For those wondering why is this album named "Cruel Summer" rather than "Flowers" or why certain tracks are not present here : This album "Cruel Summer" is the U.S. version of the European "Flowers" album. Some of the tracks ("Donnie", "He Decides", "Travel to Romantis" and the "Cruel Summer" remix) have quite different versions between the two albums. "Whenever you're near me" is essentially "Life is a Flower" in a slightly different style and with different lyrics. "Everytime it Rains" is exclusive to this album and was not included in "Flowers" ; on the other hand, "Flowers" included 3 exclusive tracks : "Dr. sun" (Typical AoB-sound), "I pray" (rather typical AoB as well, but with a touch of gospel), and "Captain Nemo" (a ballad, pretty good one). I personally prefer the European version "Flowers", however I do enjoy some of the different versions here. I particularly enjoyed "He Decides" on here, more than its European counterpart. While the "Flowers" version has the typical AoB style, here it is quite dark-sounding, and I love it.
I Pray is my favorite on the album with Dr Sun in my top 5 so i prefer the European album. No idea why they would not include strong songs like those. I like the remixed versions of Donnie and Travel To Romantis better than on the Euro version.

Jenny recorded it first, but Arista Records founder Clive Davis insisted her be scrapped and Linn sing the whole thing herself, leaving Jenny side-lined and in tears. Worse, Linn didn't want to do it, disliked the words she was singing and you can HEAR it in the song that she dislikes it, which actually doesn't destroy it, a neat thing too, seeing as the 1998 material they had out was kind of sub-par for them. Jonas himself says of the song: "I don't like the song one bit-the tipping point for Linn and the final nail for her leaving the music biz. It killed us all, really." He spoke of this between 2015-2019 to Renowned For Sound about it. Pure blood, not love I'd say. It also doesn't help when a effing critic blithely terms it: "the best thing Celine Dion never recorded". Oh deeaarr! And if you aske me that's the problem there in a nutshell. By 1998 AOB sounding too generic and producing stuff that everybody does. Not good-at all!

Intriguing as Linn was not happy singing that song and didn't want to do it and it shows, as was the final straw for her premature department, though she clung vaguely on for a tiny smattering of songs on their last album in 2002. Shocking how many people it took to write a rather generic song, thank God Diane Warren wasn't involved, but if it was from the "Flowers" album, which it wasn't, it'd be one of the best things on their weakest album by some distance. We don't care about a world tour (Linn, like the ABBA girls before her does NOT LIKE tours. You lot always want the WRONG thing. It's a new album we want-with Linn's vocals on it, though it never be like it was before 1996 but there you go.

No way, their worst one by far. The hideous 'Donnie', the dumb nonsense of 'Tokyo Girl' & its equal 'Cecilia' and the spaced out clumsiness of 'Captain Nemo'. While a good album for the incredibly shit year of 1998 (it just went down in flames from 1994 onwards), for AOB, it is technically their equivalent of Kim Wilde's "Now & Forever" and Duran Duran's "Seven & Ragged Tiger" and OMD's "The Pacific Age" & "Universal" in relative terms. Good when compared to the crap making albums since 1990, but middling via a good group's usual standard. Thank GOD "Da Capo" followed is all I can say!
@@kyachdistent1301 What?!??!?! Flowers is very good album. Travel to romantis (Original euroversion) on itself proves Aces were still on top of the game in -98. Captain Nemo was mesmerizing. I love both version of "He decides" and the album as a whole is solid. Their best work to date has to be "The bridge". It really proved band was something else than these "flash in the pan" acts that came and went in the 90s.

Sure it's good by 1998 standards (a slug's fart in a turd would be good compared to what the late 90s became musically), but from Ace Of Base, it was their weakest yet. Considering how masterpiece "The Bridge" was reported to have been rushed (I don't see how in any way other than in a typical record label way in the demand to follow-up the breakthrough album with another equal), but it doesn't sound it one bit as it's full of carefully thought out songs with a more organic sound, less club/techno and all get their songs in, and little record label interference. Put that next to "Flowers"-an album demanded by the US management to be full of "happy, sunny songs". In other words it has to be done in the way the limited understanding of the US can understand. With lyrics like: "life is a flower, smile and the world smiles with you" & "woah give me what I feel tonight, adventures in paradise" against the adult spec on "The Bridge"-ugh! Even the earliest writing on the debut sounds sophisticated in these terms. Added to this, it's the first album with a truly hideous song ('Donnie') and utterly meaningless fluff ('Tokyo Girl) to damn stupid ('Cecilia) & dated Motown sap ('Always Have, Always Will)'. Of course I have the better UK version of "Flowers" which doesn't fuck about with the songs in an awful "for the US" remix, plus the sequencing is far better. Above all, 'Dr Sun' (one of the albums few best songs) isn't above and neither is 'I Pray'. Granted 'Travel To Romantis' is the best song on there and I really dig 'Dr Sun' & 'Don't Go Away', but this album is weak (though still ownable) compared with their usual standard. Am glad we both agree on "The Bridge" being their best work even if the stupid UK charts in 1995 didn't think so (but that was 1995 for you, as bad as 1998), but "Da Capo" brought things back wonderfully. Not as great as "The Bridge', but better even than their debut, and certainly better than "Flowers", which I'm sure sounds even worse with the screwed-up tracks for US radio, though another version of Donnie' may help the ghastly one I know, out, though not holding out bets. 'Captain Nemo' as subject is best in Sarah Brightman's hands (off her 1993 debut "The Dive") and an entirely different song. I just don't like the way it's worded. I like the subdued nature, it's just sappily written and should be more mysterious than it is, but at least it's not 'Tokyo Girl' meaningless and 'Cecilia' silly and flat-out 'Donnie' awful.

AoB, só fico triste com vcs porque não fizeram um dvd de um show antes de chegarem ao fim. Isso é muito injusto conosco. A única coisa que tenho é um.dvd com todos os clipes, mas não sinto que é suficiente. Ah , não posso esquecer que consegui baixar um documentário sobre a banda, acho que se chama Our Story. Infelizmente não tem legenda em português e nem tudo consegui ter compreensão. Ficaram devendo um dvd de turnê. De qualquer forma, ainda amo a banda quase que da mesma maneira que amava nos 90. Vcs foram a primeira banda estrangeira da qual tive acesso. Acho que eu tinha uns 12 anos, no máximo.

I own both versions of the album, i liked flowers version better. "Whenever your near me" sounded off, like it was pushed. "Life is a flower" was the better version. I don't know why you changed it.

Love this album, the best of their career. The sound and the lyrics are unique. Very good old times back in 1998. Salutes Ace of Base!
No way, their worst one by far. The hideous 'Donnie', the dumb nonsense of 'Tokyo Girl' & its equal 'Cecilia' and the spaced out clumsiness of 'Captain Nemo'. While a good album for the incredibly shit year of 1998 (it just went down in flames from 1994 onwards), for AOB, it is technically their equivalent of Kim Wilde's "Now & Forever" and Duran Duran's "Seven & Ragged Tiger" and OMD's "The Pacific Age" & "Universal" in relative terms. Good when compared to the crap making albums since 1990, but middling via a good group's usual standard. Thank GOD "Da Capo" followed is all I can say!
@@kyachdistent1301 What?!??!?! Flowers is very good album. Travel to romantis (Original euroversion) on itself proves Aces were still on top of the game in -98. Captain Nemo was mesmerizing. I love both version of "He decides" and the album as a whole is solid. Their best work to date has to be "The bridge". It really proved band was something else than these "flash in the pan" acts that came and went in the 90s.

Sure it's good by 1998 standards (a slug's fart in a turd would be good compared to what the late 90s became musically), but from Ace Of Base, it was their weakest yet. Considering how masterpiece "The Bridge" was reported to have been rushed (I don't see how in any way other than in a typical record label way in the demand to follow-up the breakthrough album with another equal), but it doesn't sound it one bit as it's full of carefully thought out songs with a more organic sound, less club/techno and all get their songs in, and little record label interference. Put that next to "Flowers"-an album demanded by the US management to be full of "happy, sunny songs". In other words it has to be done in the way the limited understanding of the US can understand. With lyrics like: "life is a flower, smile and the world smiles with you" & "woah give me what I feel tonight, adventures in paradise" against the adult spec on "The Bridge"-ugh! Even the earliest writing on the debut sounds sophisticated in these terms. Added to this, it's the first album with a truly hideous song ('Donnie') and utterly meaningless fluff ('Tokyo Girl) to damn stupid ('Cecilia) & dated Motown sap ('Always Have, Always Will)'.
Of course I have the better UK version of "Flowers" which doesn't fuck about with the songs in an awful "for the US" remix, plus the sequencing is far better. Above all, 'Dr Sun' (one of the albums few best songs) isn't above and neither is 'I Pray'. Granted 'Travel To Romantis' is the best song on there and I really dig 'Dr Sun' & 'Don't Go Away', but this album is weak (though still ownable) compared with their usual standard. Am glad we both agree on "The Bridge" being their best work even if the stupid UK charts in 1995 didn't think so (but that was 1995 for you, as bad as 1998), but "Da Capo" brought things back wonderfully. Not as great as "The Bridge', but better even than their debut, and certainly better than "Flowers", which I'm sure sounds even worse with the screwed-up tracks for US radio, though another version of Donnie' may help the ghastly one I know, out, though not holding out bets. 'Captain Nemo' as subject is best in Sarah Brightman's hands (off her 1993 debut "The Dive") and an entirely different song. I just don't like the way it's worded. I like the subdued nature, it's just sappily written and should be more mysterious than it is, but at least it's not 'Tokyo Girl' meaningless and 'Cecilia' silly and flat-out 'Donnie' awful.

Entiendo que the bridge es su mejor disco y que hasta lo tengo en cd pero esta versión de el disco, flowers es muy experimental
En las canciones, cruel summer, adventures in paradise, don't go away y cecilia se escuchan como las canciones de pop adolescente de esos años
Mientras que tokio girl y travel to romantis tienen un estilo dance, Donnie y he decides suenan mucho mejor que en la versión de europa
Y agradezco que en este disco se aya cambiado el remix final de cruel summer, por que no me gusta mucho el remix que viene en el disco flowers

AoB, só fico triste com vcs porque não fizeram um dvd de um show antes de chegarem ao fim. Isso é muito injusto conosco. A única coisa que tenho é um.dvd com todos os clipes, mas não sinto que é suficiente. Ah , não posso esquecer que consegui baixar um documentário sobre a banda, acho que se chama Our Story. Infelizmente não tem legenda em português e nem tudo consegui ter compreensão. Ficaram devendo um dvd de turnê. De qualquer forma, ainda amo a banda quase que da mesma maneira que amava nos 90. Vcs foram a primeira banda estrangeira da qual tive acesso. Acho que eu tinha uns 12 anos, no máximo.

I own both versions of the album, i liked flowers version better. "Whenever your near me" sounded off, like it was pushed. "Life is a flower" was the better version. I don't know why you changed it.
