    Hi Baz, really fair and honest review mate, I've had one for about 10 years its the old type with the palm tree on the fret board, totally agree with how quiet this instrument is, played acoustically it is quiet, but for a gigging instrument it never let me down, amped up it sounds fine and it is a tough ukulele, its been dropped, banged and had all sorts accidentally poured or spilt on it, but it has never let me down, if I'm honest there are far better ukes out there at a far more reasonable price, it just brings back so many happy memories for me

    I have followed you for a while and I enjoy your unbiased reviews. I have never commented before, but this review hit home. My first ukulele was a Kala left-hand concert cutaway, and I agree with everything you said about this Kala. It is too narrow at the nut, I don’t like the rounded neck, the intonation doesn’t seem quite right, and they cost too much for what you get.
    After a few years I decided to purchase a Magic Fluke tenor and I am so much happier when playing. Keep up the great work.

    I own an older KA-JTE... that does have a floating bridge and tailpiece (no pickup). Glad I was able to find one a few years back before they made the change to the instrument. My wife likes it, mainly because it is quieter compared it my other Ukes.

    As a sucker for archtops and owner of a fleet of fine archtop guitars, I admit I was initially drawn to this uke. But in the back of my mind, I always wondered how ukulele strings could drive an arched top, particularly a laminate. Most archtop guitars I've played unplugged are not bright and open but tightly focused in the tonal response by design. It takes steel strings to make that design work on a guitar. I had never before heard this uke before, but I imagined it would be ok plugged in, and it is. The older gloss finish looks better, and I agree with all of your complaints on the aesthetics of the instrument. And that nut! And don't get me started on that price. I look forward to the next review of an archtop with a floating bridge, a tailpiece, a passive pickup, and I hope a thinner top and suspended fingerboard. Thanks for a good informative review. Now I know.

    I just bought an older one from about 9 years ago. It does sound a little muted, but strings will help that. I think they didn't go with the floating bridge because of the way it's held with the forearm pinching it between the chest. Could make it odd to hold with no strap. They did release the honeyburst custom with the floating bridge but it didn't sell well 🤷‍♂️ awesome review, a bit harsh IMO, but to each their own!

    Hey Baz!
    Thanks for your informative reviews, They’ve really helped my purchase choices.
    One question though; Do you think it would be possible to add an arch top at the bottom of this model, or do you think it would interfere with the sound and construction?
    Ross

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Ross - not sure how you'd fit one - the bridge on this is glued down, but also holds the pickup wiring. Whilst bridges can be removed I think it would be really fiddly to then get the pickup in a new arch bridge. Maybe a luthier could do it?

    • @RevolverRoselot
      @RevolverRoselot 3 года назад

    Hi Baz! I had one of these a couple years ago, I do like the plastic pearl binding, but I am into gaudy. LOL! It IS a lot of money for what it is, and it does work well when plugged in and held tune very well. It is somewhat strangled in volume when not plugged in, but I didn't mind that part, since I have a small flat and don't like to disturb the neighbors. The better electric jazz guitar is the Sound Smith Electric Hollow Body Jazz Tenor Ukulele. I think you would enjoy that one!

    I have one of the originals models that I got in the 2006-2008 time frame in the natural mahagony. I will say for the time they were a different ukulele from the rest of the market. The one I have is in a now discontinued natural mahogany with a gloss finish, and the palm tree inlay at the 12th. Just to let you know it has a five piece neck at least in the first run. Do I regret buying it, no it was my first uke that wasn't a toy. Is it my favorite, no I have much better ukuleles now. Is it a bad ukulele, no it represented something different and unique when I got it, still fun to play and got me started on uke. But most of your points are spot on and even apply to the first run.

    Hi thank you for this review. Eventhough I'm still quite a newby, I completely agree with you. Without examanating the uke it's a stunning instrument to see (at least to me). But as you have said, hope I understand you correctly, the style of bridge does'nt fit. I expected to see a more rounder curved bridge on it to make it more special and catchy. Do have to admit that I have no idea how the bridges of original jazz guitars suppose to look, but this is just my opinion. What I also don't like much is the painted Kala logo which makes it look cheap. Thank you for your review!

    Your review appeared within hours after my new Kala archtop arrived - I was able to purchase it for $160 USD which seems about right , I agree with most of your comments about the look of the bridge , but not sure how you’d amplify a floating bridge set up ? I was looking for an instrument with a ‘ flashy style ‘ that I could play thru an amp in a group, - indoors or out - and this one fit the bill. I’ve tried pickups in acoustic ukes and often run into feedback problems - not an issue with this one - but it is quiet acoustically. I also noted the file marks on the fretboard that should have cleaned up. I think your review was spot on, though it sounded a little negative ( I like the flashy binding ) and think this would best suit a performer who plays amplified.

    It does seem wildly overpriced, maybe that's why the slapped that tacky binding on it, to try to make it look fancy? I suspect they didn't put a floating bridge on there because they assume ukulele players aren't smart enough to deal with a movable bridge, or restringing with a tailpiece. There is still a stigma by some makers that ukulele players are, by definition, novices. There is also the theory that without steel strings, there isn't enough tension to produce a loud enough sound with a floating bridge. I suppose next week's review will put that to the test.

      @@GotAUkulele ok, well... i am very certain the "Chinese line is charging” extra for this feature.... there are not too many models on the market they need this press for, right?

    Sounds like a $100 ukulele. Not very good. In fact I have heard $100 ukuleles with much sweeter tones.... it is fine looking but I won’t pay anywhere near what they want for it. Looking forward to the next comparison review... Thanks Doc

    Good grief, there are much better Ukulele's out there for that price! Personally I think it's ugly. Thanks again for the review Baz.

    Well that is one disappointing tenor. Nut too narrow, no gig bag, over priced. Great review!

    Kala does not listen to its consumers complaints. They continue putting out the same old flat sounding junk.

      Cheap is one thing it’s not! Or at least their pricing isn’t!

      @@GotAUkulele love your reviews but this one looks a bit of a hash. The Kai 700 I bought on the strength of your review has a lot going on but I think a beautiful uke was produced. The components of this one looks a mess to my eye. By the way, thanks for recommending the Kai kti 700. Stay safe 😷

      @@daveadriffield7296 I get what you mean. The sunburst works for me, but as I say in the vid - not much else. The bridge is all wrong, the neck is scruffy and the pearly plastic edging is gaudy!
