  • The church of St. Mary the Virgin in Clifton Reynes is a very interesting 800-year-old church with stunning table top tombs of knights who fought at the battle of Crecy 1346. The Reynes family owned vast estates in the area.
Check out the strange and rare wooden effigies. And bo the knight's dog sitting at his feet.
There is also an amazing font that dates back to 1385.

I love my country(the United States) and my heritage. Which happens to be from many different parts of Europe. With all of that said, I feel blessed to be able to have the ability to see such old things. So much historic, cultural, etc. We, of course don't have things this old. I believe the oldest things in my area, would be some graves from the 1700s.

The washing place next to the sedilia is called a piscina, and the lozenge shaped board at 10.45 is a funeral hatchment. The apparatus on the wall of the ringing chamber is for the Ellacomb chimes ,by which they can ring the bells by means of a series of leavers.

Very interesting.. Thank you for sharing 🌸 the bell ringers rules were quite strict! It shows that ringing the church bells was a privilege. Did you notice a date on them..? I couldn`t quite read the last three.. 🕊🕊

One of the ironic and sad elements in the English Reformation is that they took down all the images and statues and shrines to the Saints and replaced them with the funeral plaques of rich people. Not a bug. A feature.

The two brasses set in the floor beside the knight are not of nuns, they actually depict people within their shrouds. Spooky!

The lid to the font was pre-reformation, when the water was blessed at Easter and used throughout the year. The lid secured the font to stop the holy water from being stolen for questionable use.
