  • Ric and Halisi officially moved to Lisbon in September 2022, nearly 2-3 years before they'd planned to. Initially, the plan was to reach full F.I.R.E. (financial independence, retire early) but circumstances led them to move up the date and move at a lower cost of living. Do they regret that decision? Come with questions and join us for a lively discussion.

      I have seen MORE people stealing here than I have in the US. No one wants to go to the US jail, you may never leave. HOWEVER unlike the US, it's always been food, as opposed to DVD's and other things that people don't need to survive. 🧐

    This horrified people that can't grasp the fact that Halisi and Ric are in a country that had slavery, forgets that that was slavery in the USA and that until late '60s of past century, black folks couldn't be sitting in the same spaces as white people and they even couldn't go to the same public toilets! Why do these kind of people embarrass theirselves so much?! Besides that, racism is waaaaay worse in the USA than it is here and if this person really want to verify that, it's so easy to look at the numbers!

      @@OurBlackUtopia I was joking around and I pretended that I was shocked because you didn't drink portuguese wines! I didn't understand that you were talking about the time you spent in Spain! Licor Beirão is wonderful! I don't know how to say "licor" in English, but it's a very sweet and a bit more alcoholic drink. Usually it's served in a tiny glass. "Beirão" means from Beira, which is in N-S in the center and W-E it's in the east of Portugal (Beira Alta e Beira Baixa), near Spain. Try "Licor Beirão" and "Brandy Mel": it's great! "Mel" means 🍯. They are both strong and I rarely drink alcohol, but try to drink just a tiny bit at a time. You spelt "Ginginha" right! If you go to Óbidos (a small village near Peniche - about 100km North from Lisbon), try to drink Ginginha from a chocolate cup: you can ask to be served in a chocolate cup: it's absolutely delicious and Óbidos is great, I go there sometimes in the summer since I was little! 🙂 Oh, I forget to say: sometimes I cook chicken chic (Idk how it is called in the USA, we call it "frango" and chicken it's "galinha". I think that "frango" is way better!) with Brandy Mel and it's delicious! 😛

    All PT beaches are public. River banks too, whether properties reach the river banks or not (depending on the characteristics, it can be 10 meters, 30 m or 50 m that are always public). The access can be sometimes made difficult by hotels and resorts (it happens in Algarve...), but it can never be prevented: you are 100% allowed to enter and cross the resort if no other path is available/walkable to reach the beach. Ocean beaches and river beaches (they're great!) can be either guarded or not. If they are guarded, there will be lifeguards, toilet facilities, a cafe/restaurant, parking... If not, it's at your own risk.

    As much as I love Ric and Halisi, I wish they could hear themselves sometimes. Is so farfetched that a black person experienced racism in Portugal? Portugal is a racist country. I know that African Americans don't want to accept because they need to believe otherwise. They want to live in Portugal so bad, that they ignore the obvious. Why is that America is so racist, but Portugal isn't? Even though slavery lasted much longer in the Portuguese colonies and they took more African slaves than any other European country? This notion that the Portuguese were nice enslavers is just dead wrong and I wish Halisi would stop implying that. As an African American who lived there and speaks the language, I can assure that Portugal is not paradise for black people. Racism has been leathal in Portugal. Black people do get killed for being black in Portugal.
    If the man said he experienced racism and he's leaving, that shouldn't bother you. Stop trying to force Portugal down people"s throat because you have an agenda. Some people won't have to be there for 5 years to see that Portugal doesn't even have opportunities for it's own people. That's why they are desperate to get your money in their banks. They have using black people for centuries.
    Learn the language if you love Portugal so much.
    I know I'm going to get blocked.
    I know in my heart that you are good people, but don't get mad if someone doesn't like Portugal. 2 million Portuguese people are living outside of Portugal.
    Happy Anniversary!

      Change will only come when we accept that we are not perfect, either. Halisi and Ric tell us about THEIR experience. And it has been a good one in PT. We can not be so bitter about all these mistakes from the past. It is unfair to blame the now living - that are trying to change for the better, and believe me, that have already changed a lot (though there is still a long road ahead) - for their father's mistakes. In (black) Africa there is also racism. In northern Africa they enslave the black migrants. When in SA (mild example) you are from a different (black) tribe you are not treated equal. In Rwanda, they killed each other for ethnic reasons - all black... Do you thing that it is racial heaven there? If it was, black americans would flock there, because being black in the States is hugely different from being black in Europe, Portugal included. Where do you live? In PT, being so bad a country? And you have not yet found a better place? Can you tell me, please, a place on Earth that has no inustice, no racism, no fear, no aggressive people...? I agree that there is racism in PT, but don't compare it, don't assume so much of what you really haven't experienced. Don't make it worse than it is. Make it better. Be positive. Don't try to be the change with so much bitterness and resentment. Do good. Be good. Peace.

      @OurBlackUtopia  Год назад +3

      Now Teddy - we NEVER say that anti-blackness and racism are not global...they are! HOWEVER, I have been here for a year I have not read of any mass shootings targeting black neighborhoods, I have not seen nor read about police killing innocent black folks; harassing yes, killing no. If you have articles to the contrary please send me the links: hello@ourblackutopia.com
      It's been years. So either they do kill in the dark with no one around and bury the evidence, or NO ONE around has a camera phone. 🧐 I ASK BLACK FOLKS WHO ARE NOT AMERICAN ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH THE POLICE AND THEY DON'T COME CLOSE TO THE EXPERIENCES OF EVERY ONE OF THE MALES IN MY FAMILY. NONE HAVE BEEN HELD AT GUN POINT LIKE MY DAD AND MY SON. NONE HAVE BEEN HARASSED DAILY LIKE MY COUSIN. Yes this anecdotal but it is followed up by an extensive search IN PORTUGUESE on police killing of unarmed civilians.
      WE DO NOT HAVE AN AGENDA EXCEPT TO SAY THAT AMERICA NEEDS TO FEEL THE PAIN OF AN AFRICAN AMERICAN BRAIN DRAIN. Where you choose to go is up to you. As you know we interview folks who have immigrated to other countries because Portugal is not for everyone.
      WE ARE LEARNING THE LANGUAGE AS YOU VERY WELL KNOW, WE'VE BEEN TAKING LESSONS SINCE JANUARY. WE JUST HAD LESSONS TODAY. Do not discount our intelligence, consciousness, nor critical thinking.
      The question that every Black American needs to ask themselves before moving to another country is not is it racist. OF COURSE IT IS RACIST THE GLOBE IS ANTI-BLACK-AMERICAN. Not anti-black BUT ANTI-BLACK-AMERICAN - I HAVE HAD TOO MANY SNUBS BY AFRICANS FROM THE CONTINENT NOT TO SAY THAT THE WHOLE GLOBE IS ANTI-BLACK-AMERICAN. THEY STEAL OUR ART FORMS, COPY THEM, MONETIZE THEM, AND THEN CALL US THUGS AND CRIMINALS ...INCLUDING AFRICANS. SO WHERE DO WE GO? WHERE DO WE GO? WE WERE STOLEN FROM OUR LANDS, STRIPPED OF OUR LANGUAGE, LEFT WITH NO WHERE TO CALL HOME AND NO CULTURE EXCEPT WHAT WE COBBLED TOGETHER. MOST ARE SO FULL OF SELF-LOATHING THEY CANNOT GET OUT OF THEIR OWN WAY.
      So as long as I am on this earth I will continue to tell my people that there is a better way and part of their reparations can be taking advantage of the benefits offered and the privileges, that come with being American, WHIICH I FREELY ADMITTED IN THIS VIDEO ADDING THAT NOT ALL BLACK IMMIGRANTS HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCE. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?!?!?

      @vervideosgiros1156 11 месяцев назад

      You say that you speak the language, so I'm gonna reply in Portuguese. A Halisi nunca disse que não havia racismo em Portugal. O facto de Portugal ter sido um país com bastante escravidão não tem nada a ver com Portugal hoje em dia! Se quer fazer comparações sem sentido, pense bem como os pretos viviam nos EUA nos anos '60s do século passado! Se diz que os portugueses são racistas por causa daquilo que se passou há séculos, então pense naquilo que se fazia no SEU país, há 55 anos! A Guerra Colonial que precedeu a queda da ditadura, em 1974, obrigou muitos soldados a irem para a guerra e muitos achavam que já não fazia sentido nenhum haver colónias, mas vivíamos numa ditadura! Os pretos que são mortos pela polícia são dos bairros sociais quando há tiroteios por causa do pessoal da droga. Aí a polícia por vezes mata pessoas, mas tanto mata pretos, como brancos! Aqui, não vê a polícia de trânsito mandar parar um carro só porque o condutor é preto, nem matá-lo só porque sim! Polícias corruptos e agressivos infelizmente há em todo o lado: há rufias que se aproveitam da profissão que têm para fazer porcaria, mas isso não é a população em geral! Além disso, um americano dizer que em Portugal há muito racismo, quando no seu país há racismo quase que institucionaizado, seria de rir, se não desse vontade de chorar! Quando fiz quimioterapia havia um velhote preto, praticamente sem-abrigo que, tal como eu, foi tratado, e não pagou um cêntimo, porque aqui ninguém tem de ser rico para não morrer de cancro! Aqui as pessoas têm tratamento de qualidade, enquanto no seu país, quem pode pagar muito, tem tratamento de qualidade, quem não pode pagar tanto, tem uma terapia menos eficaz e mais tóxica, e quem não é rico, tem a casa hipotecada para pagar o tratamento, ou morre, por não ter dinheiro para se tratar! Sei do que falo, porque já alguns americanos mo disseram! Se não gosta de Portugal, que lhe faça bom proveito, mas vá ser Kevin para outro vídeo, por favor!

    I watched a show last night...most of the show! Norman Reedus RIDE! He was in Portugal meeting some of the locals. It was really interesting. Apparently, there are laws that in effect that help people who have drug addiction problems. Instead of putting them in jail, they get treatment! This got me wondering what other social programs and laws are in the country that actually HELP people instead of punish them for being sick or needing help. He also spoke to some of the locals who are not very enthusiastic about so many people moving to Portugal.
    The whole show was very educational. The different towns he traveled to, the roads! He rides a motorcycle around the world and Portugal is not very accommodating to bikes...if you didn't know! Lol.
