  • Danny Drinkwater joins us on High Performance, taking this opportunity to announce his retirement from professional football. After an almost 20 year career, Danny takes some time to look back on his accomplishments, greatest lessons and biggest challenges.
    After rising through the Youth Academy at Manchester United, Danny played for some of the country’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Leicester City. He takes Jake and Damian through his football career; from sitting on the bench at Manchester United aged 18, to being a key part of Leicester City’s Premier League winning squad.
    He shares the emotional rollercoaster of winning the Premier League, as well as the painful moment his Euro's opportunity was taken away. Having worked with legendary figures like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sir Alex Ferguson and Claudio Ranieri, Danny reflects on how they inspired and challenged him, both in his career and personal life.
    Danny delves into what he believes makes a great football manager, emphasising the significance of personal management to bring out the best in players and build team momentum. They also discuss Danny’s difficult reality with mental health struggles, including dealing with rejection after new offers failed to materialise. Reflecting on his lowest point when he was arrested for drink-driving in 2019, Danny highlights the importance of mental health care and finding practical solutions to unhappiness.
    This is a conversation about personal growth, overcoming the darkest moments and moving to a brighter future.

    I don't think pro footballers realise how much of an achievement it is just to say "I'm a professional footballer" let alone play in the premier league let alone win major trophies. Well done Danny you've experienced something that only 1% of boys in the world dreamed to experience

    He should show a bit of humility and realise teams cannot afford the risk of which drinkwater they would get, the problem child or the professional performer he’s proven he can be.

Talked about wanting money and being paid what he is worth the make determines that. Sounds like he didn’t work for that Euros spot in camp but it was other people’s fault. 5 minutes in and you can tell why he's retiring - asking why nobody wants to 'take a punt on getting me fit [...] I had championship offers, but I wouldn't be the cheapest'
    if he was really bothered, he'd get himself to a base level of fitness for a club to build on - as for salary, if he wanted to play & earn a contract he could afford to do it for free (retirement pays nothing), he got lucky by being part of that leicester title win, which was primarily due to kante, mahrez & vardy - he had minimal impact. Chelsea signing him felt odd at the time, as he was never the top 5 player he clearly still thinks he is

    Favourite quote:

    • @RoEl-od9hl
      @RoEl-od9hl 6 месяцев назад +1

      That’s a well known phrase. If he would’ve actually talked about some of those plates, maybe it would be inspiring because people could relate. Instead it’s just a platitude that’s been said many times with no real substance here. Seems like he’s had issues at every single club for some reason. Maybe delve into what the actual details are so we can follow the story. Instead it’s just ‘yeah, it was great, I was working hard, and then things happened that I can’t talk about and “I’m like, what is going on here”?? Rinse. Repeat.
      I think it’s actually the hosts. Why not get actual details and answers? This show could be so much better. Guests that could be interesting but hosts don’t ever mail down on any details. :shrugs:

    I’m not interested in football at all, but I really feel for Danny. He seems to have a lot of unresolved issues within himself which hampered him. He should have been given the support and physiological help he needed by the clubs he played for at a much younger age. He got in his own way and self medicated due to having no help and support structure. He needed that “grandfather” type of coach that he once had. I think coaching in football is light years behind other sports and so is the phycological help or lack thereof. Look at sports like Formula 1 and MotoGP. They are innovators in what is needed by a lot of young men that have the potential to be great athletes. The days of rough and tough, god complex, biased coaches, who don’t communicate properly and don’t treat people with respect should come to an end. A good coach knows how to get the best out of every player, especially the complicated and troubled ones.

    Nice guy but when he rocked up at Villa he was seriously unfit. Branded the "McGinn fill in" he wasn't even close to Lansbury level with his fitness. He's a Premier League winner so he can retire extremely happy.

    Watched this and wanted to understand or feel sympathy for him. But realistically he put himself in this situation & was living a London lifestyle without even having to play football & deal with the pressure that comes with playing for Chelsea. Yet somehow still managed to make that into a bad situation, must be hard being rich and getting paid for just training.

    Hats off to him for being open and honest. Seems like he's been chasing a high (Leicester) ever since leaving. By his own admission he's not obsessed with football and has won more than some players will in a 25-30 year career... Bow out with a healthy bank balance (I'm assuming) and enjoy the next phase of your life. 👍 Really interesting listen 👌 Typical English media to tear into an easy target going through a hard time!!

    Danny you signed a 5 year contract with Leicester City to keep you at the King Power till 2021. Unfortunately, Mahrez, Kante and yourself wanted away for bigger clubs. Greed meant you were the only one who misjudged the situation.If you had stayed with Leicester you would have had a better career.

    • @rickylovesyou
      @rickylovesyou 7 месяцев назад +27

      LOL. Yeah and where are they now?? Stupid comment.
      Mahrez won the UCL and treble, kante become a club legend at Chelsea and won the world cup and UEFA nations league.
      This wasn't greed it was natural progression in a players career, this idea that players aren't allowed to make moves to better their career, just like anyone else in their field is immature.
      If someone said to me I couldn't move to another company for better pay, resources and opportunities just because I'd laugh in their face.
      Besides, Leicester hardly reinvested and refreshed their squad so it was the smart play to move on.
      What wasn't in hindsight is the move to Chelsea, to which they go through a running conveyor belt of top class midfielders and managers.
      He needed to settle and Chelsea simply is not a place to do that.
      People need to grow up, seriously.
