I would argue that the last few occasions something as nuts as this was announced was when Williams didn't keep Nigel Mansell or Damon Hill, or when Senna switched to Williams, or even when Hamilton left McLaren for Mercedes.

This feels very similar to his move to merc. Was in a championship winning team, team falls off in new regs, midway through the regs he switchs to another team
You can actually still find Tweets of 2012 where you see people going off on Hamilton, especially McLaren fans, saying: you did this for money, you joined a mid-table team, you just ended your career etc. It was seen as a destructive move and that's what people don't often mention. I think Hamilton was going to be the lead driver on the team. He gave the green light to this once he knew the Andretti project wasn't going to happen before 2028. Plus, Andretti still ultimately need to actually have some sort of dominant win in this era in any of their ventures. While I think F1 is in the wrong by keeping closed (WEC's gain and maybe IndyCar's gain and Formula E's gain), Andretti and GM knew this and they ultimately needed to be so good on the outside (and so known) that F1 would feel a loss not having them.

Hamilton has almost a win/win scenario: if the W15 is good this year, he can make a run at the championship and then ride off into the sunset in the Ferrari. If the W15 isn't so good, he can escape it for (at least) a year, knowing that the Ferrari has at least challenged for P2 consistently and was good enough for a bunch of poles in 2023.
What if the mercedes develops well towards the end of the year into the best car but too late to win the championship and ferrari is nowhere... there are also scenarios possible that are not win win

Lewis literally contacted Ferrari on Jan 31 and signed that same day (seems like he very suddenly made up his mind to leave Merc immediately after just a couple of days in the sim; apparently he hated the new Merc car again and ran out of patience, it was the last straw). Then rumors started that same day but got really serious on Feb 1 and broke the F1 world. The information was quickly leaked in fact, which is why every single reputable source and outlet was discussing it and treating it like a confirmed announcement, despite Lewis, Merc and Ferrari having not said anything at that point. They didn't intend to officially announce it this soon. Merc probably didn't even know any of this was happening until the rumors started. I really wonder who leaked the info so quickly; Will Buxton was the first to hint at some big news coming in the next days but he didn't specificy anything.
