    I think something that hasn't been covered much is that for the first time since the turbo-hybrid era began, Mercedes are not going to have Lewis Hamilton's input on car development. Since they arrived in F1, they've always had world champions to work with as well as experienced drivers.
    And listening to James Vowles' recent interview, Lewis was the type of driver to try a lot of configurations in every direction, which meant it generated a ton of data for the engineers to look at. I wonder how well they'll be able to recover once he's really gone.

    • @brianzamparelli9166
      @brianzamparelli9166 3 месяца назад +7

      Lewis has said on several occasions that Merc does NOT want his input. Imagine that, You have Lewis Hamilton and yet you feel you can do a better job designing a race car by not listening to Lewis Hamilton? Crazy! Maybe they wanted to focus more on what George wants, but even that would be a grand mistake if it makes you ignore a proven winner's input. I feel we are about to witness an epic fall from grace for Mercedes.

    • @charles-antoinemartel-roy
      @charles-antoinemartel-roy 3 месяца назад +8

      @@brianzamparelli9166 I think Lewis recognized that if his inputs were not longer valued, then he had to trust Mercedes with the car. And after 2 seasons of mostly failures, he decided it was time to go somewhere else, where his skills and input are wanted.

    • @truth4reel
      @truth4reel 3 месяца назад +4

      I think if Merc don't win this year then it's over for them for a long time à la McLaren. Without Lewis' inputs I don't think that George by himself will make the car fast enough quick enough. Antonelli is not a Lewis or a Max. I'm rewatching his formula regional season and frankly I see that he is not a young Lewis' or Max's level. not going to do it either. So if the car doesn't win this year I don't think they'll be there next year. It's likely that this Merc drought might be extended.

    I like this partnership with Lewis and Leclerc because neither is going to have it easy. I actually lost hope in Leclerc when Max wiped him to the floor and saw his mistakes, but if with Lewis's data he refines himself, and Lewis does win his 8th title with Ferrari, this will be so epic. I also think they will have similar seat positions and car set up. There is a potential for a great partnership rather than enemies here. Lewis is walking into Leclerc's team, but is coming with so much knowledge.

      @@stuartstogdill2406 We are all entitled to our opinions, but the facts are Ferrari had a better car than Mercedes last season. Lewis was still better than the rest, despite not even being at his best, so that says a lot about the rest. Fia had to mug him off points. Also, if Alonso is 3 years older than Lewis, every year Alonso is in F1 this technically and logically gives Lewis 3 additional years. In 3 additional years minimum in a good car great things can happen. I also don't see Alonso retiring in the next 2 seasons, so Lewis has a good 5 years. Plus, whilst no talks about Alonso being at the end of his career, no one should with Lewis. Have a nice day, you know it is fate that Lewis will win his 8WDC with Ferrari!

  • @hieuluu2

    I think everyone is looking at this all wrong, it wasn't about a "fresh start", "change of scenery", etc...but more of LH only recieved a 2 year extension from Toto and it's set to expired in 2025. Everyone is forgetting that 2026 will ushered in a new era of F1 cars, so knowing that Mercedes don't want him beyond 2025, if they did, they would have giving him a 3×1 and not a 1+1 contract, so then, why not go to Ferrari, get to know the factory, engineers, and the team for 2025, then race the new era of F1 cars a year later? Back when LH won his first Championship with McLaren, Mercedes was a mediocre team, but like Ferrari did, they presented LH with their plans for a new era with the hybrid turbo era. LH has the front row seat to Mercedes, like he did with McLaren, he saw how Mercedes have been struggling and can't get it right for the past two years, he can see they're plan ahead, he saw what Ferrari had plan ahead, and just like when he left McLaren for Mercedes because they had a better plan, he left Mercedes for Ferrari. Now we know Ferrari have been struggling, but even with their struggles, they always had the most powerful engine on the grid. LH can still remember on the Kemmel Straight, with DRS and KERS, he couldn't catch Seb. And last year, it's seems like Ferrari was on the up trajectory while Mercedes was still trying to figured out their car. If LH is catching lightning twice, it could be bad news for Mercedes, McLaren got it wrong with the turbo hybrid era and was stuck in the abyss, could LH seeing that Mercedes will be the same with the new 100% sustainable fuel and bolted for Ferrari? Red Bull will have an unproven Ford engine, Mercedes have proven their engine lack power, so what does LH have to lost joining Ferrari?

    Great interview! Looking from an other perspective the early announcement of Lewis is now seen as a shock and every one is reacting from his point of view. We still have the coming season. Lewis is unhappy of the performance of his car at MB. The development is to slow and not in the right direction. He often stated this. His influence seems not effective. So what can he do? Simple: Use a chock-therapy in the opposite direction. For the season to come, MB has a great opportunity to deliver a car to Lewis where he can win races again. Who knows, maybe he can compete for his 8th World championship title. This should motivate the people at MB. It's going to be thrilling season. Can't wait.

    Great podcast gentlemen, but I disagree that the announced switch by Lewis will not have an influence on the driver and team dynamics this season within the Mercedes camp. If push comes to shove, Mercedes will side with George rather than Lewis, but only of course if they are in a similar position in the championship.
    Regarding the Andretti decision, I think Peter is completely correct. The reasons just make no sense and are absurd to say the least. The Andretti name would add real value to F1 and would provide more seats for new talents. Yes, the other teams would have a short term loss, but it is about the long term vision for the sport.

    The public response to Andretti is really not a good look for the whole of F1, and I was thinking the real reason was because teams was worried about splitting the pot of $ aswell..but tbh, I think its about carbon emissions the so called "stakeholders" probably put a cap on the whole circus as a whole trough the year. Another team would change everything. New fuel, probably new sponsors, change the logistics of of F1 as a whole etc etc. It would make a change that the sport wasnt ready for. Just my 5 cents.

    Two things I find disturbing:
    Fred and Toto are great friends we keep hearing about it. Fred and Lewis have known each other for years. How on earth is the F1 world so shocked by this move? I refuse to believe that this deal would have gone through without Toto's blessings and I would bet he gave them the go ahead since last year. Hence the dodgy contract Merc gave him. I feel that when rumours came out about failed talks between Lewis and Ferrari last year, it was a chance to get it out there and surely Toto would have asked his old friend;"are you trying to poach my asset?"
    Basically Merc gave Lewis time for a smooth transition away from the team with no bad blood.
    Secondly, remember when Mick was dumped by Haas? And Toto was so loud about how he didn't deserve to be off the grid? Well Merc now know they certainly have a free seat for 2025 and they can bring in someone who won't trouble George too much unless he is evidently better than George..then why is nobody mentioning Mick's name in all the projections? We've even heard of the 18 year old kid that's not even raced in F3 yet. Is Nick that insignificant? This is their chance to effortlessly have a #2 Driver that will dance to their tune for at least 2-3 years while they unleash George in whatever car they'll come up with.
    Win-win for everyone here..

    Lewis is always one step ahead in the game. The writing is on the wall at Mercedes. I believe Hamilton may have retired had Fred Vasseur not taken over the team. Vasseur has shown much more respect to Lewis than Toto Wolff in recent days. He gets on well with Charles LeClerc, and currently, the Ferrari is better than the now mid field Mercedes. And again, IT'S A FERRARI!!! Wolff would be smart to sign Carlos Sainz immediately to at least a 1 year contract with an option. Sainz has been linked to Audi when it joins F1 in 2026. I'd also put Kimi Antonelli in the 2nd seat at Williams in 2025. This scenario makes the most sense to me.

    I think people forget that the Mercedes F1 Team is very different to the Car Company Mercedes Benz. A bit over the top for a race team to keep on paying a retired driver as an "ambassador". The goal for a race team is to win races. As Toto has said, F1is a meritocracy, you need to earn the wins.
    I'm not saying Lewis couldn't have a role within the team after he stopped racing, but an "ambassador" role sounds like a golden handshake.

    In 2023, Mercedes and Ferrari were closely matched, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc facing off several times, and Hamilton often coming out on top. Hamilton is known for his disciplined lifestyle, including abstaining from alcohol and tobacco, following a vegan diet, and maintaining rigorous training to stay fit. Additionally, Fernando Alonso, who is three years Hamilton's senior, significantly outperformed his teammate, sparking rumors of a possible switch in sports for the latter. Given Hamilton's current form and lifestyle, there's no apparent reason he can't compete with Leclerc. However, there's a looming concern about whether Leclerc could have a similar impact on Hamilton as Nico Rosberg did on Michael Schumacher, challenging the veteran upon his return from retirement.

    7:17 "the drivers are quite mature". this statement puzzles me as Peter has always had this cynical outlook of how driver think about their teammates. like how can you say in one breath that Lewis just can't bother with the challenge possed by Russell but is open to being charles' teamate. and forget about this lewis hamilton move, peter has had this belief that all of the great drivers are supremely egotistical to the point that you can't get the most from a driver if the guy in the next seat isnt a subservient wuss. like his claim about checo being the perfect no.2 to max last year is equally bizzare and as I've said strikes me as absolutely cynical, to think the drivers aren't mature enough to thrive in the face of challenge and competition.

    As we live at a time where mediatic sensationalism is ruining the romanticism that enlightened the sport in not-so-distant a past, I could not receive this news without tears and awaited some to confirm what almost otherwise appeared as paparazzi stunt to give it any credibility. Cameron having been the first voice that made it all 'ethical', my emotions went too far as I acknowledged his words and wisdom by thanking him with excess familiarity introducing my personal emotion with 'Cameron dearest' as an opening statement, which was so inappropriate that I take this opportunity to apologize for it. The truth of the matter is that I felt an overwhelming duality in my emotions, one where I felt sad to have to witness the driver I have felt for over eleven years to be the only one capable to replicate Formula one 'old generation' ethics into the modern world, to sever his Mercedes 'childhood-born' dream-bond, with what was probably another youth-born dream to once be a titled driver to become anointed into the kingdom of the 'Prancing Horse'. As by no means I can pretend to have accumulated your gentlemen' know-how in the field of motor sport, I will nonetheless go as far as to venture suggesting that I feel [almost] sure that all what we saw unfold this past week was fully scripted, at least in between Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton, where both agreed and promised one another that if James Allison proved able to bring back Mercedes-AMG into a title-contender position, the first title was to crown Sir Lewis Hamilton so as to erase that FIA-failure to properly see enforced the regulatory requirements Michael Mas failed at in Abu-Dhabi 2021, which Jean-Todt, and the new chairman colluded 'into', so as to prevent for Lewis Hamilton to supersede that same number of titles which were bestowed upon Michael Schumacker, It became obvious as from Zandvoort 2023 that George Russel did not have abide by the same opinion and the same 'principles'. This, at least to me, was not only further confirmed by some race messages exchanged between the pit-wall and drivers late in the championship, but was further evidenced by a dinner encounter in Monaco between Toto Wolff and George Russel, sometimes between Christmas and New Year, which was incidentally evidenced by the camera of one of the too many car spotters that plague 'Monegasque' privacy for far too long. Finally, I feel that Andrea Kimi Antonelli, providing he confirms the trust bestowed upon him, by winning the 2024 F2 Title, should receive Lewis Hamilton seat. This would prove that Toto Wolf as one can prove superiorly shrewd to both Helmut Marko and Christian Horner when they manipulated the FIA to accept the underaged Max Verstappen onto the F1 scene.
