    Having had the pleasure of interviewing Gareth when he was u21 Manager, for my local football club, Gareth is one of the nicest and most honest people I have ever met. I then met Gareth again at an FA Awards Ceremony, yes I was lucky to win an award that night, we spoke in the bar and I was invited to watch Steve Holland along with Gareth coach the u21 at St George's Park along with my son. Again Gareth was amazing and so kind to my son that day, a truly memorable experience.
    I have the utmost respect and time for this man.
    This was an amazing Podcast to watch.

    What a great final message about kindness. Such a great chap. I remember all the abuse he suffered from Euro 96. I can still picture it spray painted on walls, like social media posts today. No-one should have to face that but I'm so glad he has used the life experiences to now be an amazing England manager. What a great podcast once again. 🙏

    He's done a great job, calm and assured and honest. Very intelligent guys. Consistency of culture is important and I hope he's in the job for another 4-6 years. England needs a revamp and less pressure. Anyone else who judges him for not having the experiencing at a top, top club or are really deluded by his selection decisions, really don't know football. Keep it going GS, great job.

    • @usman645
      @usman645 3 года назад +12

      It's an overtly defensive setup. Leaving out talented players.
      Gareth himself says that he picks his squads solely based on form.
      Proceeds to bring 4 Right-Backs and leave out Jesse Lingard who is in red hot form.
      Reaching the semi-finals in the previous WC is an achievement in itself but when you look at the style of football it fails against the best of the best. Setting up with 3 CB's only attracts pressure and with the front lines of France, Germany, Spain, one must be wary.

      @@lfc4044 2020 and people are still comparing club level management to International management. The only thing the same about the 2 jobs is the sport they partake in. You have to be daft to think hes the most tactically astute manager around, but the challenges of creating a togetherness in an international squad and a drive to want to win things every time you get to see these players (once every few months) can’t be underestimated. Many top club managers have failed miserably at country level, they aren’t the same job.

    Wow wow wow! It's close, but I think that's now my favourite HP episode. Seriously interesting and insightful.
    His point about it not just being about ability. We've heard it a few times, but coming from the England manager makes it even more important.
    All / any player who is anywhere near the England team is an incredibly gifted footballer. Some people seem to forget that it's VERY hard to even make it as a pro, let alone play in the prem, let alone get selected for England, let alone be in the starting 11 of a major championship.
    So these players are VERY special.
    What Gareth and his coaches need to concentrate on isn't thier technical ability, but the mental side of it. He almost needs to be a sports physicologist with some tactical nouse. If he could do some derren brown mind tricks on them so they felt no pressure, and were cold, clinical performers, they would almost definitely win the euros. At this level, it's all what's in the head. Great pod chaps, brilliant stuff. Thanks!

      Exactly. I think it is something we forget about. Now I understand how we got to this point with the 10 year plan that he and Sir Trevor Brooking devised in 2012 I get how he turned things round so quickly. It is like they basically told the FA they got it all wrong and were blaming Managers and the Premier League when it was actually the mental side and coaching that needed to be dealt with.
      I always had a lot of respect for him but now I get what he and Sir Trevor Brooking did behind the scenes, I respect he even more

    It's amazing how Southgate just won't play Grealish and anyone can see now that he'll be mostly on the bench for the whole tournament. If I were Grealish I'd just up and leave-taking my holidays early and wait for the next manager to come in. He's wasting Grealish's time because he's not going to play him.

    • @mattwebb6056
      @mattwebb6056 3 года назад

      He's absolutely not. Grealish is an impact player and is also a team player, he's not some egotistical player who thinks the world revolves around him. He'll have known going into the Euros what his role would be and when he comes on, he plays well. If Grealish was cheesed off he wouldn't come on with the impact he does.

    • @dfstarborn
      @dfstarborn 3 года назад

      @@mattwebb6056 I'm sorry, but Jack Grealish is by far Englands best creative play maker and everytime he's on the pitch something happens. Pep of Man City drools over and praises him hence they reason MC are going to sign Jack for 100 million after the euros along with Harry Kane. If you get enough chances it' obvious that your going to have an impact at sometime or other. sterling is getting so much time on the field that something is bound to happen to him. Yes, he's now our lucky charm so we keep him but he performance have been terrible but then he gets into the right position at the right time to score which saves him from being benched for the next game. But this doesn't mean he's better than Grealish or Sancho for that matter. The fact is that sterling runs in to defences like a kamikazi pilot. Once sterling stops before a defence that's where it ends because he can't get round defences like Grealish and Sancho. We saw Sancho play yesterday and he took defences on like Grealish would have done if he had played. Grealish plays and Kane scores. Now as I said, sterling through luck has cemented his place in the first 11 but he has grown as the tournament has gone on. So it is best to keep him in the side because other teams will be weary of him even though he makes me nervous everytime he gets the ball because you don't know if he's doing to lose the ball and give it to the opposition like he did against Germany or if he's going to score. Kane is finally getting some decent service and has 3 goals now the same as Sterling so hopefully we'll see more. Grealish, Foden and Sancho will now be in competition for the same position which is outrageous to me as the three of them should be on the field together. Of course, they're not because Southgate has to be all pragmatic.

      People used to chuck bananas at black players - horrible.
      But I don't know anyone who has ever seen or heard a racist incident at a match in well over a decade. In fact, I don't even know anyone who has seen such an event watching a match in pub.

      @@AlexGalloway1993 Nope - there are no racist chants at British grounds
      There are also no racist chants in bars when watching games
      Thankfully, that died a very long time ago
      If it existed, I would be the first to condemn it - I remember Mark Walters having bananas chucked at him and it sickened me
      I watched England Romania in a hostel in Central America with about 30 people from all around the world
      No one understood why the players were kneeling and everyone was laughing because it looked so stupid
      When we explained the reason, they just found it totally bizarre
      It looks stupid and does nothing - plus we don't have a racism problem in grounds or bars
      Apparently some players get abuse on Twitter - I have no idea about that

    Gareth, every player is physically knackered, let the passes do the miles, pace in short bursts, concentrate on counter attacking. Slow, slow, slow, quick. We can use pace as a weapon but playing high tempo from the off is a surefire way of running out of stamina somewhere in the second half and ultimately losing. England need to take the foot off the gas.

    GS is thoughtful and analytical, least you'd expect when time is plentiful as a national team manager. Though time will tell, some of his selection decisions are irritating. Any football neutral with common sense will agree. Henderson hasn't played since Feb, Ward Prowse should be fuming. Not to mention how selfish he was to rob that pen from DCL and miss it when management may have already determined set piece takers. He dare not do that at Liverpool. Rashford will be operated on post-Euros, clearly not 100%. Watkins is like for like, stepped up when called upon and scored more in his debut EPL season. Sterling has his qualities, but out of form. Mount and Sancho have more than pace and quick feet out wide. Then there's Foden and Grealish who are brilliant, Sterling getting a ride. And has Lingard insulted Southgate's family? Ignoring Bamford is idiotic; the bloke does everything and is left footed, better than DCL. KP and Rice in midfield is solid, well what happens if one of them gets injured and all you have is Bellingham (super mature but inexperienced) and super rusty Hendo? Good luck England.

    Jesus is coming back very soon to judge this world and set up his kingdom that will reign forever and ever. Hell is real, hell wasn't made for humans but for fallen angels but if you reject Jesus and his sacrifice you will end up in hell. Whoever you worship on earth is who you will worship in the afterlife. Repent before it is too late Please i plead with you for the sake of God.

    I didnt understand why Gareth played players who were on the way home in the friendlies, what were they testimonials? Seemed like a waste, his team selections are rarely inspiring, if he goes or sterling and rashford instead of grealish and foden, lets see.
