Use Photoshop to put a digital frame (mat) around your photos

- Hi, I'm Lisa Langell with Langell Photography, LLC. I like to put frames around my images when I post them to social media. The extra space allows me to add a title, copyright information, and even a short story underneath the image if I wish to do so.
My frames come in a variety of shapes, sizes, textures, colors, etc. The options are endless!
I often get asked how I accomplish this using Photoshop. Here is an example you may follow. From here, the creative options you develop for your own frames are limitless!

Hello, thx for the detailed explanation. Just wondering, how do you draw an inside thin border line without expanding or distracting the photo or canvas. Joust plain white line offset 1 inch from the edges. Thx

Great tutorial! If you were creating different sizes to sell do you have an easy way to crop with the borders on to different sizes? After you add the border to the 4x6 picture it is not a normal frame size any longer though, correct?

When clicking on Canvas, the color extension is grayed out sometimes - a lot of the time. Why? All I did was bring up an image, creat a duplicate, then when I click on Canvas (under Image), the color extension is not available?
Hi @Drumstorm1... it's difficult to do a tech troubleshoot via RUclips messages, but a few things come to mind:
1. Are you using an old version (or buggy version) of Photoshop?
2. Do you have a memory issue on your computer whereby you've used up your RAM and storage and thus it can sometimes be glitchy to do photoshop stuff? (Try a reboot but if that doesn't do it, check how much storage you have available on your hard drive and/or how much memory you are currently using when running the ap)
3. Did you select the top or bottom of the two layers? (Try the top one?)
4. Are you using the color selector on the actual Canvas pop-up window? Or the color in your color palate on the lower left side of your screen? (Use the one you can select in the pop-up)
If these things don't help, I would consider reaching out to PhotoShop / Adobe support or discussion forums for advice. I'm not equipped to dig deeper in this format :) Wishing you luck! :)

I don't understand how it is applying the beveling affect to the photo inside the frames. I am getting beveling on the outer, larger frame, not the inside photo. How do you get it to bevel the original photo?
Margaret Grace hello! Sorry I didn’t see this until today! I think what could be happening is that you may have not applied the bevel to the top layer. Try looking at which layer was selected when you applied the bevel. It should be the top one. Let me know if that works !

DJ Russell you may have to flatten the image and then duplicate the layer. Then go to Layer->Layer style-> Bevel & Emboss and choose bevel. That should work for you.
