, B5 Dear Prudence, B6 Revolution 9, B7 Good Night.
This video’s really interesting! I’d love to see you do this with other albums like George’s ‘All Things Must Pass’!
The sheer volume and cohesion of the piece contributes to its awe, whereas The White Album really feels all over the place and thrown together, even if the songs are great within their own context.
a lot of that 3rd LP could be removed...but yea, that would be another interesting one to tackle
Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp would have been another "Hit" for George if he had changed the title to something that radio would introduce it with...like "Let it Roll"
I'd keep Savoy Truffle. It grew on me as one of my favorites. I didn't appreciate it as a kid. And no way would I remove Birthday, it rocks.
It’s the most underrated song on the album.
you lost me at "Martha My Dear"
Agreed, that's a great track that does so much in a short song. Great composition and arrangement.
Yep, great track, great pathos and a great pickmeup, definitely the influence for Mr Blue Sky "take a go-o-od look round youuu" rather than 'day in the life' which is similar but not the one that Lynne emulated like everyone says it is
agreed, scrap glass onion
glennc100 no the guy in the video had songs I would drop before glass onion but Martha my dear needs to be on there too
He lost me at Don't Pass Me By. And then Yer Blues. And then Sexy Sadie.
Just to clarify, Ringo didn't have a song on A Hard Days Night. All songs were by Lennon/McCartney (the only album) including George's lead vocal song I'm Happy Just to Dance with You.
These are the questions that keep me up at night
Valiant effort! But running through the songs you left off is just another example of why this had to be a double album.
exactly
We could all make our own version but I could never take this apart. An album best heard in its entirety, in track order.
New to your channel, took all of 30 seconds to subscribe, great video!
What I would LOVE to find out is what would George Martin have picked!
George would've made it into an EP, with Wild Honey Pie and Piggies on side A, and Revolution 9 on the flip side.

I left out all the other's because the lyrics of all don't relate to the narrative built in this new album, which is, to take a stance with both "Revolutions" bookending the album.
This is actually amazing
Very cool idea for an alternative white album. You could still put all the cut songs on another one and have Revolution as a seperate concept
Spent quite a while on mine- I just listened through it and I think I'm finally happy.
Side A:
1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Martha My Dear
4. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
5. Yer Blues
6. Revolution 1
7. I'm So Tired
Side B:
1. Blackbird
2. Helter Skelter
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4. Mother Nature's Son
5. I Will
6. Cry Baby Cry
7. Long, Long, Long
...I'm also dead against splitting the album up, or cut out stuff from it, but I have to say, you made amazing choices, and explained them so very well, and really created a great flow in your single album... respect, well done! :)
After thinking about it for some time, my tracklist for a White Album single LP would go like this:
Side A
1 - Back In The USSR
2 - Dear Prudence
3 - Mother Nature Son
4 - Savoy Truffle
5 - Everybody Got Something to Hide
6 - I'm So Tired
7 - Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Side B
8 - Helter Skelter
9 - Don't Pass Me By
10 - Yer Blues
11 - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
12 - Blackbird
13 - Julia
14 - Long long long
not bad. not bad at all. I'm a 'Glass Onion' guy, but not here to be picky.
A
1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4. Honey Pie
5. Yer Blues
6. Blackbird
7. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
B
1. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
2. Helter Skelter
3. Rocky Raccoon
4. Martha My Dear
5. Birthday
6. Cry Baby Cry
7. Good Night
I know that Good Night only really works with Revolution 9, but it's a great closer (Can You Take Me Back ends too abrupt) and i wanted to have a Ringo song on here. I Will was a hard cut, but i already had enough Paul. And no, i can't leave Ob-La-Di off, and Honey Pie is one of my favorites.
As Paul himself has said "It's the Beatles White Album, SHUT UP" The LP is fine as is.
I've taken more license with my track list, including some songs/edits left off of the final release and including more Harrison than normal. Less McCartney here as most of his songs on the White Album were either gimmicky or too music-hall for my taste (although I do make a reservation for Martha My Dear):
Side 1 - 22 min
Back in the USSR (McCartney)
Dear Prudence (Lennon)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Harrison)
Blackbird (McCartney)
Happiness Is a Warm Gun (Lennon)
Martha My Dear (McCartney)
Julia (Lennon)
Side 2 - 24 min
Helter Skelter (McCartney)
Not Guilty (as included on Ultra Rare Trax, Vol. 4) (Harrison)
Revolution Take 20 - mono (Lennon)
Long Long Long (Harrison)
edit of Can You Take Me Back? (hidden track after 30 secs of silence) (McCartney)
This should not even be a question! The White Album is perfect as it is.
The cardinal rules of Beatles albums were that George got two cuts per LP and Ring got at least one solo vocal.
(Note: This version obviously needs polishing for better transitions.)
1. Glass Onion
2. Happiness is a Warm Gun
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4. I'm So Tired
5. Blackbird
6. Don't Pass Me By
7. I Will
8. Cry Baby Cry
9. Everybody's Got...
10. Yer Blues
11. Long, Long, Long
12. Dear Prudence
13. Mother Nature's Son
14. Julia
This is amazing dude!
No Helter Skelter? 😭
@@wienerschnitzel1739 Sorry 😬I don't mind the song, but it didn't quite seem to fit onto my fantasy album. I did feel guilty for the lack of McCartney tracks, so I added "Martha My Dear".
I agree with you on “Good Night”.
Side A:
1. Revolution (the hard-rocking single version) Great opener, really sets the tone
2. Dear Prudence
3. Glass Onion
4. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
5. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
6. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
7. Happiness is a Warm Gun
Running Time: Approx. 24 minutes
Side B:
1. Yer Blues
2. Mother Nature's Son
3. Blackbird
4. Not Guilty-IMO the most egregious exclusion from the original album. Fits well here between all the acoustic numbers. Gives George his one song per side as well.
5. I'm So Tired
6. I Will
7. Helter Skelter
8. Cry Baby Cry-The 'Can You Take Me Back' ending really works to close the album.
Running Time: Approx. 24 minutes
Nice touch with the "Can You Take Me Back" at the end of side 2. (It's the 31st song on the original LP.)
Thanks!
Great list!!
I made this mix a few months ago with White Album tracks and singles from that era:
SIDE ONE
1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Lady Madonna (single)
4. Blackbird
5. Happiness is a Warm Gun
6. Julia
7. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
SIDE TWO
1. Revolution (single)
2. Mother Nature’s Son
3. Glass Onion
4. Helter Skelter
5. Long, Long, Long
6. Hey Jude (single)
I just realized Ringo sang lead on exactly one song per record, including each record of the white album.
Other than “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Let It Be.”
@@ryandyer3466ight but if you think about it, he did sing Matchbox which was around the time of Hard Days Night. And Octopus’ Garden was originally intended for “Get Back”
And the magical mystery tour.
@@akadventuringI suppose soundtrack albums don't count.
I could never cut enough songs to make it into a single album. They're just too good. I'd leave the White album exactly as it is.
You are the hottest woman in the world. How does it feel? Discuss!
Would've kept "Martha My Dear", one of my all-time faves. Yes, it was basically a McCartney solo track, but a lot of the tracks on the album were "solo tracks" by the various members. Otherwise, great choices!
This is your first video I ever watched JUST NOW and right away I am blown by your dedication with the set and the outfit! Keep it up!
Good Night is my favorite song on the White Album.
My version:
Side 1
1- Back In The USSR
2- Dear Prudence
3- Glass Onion
4- Wild Honey Pie
5- Everybody's Got Something To Hide...
6- I Will
7- Happiness Is A Warm Gun
8- Gently Weeps
9- Mother Nature's Son
Side 2
1- Birthday
2- Martha My Dear
3- Don't Pass Me By
4- Savoy Truffle
5- Revolution (single version)
6- Blackbird
7- Honey Pie
8- Helter Skelter
9- Good Night
(54 mins)
Cheers from France!
LOVE THE BEATLES
I love this series! It’s great to see people still doing Beatles videos on RUclips! You should do something on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack, since the 50th anniversary is this year
If I had to do this, assuming I had this amount of time:
Side A would ideally be a more happy side. Something like this:
1. Dear Prudence
2. Glass Onion
3. Savory Truffle
4. Martha my Dear
5. Everybody’s got Something to Hide
6. Mother Nature’s Son
7. Cry Baby Cry
Side B would be little more dark, and would flow like this:
8. Helter Skelter
9. Happiness is a Warm Gun
10. Rocky Raccoon
11. While my Guitar Gently weeps.
12. I’m so Tired
13. Goodnight (not really dark but it’d be a nice “closer”)
And then to top it off I’d have a segment of Why Don’t we Do it in the Road? as a hidden track you’d have to wait for similar to how Sabotage by Black Sabbath did it.
love the hidden track idea
Vinyl Rewind that song is so funny I feel it’d be a perfect hidden track.
I like the core of your sequencing on side 1 but your opening and closing don’t work for me. Side 2 is much nicer and flows well. The hidden track idea is very original and I find it intriguing.
William Henderson thanks. I didn't listen to this before posting it so I didn't know how well it'd flow.
That'd be a good hidden track, so would Revolution 9 I think, either would be great
SIDE A
1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Glass Onion
4. Ob-La-Di
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
6. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
7. Blackbird
SIDE B
1. Helter Skelter
2. Julia
3. Everybody's Got STHEMAMM
4. Revolution
5. Savoy Truffle
6 Hey Jude
Agreed. Beatles albums should end with something epic. I Will is a bit of MaccaFluff
@@uberbeast113 honestly I think I Will is in my top 5 Beatles songs but it is literally a McCartney solo track
@@uberbeast113 The guitar is phenomenal
Here's my take:
SIDE ONE:
1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Rocky Raccoon
4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5. Piggies
6. Happiness is a Warm Gun
7. Julia
SIDE TWO:
1. Helter Skelter
2. Don't Pass Me By
3. Blackbird
4. Cry Baby Cry
5. Glass Onion
6. Birthday
7. Goodnight
I was going to include Hey Jude, but It seemed too long.
Personally I think any mix without Yer Blues or Long, Long, Long needs some tweaking 😉 but good job!
Yeah, Yer Blues is one of the best.
Been a long time since I made an alternate White Album mix but the closest-to-done version of Not Guilty is on Anthology 3, and I found that Hey Jude is an excellent follow up for that song!
Personally I think wishing that any song were removed from The White Album requires a stay in a mental facility.
weird, i think Yer Blues is the only song on the album I actually dislike. If I could have a 15 track LP my tracks in original album order would be:-
Back In The USSR
Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Martha My Dear
Blackbird
Rocky Raccoon
I Will
Birthday
Mother Nature's Son
Helter Skelter
Revolution 1
Honey Pie
My list seems a bit confusing and nonsensical when you first look at it (giving up tracks like Happiness is a Warm Gun and Glass Onion), but it ultimately feels like the perfect album for me personally. Happiness seemed a bit too close to I'm So Tired in its last third and I couldn't find room for Glass Onion. Mother Nature's Son has never been a personal favorite of mine.
1. Back in the U.S.S.R
2. Dear Prudence
3. Martha My Dear
4. I'm So Tired
5. I Will
6. Don't Pass Me By
7. Julia
8. Helter Skelter
9. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
10. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
11. Savoy Truffle
12. Yer Blues
13. Blackbird
14. Goodnight
The White album is definitely a gem as a double album!
I wouldn't change one single thing aside from taking "Revolution 9" out and replacing it with George's "Not Guilty".
They weren't going to put in a song with so many personal shots at them ('upsetting the Apple cart...for getting in your way, on the road to Mandalay.")
steve conn You know I never really looked too hard at the lyrics of this song , and you may have a point. As for me I kinda personally like the song.
no leave revolution 9, i actually like it, it's unique , take out wild honey pie for no guilty
The two things I changed in my digital Beatles playlist is getting Honey Pie / Mother Nature's Son out and Hey Jude and Lady Madonna in,
and replacing the album version of Revolution 1 with the single version.
Most will say Revolution 9 as you do, but not me.By the way, Not Guilty got included in the Let It Be section on my 197 track Beatles playlist.
i would've replaced Rev 9 with Hey Jude
I believe in order to not belittle the cut tracks in single LP versions of White, the album designer should make another album (I called mine A Doll’s House as a reference to an older name for the white album) with all the cut tracks. This extra album should still have effort put into the track order. For bonus points you can combine the two albums and add some singles to make a ‘deluxe’ kinda thing.
Or shelve the filler and include them on Anthology 4.
I actually created a topic on this a few years ago at the Led Zeppelin forum.
forums.ledzeppelin.com/topic/22300-the-beatles-white-album-redux/
I find it somewhat odd that you cut Martha My Dear because it sounded too much like a solo McCartney song, yet keep his two solo contributions to TWA - Blackbird and Mother Nature's Son.
A standard “rule” adopted by the Lennon-McCartney’s leadership was to leave to Harrison the 2/14 space of the album - at least from _Help!_ on…
Since _Revolver_ already broke the rule (3/14), the following list goes further by including _all_ of the Hari-songs published in the double _White Album_
sɪᴅᴇ ᴏɴᴇ
[ 01 ] Savoy Truffle 2' 54"
[ 02 ] Martha My Dear 2' 28"

[ 05 ] Piggies 2' 04"
[ 06 ] Cry Baby Cry 3' 02"
[ 07 ] Dear Prudence 3' 55"

[ 05 ] Long, Long, Long 3' 06"
[ 06 ] Mother Nature’s Son 2' 48"
[ 07 ] Happiness Is A Warm Gun 2' 44"
Your side 2 is radical and very intriguing. I wanted to dismiss it but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t work. Good job! Unfortunately, I can’t say the same thing about your side 1. I can’t get past your opener (probably the most crucial song on any album). It just doesn’t work IMO.
George was a better songwriter and musician than Paul IMO
Interesting I guess... but excluding Back in the USSR and Helter Skelter while retaining the wretched Piggies, on side one no less.... Yeah that's a hard pass.
Actually I just tried to balance the duration of both sides; yet the first three tracks are somehow related to the beginning of _Revolver_ (1. Harrison · 2. McCartney · 3. Lennon).
Indeed, “removing” _Back In The U.S.S.R._ was a hard choice - but as I said - this (very personal) list was deliberately George-based…
I did:
Side one -
01: Dear Prudence
02: Rocky Raccoon
03: I'm So Tired
04: Julia
05: Blackbird
06: Don't Pass Me By
07: Glass Onion
08: Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Side two -
01: Back in the U.S.S.R.
02: Savory Truffle
03: Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
04: Helter Skelter
05: Wild Honey Pie
06: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
07: Yer Blues
08: Good Night
Long, Long, Long is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded
Abso-effing-lutely! Underappreciated and one of my favorites. I've always found it to be mixed way too low compared to the other tracks though. Maybe that's been remedied in the latest new mixes but I've always had to turn up the volume when Long Long Long comes on.
ok
for side 1 would keep the first 2 opening trakcs, those are pretty much perfect as is.
1 Dear Prudence 2 Happiness..3 bungalow bill 4 Helter skelter 5 glass onion 6 I'm so tired 7 black bird 8 cry baby 9 wild honey... 10 guitar gently 11 piggies 12 sexy Sadie 13 do it in road 14 mother nature's... 15 birthday 16 julia
But if I were to release a single LP version White Album it would go like this:
Side 1
1. Back in the U.S.S.R./ Dear Prudence
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
4. Yer Blues
5. Helter Skelter
6. Martha My Dear
7. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey
Side 2
1. Juila
2. Don't Pass Me By
3. Savoy Truffle
4. Blackbird
5. Glass Onion
6. Birthday
7. Cry Baby Cry
Craig Willis
1. Back in the U.S.S.R
2. Dear Prudence
3. Mother Nature's Son
4. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and my Monkey
5. While my Guitar Gently Weeps
6. Happiness is a Warm Gun
7. I'm So Tired
8. Yer Blues
9. Revolution 1
10. I Will
11. Julia
12. Blackbird
13. Helter Skelter
14. Long, Long, Long
Great list, mine would be the same!
Great playlist! Here’s mine:
Side A:
1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4. Don’t Pass Me By
5. Glass Onion
6. Blackbird
7. Julia
Side B:
1. Helter Skelter
2. Savoy Truffle
3. Everybody’s Got Something To Hide...
4. Mother Nature’s Son
5. Sexy Sadie
6. I Will
7. Cry Baby Cry
Personally, i would keep "Good Night" as last song and cut off "I Will". And with the rest of the songs that you left out i would release them in another album called "Black album". Nice vid btw
great idea
I really enjoyed this video. A buddy of mine and I did this once and I forget exactly which songs we cut but it was a fun little experiment. Keep it up!
I don't think I could leave Sexy Sadie and Long, Long, Long out. Anyway, this album is so good yet too long and that makes it difficult to listen from the first to the last song.
Definitely would have left on Sexy Sadie.
Yeah I certainly would have Sexy Sadie on the record, but also Martha My Dear, I love the piano and arrangement of that track.
I'm sitting here trying to pick between these two songs, and I only have one space left. It's not until you sit down and try to get rid of songs do you realise just how great the record works as a whole
Ya, those were the two I thought about also!

Side B:
1. Helter Skelter
2. My Guitar Gently Weeps

If the Lp had come out as a single, then by now the rest of it would have been issued as bonus tracks or an "Anthology 3" type thingy !
Many people miss the point of why this was a double album.
1. They had a 200 song contract that they wanted to whizz through.
2. They were the Beatles, they could do anything {Revolution 9 ?}
Mine would go:
1. Happiness is a Warm Gun
2. Mother Nature’s Son
3. Cry Baby Cry
4. Martha My Dear
5. Blackbird
6. Back in the USSR
7. Dear Prudence
8. Yer Blues
9. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
10. Helter Skelter
11. Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me
12. Revolution 1
13. I Will
14. Julia
15. Long, Long, Long
My single White Album LP would be -
Side A:
1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence

Wow!
cachet ('cashay') is the word here, not cache ("cash") which means stash
Good job. Even more pleasant than the actual list was your explanation and thoughts you put into it. Will have a listen to the playlist soon.

Alright, let me just flip the recor-
*'Helter Skelter plays'*
*This is why you don’t let fans make records, kids*
If it was just 1LP we can def cut two songs right from the start. Wild Honey Pie and #9
I wouldn't condense it to a single album.
Odd... I like Bungalow Bill
I've tried to do this many times but I think the magic of the white album is that is an imperfect work of art, enjoyed this episode.
well said
1. Helter Skelter

Between Glass Onion and Good Night would be a better transition with the violin.
Your version is good yet it is mainly john
I think it was perfect the way it is.. The simple concept of it, plain white jacket.. Because of the number of songs, it took a while to really digest it. So it remained 'new' for a very long time. It's what they did, and where they were at the time. Paul especially took a great interest in the cueing list of the songs. I guess it's fun to do 'what if's, etc. But as Mr. Spock once said, "It's not wise to indulge in idle speculation."
Agh! Racoon and Mother Nature over Martha?! C'mon!
How do you know that name!?
What songs that you omitted from the white album would you put on the yellow submarine album in place of the George Martin orchestra section.
Only counting the 23 voters who didn't make that error, the ranking of songs chosen was as follows, with the number of people voting to include each one shown to the left (the dotted line shows roughly where the 'cut' would fall if selecting a single album):
23 While My Guitar Gently Weeps
23 Happiness Is a Warm Gun
23 Sexy Sadie
22 Helter Skelter
20 Dear Prudence
20 Blackbird

I love the White Album but I feel it would have made a lovely EP. I have removed most of the songs, but i feel its much better. Haha!
I think you should trim it down to a single 45.
@@michavandam good night
Here’s mine! I decided to have 17 tracks like a single disc of the album. I haven’t tested listening to it yet but I think this would flow pretty well and make a fantastic record.
