Lyrics:
(On my phone)
Time spent sitting all alone
Time spent looking at my phone
Time spent sitting all alone
Time spent looking at my phone
I try to pull the curtains back
Turn you off but can't detach
When all I want and all I know
Is time spent looking at my phone
(On my phone)
Find me when the lights go down
Signing in and signing out
Gods descend to take me home
Find me staring at my phone
I'm wondering where the hours went
As I'm losing consciousness
My sullen face is all aglow
Time spent looking at my phone
Last thing that you need
Is the new shiny feature
All the memories you've shared
Devoured by perverted creatures
Nothing can compete
With the first time you saw her
Passing strangers on the street
Spending every moment looking at their phones
(On my phone)
Time spent sitting all alone
Time spent looking at my phone
Time spent sitting all alone
Time spent looking at my phone
I call you, you don't call me back
Almost had a heart attack
I'm listening to the window moan
Time spent looking at my phone
Clouds are getting full
So you close all the windows
I would never let you die
Even if our love is ornamental
You know what you need
Is a way to remember
You can never find the time
If you spend everyday looking at your phone
You should come with me
We can lose ourselves in nothing
Copy faces from the feed
And then try to turn them into something
Even if you choose to believe that it's ending
You'll come back to me again
You can go ahead and stop pretending

“Nothing can compare with the first time you saw her.”
That line just hits different.
MGMT could make a song about literally any topic and it would still slap

More like it would still tslamp
I bet when they start doing documentaries of the 2010's, this will be one of the songs playing when they talk about the smart phone craze.
Nah, only positiive things will be said about the tech revolution unless we defeat the rulers of the world and stop their plan.
@Im Everywhere yup, that's the word for leaders in greece and the demonic entities of gnosticism, same word and same meaning. The truth is so often hidden in plain sight isnt it.

This is the third song I've ever heard from MGMT. I just discovered them earlier today. I am stunned at how layered their sound is. I can tell this band is different. These SOUNDS are different. This is fuckin good music. I'm so damn happy right now.
Best modern psychedelic band there is other than tame impala
I'm just thinking about all the people that have come and gone from my life, and how much they shaped who I am as a person, yet how little I actually cared about spending time with them; not because I they weren't important, but because we all were either under the impression that we would see each other another time and there was no need to celebrate time together, or that we knew every person we meet is temporary and there was no point in trying to keep up contact when ultimately every relationship gets severed. This song captures this nostalgia on a meta level, because its reminding me that I am basically also wasting time looking at a screen and writing what is basically a publicized diary entry to myself reminiscing about times I was in contact with other human beings, instead of actually talking to other humans.
Jared P damn dude that's deep
In the end, people need people. That's something no machine or computer can replace.

Man this hits my soul. I feel rich knowing these bands.
"Even though I know it's ending, I know you'll come back to me again." Addiction
this song is literally the most lyrically butchered song on this planet. How are these lyrics so hard to recite?
Incisive, honestly
Amazing chorus popping out of nowhere... what a bliss
mobbaddict I skipped the song within the first ten seconds when I first listened through and gave it a shot again and it came outta nowhere.
Yo ikr, first listen I had I thought it was nothing too special but that chorus came along and hooooly shit, now it's prob my fav of LDA
@@hydratheskygod6344 man it hit me the same way, heard it on the radio and didn’t think much until the chorus, listened to it again and it was amazing, chorus made this song man
I feel sorry for the people who did not discover this song. They'll never know what they missed.
They don’t spend enough time looking at their phone
Last thing that you need Is the new shiny feature..
I only discovered this song a week ago
this album is so good. it seems like every time I listen I have a new favorite track.

it's the perfect marriage of pop and postpostmodernism
It's NOT a question NOW!! My favorite album in 4 years.

'Nothing can compete with the first time you saw her' one of the most visceral, honest, and relatable verses in contemporary music. Thank you, Andrew & Ben.
I just love that electro-flamenco thingy at 2:56
Me too- it reminds me of Domino Dancing by The Pet Shop Boys

What an amazing album
I definitely have something special with this song, I can listen to it a dozen times per day. It's not about the lyrics (except for this line : “nothing can compete with the first time you saw her”) it's more about the feel of the melody, I don't no why but it helps me find some relief in my situation, it makes me think to a girl : I was talking to her on facebook during the last month we were talking to each other every day and we were getting very close, so we decided to meet each other in Paris (how romantic) because we both live close by. It was a good day for me, not fantastic because we were very shy and didn't talk that much, but a good day anyway. Apparently it wasn't for her because the next day she told me she was not feeling great and wanted to stop talking to me. I think she’s afraid because she never had a boyfriend before, so I decided to give her some time to think but I really don't want to let her go. I don't know what to do.
I have no idea why I'm posting this on youtube but I wanted to share my story and how this music make me feel. A big thank you if you read all my comment.
Good on you for giving her time to think, I hope everything turns out okay
Same here. And I think about him when I listen to this track too. The guy needs some time to think about it due to a bunch of reasons and I'm just dying inside because I don't want to lose him. Anyway I hope that everything gets really fine for you both. :)
(Sorry for my broken English)
Turns out she don't want to talk to me again. She said it's not my fault, it's her. She also said I could easily find someone great. But I want this girl not someone else.
Misao Maki If I can give you an advice, it's no good to put your happiness in the hand of someone else. Anyway, I hope he will come back.
Tell me when you will know his decision.
Your English is good, by that I mean not worse than mine haha!
Doriane Poiret Oh :( I don't even know what to say to you. This was so sad, I don't really know what to say. :(
I'll tell you when he answers. :) Thanks for your words!

Such a wonderful, bittersweet song. Love it, especially the chorus!
so 80's yet so millennial

My favorite on the album. It gets better with every listen.
Such a haunting vibe
I can imagine MGMT imagining Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius playing the opening of the track... definitely has the early 80's latin/jazz fusion vibe in the beginning... Ben, if not an actual admirer of Joe Zawinul, is treading very similar ground with these arrangements and piano sounds... there are a few other moments on the album where there is a strong 1970's Wendy Carlos influence... it's subtle but it's there. I'm really thankful that these tracks exist.
Never thought id see a fellow wp fan here...suh dude
The ending of this song is beautiful. I’ve never heard it until now because the rest of the song is not for me, but wow the ending sounds amazing
Maybe in my top 3 of the album, or I don't know, is just so good!

The time I spend listening to this on my phone
Everything about this song- the extremely precise detuning, stereo panning, reverb, counterpoint, and the lush, complex rhythm- is one of many pieces of evidence on this album that they absolutely busted their balls on this album. It was definitely worth the wait.
man this song is amazing. MGMT are awesome
This is my favorite one for sure.
I love how original and catchy at the same time this song is
Chorus makes me cry. Someone hug me
I like this album already by the first listen. It definitely has a soft cell, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, even a 80’s rnb influence to it. Definitely some type of synth pop, goth, rnb, alternative, rock sounding album. Awesome stuff, this type of experimentation for some may be to much, but for me I just see it as MGMT pushing the boundaries of music in the modern age by taking influences of the past. Awesome!
I'm defiantly hearing Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode (from back when they were much more industrial), and Soft Cell vibes. The album is also reminding me of Duran Duran and The Cure. It's like they took the best of each of these artists and combined it all into one nearly* flawless ("James" was meh) record. This may be their best work to date. A perfect combo of gothic rock and newwave.
Operation Charlie does it?
Ethan Nelson they are all my fav bands
As a big fan of depeche i could say mgmt are doing what depeche had to do with their last three albums
and Pet Shop Boys and New Order
The chorus is pure gold :)
One of the best song of the album
This song is super funny. One of my favorites off the great album
This one is probably the most underrated gems on this album period.
This song asks one question: What do we take with us when we die if our memories are consumed by a phone? The answer? Don't live your life looking through lens of a device that distorts and perverts your perception of reality. Spend your time searching for meaning and purpose, love and art in the real world. That reminds me, go listen to Drug Dealer's "The Real World" and breathe. You will be okay. Take care my friends and enjoy the ride of life.
Heard My little dark age randomly, and without listening to any other songs on the album I ordered the record. Had the pleasure of discovering this amazing song and others in amazing audio quality :)
Everysingle song on this album is like nostalgia and gives me flashbacks

I bought tickets to see them in Seattle in may! Ive been a fan since I was 14 and I'm 21 now. I don't even live in seattle but they just happened to have a show during my first visit there. Bought tickets before the album came out. And im way more excited. This album is fucking amazing. Too bad I have to go solo :-(
Jack Burney Same here!! We’re both going solo and we’re both going to have A GREAT FUCKING TIME. FUCK SOCIAL STIGMAS.
You two should grab a beer. The MGMT concert in Brixton was unbelievable, people stayed behind to dance until even the background music was pulled.
Jasmine Amelia if you wouldn't mind, I'll totally buy us some beer at the concert! If not, cool too.
Jack Burney I have no idea how to coordinate this over youtube but if we end up meeting each other thru energy vibrations at the show, I will 100% take you up on that offer :~)
Jasmine Amelia what color hair and eyes do you have? I will find you

Listening to this album from my phone and wireless headphones. The seclusion is complete.

I wish they made a video for this song, it really needs it... seems so true for our life style that people are living now a days...
Somebody finally wrote a song about this issue.
The chorus is gorgeous. Is that Ariel Pink singing 'on my phone'?
I remember back in 2018 I thought this shit was nothing special then a few listens later I was addicted to this song

"Even if you choose to believe that it's over, you'll come back to me again, you can go ahead and stop pretending" I like this line so much. It's basically how I feel about Twitter. I left the platform in November because of my mental state using it (instead of consuming content like you should I was trying to make friends, despite never interacting with people who were quite obviously trying to become friends with me). Ever since I left I still cannot stop thinking about it and everything I've left behind. Basically everybody I know has told me that I should return to the platform, and I want to, but I risk too much.
How did everyone you know told you such a bad thing to do?
Graciaaaaaaas por tanto amor músical
Too good. Hook sounds like the AOT ending
best on the album
I love this song so much, especially the ending, so realtable to this generation aswell

I love this song and I’m ready to sacrifice my self to mgmt.
My favorite band MGMT, sounding at times like my other favorite band Daft Punk. Best song ever?

this reminds me so much of ariel pink/haunted graffiti, it's A1
If you watch Anthony Fantano's review, he says that MGMT ripped off a bunch of Ariel Pinks stuff on this album
He worked on it.
Parizivial meh, I don’t really follow fantano as I like to make my own decisions about what sort of music I like, but I wouldn’t say they copied Ariel so much as they were influenced by him. I can also see a lot of Cure influences, and even a John Maus influence in the album. But I can understand why some would see it as copying.
Chelsea Becker you can watch Fantano and also make your own decisions about music to listen, just saying.
Ariel collaborated with MGMT on this album.
Cell phones and social media are literally tearing the fabric of society apart.
