Also, gonna give like a "short explanation" of how all the materials work kinda, still want to let you discover the monster system on your own mostly but I feel this is worth talking about since the game tells you about this one thing in the item description but isn't very clear about the details.
So... there are two "level ups" per node for monsters, if you don't fastforward, you'll see like, stats come out in two bursts, the first bursts is the "normal level up stats" you could say, those are fixed and there is nothing you can do to affect them. The second burst says like "bonus", this is dependent on what material you used on this node. How I'd explain them is like, "Potent" material will give you a 100% potential level up, you'll get all the pre-determined stats for this level in their normal, 100% amount. The power/mana/vitality material will boost their respective stat gain to 200%, but you'll get 0% of the two others. Also it's VERY IMPORTANT to mention that this isn't always the case, like at late level, it's pretty much like this, but early on sometime the specialized materials can kinda "round down" on very weak levels and end up only costing you other stats while still giving you just 1 of the specialized stats. if like you said you "really don't want to mess up Gorgonopsid" you'll probably want to find a chart of all the levels and decide which ones you want specialized materials for. For "throw-away monsters" you can experiment just to get a good grasp of how the system work. I'd say save up specialized "Crystals" if you come across some though, those are the level 5 materials and are usually difficult to come by, sometime like only 1 or 2 monsters in the whole game drop them with low rates.

At this point do you think it's worth it to test things out with gorgonopsid and if I feel like I've messed up just release them and catch another?

@@BlitzballMania Yeah early on it's not THAT big of a deal, right now you have easy access to the first two materials (droplets and slivers) so you can kinda easily re-build up to that point, the more material levels you have to fetch though the more annoying it becomes to re-train a monster, and then if you mess up one that have been "infused" some desirable traits, yeah at that point it becomes a big pain to redo everything.
So for now yeah it's not TOO bad.

Kinda just repeating this here to make sure you see it lol, said it in another comment but... at some point you said like "I'd kinda need a monster that is "the opposite" of a late-bloomer" you caught Uridimmu, you could kinda use this one for now, it peaks pretty fast and should last you for the next couple areas as a somewhat strong commando.

True, he could also level up the early peaker Hoplit, should be decent for now

That's an idea let me see if I have that monster and we can give it a shot.

Why don't you use Spiceacillian as your 3rd monster? You have leveled it up more than even Gorgonopsid
