I'm glad I found an explanation. His voice threw me off so much at first in that scene, lol. I thought it had to be a joke or Lynch being surreal dubbing in a woman's voice or something. But in any case, it grew on me and now I love it haha. Kinda feel bad for James though, have himself singing at his not-favorite-key cemented into history

So funny. I always wonder what percentage of the audience back then took this song 100% straight? Then I remember how dumb we are today and wonder if even fewer people get irony and satire today...

lots of people hates on that scene because they don't get that it was supposed to be funny!

It's good in like a Daniel Johnston way

You have to admit tho, they play the scene so straight. There's no indication its supposed to be funny. Donna even runs out of the room crying.. Sure the song itself is a parody of corny 50s music. But it was used in a serious way. I didn't take the scene as a joke, I just thought Lynch liked the sound of james falsetto, and it worked for his character. made him sound extra vulnerable and sensitive

@@kevinr.3542 I think it's not meant as a joke but it's meant to be a bit funny. Just the fact that the song says "just you and I" and there's three people is a contradiction that makes the scene funny and a bit poignant as it piles on Donna's insecurities

i don't believe either that it was supposed to be funny or that there's anything wrong with it. but then, i'm not stricken with the hipster disease.
