  • Mark Allen, "The Grip," is a legendary American triathlete who dominated the late 1980s and 1990s through Zone 2 training and the MAF method by Dr. Phil Maffetone. His six consecutive Ironman World Championship titles from 1989 to 1995, including the famous "Iron War" victory over Dave Scott, showcased his exceptional endurance and ability to outlast his opposition. In this clip he shares how he learnt to run fast while maintaining a low heart rate.

Been using it for decades. Totally legit. Was able to have Dr. Maffetone give a tutorial to my staff (military).

Efficiency is the key, in everything. Usain Bolt 100m or Kipchoge 42.2.
Same way in swimming, and cycling.
There is a broad misunderstanding, or even missed information, how quick and efficient running come along together, no matter which disance.

Most people would benefit from using the MAF method as the max ceiling and try to keep it around 5 beats below that. Of course the best thing to do is a lactate and vo2 max lab test to determine where your LT1 and LT2 are. Slow it down and increase your weekly hours. You'll be tempted to run faster or finish with some threshold or sprints, DON'T! When you can't take it anymore, enter a 10k, half or marathon, if you don't PB, I'll eat my hat! 😉

When you can’t take it any more? 8 weeks? Longer?

so you would do the MAF training and in the race run as fast as you can ignoring the heart rate levels?

I think one reason the maf training conditions your body to be able to eventually after a few weeks, be able to keep the same heart rate yet have faster speed aerobically is due to fat burning enzymes becoming better developed. So while you're in zone 2 (still burning fat aerobically) the other guys are already heading into zone 3 (using up more glycogen anaerobically) at the same pace.

I think the body gets trained in a sustainable way. But still gets the training. Come race day it’s ready to deliver. Rinse and repeat.

I hate painful runs, call me useless. Sometimes training very hard has very diminishing returns. Long distance run has to be sustainable. So knowing your pace is very very important. And the central nervous system cannot take it.
