RJ Mitte from Breaking Bad has cerebral palsy and he did a phenomenal job on the show. They didn’t really focus on his disability except for one episode but it is obvious in the show he is disabled they did not try to hide it.

Hi Hannah you are so right in this. It’s hard enough living life as a disabled person but imagine the difficulties faced by a disabled person trying to make their living as an actor xx

I’m disabled. You don’t see me complaining. I just think it means they’re a damn good actor.

Hi Hannah. I totally agree with you on this. I have disabilities too and I experience spasms and use a wheelchair. Watching able bodied characters play disabled roles often you can see errors such as the ill fitting wheelchair. I also see it as taking away jobs from talented disabled actors when they give the role to someone who is able bodied. I can understand in some box sets you might have the storyline where someone becomes disabled. I think Liz Carr did a great job in her role as Clarissa in BBC’s Silent Witness but even she said how initially access was a huge issue for her. And I feel this is why disabled actors aren’t used a lot of the time because they have additional adjustments that need to be put into place. That’s just my thoughts.

I was just thinking about that yesterday when I saw a preview for the movie, "Wonder" which is about a kid with Treacher-Collins Syndrome. Yeah, they used an actor who does not h ave it. Used make up on him. I have not watched the movie. It is not on Netflix or amazonprime.
On the other hand; there are amazing RUclips creators, such as your self, who are bringing life with disabilities to the forefront; often with comedy and caring. I think you know Jessica Kellgren-Fozzard. But, you should check out the American comedian Drew Lynch. He was on America's Got Talent and made it to the finals. Just him and a guy with puppets. He lost; but it really helped his career. He is funny, but also addresses some very serious issues with service dogs. Molly Burke, a blind RUclipsr, also is an absolute riot!

I don’t agree. I am disabled and an actor. the person to get the job should be the best person for the role. Just being disabled is not enough. it’s an artistic pursuit which may require a lot more than simply being disabled. Having emotional range, able to capture an audience, fulfilling things like tone and timing etc. to name a few.

I would only agree if the abled actor is not good at acting anyway and not good at portraying a disabled person

That's really insightful actually. I hadn't thought about that before. Also, have you sent your petition to the Westmorland gazette??

Yeah, I guess its a bit like the role of a black person being played by a white person with black makeup. Or a female role played by a dude with a wig.

I know this is a year late, but a genuine question:
In films about people who become disabled (off the top of my head like the one about Stephen Hawkins), where they show them before they were for example, wheelchair bound, how do you feel about the use of able bodied actors playing those roles?
Sorry if that doesn’t make any sense!

I know this is late, but for this I think they should cast an actor who is an ambulatory wheelchair user, meaning they use a wheelchair when they need it and walk when they don't.

@@alexandriak7991 no worries!! I’d totally forgotten about this until I got the notification 😅
And I think that is an excellent idea! 😊

@@TotosTales =) I had thought about this myself a while back too. But the best course of action is an ambulatory wheelchair user. I think it would also help change the 'only people who use wheelchairs are wheelchair bound' stereotype (let's not discuss how the wording in that ableist sentence is bad because I wrote it more offensive sounding on purpose)

Yeeeees! Why don´t play disabled people disabled characters? It´s so simple :)
